    About This Chapter

When configuring RPR services on a per-NE basis, you can specify the timeslot and route forservices on an individual NE basis. But, this method is of low efficiency. If the T2000 has thelicense for the end-to-end configuration function, it is recommended to use the end-to-endconfiguration function to configure services.

  • 16.1 RPR Ring NetworkResilient packet ring (RPR) is a MAC layer technology designed for a two-fiber ring topology.RPR is used to transmit data services in an effective and reliable manner.Currently, the three protection modes for an RPR ring network are as follows:l Wrappingl Steeringl Wrapping and steering

WrappingWhen a fault occurs on the ring, wrapping is automatically performed on the node near the failurepoint. That is, Ring 0 and Ring 1 are connected. Wrapping has a short response time, whichlessens frame loss when a fault occurs, but occupies more bandwidth.Figure 16-1 and Figure 16-2 illustrate the situations before a fiber cut and after wrapping isperformed. The thick line indicates the normal route, and the thin line indicates the protectionroute.

Figure 16-1 Traffic flow before a fibre cut

Figure 16-2 Traffic flow after a fibre cut

SteeringWhen a fault occurs somewhere on the ring, the protection information including the failurepoint and fault type is sent to each node, and the topology also changes correspondingly. The

  • source node only needs to send data to the destination node according to the new topology. Thesmall part of data that has been sent is discarded at the failure point. Steering effectively improvesutilization of ring bandwidth and allows signals to be transmitted on the best route. However, ittakes a longer time to trigger the switching process, and a new route needs to be decidedaccording to the new topology after the topology becomes stable.Figure 16-3 and Figure 16-4 illustrate the situations before a fiber cut and after steering isperformed. The thick line indicates the normal route, and the thin line indicates the protectionroute.

Figure 16-4 Traffic flow after a fibre cut

Wrapping and SteeringWrapping triggers the switching process in a short time. Hence, loss of frame can be effectivelyprevented after a fault occurs. But, more ring bandwidth is required for this protection mode.Steering effectively improves the utilization of ring bandwidth and allows signals to betransmitted on the best route. However, it takes a longer time to trigger the switching process, and a new route needs to be decided according to the new topology after the topology becomesstable. In this process, wrapping is first performed to avoid loss of packets, and steering is thenperformed after the topology becomes stable. In this way, the time during which services areinterrupted is less than or equal to 50ms.
