    Genesis

A Son Promised to Abraham and Sarah

18 The LORD appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat atthe entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. 2He looked up and sawthree men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tententrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. 3He said, "Mylord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. 4Let a littlewater be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under thetree. 5Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, andafter that you may pass on--since you have come to your servant." Sothey said, "Do as you have said." . 9 They said to him, "Where is your wife Sarah?" And he said, "There,in the tent." 10Then one said, "I will surely return to you in due season, and your wife Sarah shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tententrance behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced inage; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. 12So Sarahlaughed to herself, saying, "After I have grown old, and my husband isold, shall I have pleasure?" 13The LORD said to Abraham, "Why didSarah laugh, and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' 14Isanything too wonderful (too hard) for the LORD? At the set time I willreturn to you, in due season, and Sarah shall have a son." 15But Sarahdenied, saying, "I did not laugh"; for she was afraid. He said, "Oh yes,you did laugh."

Judgment Pronounced on Sodom (Abraham Intercedes for Sodom)

16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; andAbraham went with them to set them on their way. 17The LORD said,"Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18seeing that Abrahamshall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earthshall be blessed in him? d 19 No, for I have chosen him, that he may chargehis children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD bydoing righteousness and justice; so that the LORD may bring about for

Abraham what he has promised him." 20Then the LORD said, "How greatis the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their

sin! 21I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know."

22 So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, whileAbraham remained standing before the LORD. 23Then Abraham camenear and said, "Will you indeed sweep away (destroy) the righteous withthe wicked? 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will youthen sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous whoare in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous withthe wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you!Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" 26And the LORDsaid, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will forgive thewhole place for their sake." 27Abraham answered, "Let me take it uponmyself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose fiveof the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-fivethere." 29Again he spoke to him, "Suppose forty are found there." Heanswered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." 30Then he said, "Oh donot let the Lord be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found there." Heanswered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." 31He said, "Let me take itupon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." Heanswered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." 32Then he said,"Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose tenare found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroyit." 33And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking toAbraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

Abraham's Faith Confirmed. The Command to Sacrifice Isaac

22 After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!"And he said, "Here I am." 2He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a

burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you." 3SoAbraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burntoffering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God hadshown him. 4On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far

    away.5

Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey;the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come

back to you." 6Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it onhis son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7Isaac said to his father Abraham, "Father!"And he said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "The fire and the wood arehere, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" 8Abraham said, "Godhimself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So the two of them walked on together.

9 When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham builtan altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laidhim on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then Abraham reached out hishand and took the knife to kill his son. 11But the angel of the LORDcalled to him from heaven, and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said,"Here I am." 12He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anythingto him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheldyour son, your only son, from me." 13And Abraham looked up and saw aram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram andoffered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14So Abraham calledthat place "The LORD will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On themount of the LORD it shall be provided."

15 The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time fromheaven, 16and said, " By myself I have sworn, says the LORD: Becauseyou have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17Iwill indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous asthe stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And youroffspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, 18and by youroffspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing forthemselves, because you have obeyed my voice. " 19So Abrahamreturned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham lived at Beer-sheba.

While Abraham was sitting, he saw three men coming. These were three

heavenly beings in human bodies. Some think they were all created

angels; others, that one of them was the Son of God. We should not beforgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angelsunawares, #Heb 13:2.

    Genesis 18: 9-15

Sarah laughed. She denied that she had laughed. One sin commonly brings in another. But whom the Lord loves he will rebuke, convict, silence, and bring to repentance.

    Genesis 18: 16-22

The two who are supposed to have been created angels went towardSodom. The one who is called Jehovah throughout the chapter, continuedwith Abraham, and would not hide from him the thing he intended to do.Though God long forbears with sinners, from which they fancy that theLord does not see, and does not regard; yet when the day of his wrathcomes, he will look toward them. The Lord will give Abraham anopportunity to intercede with him, and shows him the reason of his

    conduct.

    Genesis 18: 23-33

Here is the first solemn prayer upon record in the Bible; and it is a prayer for the sparing of Sodom. Abraham prayed earnestly that Sodom might bespared, if but a few righteous persons should be found in it. Come andlearn from Abraham what compassion we should feel for sinners, and how

earnestly we should pray for them. We see here that the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Abraham, indeed, failed in hisrequest for the whole place, but Lot was miraculously delivered. Beencouraged then to expect, by earnest prayer, the blessing of God uponyour families, your friends, your neighborhood. To this end you must notonly pray, but you must live like Abraham. He knew the Judge of all theearth would do right. He does not plead that the wicked may be spared for their own sake, or because it would be severe to destroy them, but for the

sake of the righteous who might be found among them. And righteousnessonly can be made a plea before God. How then did Christ make

intercession for transgressors? Not by blaming the Divine law, nor byalleging aught in extenuation or excuse of human guilt; but by pleadingHIS OWN obedience unto death.

    Genesis 22: 1-2

We never are secure from trials In Hebrew. Every trial is indeed atemptation, and tends to show the dispositions of the heart, whether holyor unholy. But God proved Abraham, not to draw him to sin, as Satantempts. Strong faith is often exercised with strong trials, and put uponhard services. The command to offer up his son, is given in such languageas makes the trial more grievous; every word here is a sword. Observe, 1.The person to be offered: Take thy son; not thy bullocks and thy lambs. How willingly would Abraham have parted with them all to redeem Isaac!Thy son; not thy servant. Thine only son; thine only son by Sarah. TakeIsaac, that son whom thou lovest. 2. The place: three days' journey off; sothat Abraham might have time to consider, and might deliberately obey. 3.The manner: Offer him for a burnt-offering; not only kill his son, hisIsaac, but kill him as a sacrifice; kill him with all that solemn pomp andceremony, with which he used to offer his burnt-offerings.

Abraham knew that he had to do with a God, even Jehovah. Faith hadtaught him not to argue, but to obey. He is sure that what God commandsis good; that what he promises cannot be broken. The good patriarch rises early, and begins his sad journey. And now hetravels three days, and Isaac still is in his sight! Misery is made worsewhen long continued. The expression, We will come again to you, showsthat Abraham expected that Isaac, being raised from the dead, wouldreturn with him. It was a very affecting question that Isaac asked him, as

they were going together: "My father," said Isaac; it was a melting word, which, one would think, should strike deeper in the heart of Abraham, than his knife could in the heart of Isaac. Yet he waits for his son'squestion. Then Abraham, where he meant not, prophesies: "My son, Godwill provide a lamb for a burnt-offering." The Holy Spirit, by his mouth, seems to predict the Lamb of God, which he has provided, and whichtaketh away the sin of the world. Abraham lays the wood in order for hisIsaac's funeral pile, and now tells him the amazing news: Isaac, thou art

the lamb which God has provided! Abraham, no doubt, comforting himwith the same hopes with which he himself by faith was comforted.

    Genesis 22: 11-14

It was not God's intention that Isaac should actually be sacrificed, yetnobler blood than that of animals, in due time, was to be shed for sin, even the blood of the only begotten Son of God. Reference must behad to the promised Messiah, the blessed Seed. Christ was sacrificedin our stead, as this ram instead of Isaac, and his death was ourdischarge. And observe, that the temple, the place of sacrifice, wasafterwards built upon this same mount Moriah; and Calvary, whereChrist was crucified, was near. Genesis 22: 15-19

There are high declarations of God's favour to Abraham in thisconfirmation of the covenant with him, exceeding any he had yet beenblessed with. Those that are willing to part with any thing for God,shall have it made up to them with unspeakable advantage. Thepromise, ver. #18|, doubtless points at the Messiah, and the grace of the gospel. Hereby we know the loving-kindness of God our Saviourtowards sinful man, in that he hath not withheld his Son, his only Son,from us. Hereby we perceive the love of Christ, in that he gave

himself a sacrifice for our sins. Yet he lives, and calls to sinners tocome to him, and partake of his blood-bought salvation. He calls tohis redeemed people to rejoice in him, and to glorify him. What thenshall we render for all his benefits? Let his love constrain us to livenot to ourselves, but to Him who died for us, and rose again.
