  • Here are some questions I’m commonly asked:

    1) What’s Idris Elba really like? I always answer by telling a story about the day he met my kids, who at the time were 7 and 9 years old. This story sends people away even more in love with Idris Elba than when they asked the question. 2) Am I sick in the head? 3) Will there ever be a Luther soundtrack album?

The answer to which you are now, presumably, holding in your hands.

In my head, Luther always had a very particular sound, both very fastidious and - to my colleagues - vexatiously unspecific. But Paul Englishby’s original score defined the show as completely as Roy Budd’s defined the original Get Carter. All those moments of terror and anxiety belong as much to Paul as they do to writer and director. And I love that his titles read like a Haiku, like a fractured psychic map to the bloody topography of Lutherland: Carnage... Unlucky Young Couple... He’s Behind You...

    ... Alice

And then there were the closing songs. They were never chosen to be hip, or to make us look cool - any whiff of that was quickly booted out. They were chosen because they were the right songs: Nina Simone’s peerless Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood, Gil Scott Heron’s incomparable cover of Me and the Devil, Joan As Policewoman’s spectral Flash. And of course, Massive Attack’s serpentine Paradise Circus, which we knew was our theme the second we heard its romantic, seditious opening line.

There weren’t enough episodes, and some of my ideas didn’t fit - I’d have loved to have the Chameleons on the soundtrack for instance, and Sun House, and of course David Bowie. Luther without David Bowie is like - well - Luther without Alice.

But here they are: here are the songs we love from a show we loved. We hope you love them, too.

    NEIL CROSS

  • LUTHER is a real gift for a composer to score; with the darkest, most terrifying of villains; complex, charismatic hero; its twisting, operatic plot lines; brilliantly drawn supporting characters and dark, unsettled romance. I have had the great good fortune to have scored all three series, and work with a wonderfully creative production team.

From the outset, I was encouraged to treat the score as an integral expressive force, heightening the horror, exploring the psychologically complex twists in the fate of

John Luther and plumbing the depths of grief and sadness in the wake of heinous crimes.

The instrumentation consists of orchestral textures, electric guitars, large percussion ensemble, electric viola, warped electronics, voices and a variety of solo instrumentalists, allowing me to paint vivid sonic colours; epic, intimate, chaotic or very simple. The score cues represented here are a selection from across the series, from the very first moment we meet Luther, through to the edge-of-your seat terror in series three.

I’d like to thank Neil Cross, the brilliant creator of Luther; Idris Elba; the BBC; executive producer Phillippa Giles; producers Katie Swinden and Claire Bennett; directors Brian Kirk, Stefan Schwartz, Farren Blackburn; and especially Sam Miller, who encouraged a dynamic and daring approach to the role of music in Luther.
