FAVA 5.1 Produces artworks and graphic designs that use selected subject matter, including symbols and ideas, to communicate a message. FAVA 5.3 Creates artworks in the areas of drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, pottery, fiber arts, mixed media, and digital images.FAVA 5.5 Demonstrates proper care and safe use of art materials and tools.FAVA 5.13 Recognizes how artists use selected subject matter, including symbols and ideas, to communicate a message. FAVA 5.15 Develops, judges, and communicates personal decisions about artwork. FAVA 5.16 Supports a personal position on the "big" questions about art (e.g., Why do people create art? Why certain objects are considered art and others are not considered art? How do we justify judgments about what is art? Must art be beautiful? Does art have to be functional? If it is in an art museum, does that make it art?).

Ongoing Art Objectives: Develop construction (cutting, gluing, manipulating, etc.),

drawing, painting, etc., skills (Application, Synthesis; ongoing objective, see art matrix).

Demonstrates proper care and safe use of art materials and tools (Application Evaluation; ongoing objective; 5.5).

Appraise/Evaluate artwork for quality (thoughtfulness & carefulness) and accuracy (following directions & project guidelines) (ongoing).

Project Specific Objectives:1. Create a kufi, an African hat.2. Create a paper weave.3. Define weaving as lacing together or

interlocking fibers.4. Manipulate paper strips to create a paper

weave.5. Arrange the paper weave in an alternating

fashion.6. Appraise/Evaluate the paper weave,

determining if the strips are properly alternated.

7. Create a design on the top of the hat that communicates a message and uses the continent of Africa as one of the design symbols. (Incorporate the continent of Africa into the hat design).

The students are asked to observe, compare and contrast two paper weaves; one that is alternated correctly and another that is not woven correctly. They will make comments about they observe.

Weaving WordsLoom: A frame or a machine used to create cloth.Shuttle: An instrument used to put thread or yarn between the warp (vertical) direction.Warp: The up and down direction (vertical-longitude).Weft: The across direction (horizontal). Weaving back and fourth across the warp (vertical) fibers.

The teacher will give step by step instructions (guided practice) for the students to follow as they create their paper weave. The students will follow the step by step instructions (guided practice) and then create their own paper weaves (independent practice). This independent practice will help them understand the weaving (alternating) process.

Questions regarding the two trees

1. What do you notice about the two weaves?

2. Are the paper weaves the same or different?

3. How are they different?4. How could you create these

paper weaves?5. What group of people do not

have any form of weaving in their culture?

Low:Peer tutoring and direct teacher help. A precut loom can be used or a loom with the lines already drawn for the student to follow as they cut. Tape can be used to keep the loom in its proper place. Average: Partnering with another student who can keep a watchful eye on the student to observe correct alternation. Teacher observation can be used as well. High: The student will create complex paper weaves. Making looms with curved or non-straight lines and use thinner strips.

1. The culminating activity: The African hat: The kufi.

2. The paper weaves woven correctly.

3. Observation.

After the first session:We have practiced weaving today, next time we will start to create the kufi. After the second session:Now we have started the side or bottom of the hat, the next period we will design and cutout the top of the hat.
