close at hand with this
simple organizer.
1. Select a curtain rod (#236505)
that includes equipment for hanging.
2. Spray-paint the rod and the
hanging equipment, if desired, in
the color of your choice (we used
black). Allow to dry.
3. Secure the rod to the wall at
each end and in the center. Use
112-inch S-hooks (#196554) to hang
lightweight utensils from the rod.
4 CREATIVE IDEAS
perfectlypinnedUse clothespins attached to thin
strips of board for displaying
invitations and cards.
1. Lightly sand all sides of a (2-foot-long)14- x 4-inch board. Apply two coats of paint to the
board with the color of your choice; allow to dry.
(We paired two boards together, each painted a
different color, for a staggered, striped effect.)
2. Using a hot-glue gun, attach plastic clothespins
(#232057) to the painted board as shown.
3. Attach two picture hangers (#62958) to the back
of the board, and hang on your wall.
reflectivestylePaint colorful patterns
on a mirror.
1. Wipe clean a (28-inch-diameter) beveled-edge
mirror (#33621). Apply flexible painters tape to
create a striped pattern and to cover the areas
that will remain unpainted.
2. Select paint colors of your choice in
a satin finish. Dip a foam brush in the
paint, and then lightly dab the brush
into sand. Paint the stripes; let dry.
Remove the painters tape.
3. To create the dots, dip the end of
a foam roller into the paint and then
into the sand, and dab onto the mirror,
rotating it gently for even coverage. Let dry.
4. Hang the mirror using the included hardware.

wall artCreate shapes from copper tubingto add interest in any room.
1. Gently bend and stretch a length of lightweight
copper tubing (#43498) into a shape that suits your
wallspace. Avoid creating sharp corners, which will
cause the tubing to weaken and break.
2. Hold the tubing against the wall, and determine
the locations for securing. Screw 114-inch cup hooks
into the wall at these places, and then slide the
tubing into each hook.
chicstoragePut photos in plain view with
these pretty boxes.
1. Collect an assortment of shoe boxes in various
sizes. Using wallpaper of your choice and masking
tape, wrap each box and lid separately like you would
wrap a gift.
2. Choose decorative knobs that complement your
selected wallpaper patterns. A variety of knobs can
be found in the hardware department at Lowes.
3. Remove the included bolt from each knob. On
an end panel of the shoe box, center the knob low
enough to allow space for the lid. Using scissors,
puncture a hole, and push the knob through it.
4. To secure, reattach the bolt to the knob from
the inside of the box. If needed, further secure the
knobs using a hot-glue gun.

12 CREATIVE IDEAS
freshheadboardAdorned with a cheerful wallpaper pattern and two paint colors, simple doorscan become a focal point in a bedroom. Here, a floral wallpaper border is attached
on the door panels to complement the striped paper on the walls. You can match
your decor and add your own twist by selecting another color palette with different
coordinating wallpaper patterns. Joining the doors with hinges allows you to fold the
headboard for easy transportation or to use it as a folding screen.
General: The overall dimensions of this
headboard are approximately 112 inches
deep, 60 inches wide, and 80 inches high,
making it most suitable for a full- (as shown)
or queen-size mattress.
Step 1: Place the two doors on a flat
urface (or on sawhorses) with the two
ong edges facing and the smallest panels
on the top.
Step 2: On the front of the doors, apply
painters tape around the borders of the
pper eight panels. Using an angledpaintbrush, apply two coats of light-pink
paint inside the borders. Allow to dry, and
hen remove the tape.
Step 3: Tape around the panels again, but
place the tape inside the borders this time.
Using an angled paintbrush, apply two coats
of dark-pink paint. Allow to dry, and then
emove the tape.
Step 4: Carefully measure the dimensions of
he raised portions of each light-pink panel.

Interior doorsoffer a creativecanvas forexpressingyour style.
Mark and measure these dimensions on
the back of the wallpaper, and cut out the
eight pieces using a utility knife. Attach
the wallpaper to the raised panels per the
manufacturers instructions. Allow to dry.
Step 5: Turn the doors over. Join the
doors by attaching two continuous hinges
using the included hardware, along the
seam of the doors long edges.
Step 6: To attach the door to the wall,
place a large self-leveling picture hanger on
each corner of the headboard. (The doorwill be resting on the wall, but not hanging
from it.) Lean the headboard against the
wall at the appropriate angle, and then
mark the placement of the picture hangers
on the wall; install the appropriate wall
fasteners. (Visit Lowes.com/Fasteners

best for your wall.) Secure the picture
hangers to the wall fasteners to stabilize

This closet was beginning to feel more
like a storage locker than a shared dress-
ing spacewith scarves, belts, neckties,
and handbags spilling from the shelves.
The couple needed a system that would
put accessories and apparel in plain sight
and easy reach, plus a subtle division be-
tween her side and his side. Raised-panel
maple cabinetry, watery-blue walls, and
sand-colored carpet lend the relaxing feel
of a coastal cottage.
ALL ABOUTACCESSORIES
1 Three rounded shelving units, stacked
vertically in a corner, turn an otherwise
unused niche into a functional place to
store handbags,hats, and accessories.
2 The extra space between the upper
cabinetry and the ceiling is used to
stack spare pillows and blankets.
3 Clothing rods mounted at 79-inch
heights leave ample room for dresses,
coats,and long skirts.
4 A shoe cubby is placed above the
cabinetry unit containing shelving
and drawer space for folded clothes.Additional cabinetry cubbies, located
in the center of the closet, also organize
shoes and create a divider between her
side and his side.

what they didTHE CHALLENGE: The kitchen needed
o accommodate the homeowners
busy lifestyles, which include regular
entertaining. The couple also wanted
he kitchen to celebrate the natural
andscape just beyond the windows.
THE SOLUTION: Simplifying the floor
plan allows for efficient traffic flow and
creates a variety of areas for guests,
ncluding island space and a hospitality
center with a sink and beverage chiller.
This space overlooks a pretty stretchof hillside peppered with boulders,lend-
ng a secluded feel in the natural setting.
The couple wanted to create an upbeat,
casual, yet sophisticated, kitchen design
hat harmonizes with the views.
The homeowners changed the floor
plan in order to bring more openness into
he kitchen and mimic the great outdoors.
Because they entertain quite frequently,
hey wanted the area to flow easily for
mall and large groups.A generous-sized
sland provides the perfect place for guests
o perch while the homeowners cook. It
also enhances the kitchens airy feel and
helps to define the space.
Sleek appliances are paired with nature-
nspired materials, while bold dabs of red
elevate the color palette. The result is
a kitchen that packs a double puncha
visual wowand a streamlined workflow.

magical makeover: bath
When a bath is designed for individual needs and different life stages, whether
current, anticipated,or even unforeseen, it truly becomes a place for peace of mind and
elaxation. Imagine an expectant mother whose center of gravity is awrygrab bars
help steady her while getting in and out of the tub. For a man with an old football
knee injury,a zero-threshold shower makes daily tasks less painful. And open sink bases
eave room for those who require seating,in a wheelchair or otherwise. All of these
olutions and many others are applied through the pr inciples of universal design.
Universal design is about products that are more comfortable to use and environments
hat make life easier for as many individuals as possible, regardless of age or ability. Not
ong ago,the perception of universal design was that style succumbed to accessibili ty.
Today, there are more and more universally designed products available in the latest
colors and finishes,so homeowners get the best of all worlds.
This bath reflects todays styles and trendsfrom the dual-use layout to the sleek
products to the accessible features.Welcome to the universal design bath from Lowes and
Ohio State University. We hope you enjoy this private tour especially for the readers
of Lowes Creative Ideas for Home and Garden.

universal designLowes and Ohio State University have teamed up to tell
the story of universal design. In 2006, they partnered to build
a universally designed kitchen exhibit at the universitys Farm
Science Review. The exhibit was toured by thousands of
people, including the general public as well as interior designstudents from several colleges, and Lowes received thousands
of letters from the readers of Lowes Creative Ideas for Home
and Garden, eager to learn more about universal design.
Because of that success and a commitment to this principle,
the two decided to build a universally designed bath at the
Farm Science Review for 2007.
Were very excited about this opportunity to get the word
out about universal design, says Melissa Birdsong, Lowes
Vice President of Trend, Design & Brand. We hope even
more people will learn how easy it can be to make a home
accessible for alland make it look fabulous as well.

WHITE You can showcase plenty of style
and personality in neutral-colored rooms.
White walls can be the perfect backdrop
for incorporating self-expression through
decorative accents. They also can allow you
to quickly change the look of your room
by switching out accessories, such as cur-tains or pillows. When used in hallways or
stairwells, white walls can connect rooms
that have varied palettes.
TINTS All whites are not the same
you can choose from warm whites with
yellow and pink undertones to cool whites
incorporating green or blue.Use these tints
as you would warm and cool colors in
your home.Try Du Jour or Bistro White

workingwith colorUse the color wheel you learned in
art class to create a scheme for your
home. The basic color wheel showscolors at their purest, but most people
prefer using lighter or darker values
(created by adding white or black)
of these basic colors. Consider the
following four types of color schemes
derived from the wheel, and use
values that appeal most to you.
monochromatic schemes involve a
single color used in one or more values
or intensities. (Intensity refers to the
brightness of the color.) For example,
you could create a scheme using two
or more shades of green.
analogous schemes use hues that lie
next to each other on the color wheel
such as blue and blue-greenand
are held together by the common color
(in this example, blue).
complementary schemes are

BROWN AND BLACK For rich color
that also can serve as a neutral backdrop
for your homes decor, consider a shade of
brown or black.Browns such as Journey
or Turkish Coffee allow bright colors
think whites and chartreuseto stand
out. Dark Kettle Black and Very Black
coat walls in brilliant depth. For a more
subdued shade of black that incorporates
gray, try Blindfold.
YELLOW Draw inspiration from nature
by creating a bright, sunny room that willperk you up even on the dreariest of days.
Fresh yellows, such as Tulip from the
Laura Ashley Home collection, revitalize
a room and make it a cheery escape.
Richer tones, such as Buttered Toffee, also
bring warm energy to a room but allow
for deeper color.
YOU CRAVE:
A home that exudes depthand vitality.THE SOLUTION: Bold, Warm Colors3
RED If you want to ignite excitement in
a roomperhaps your kitchen or dining
roomfire up the walls with Radiant Red
or Bright Red.These intrepid colors give
off energy that can inspire you to cook
a five-course meal and encourage your
guests to let lively conversation flow while
they dine. If you like the idea of red in
your homes palette, but youre not ready
for an absolute crimson, try a cooler shade
that contains more blue and purple, such
as Montpelier Red Velvet.
ORANGE Known to stimulate appetite
as well as energy, fresh shades of orange,
such as Ripe Pomegranate and Roasted
Pumpkin, enliven your walls with br illiant
color that excites the senses. For a paler
yet invigorating shade, try Orange Ochre
or Homestead Apricot.

perfectfixtureTry giving a basic ceiling light a
colorful upgrade with paint, and
then turn it into a container for
shapely plants. The prismatic
glass of the fixture contributes
a nice texture to the scene, while
the purplish-red paint color
complements the bromeliads
warm organic hues.
Step 1: Use painters tape to
cover the glass areas of the ceiling
fixture drum (#78219).
Step 2: Spray-paint the white
plastic areas; we used claret wine
(#40180). Allow to dry, and then
remove the tape.
Step 3: Add a 12-inch layer of pearl
stone soil cover (#139514), and
add a 2-inch layer of potting soil.
Step 4: Plant a succulent or
bromeliad in the potting soil. Add a
shallow layer of the stone soil cover
around the plant. Water lightly.

birds-eyeviewHang this feeder-turned-planter in front
of a window, or outdoors on a covered
porch, and watch your plant grow. You also
can place this planter on a table near a
natural light source. Note: This project is
fairly airtight (except for some airflow fromthe bottom), so you will see condensation
inside the glass.
Step 1: Unscrew the top of the metal bird
feeder (#178345). Using a spoon or small
scoop, add a 2-inch layer of white marble
soil cover (#139497), and add a 1-inch layer
of potting soil.
Step 2: Plant a thin, upright succulent, such
as the elephant bush shown here, in the
potting soil. Add a thin layer of the marble
soil cover around the plant. Water lightly.
Replace the top of the feeder.

repair, safety upgrades,and basic remod-

The project that Jack found
the most touching was the
renovation of an Olympic-size swimming pool, which
would have been shut down
if the Lowes Heroes program
had not intervened.Restor-
ing this pool will impact a large
number of kids for many years, Jack says.
There are 40 or 50 examples just like that
poolwhere the overall impact just cant
be measured.
Most of the work took place during the
summer of 2006.We had more than 300
employees give their timeover 7,000
hours of skilled laborfor this project,
Jack says. The Boys and Girls Clubs of
Greater Dallas were also awarded a $25,000
grant from Lowes Charitable and Edu-
cational Foundation to purchase project
supplies for the facility renovations.
Project completion coincided with the

a grand reopening event on August 15 atthe Oak Cliff location in southern Dallas.
Jack describes the celebration as having a
festival atmosphere for the children, [in-
