The traditional method of determiningthe nutritional composition of milk is toash it at high temperatures to removethe organic matter followed up by anacid digest. This process can take up to
a day to perform.
As well as time costs involved and needfor costly equipment and chemicalsthere is a possibility of either losingvolatile elements in the ashing stage orthe possibility of contamination in thedigestion stage.
As an alternative methodology, GBCchemists devised a 3% slurry techniquefor milk analysis.
This much simplified technique simplyrequires weighing a milk powder thenadding distilled/deionised water anddirectly analysing.

concentration in sump oil canpinpoint potential engine trouble.The presence of tin may becaused by bearing wear. Thepresence of chromium, aluminiumor nickel may be because ofpiston or ring wear. Copper isindicative of coolant leaking intothe lubrication system via cracksor poor seals and silicon maysuggest dirt or sand intrusionindicating that the air filter needs
to be cleaned or replaced.This analysis is best performed byICP due to its speed and theability to analyse elements such asS and P.
The oil samples andorganometallic standards aredissolved in kerosene and directlyaspirated into the plasma withoutthe need for Oxygen Accessoriesrequired by conventional ICPs to
avoid carbon build up. TheQuantima can perform thisfunction without an accessory andin addition a pump speed of 60rpm can be used pumpingkerosene between samples tospeed up sample introductionwithout the plasma turning off.

Accessories To Enhance Productivity

An argon humidifier is availableas an option to the Quantima.When fitted in series with thesample gas line and thestandard nebuliser, the argon
humidifier increases thetolerance of the sampleintroduction system to blockagesdue to high dissolved salts. Thisis achieved by bubbling argonthrough water to add a smallamount of humidity to the argongas supply. As the water vapourpasses through the nebuliserorifice it removes salt deposits asthey occur.
Plasma Integrity Protector -PIPTM significantly reduces theoccurrence of molten torches.Occasionally, under certainconditions, the plasma can
collapse and form what iscalled a parasitic plasma ordoughnut. Here the plasmacollapses into the top of thetorch and if the power to theRF generator is shut nodamage occurs. However, if thedoughnut is left, such as wouldhappen in an unattendedanalysis, the torch would meltwithin a few seconds. GBC hasdevised and patented the PIPwhich is an option on theQuantima. The PIPTM
immediately shuts power to theRF Generator as soon as itdetects a change from anormal plasma to a parasiticplasma. The occurrence ofmolten torches are significantlyreduced.
ICP users often look at thePlasma to determine quickly
whether either the sample hasreached the plasma or whetherthe rinse solution has flushed itout. With an optional PlasmaCamTM, the end user can now
view this and more from theconvenience of the computerscreen.

For less experienced users, theQuantima software provides an
intelligent auto-optimisationsoftware package that simplifiesthe complex task of setting upinstrument operating parametersoptimised for individualapplications. Now there is noneed to understand the complexityof how all of the operatingparameters interact with eachother. There is no need to predictthe effect on sensitivity on aparticular wavelength as theoperating conditions are changed.Quantimas auto-optimisationsoftware will perform all themeasurements and calculationsaccording to your selectedoptimisation criteria. A Simplex isa mathematical procedure fordetermining optimum values for arange of inter-dependentparameters. GBC has modifiedthe traditional fixed stepmultivariate Simplex to usevariable step size as opposed to

The SDS720 is a precisionengineered X-Y-Z autosampler.The SDS720 provides accurate
