make bloodyour business

With thousands of patients receiving blood transfusions every year, NHS Blood andTransplant is challenging businesses in the Nottingham area, to make a date to save lives.Organisations are being invited to book an event in their workplace where employees cansign up, find out their blood type and make a date to donate.

Donated blood is vital for a wide variety of life-saving procedures in Nottingham hospitals. Patientsundergoing major surgery and emergency treatment often require blood transfusions, but perhapsless well-known is the fact that blood is essential to the treatment for many different types of cancerand blood disorders.

Jo Walker, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Marketing & Business Development Manager for the North, said:“Every time someone donates a unit of blood, their donation saves or improves the lives of up to threepeople. Blood donations are precious.“Regular blood donors in Nottingham have already helped to save thousands of lives and we cannot

thank them enough. Unfortunately, a number of these donors may no longer be able to donate in the futuredue to health or other reasons so we need local businesses to come forward, invite us into their workplace for arecruitment event and help us to ensurepatients in Nottingham always getthe blood they need.”

Organisations with over 300employees will qualify for arecruitment event; those withsmaller workforces can stillsupport NHSBT through otherchannels and are also invited toget in touch.

In general, as long as you are fitand healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are agedbetween 17 and 66 (up to 70 if youhave given blood before) youshould be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need tohave given blood in the last twoyears to continue donating. To find out more about donatingblood or to book anappointment, call 0300 123 23 23or visit www.blood.co.uk

‘Grimley Colliery isset to close, as theaccountants say, there’s moremoney in it shutthan open, evenafter redundancypayments. Itmeans 1200 joblosses, a dyingtown and the lossof its brass band. But under theleadership ofDanny, coughingup coal-dustedlungs, the band istransformed intoBritish Championswith local lass

Gloria whipping up the money needed toget them to the Royal Albert Hall.’

Mark Herman’s film Brassed Off celebratesits 20th anniversary this year. It is atouching story of pride, love and loss; notto mention brilliant music. The People’s Theatre Company are

enjoying the wonderful opportunity ofworking alongside Newstead Brass Band, who have already had some of our cast visitthem during their rehearsals at theDiamond Centre in Kirby in Ashby. The casthave been getting use to handling the

brass instruments theircharacters play and alsohave had practice directingthe brass band.

Chris Mercer (Director)grew up around brass bandsand feels at home with thisplay. The play is close toChris’s heart and he has beenwaiting for 4 years to get hisproduction on to theNottingham Art Theatre stage.Quite a few of the cast havefamily members and friendswho worked down the pits in

Nottingham and Yorkshire. They haveshared many interesting and someemotional stories with the rest of theBrassed Off cast and backstage crew. Chris’sMum, Susan Mercer, is a member ofNewstead Brass Band and is also the BandCoordinator for this production.Newstead Brass Band have performed in

other productions of Brassed Off, but arevery excited to be part of this version, particularly because Chris Mercer is theDirector and known by all the bandmembers. Our first musical prop was atrombone lent to us by Mike Pearson(Assistant Director) who used to play quitea few years ago. The other instrument inregular use during rehearsals at themoment is the flugelhorn.  AmyMondschein has not only been cast to actout the role of Gloria who plays theflugelhorn, but Amy is also anaccomplished flugelhorn player in real life.As it happens Amy’s father was part of theoriginal colliery band,  which this play andfilm were based on.It’s all very exciting for the cast of 20,

which includes 3 children.  There are also 19members in the brass band.  The actingcast, Newstead Brass Band and theproduction team are enjoying theproduction, laughing at the jokes andcrying at the emotional truth of the matter.

This is a true reflection of life lived within amining community, giving you an insight tothe devastation brought about by a Torygovernment.

Opening on Saturday and Sunday, 25/26June from 11am to 5pm, visitors will getthe opportunity to explore more gardensthan ever before. There are already over20 beautiful and interesting gardens, of allshapes, sizes and stages of developmentbeing opened by residents.

Alongside the opportunity to see thesewonderful gardens (some being opened thisyear for the first time) visitors to Draycott, atany time, cannot help but see what acommunity spirited place it is. During theOpen Garden Weekend, visitors will be ableto see the Community Projects that havehelped Draycott gain Silver Gilt two yearsrunning in the ‘East Midlands in Bloom’competition. Open space planting, specialfeatures, including the giant plantedwheelbarrow, and being developed this year,a Community Allotment behind the Coachand Horses Public House, have all helpedDraycott to gain the success it has and theresidents are proud to share that success withvisitors. And of course, expect to see againthe usual planted ‘wellies’ that have becomerather a trademark feature for the village withmany houses and community groupsplanting them up and displaying themoutside.

As in previous years, where plantingschemes have focused on aspects of Draycottlife, such as lacemaking, this year they arelooking to introduce bicycles as a theme asthere was once a hugely successful cyclechain and wheel company in the village.

As well as plant and craft sales, refreshmentswill be available from various venuesthroughout the village. Sunday afternoonvisitors will also be able to enjoy a brass bandconcert.

If you’ve been before, you’ll know the treatthat is in store. If you have never visitedDraycott or enjoyed the Open GardensWeekend, then make sure you put the date inyour diary!

The entry fee is £2 per adult and covers thewhole of the weekend, so you can spreadyour tour over the two days. You canpurchase Open Garden ‘Maps’ the weekbefore the event from Dundas the Butcher inBreaston or various businesses in Draycott onthe day. It should now be starting tohot up weather wise and youshould see the results ofprevious planting ofperennials - if not then now isthe time to start!Whilst the very popular ‘bedding plants’always come into focus at this time of year asit is about warm enough for them to growhere in the UK in summer, it is not the onlytype of plant you should have in your garden.Perennials are great for that ability to

‘magically’ pop up each year to give us lots offree colour. They may start off looking ratherdiminutive if you buy a small (and thereforemore affordable) starter plant, but they soonstart to grow bigger each year giving youmasses of colour in some examples. Think of poppies and you will soon get the

idea of what a perennial is. Most forest plantsare perennials, including trees and shrubs. In our country perennial plants grow and

bloom during the warm part of the year, withthe foliage dying back in the winter. Theseplants are referred to as deciduous

perennials. When they regrow it is fromexisting stem tissue - which you will seelooking rather sorry for itself during thewinter months! Some perennials are

evergreen, such as We should compare our own garden

climate so that it suits where a plant is knownto grow well (including any ‘micro climates’which we have looked at in previous issues). If you want some foliage all year round then

look for something evergreen. Examples ofevergreen perennials include Begonia, Azaleaand Rhododendron. For those seeking a culinary reward for their

efforts try these perennial herbs: Basil, Chives,Oregano, Rosemary, Sage and Thyme. It is useful to know that these herbs won’t

grow all year round in the garden but docome back the following spring/summer.For colour - which is what we are usually

seeking at this time of year - there are manyflowering types of perennial plants which willoffer colour each summer without planting aswe have to do with Annuals (the averagebedding plants bought each summer seasonfrom garden centres etc).Perennials like reasonably well drained soil in

general - so use sand if you have slightly‘heavy’ soil. Totally avoid clay type soil. Here are some Perennial types which flower

to check out - make sure that whatever typeyou choose that you plant it in the appropriatepart of your garden. Here are some perennial plants for your

shopping list:

• Foxglove 'Illumination Pink’A tall plant that will reach around 1mtr tall andis a hybrid of the hedgerow foxglove and thenot so hardy but beautiful Canary Islandsversion. A stocky plant that flowers profusely. It is a half-hardy semi-evergreen plant so try toavoid anywhere too exposed to chill winds.• Viola 'Freckles'This is a deciduous perennial that grows toabout 20cm tall and has broadly ovate leavesand 2cm wide white flowers evenly speckledwith violet. It flowers from spring throughsummer. You can buy plants readyto place now or seed in latewinter/early spring so think ahead!• RudbeckiaThis one flowers from early Julyright through to mid November!Keeps your garden looking ‘sunny’through summer and autumn.• PierisA fantastic plant that gives lovelyfoliage all year round (which turnsreddish in autumn) and flowers in summer.

GOING AWAY FOR YOUR HOLS? - THINK WATER!

With June being the month with the longestday to means that we should expect ourplants to get plenty of daylight (and maybesome sunshine!). This means they will also begrowing well and will require the rightamount of water. One of the problems that many gardeners

face is when they go away. They come backfrom a summer break to their lovingly tendedplants looking withered, tired and not thelovely healthy plants they went away from. Here are some tips to help you stay on top of

the all important watering whilst you areaway:

GEL CRYSTALSAnother short term solution is to add waterretaining gel to your baskets and pots - helpsover a few days but not much longer if not

watered regularly.

Now for somethingthat will deliver

more water andwill attach to

your outsidetap:

MAINS TAP DRIP WATER FEEDER:you will need:• Water pressure reducing valve (this isessential and fits on the tap first reducing thewater pressure down to a manageable levelfor the smaller tubes we will attach).• A basic drip water kit (this will usually havethe end drip fittings which are attached to thefine gauge tubes used in these systems andcan be bought for as little as around £4).• Optionally: a battery powered on/off timer (around £10 from some online suppliers)• Small length of hose.• End bung for small length of hose (brewmaking shops sell these - and can be clampedon with a small jubilee clip)The small length of hose is the main ‘feeder’pipe into which the smaller pipes fit (the onesthat go into your plant pots or beds).1) Fit the pressure reducer to the main tap. 2) fit the main hose/feed pipe onto thepressure reducer3) Set the ‘taps’ into the main feed hose (use astandard diy bradawl for this - it works just aswell as the ‘tool’ often sold if you can’t get thetool that is specific for this)

4) Take the first smallermain feed line to yourfirst pot or basket(ideally aim to do thehigher ones first so thepipes then ‘run downhill’slightly to assist flow).5) Use the small ‘t-junctions’ thatcome with these kits to take sub feeder pipesto your other pots.

A FEW POINTERS:• Do buy a proper pressure reducing valve. A common make is Hozelock but there areothers - they are worth paying theapproximately £10 for, rather than relying ona cheap one that comes with some cheapersets. This is probably the most importantthing in this type of set up. • Use small pressure reducing taps on some ofthe smaller feed lines to even out the pressure(sometimes there may be too much watercoming out of the end nozzle on oneparticular pipe). You can easily purchase thesefrom aquarium shops.• If you feel you wish to invest more and getand ’instant kit’ then look at the moreexpensive but excellent ‘all in’ solutions fromthe larger manufacturers such as Hozelockand Gardenia. These are worth it butsometimes by trying the above you candecide if this method is for you - and it is a realboon as it never misses a watering due to‘being too busy’ or one of the other manyreasons we sometimes may kill our plantswith!

Enjoy!

Make your holiday guestsfeel welcome by updatingyour spare rooms orusing space-saving solutionslike sofa beds and otherstylish pieces.

By Gabrielle Fagan

While entertaining family and friends athome during the holiday may be fun - notto mention exhausting - it also puts yourhome under a revealing spotlight.

And as those extra people and theirpossessions put pressure on storage andspace, any shortcomings and limitationscan suddenly become all too clear.

If that invasion makes you uncomfortablyaware how your home is perceived byothers, or you aren’t overwhelmed bycompliments on yourlittle palace, it could be high time to giverooms some TLC.There’s no better moment, with the shops

bursting with sale bargains, to pin-pointthe areas that could do with improvementand turn them round. We’ve got tips on discovering hidden

space at home, plus we’ve found the bestbuys from storage boxes to room dividersthat could transform rooms.

Be warned though - it could mean thoseguests stay longer or clamour to return!

DISCOVER HIDDEN SPACES

Where space is limited, every square inchcounts. The way it’s organised can make ahuge difference to your home. You may be overlooking valuable space, as

Elizabeth Wilhide, author of Small Spaces, points out encouragingly.“When you haven’t got a lot of room to

play with, you have to focus on clever waysto used wasted corners,” she says.“Most people could probably find extra

space in their home.”

Her suggestions:

• Under the stairs: Kitted out properly, thisspace could provide an additional seatingarea, a home office, a utility cupboard or astorage spot.

• Stairs: Stair treads can be converted intodrawers or storage spaces. There are nowcompanies offering readymade stairs fittedwith storage compartments.

• Landings: Generous landings are an idealsite for free-standing or fitted storage, ormaybe just a chair and small table as aretreat from the bustle of the living room.

• Window seats: Build seats into windowbays or alcoves and gain extra seating.

• Room dividers: These can serve asbookcases or display cabinets. Simplescreens are also effective.

SPARE ROOM STYLE

Spare rooms should be comfortable, calmand inviting places where guestscan retreat.

It’s not impossible to achieve thatatmosphere, even if it’s generally adumping ground for clutter most of theyear.

“Pack away a multitude of clutter sins intolarge under-the-bed boxes, and store those throughout the house.

Utilise the backs of doors with over-doorhooks to hold guests’ coatsand bags. It’s worth investing in someclever hanging organisers ormulti-hang hangers to maximise thevertical space in the wardrobe.

AriesNo matter how confident you appearto others, underneath lies a verydifferent story. Do not be afraid ofyour fears as they are there to showyou that there is something worththe courage to fight for. Romanticrelationships are a serious businessfor you. Once you give your heartyou give your partner your loyaltyand devotion.

TaurusGood humour and laughter are thebest medicines to fight anxiety anddepression. Its an excellent businessand social asset so use your charm toget exactly what you want. Certainassociations may have fallen into arut and need to be revitalised. Beefficient, systematic and don’t wastetime on trivial tasks.

GeminiBe selective in all things because youcannot afford any expensivemistakes. If need be, becomeruthless when dealing with peoplewho are time wasters and wantingsomething for nothing. Change isnecessary if you are to make progressregarding a pet project, especially ifyou have felt a trifle stagnant lately.

CancerAfter months ofchopping and changingyour mind regardingone important matter, suddenly everythingwill begin to fall into

place. You are about to make amammoth, life changing decisionand will be glad that you had theconfidence and resourcefulness tofollow your dream. Some excellentfinancial news will put you in abright, chirpy mood. A holiday willdo you the world of good.

LeoWatch out! because a fair weatherfriend may suddenly appear knowingthat others have done all the hardwork. People have very shortmemories and forget how badly theymay have hurt you. Business wise, some opportunities are too good tomiss so look into a proposition mostcarefully because there could besome serious money to be made.

VirgoYou have every reason to getmotivated because trends arestarting to suddenly be working inyour favour. Someone else'smisfortune may well become yourgain. The path of true love rarelyruns smoothly and you may learnvaluable information that suddenlyexplains someone's strangebehaviour.

LibraIf you feel let down by certain friendsits because they have revealed theirtrue colours and not as nice andconsiderate as you were led tobelieve. Romance for singletonslooks promising, especially if youhave recently taken up a new hobbyor sporting interest.

ScorpioKeep your secrets safe and refuse toshare certain information even withsomeone you are close to. You neverquite know who is talking to whom.Your predictions regarding a certainsituation will materialise and youraccuracy regarding this scenario willstunning.

SagittariusIf you have recently lost something ofvalue , it will either turn up again at alater date or you will benefit far moregreatly by a most unexpectedsurprise that is coming your way.Long distance journeys can beexhausting, but so can findingyourself living a humdrum existence.

CapricornRelationship issues of one kind oranother could be causing you a lot ofnecessary bother. Someone isinsisting on acting like a 'dramaqueen' and attracting a lot ofattention to themselves. Be wise andrefuse to lend money, especially ifthe person concerned has a bad, previous track record for repayingtheir debts.

AquariusAs much as you are trying to justifyyour actions and behaviourregarding one particular association,by now, you may be rapidly realisingthat you have acted too hastily andpossibly lost a good friend. Gossipregarding other people surroundsyou and there is a danger that youwill join in by contributing your inputas well.

PiscesYou’ll be tempted to do somethingdramatic very soon and an emotionaloutburst could result in you makinga life changing decision. New friendsthat you thought were excellent maysuddenly fall off their pedestalrevealing their true colours andforcing you to reconsider futuresocial plans.
