ALFA ROMEO I.C.S.SYSTEM

CONTROLS ON STEERINGWHEEL (fig. 2)(on request for versions/marketswhere applicable)

The main audio functions (AUDIO) ofthe Alfa Romeo I.C.S. system are repeat-ed on the steering wheel, which facili-tates control.

A - Mute button

B - Volume highering button

C - Volume lowering button

D - Multifunction key:

– Radio: call preset stations (1 to 6)

– CD player: select next track

E - Multifunction key:

– Radio: call preset stations (6 to 1)

– CD player: select previous track

F - Radio frequency range select button(FM-A, FM-B, FM-AS, MW, LW) and avail-able audio sources (Radio – Cassetteplayer –CD player).

Mute key (A)

To turn the Mute function on, brieflypress button (A): the volume will lowergradually.

To turn the Mute function off, brieflypress button (A) again. The volume willhigher gradually returning to the previous-ly set value.

The Mute function is also turned offpressing one of the volume adjustmentkeys (B) or (C): in this event volume isdirectly changed.

When the Mute function is on, all theother functions can be used and if trafficinformation is received the message ig-nores the Mute function.

Volume adjustment keys (B) and(C)

Press (B) to increase volume and (C)to lower it.

Pressing briefly the key volume changeis gradual by steps. Pressing it longer vol-ume change is faster.

If volume is changed during a traffic bul-letin, the new value is kept only for thebulletin in progress.

Multifunction keys (D) and (E)

Multifunction keys (D) and (E) shall beused for tuning preset radio stations, forbackward rewinding and for selectingnext/previous CD track.

Press (D) to select stations from 1 to 6,or to play next CD track.

Press (E) to select stations from 6 to 1,to play previous CD track.

Frequency range and audiosource select key (F)

To cyclically select the frequency rangesand audio sources, briefly and repeatedlypress key (F).

The frequencies/sources available are:FM-A, FM-B, FM-AS, MW, LW, CC*,CD**.

(*) Only if the cassette is inserted.

(**) Only if a CD is inserted.

THE ALFA ROMEOCODE SYSTEM

To increase protection against attemptedtheft, the car is fitted with an electronicengine lock system (Alfa Romeo CODE)certified in accordance with EC Directive95/56 which is activated automaticallywhen the key is removed from the igni-tion.

In fact the grip of each key contains anelectronic device which modulates the ra-dio frequency signal transmitted when theengine is started by a special aerial incor-porated in the ignition switch.

This modulated signal is the “password”by which the control unit recognises thekey and only in this condition can the en-gine be started.

THE KEYS

The car is provided with the key (A-fig. 4) with metal insert with power-as-sisted opening, remote control for openingthe boot and remote control for unlock-ing/locking the doors and electronic alarm(where applicable).

The key operates:– the ignition– door locks– boot lock– glovebox lock– remote door locking/unlocking sys-

tem– alarm system (optional for versions/

markets where applicable)– deactivation of the passenger’s Air

bag.

IMPORTANT In order to ensure theperfect efficiency of the electronic devicescontained inside the key, avoid exposingit to direct sunlight.

KEY WITH RADIO FREQUENCY TRANSMITTER WITH RE-CLOSABLE METALLICINSERT WITH POWER-ASSISTED OPENING (fig. 6)(optional for versions/markets whereapplicable)

The key is fitted with:

– a metallic insert (A) that can be re-closed in the key grip

– button (B) for power-assisted open-ing of the metallic insert

– button (C) for remote opening/clos-ing of the doors and turning the electronicalarm on/off (where fitted)

– led (D) that signals the sending ofthe code to the electronic alarm systemreceiver

The CODE card (fig. 5), provided withthe key, bears the key codes (both me-chanical and electronic code for emer-gency starting).

The code numbers on the CODE cardmust be kept in a safe place, not in thecar.

The driver should always keep the elec-tronic code given on the CODE card withhim in the event of having to carry out emergency starting.

If the car changes own-ership the new ownermust be given all the

keys and the CODE card.

To insert the metallic insert in the keygrip, keep button (B-fig. 6) pressedand turn the insert on the direction of thearrow until it clicks into place, then re-lease the button (B).

To open/close the doors by remote con-trol, press button (C). On cars fitted withelectronic alarm system, pressing button(C) also turns the electronic alarm on/offand the led (D) flashes while the trans-mitter sends the code to the receiver. Thisrolling code changes at each transmis-sion.

IMPORTANT If led (D) flashes onlyonce briefly when button (C) is pressed,the battery need changing as describedbelow.

Opening the boot

The boot can be opened by remote control from outside pressing button (E-fig. 6), also when the electronic alarm(where fitted) is on.

In this case the alarm disengages theboot control sensor, the system (with theexception of versions for certain markets)sounds two beeps and the direction indi-cators light up for about three seconds.

When the boot is closed again the con-trol function is restored, the system (withthe exception of versions for certain mar-kets) sounds two beeps and the directionindicators light up for about three sec-onds.

When button (B) is pres-sed, take the utmost care

to prevent the metal insert fromcausing injury or damage when itcomes out. Button (B) must only bepressed when the key is awayfrom the body, in particular theeyes, and from objects that couldbe spoilt (e.g. clothes).Never leave the key unattended toprevent anyone, especially chil-dren, from holding it and pressingbutton (B) inadvertently.

KEY BATTERY CHANGE

If pressing the remote control buttons(A or B-fig. 7), the led (C-fig. 7)gives only one brief flash and the alarmsystem led (where fitted) (A-fig. 8) onthe dashboard stays on glowing steadilyfor about 2 minutes (after turning off thealarm and with the ignition switch off), itis necessary to replace the battery with anew one of the equivalent type to befound c/o normal retailers.

To replace the battery, remove the plas-tic lid (A-fig. 9), insert the new batteryaccording to the correct polarity and putthe lid back on.

OPERATION

Each time the ignition key is turned tothe STOP position, the Alfa RomeoCODE system deactivates the functions ofthe engine electronic control unit.

Each time the engine is started, turningthe key to the MAR position, the controlunit of the Alfa Romeo CODE systemsends a recognition code to the enginecontrol unit to deactivate the inhibition ofthe functions.

The recognition code, which is cryptedand variable between over 4 billion com-binations, is only sent if the system con-trol unit has recognised the code sent toit by the key, which contains an electronictransmitter, through an aerial in the igni-tion switch.

Dead batteries consti-tute a hazard for theenvironment and must

be disposed of in the special con-tainers as specified by the rela-tive laws.

This condition is indicated by a briefflash of the warning light (A-fig.10) on the check panel.

If the code has not been recognised cor-rectly, the Alfa Romeo CODE systemwarning light (A-fig. 10) stays ontogether with the EOBD/fuel supply-igni-tion system failure warning light (B-fig.10) .

In this case, you are recommended to re-turn the key to the STOP position andthan back to MAR; if the inhibition per-sists, try again possibly with the other keyprovided with the car. If it is still impossibleto start the car, carry out the emergency starting procedure described herein andturn to an Alfa Romeo Authorized Service.

IMPORTANT Every electronic key hasits own code, which must be memorisedby the system control unit. To memorisenew keys, up to a maximum of seven,apply solely to Alfa Romeo AuthorizedServices taking with you all the keys in your possession, the CODE card, a person-al identity document and the car’s posses-sion documents.

The codes of the keysnot provided during thenew memorising proce-

dure are erased from the memo-ry. This is to ensure that any lostor stolen keys can no longer beused to start the car.

IMPORTANT The Alfa Romeo CODEwarning light comes on when travellingwith the ignition key on MAR:

1) If the warning lamp lights up whilethe car is moving, it means that the sys-tem is running a self-diagnosis (e.g. due toa voltage drop). The first time you stop y-ou can test the system as follows: switchthe engine off by turning the ignition key

to STOP; then turn the key back toMAR: the warning lamp will light up andshould go out in the space of about onesecond. If the warning lamp fails to goout, leave the key at STOP for more than30 seconds and repeat the procedure de-scribed previously. If the problem persists,contact your Authorised Alfa Romeo Dealer.

2) If the warning lamp flashes it meansthat the car is not protected by the immo-biliser. Contact your Authorized AlfaRomeo Code Dealer immediately and getthem to store the codes of all the keys inthe memory.

If after about 2 secondswith the key in theMAR position, the Alfa

Romeo CODE warning light turnson again flashing at appr. halfsecond intervals, this means thatthe code of the keys has notbeen memorised, thus the car isnot protected by the Alfa RomeoCODE system against attemptedtheft. In this case, contact an Au-thorized Alfa Romeo Service tohave the key codes memorised.

IMPORTANT In the case of fast start-ing, turning the key directly from STOPto AVV, the recognition code might notbe transmitted completely, preventing theengine from starting: try again more slowly.

IMPORTANT The system is protectedby two fuses housed in the main fusebox(see “If a fuse or relay blows” in thechapter “In an emergency”).

EMERGENCY STARTING

If it is not possible to deactivate the en-gine inhibitor with the ignition key, AlfaRomeo Authorized Services can carry outthe emergency procedures using the codeof the CODE card, or, you may do thisyourself, following the procedure de-scribed below.

IMPORTANT You are advised to care-fully read the entire procedure before car-rying it out.

If a mistake is made during the emer-gency procedure, the ignition key shouldbe turned to the STOP position and theoperations must be repeated from the s-tart (point 1).

1) Read the 5-figure electronic code onthe CODE card.

2) Turn the ignition key to the MARposition.

3) Fully depress the accelerator pedaland keep it pressed. The EOBD/fuel sup-ply-ignition system failure warning light

will come on for eight seconds ap-proximately and will then go out; now re-lease the accelerator pedal.

4) The warning light begins toflash: after it has flashed for the samenumber of times as the first digit on thecode of the card, press completely andhold down the accelerator pedal until thewarning light comes on (for 4 sec-onds) and then goes out again; now re-lease the accelerator pedal.

5) The warning light will begin toflash: after it has flashed for the samenumber of times as the second digit onthe code of the CODE card, press com-pletely and hold down the acceleratorpedal.

6) Repeat this procedure in the sameway for the other digits on the CODE cardcode.

7) After entering the last figure, keepthe accelerator pedal pressed. The warn-ing light turns on (for four seconds)and then goes off; now release the accel-erator pedal.

8) A quick flash of the warning light(for appr. 4 seconds) confirms that

the operation has taken place correctly.

9) Start the car turning the ignition keyfrom the MAR position to the AVV po-sition without returning the key to theSTOP position.

Conversely, if the warning light stays on, turn the ignition key to STOPand repeat the procedure starting frompoint 1).

IMPORTANT After emergency start-ing it is advisable to turn to an AlfaRomeo Authorized Service, because theprocedure described must be repeatedeach time the engine is started.

ELECTRONIC ALARM(optional for versions/markets whereapplicable)

DESCRIPTION

The system certified in accordance withEC Directive 95/56 comprises: transmit-ter , receiver, control unit with siren andvolumetric sensors. The electronic alarmis controlled by the receiver and it isturned on and off through the remotecontrol incorporated in the key whichsends the crypted, variable code. Theelectronic alarm monitors: unlawful open-ing of the doors, bonnet and boot(perimetral protection), operation of theignition key, battery and emergency keycable cutting, the presence of movingbodies in the passenger compartment(volumetric protection) and operates thecentral door locking system. Is alsomakes it possible to cut off volumetricprotection and/or the siren.

IMPORTANT The engine inhibitorfunction is guaranteed by the Alfa RomeoCODE system which is activated automati-cally when the ignition key is removedfrom the lock.

REMOTE CONTROL (fig. 11)

The remote control is incorporated in thekey and it is fitted with a button (A) anda led (B); the button activates the con-trol, the led flashes while the transmittersends the code to the receiver. This code(rolling code) changes at each transmis-sion.

IMPORTANT If, when pressing thepush-button (A), the led (B) issues just ashort flash, replace the batteries asshown in the previous paragraph.

Request for additional remotecontrols

The receiver can recognise up to 5 re-mote controls.

If during the life of the car a new re-mote control is needed for any reasonwhatsoever, contact Alfa Romeo Autho-rized services directly, taking with you theCODE card, a personal identity documentand the car’s possession documents.

ACTIVATING THE ALARM

When the doors and boot/bonnet lidsare closed and the ignition key is in theSTOP position (key removed), point theremote control towards the car and pressthe button on the ignition key.

With the exception of some markets thesystem sounds a “BEEP”, the hazardwarning lights turn on for appr. three sec-onds and the door lock is engaged.

Engagement of the alarm is precededby a self-diagnosis characterised by achange in the frequency at which the led(A-fig. 12) flashes. If an anomaly isdetected the system gives off a further“BEEP”.

Surveillance

When the system has been turned on,the led (A-fig. 12) on the dashboardwill flash to indicate that the system is inthe surveillance mode.

The led (A) inside the car flashesthroughout the whole time the vehicle isunder surveillance.

IMPORTANT Operation of the elec-tronic alarm is adapted at the origin tothe regulations of the different countries.

Self-diagnosis and monitoring ofdoors and bonnet/boot

If, after the alarm has been activated, asecond acoustic signal is heard, checkthat all the doors and bonnet/boot areclosed properly and engage the systemonce again.

On the other hand, if a door or bon-net/boot lid is not correctly closed it willnot be controlled by the system.

If the control signal is repeated whenthe doors and bonnet/boot are closedproperly this means that the self-diagno-sis function has detected a system operat-ing fault, in which case it is necessarycontact Alfa Romeo Authorized Services.

DEACTIVATING THE ALARM

To deactivate the alarm press the buttonon the remote control. The system per-forms the following (with the exceptionof some markets):

– the direction indicators turn on twicebriefly

– two beeps are sounded briefly by thesiren

– the doors are released.

IMPORTANT If the led in the car s-tays on when the system has been deac-tivated, (maximum of 2 minutes or untilthe ignition key is moved to MAR) thefollowing should be borne in mind:

– if the led stays on permanently, itmeans that the remote control batteriesare flat and need replacing;

– if the led continues to flash, but atdifferent intervals than normal, it meansthat attempts to steal the car have beenmade, counting the number of flashes itis also possible to identify the type of at-tempt:

1 flash: right front door

2 flashes: left front door

3 flashes: right rear door

8 flashes: tampering with car startingcables

WHEN THE ALARM ISTRIGGERED

When the alarm is engaged it will soundwhen:

– One of the doors, the bonnet or theboot is opened.

– The battery is disconnected or theelectric cables are cut, or the emergencykey cables are cut.

– Intrusion into the passenger compart-ment, e.g. window being broken (volu-metric protection).

– Attempt to start the engine (key atMAR).

Depending on the markets, the trigger-ing of the alarm will activate the sirenand the hazard warning lights (for about26 seconds). The methods of operationand the number of cycles may vary de-pending on the versions/markets. How-ever a maximum number of cycles is fore-seen. Once the alarm cycle has come toan end the system will return to its nor-mal monitoring state.

SWITCHING OFF THE ALARM

To switch off the alarm, press the re-mote control button on the key. If thealarm does not turn off due to a flat re-mote control battery or system fault,open the door after unlocking with thelock key, then place the key in the igni-tion switch and turn it to MAR.

To turn on the alarm again, turn the keyto STOP and remove it, then press theremote control button after leaving thecar and shutting the doors. If the alarmdoes not turn on and the led on the re-mote control gives only one brief flashwhile the led on the dashboard stays onglowing steadily for about 2 minutes, thekey battery should be replaced by a newone of the equivalent type on sale c/onormal retailers. To change the batteryfollow the instructions given at paragraph“Key battery change” on previous pages.

If it is not possible to switch on thealarm with a new remote control battery,contact Alfa Romeo Authorised Servicesto have the system checked.

IMPORTANT If the car is to remain i-nactive for a prolonged length of time(over three weeks) and security condi-tions permitting, it is advisable to operatecentral locking turning the key in the doorlock to avoid engaging the alarm anddraining the battery.

VOLUMETRIC PROTECTION

To guarantee correct operation, all thewindows and the sunroof (optional forversions/markets where applicable)should be closed. This function can be ex-cluded (for example when leaving ani-mals on-board the vehicle) by performingthe following operations in quick succes-sion: when the ignition key is at theMAR position, move the key to theSTOP position and then return the keyto the MAR and then once again to theSTOP position. Remove the ignition key.The led in the vehicle will come on forabout 2 seconds to confirm that the func-tion has been excluded.

To restore volumetric protection movethe ignition key to the MAR positionand hold it in this position for more than30 seconds.

If requiring to activate an electric controloperated by the ignition key at MAR(e.g. electric windows) with the volumet-ric protection deactivated, turn the igni-tion key to MAR, operate the controland return the key to STOP within amaximum time of 30 seconds. This wayvolumetric protection is not restored.

CUTTING OUT OPERATION OFTHE SIREN (optional for versions/markets whereapplicable)

When requiring to dispense with thesiren acoustic signalling in the alarm con-dition, simply keep the remote controlbutton (A-fig. 13) pressed for 4 sec-onds when engaging the system.

This condition is shown by a series of 5beeps in quick succession after the nor-mal acoustic/visual signals when the sys-tem is operated.

The next time the system is activated,normal operation of the siren is restoredautomatically.

REMOTE CONTROLDOOR LOCKING SYSTEM

The system comprises a receiver and atransmitter (remote control) incorporatedin the key (B-fig. 14). To lock/unlockthe locks, point the transmitter towardsthe car, press and release the button (C). If, when pressing the remote controlpush-button (C), the led (A) issues justa short flash, replace the batteries as de-scribed in the “The Alfa Romeo CODEsystem” paragraph.

IMPORTANT Should it be necessaryto programme additional remote controls,contact Alfa Romeo Authorized Services.

IGNITION DEVICE

THE SWITCH (fig. 15)

The switch has four positions:

– STOP: engine switched off, key canbe removed, engine lock engaged, steer-ing lock engaged, all services excluded a-part from those powered directly (e.g.hazard warning light I.C.S. system (ex-cept climate control).

– ACC: position for using the cigarlighter and of the I.C.S. system (exceptclimate control).

– MAR: drive position. The enginelock is deactivated and all electrical de-vices are powered.

IMPORTANT Never leave the key inthis position when the engine is station-ary.

– AVV: starting the engine.

IMPORTANT If the engine does notstart return the ignition key to the STOPposition and repeat the sequence.

The ignition block is fitted with a safetydevice preventing it from being moved tothe AVV position when the engine is al-ready running.

If the ignition device istampered with (for ex-ample during an at-

tempted break-in) have it checkedover by Alfa Romeo AuthorizedServices, before travelling again.

STEERING LOCK

Engaging lock:– move the key to the STOP position

and remove the key lightly turning thesteering wheel to facilitate the locking ac-tion.

Releasing the lock:– turn the key to the MAR position

and gently rock the steering wheel inboth directions.

When leaving the vehiclealways remove the key

from the ignition to prevent anypassenger in the car from inadver-tently activating the controls.Never leave children unattended ina car. Remember to engage thehandbrake and if the vehicle is fac-ing uphill, first gear and if the ve-hicle is facing downhill, reverse.

AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKING

The automatic door locking function acti-vates automatically when the car speedexceeds 20 km/h.

This function can be deactivated and re-activated by the following procedure, tobe carried out with the car at a standstill,key at STOP and doors closed:

- turn the key to MAR

- keep button (A-fig. 20) on the cen-tral console pressed until completing a fullcentralised door locking cycle (openingand closing or vice versa).

IMPORTANT Depending on the ver-sions/markets the lock for the key mayonly be present on the driver’s door.

– To close the door, turn the key in theopposite direction.

Rear doors

– To open the door, only with the innerknob (A-fig. 17) raised, pull the open-ing handle (B-fig. 18).

– To close the door in safety, press thebutton (A-fig. 17) also with the dooropen, then close it.

OPENING/CLOSING FROMOUTSIDE

Front doors

– To open the door, turn the key (clock-wise for the driver’s door, counter-clock-wise for the passenger’s door) and thenremove the key and pull the handle (A-fig. 16).

– From inside: with the doors closed,press the button (A-fig. 20) on thecentre console or one of the knobs(B-fig. 19) on the front doors to en-gage (lock) central locking.

By pressing the knob (A-fig. 21) onone of the rear doors only that particulardoor will be locked.

To unlock central locking press the buttonagain (A-fig. 20).

IMPORTANT For the front doors it isnot possible to keep the knob (B-fig. 19) down if the door has not beenshut properly.

IMPORTANT If the power supply isinterrupted (burnt fuse, battery discon-nected etc.) each door can be openedmanually from both inside and outsidethe vehicle.

IMPORTANT The centralized lockingsystem can be deactivated, thus unlock-ing all doors, by lifting the door openinglever on one of the two front doors.

CHILD SAFETY LOCK (fig. 22)

The rear doors are equipped with a spe-cial device which prevents the door beingopened from inside.

The device can be engaged when thedoor is open by acting on the relative con-trol using the ignition key.

Position 1 = Device inactive

Position 2 = Device engaged.

This device should be used when chil-dren are in the back seat to prevent themfrom opening the door whilst the car ismoving.

IMPORTANT Do not overlook childsafety; the following recommendationsshould be heeded:

– Engage the child safety device.

– Do not leave a child alone in the vehi-cle.

– Follow the current laws regardingchild restraint and safety systems.

After activating the safetydevice check that it is

working correctly by pulling on theinner lever used to open the door.

FRONT SEATS

Manual adjustment controls

Moving the seat backwards orforwards

Lift lever (A-fig. 23) and push theseat backwards or forwards.

IMPORTANT Once you have let goof the lever, check that the seat is firmlylocked in the runners by trying to move itback and forth. If the seat is not lockedproperly, in the case of collision it mightmove unexpectedly with clearly danger-ous consequences.

Adjusting the height of the driver’s seat

To raise the seat, pull the lever (B-fig. 23) taking it upwards, then contin-ue operating the lever (up and down) un-til reaching the required height. To lowerthe seat, push the lever (B) downwards,then operate the lever (up and down) un-til reaching the height required.

IMPORTANT Adjustment must onlybe carried out when seated in the driver’sseat.

Seat inclination power adjustmentThe adjustment is performed by apply-

ing pressure on the front or back part ofthe two-position switch (C-fig. 23).

Seat warming (fig. 24)(optional for versions/markets whereapplicable)

The seat warming pad can be switchedon and off using switch (A) on the outerside of the seat.

When the warming pad is on, the ledon the switch turns on.

Adjustments may bemade solely with the car

stationary.

The position of the seats is adjustedelectrically with the controls (A-fig. 25-26) and (B-fig. 25-27):

A - Multifunction control:1 - raising the front of the seat2 - raising the rear of the seat3 - vertical movement of the seat4 - longitudinal movement of the seat.

B - Multifunction control:5 - seat back rake adjustment6 - lumbar adjustment of the seat.

C - Seat heating.

Lumbar adjustment of the seat is carriedout raising or lowering the control (B-fig. 25-27), until finding the mostcomfortable position.

Seat heating (fig. 28)

Seat heating is turned on and off usingthe switch (C) on the outer side of theseat.

When seat warming is on the led on theswitch lights up.

Memorising the driver’s seat positions (fig. 29)

The system makes it possible to memo-rise and call up three different positionsof the driver’s seat.

To memorise a seat position, proceed asfollows:

1) Adjust the position of the driver’sseat with the controls described in theprevious paragraph.

2) Simultaneously press (for about 1second) the button (MEM-fig. 29)and one of the buttons (1), (2), or (3),each corresponding to a position that canbe memorised.

3) Proceed in the same way to memo-rise the other two positions of the seat.

Adjusting the headrests (fig. 30)

Front headrests are adjustable in heightand rake: to adjust the height, move theheadrest up or down, then release it andmake sure that it is locked on one of thepositions provided. To adjust the rake,turn the headrest forwards to the requiredposition.

IMPORTANT The shape of the head-rest may vary depending on the versionand/or market. The example shown isused only to demonstrate the methods bywhich it can be adjusted.

When memorising a new position of theseat the previous one memorised withthe same button is cleared automatically.

Keeping the corresponding button (1),(2), or (3) pressed the positions memo-rised can be called even if the ignitionkey is in the STOP position or removed.

IMPORTANT Memorising the posi-tions of the seat does not include turningon the heating.

Remember that the headrestraints must be posi-

tioned so that they are supportingthe back of the head and not theneck. They will only be able to pro-vide effective protection in theevent of a collision if they are inthis position.

STEERING WHEEL ADJUSTMENT (fig. 38)

The steering wheel position is adjustableand may be moved nearer to or furtheraway from the driver and also raised orlowered.

To do this, it is necessary to releaselever (A) pulling it towards the steeringwheel. After setting the steering wheel inthe most appropriate position, lock itpushing the lever forwards fully home.

ADJUSTING THEREAR-VIEW MIRRORS

INTERNAL REAR-VIEWMIRROR (fig. 39-40)

The mirror, fitted with a safety devicewhich releases it in the event of a violentimpact can be moved to two positions op-erating lever (A-fig. 39): normal or an-ti-glare.

FRONT

Driver’s side (fig. 44)

The driver’s door armrest contains thebuttons which, with the ignition key atMAR, operate the following windows:

A - left front window

B - right front window.

Press the button to lower the window.Pull the button to raise it.

IMPORTANT The driver’s power win-dow is fitted with a “continuous automat-ic operation” device for both loweringand raising the window. A brief press onthe upper or lower part of the button willcause the window to move and continueits stroke automatically: the windowstops in the position required by pressingeither the upper or lower part of the but-ton again.

With the ignition key at STOP or re-moved, the power windows remain acti-vated for about 2 minutes or until a frontdoor is opened.

Passenger’s side (fig. 45)

Button (A) is used to operate the pas-senger’s window.

The passenger’s window is fitted with adevice for “continuous automatic opera-tion” only for lowering it.

The device works as describes for thedriver’s window.

REAR

The rear windows are operated by thesplit controls on the driver’s door andthose on each rear door.

With the ignition key on MAR, pressthe button to lower the window, pull thebutton or raise it.

Controls on driver’s door (fig. 46)

Incorrect use of thepower windows can be

dangerous. Before and during op-eration of them always make surethat the passengers are not ex-posed to the risk of harm causedeither directly by the windows inmotion or by personal objectsdrawn or knocked by them. Whenleaving the vehicle always removethe ignition key to prevent pas-sengers (especially children) frombeing injured by the power win-dows inadvertently operated.

SEAT BELTS

USING THE SEAT BELTS

The belt should be worn keeping thechest straight and rested against the seatback.

Take hold the tongue (A-fig. 48) andinsert it into the buckle (B), until hearingthe locking click.

At removal, if it jams, let it rewind for ashort stretch, then pull it out again with-out jerking.

To unfasten the seat belts, press button(C).

Guide the seat belt with your handwhile it is rewinding, to prevent it fromtwisting.

Through the reel, the belt automaticallyadapts to the body of the passengerwearing it, allowing freedom of move-ment.

When the car is parked on a steep slopethe reel mechanism may block; this isnormal. The reel mechanism prevents thewebbing coming out when it is jerked orif the car brakes sharply, in a collision orwhen cornering at high speed.

The rear seat is fitted with inertial seatbelts with three anchor points with reel forthe side seats and an abdominal belt withtwo anchor points for the centre (A-fig.49) seat. For versions/markets where ap-plicable, the centre seat can be fitted withinertial seat belt with three anchor pointsand reel like side seats (fig. 50).

PRETENSIONERS

To increase the efficiency of the frontseat belts, the Alfa 166 is fitted withpretensioners.

These devices “feel”, through a sensor,that a violent crash is in progress andrewind the seat belts a few centimetres.In this way they ensure that the seat beltadheres perfectly to the wearer beforethe restraining action begins.

The seat belt locks to indicate that thedevice has intervened; the seat belt can-not be drawn back up even when guidingit manually.

IMPORTANT To obtain the highestdegree of protection from the action ofthe pretensioning device, wear the seatbelt keeping it firmly close to the chestand pelvis.

Front seat pretensioners activate only iffront seat belts are properly fitted intobuckles.

A small amount of smoke may be pro-duced. This smoke is in no way toxic andpresents no fire hazard.

The pretensioner does not require anymaintenance or greasing. Anything thatmodifies its original conditions invalidatesits efficiency. If due to unusual naturalevents (floods, sea storm, etc.) the de-vice has been affected by water andmud, it must necessarily be replaced.

After adjustment, alwayscheck that the slider is

anchored in one of the positionsprovided. To do this, with the but-ton (A-fig. 52) released, exert afurther pressure to allow the an-chor device to catch if release didnot take place at one of the presetpositions.

WARNINGThe pretensioner can onlybe used once. After a col-

lision that has triggered it, have itreplaced at an Alfa Romeo Autho-rized Services. The validity of thedevice is 10 years starting fromthe date of production, the preten-sioners should be replaced at anAlfa Romeo Authorized Services asthis date approaches.

WARNING

This precaution could greatly reduce therisk of injury in case of collision.

Correct adjustment is obtained when thebelt passes half way between the end ofthe shoulder and the neck.

Operations which lead toknocks, vibrations or lo-calised heating (over

100°C for a maximum of 6 hours)in the area around the pretension-ers may cause damage or triggerthem. These devices are not af-fected by vibrations caused by ir-regularities of the road surface orlow obstacles such as kerbs, etc.Contact a Alfa Romeo AuthorizedServices for any assistance.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FORUSING THE SEAT BELTS

The driver must comply with (and havethe vehicle occupants follow) all the locallegal regulations concerning the use ofseat belts.

Always fasten the seat belts before s-tarting.

For maximum safety,keep the back of your

seat upright, lean back into it andmake sure the seat belt fits closelyacross your chest and hips. Make sure that the seat belts ofthe front and rear passengers arefastened at all times! You increasethe risk of serious injury or deathin a collision if you travel with thebelts unfastened.

WARNING

The belt should not betwisted, make sure that it

is taut and adheres to the passen-ger’s body. The upper part shouldpass over the shoulder and crossthe chest diagonally. The lower partshould adhere to the pelvis and tothe abdomen of the passenger, (fig.53). Do not use any objects (pegs,stoppers, etc.) to keep the beltsaway from the body.

WARNING

Under no circumstancesshould the components of

the seat belts and pretensioner betampered with or removed. Anyoperation should be carried out byqualified and authorised personnel.Always contact Alfa Romeo Au-thorized Services. If the belt hasbeen subjected to heavy stress, forexample after an accident, itshould be changed completely to-gether with the anchors, anchorfastening screws and the preten-sioners. In fact, even if the belt hasno visible defects, it could havelost its resilience.

Seat belts are also to be worn by expec-tant mothers: the risk of injury in the caseof accident is greatly reduced for themand the unborn child if they are wearinga seat belt.

Of course they must position the lowerpart of the belt very low down so that itpasses under the abdomen (fig. 55).

HOW TO KEEP THE SEAT BELTSALWAYS IN EFFICIENTCONDITIONS

1) Always use the belt with the tapetaut and never twisted; make sure that itis free to run without impediments.

2) After a serious accident, replace thebelt being worn at that time, even if itdoes not appear damaged. Always re-place the seat belts if pretensioners havebeen activated.

3) To clean the belts, wash by handwith neutral soap, rinse and leave to dryin the shade. Never use strong deter-gents, bleach or dyes or other chemicalsubstance that might weaken the fibres.

4) Prevent the reels from getting wet:their correct operation is only guaranteedif water does not get inside.

5) Replace the seat belt when showingsignificant wear or cut signs.

Never travel with a childsitting on the passen-

ger’s lap with a single belt to pro-tect them both (fig. 54). Do notfasten other objects to the body.

CARRYING CHILDREN SAFELY For optimal protection in the event of acrash, all passengers must be seated andwearing adequate restraint systems.

This is even more warning for children.

According to 2003/20/EC Directive,this prescription is compulsory for all Euro-pean Community countries.

Compared with adults, their head is pro-portionally larger and heavier than therest of the body, while the muscles andbone structure are not completely devel-oped. Therefore, correct restraint systemsare necessary, other then adult seat belts.

SERIOUS DANGER: Never place cradle child’s seats on thefront passenger seat of cars fitted with passenger air bag

since the air bag activation could cause serious injuries, even mortal. Youare advised to carry children always on the rear seat, as this is the mostprotected position in the case of a crash. In any case, children's seats mustabsolutely not be fitted on the front seat of car’s with passenger’s air bag,which during inflation could cause serious injury, even mortal, regardlessof the seriousness of the crash that triggered it.Children may be placed on the front seat of cars fitted with passenger’sair bag deactivation. In this case, it is absolutely necessary to check thewarning light F on the cluster to make sure that deactivation has ac-tually taken place (see paragraph “Front and side air bags” at item “Pas-senger’s front air bag”). The front passenger seat shall be adjusted in themost backward position to prevent any contact between child’s seat anddashboard.

The results of research on the best childrestraint systems are contained in the Eu-ropean Standard ECE-R44. This Standardenforces the use of restraint systems clas-sified in five groups:

Group 0 0-10 kg in weight

Group 0+ 0-13 kg in weight

Group 1 9-18 kg in weight

Group 2 15-25 kg in weight

Group 3 22-36 kg in weight

As it may be noted, the groups overlappartly and in fact, in commerce it is possi-ble to find devices that cover more thanone weight group (fig. 56).

All restraint devices must bear the certi-fication data, together with the controlbrand, on a solidly fixed label which mustabsolutely never be removed. Over481.50 m in height, from the point ofview of restraint systems, children areconsidered as adults and wear the seatbelts normally.

Lineaccessori Alfa Romeo offers seatsfor each weight group, which are the rec-ommended choice, as they have been de-signed and experimented specifically forAlfa Romeo cars.

GROUP 0 and 0+

Babies up to 13 kg must be carried fac-ing backwards on a cradle seat, which,supporting the head, does not inducestress on the neck in the event of sharpdeceleration. The cradle is restrained bythe car seat belts, as shown in (fig. 57)and in turn it must restrain the child withits own belts.

GROUP 1

Starting from 9 kg to 18 kg in weight,children may be carried facing forwards,with seats fitted with front cushion (fig. 58), through which the car seatbelt restrains both child and seat.

GROUP 2

Starting from 15 kg to 25 kg in weight,children may be restrained directly by thecar belts. The only function of the seat is toposition the child correctly in relation to thebelts, so that the diagonal part adheres tothe chest and not to the neck and that thehorizontal part clings to the child’s pelvisand not the abdomen (fig. 59).

GROUP 3

For children from 22 kg up to 36 kg thesize of the child’s chest no longer requiresa support to space the child’s back fromthe seat back.

(Fig. 60) shows proper child seat posi-tioning on the rear seat.

Children taller than 1.50 m can wearseat belts like adults.

Seats exist which aresuitable for covering

weight groups 0 and 1 with a rearconnection to the vehicle belts andtheir own belts to restrain thechild. Due to their size, they can bedangerous if installed incorrectlyfastened to the car belts with acushion. Carefully follow the in-structions for installation providedwith the seat.

Below is a summary of therules of safety to be followedfor carrying children:

1) The recommended position for in-stalling children’s seat is on the rear seat,as it is the most protected in the case ofa crash.

2) If the passenger’s air bag is deacti-vated always check the warning lightF on the cluster to make sure that ithas actually been deactivated.

3) Attain to the instructions for fasten-ing the specific child restraint systemwhich you are using. These instructionsmust be provided by the manufacturer.Keep the child restraint system installa-tion instructions with the car documentsand this Handbook. Never use a child re-straint system without installation instruc-tions.

4) Always check the seat belt is wellfastened by pulling the webbing.

5) Only one child is to be strapped toeach retaining system.

6) Always check the seat belts do notfit around the child’s throat.

7) While travelling, do not let the childsit incorrectly or release the belts.

8) Passengers should never carry chil-dren on their laps. No-one, howeverstrong they are, can hold a child in theevent of a crash.

9) In case of an accident, replace theseat with a new one.

In cars fitted with pas-senger air bag never

place child’s restraint systems onthe front seat since children shallnever be seated on the front pas-senger seat.

FRONT AND SIDEAIR BAGS

The car is fitted with front Air bags forthe driver (fig. 61) and front passenger(fig. 62), side bags (fig. 63) andfront window bags.

FRONT AIR BAGS

Description and operation

The front Air bag (driver’s and passen-ger’s) is a safety device that comes intoaction in the event of a head-on collision.

It is formed of an instantly-inflatingcushion contained in a special recess:

– in the centre of the steering wheel forthe driver,

– in the dashboard with a larger-sizedcushion for the passenger.

The front Air bag (driver’s and passen-ger’s) is a device designed to protect theoccupants in the event of head-on colli-sion of medium-high severity by the inter-position of the cushion between the occu-pant and the steering wheel or dash-board.

In the event of a crash, the electroniccontrol unit processes the signals leadingfrom a deceleration sensor and when nec-essary, triggers inflation of the cushion.

The cushion inflates instantly as a pro-tective barrier between the occupants’bodies and the structures which couldcause injury. The cushion deflates imme-diately afterwards.

The front Air bag (driver and passenger)has been designed to protect the occu-pants in the event of head-on crashes ofmedium-high severity, by placing thecushion between the occupant and the s-teering wheel or dashboard.

In case of crash, a person not wearingthe seat belt moves forward and maycome into contact with the cushion whileit is still inflating. Under this circumstancethe protection offered by the air bag is re-duced.

Front air bags are designed to protectcar’s occupants in front crashes and there-fore non-activation in other types of colli-sions (side collisions, rear-end shunts, roll-overs, etc…) is not a system malfunc-tion.

In collisions against highly deformableor mobile objects (such as road signs,heaps of gravel or snow, parked vehicles,etc.), in rear crashes (such as bumpsfrom behind by another vehicle), side im-pacts, and in case of wedging under othervehicles or protective barriers (for exam-ple under a truck or guard rail), the Airbag is not triggered as it offers no addi-tional protection compared with the seatbelts, consequently, it would be pointless.

Therefore the failure to be triggereddoes not mean that the system is notworking properly.

PASSENGER’S FRONT AIR BAG

The passenger’s front air bag has beendesigned to improve the protection of aperson wearing a seat belt.

It volume at maximum inflation fillsmost of the space between the dash-board and the passenger.

MANUAL DEACTIVATION OF PASSENGER’S FRONT AIR BAG

Should it be absolutely necessary to car-ry a child on the front seat, the passen-ger’s front Air bag can be deactivated.

Deactivation takes place operating thespecial key switch on the right of thedashboard (fig. 65) using the car’s igni-tion switch. Access to the switch is onlypossible with the door open.

SERIOUS DANGER: Thecar is fitted with an Air

bag on the passenger's side. Neverplace cradle child’s seats on thefront passenger seat of cars fittedwith passenger air bag since theair bag activation could cause se-rious injuries, even mortal. In thecase of need, always deactivatethe passenger's Air bag when achild's seat is placed on the frontseat. The front passenger seatshall be adjusted in the most back-ward position to prevent any con-tact between child’s seat anddashboard. Even if not compulsoryby law, you are recommended toreactivate the Air bag immediatelyas soon as child transport is nolonger necessary.

Deactivation/reactivation takes placewith ignition key at STOP and operatingit in the special key switch on the right-hand side of the dashboard (fig. 65).

You can reach the switch only if thedoor is opened.

The key switch (fig. 65) has two posi-tions:

1) Passenger’s front Air bag active(ON position P) warning light on clus-ter off; it is absolutely prohibited to carrychildren on the front seat.

2) Passenger’s front Air bag deactivat-ed (OFF position F) warning light oncluster on; it is possible to carry childrenprotected by special restraint systems onthe front seat.

The F warning light on the instru-ment cluster glows steadily until the pas-senger’s Air bag is reactivated.

Deactivation of the front passenger’s Airbag does not inhibit operation of the sideAir bag.

With the door open the key can be in-serted and removed in both positions.

Operate the switch onlywhen the engine is not

running and the ignition key is re-moved.

WARNING

Warning light F indi-cates also warning light

¬ failure. This is indicated by in-termittent flashing, over 4 sec-onds, of warning light F. In thisevent, warning light ¬ could benot up to indicate restraint systemfailures, if any. Stop the car andcontact Alfa Romeo AuthorizedServices to have the systemchecked.

SIDE AIR BAGS (SIDE BAG - FRONT WINDOW BAG)

Side air bags have the task of increasingprotection of the occupants in the event ofa side crash of medium-high severity.

They are made of two types of instantly-inflating cushions:

– side bags, housed in the back rest ofthe front seats; with this solution it is alwayspossible to have the air bag (cushion) in theoptimum position in relation to the passen-ger, regardless of the adjustment of theseat;

– front window bags, which are “curtain”cushions, are housed behind the side rooflinings; this solution designed to protect thehead, makes it possible to offer the highestdegree of protection to the front occupantsin the event of a side crash, thanks to thewide cushion inflation surface.

In the event of a side crash the electroniccontrol unit processes the signals leadingfrom a deceleration sensor and, when nec-essary, triggers inflation of the air bags.

The bags inflate instantaneously, settingthemselves between the body of the frontpassengers and the car door. The bags de-flate immediately afterwards.

In the event of minor side crashes (forwhich the restraining action of the seat beltsis sufficient), the air bags are not deployed.Also in this case it is of vital importance towear the seat belts since in case of sidecrash they guarantee proper positioning ofthe occupant and prevent the occupant tobe pitched out of the car in case of violentcrashes.

Therefore the side air bags do not replacebut are complementary to the use of belts,which you are recommended to alwayswear, as specified by law in Europe andmost non-European countries.

Operation of the side air bags and frontwindow bags is not disabled by the front airbag deactivation switch, as described in theprevious paragraphs.

IMPORTANT In the event of sidecrash, you can obtain the best protectionby the system keeping a correct positionon the seat, thus allowing correct frontwindow bag unfolding.

WARNING Never resthead, arms and elbows

on the door, on the windows andin the front window bag area toprevent possible injuries during theinflation phase.

WARNING

IMPORTANT The front and/or sideair bags may be activated if the car issubjected to heavy shocks or accidentsthat involve the underbody area, such asfor example violent bumps against steps,pavements or fixed obstacles on theground, falling into big holes or bumpyroads.

IMPORTANTS The triggering of airbags releases a small amount of powder.This powder is not harmful and does notindicate a start of fire; also the surfacesof the deployed bag and the car interiormay be covered with dusty residue: thismay irritate the skin and eyes. In theevent of exposure, wash with neutralsoap and water.

The air bag system has a validity of 14years as concerns the pyrotechnic chargeand 10 years as concerns the coil contact.Contact Alfa Romeo Authorized Services asthis date approaches.

IMPORTANT If an accident has trig-gered the air bag, Alfa Romeo AuthorizedServices must be contacted to have the de-vices activated replaced and to have thewhole system checked.

All operations involving checking, repair-ing and replacing components concerningthe Air bag must be carried out by AlfaRomeo Authorized Services.

If the car is to be demolished, Alfa RomeoAuthorized Services should be contacted be-forehand to have the system deactivated.

If the car changes ownership, the newowner must be informed of the instructionsfor use and of the above warnings and begiven this “Owner’s Manual”.

IMPORTANT The triggering of the pre-tensioners, front air bags and side bags isdecided by the electronic control unit in adifferentiated manner depending on thetype of crash. The failure to trigger one ormore of them does not necessarily indicatea system malfunction.

GENERAL WARNINGS

Never lean head, armsand elbows out of the

window.

WARNING

If the ¬ warning lightdoes not turn on when

turning the ignition key to MAR orif it stays on when travelling, thiscould indicate a failure in safety re-taining systems; under this condi-tion air bags or pretensioners couldnot trigger in the event of collisionor, in a restricted number of cases,they could trigger accidentally.Stop the car and contact a AlfaRomeo Authorized Services tohave the system checked.

WARNING

Do not cover back rest offront seats with trims or

covers there are not set for theuse of side bags.

Never travel with objectson your lap, in front of

your chest or with a pipe, pencil,etc. between your lips; injury mayresult in the event of the air bagbeing triggered.

WARNING

Always keep your handson the steering wheel rim

when driving, so that if the Air bagis triggered, it can inflate withoutmeeting any obstacles which couldcause serious harm to you. Do notdrive with the body bent for-wards, keep the seat back rest inthe erect position and lean yourback well against it.

WARNING

If the car has been stolenor an attempt to steal it

has been made, if it has been sub-jected to vandals or floods, havethe Air bag system checked by AlfaRomeo Authorized Services.

WARNING

Do not wash the seatback rest with pres-

surised water or steam (by handor at automatic seat washing sta-tions).

WARNING

When the ignition key isturned to the MAR posi-

tion, the warning light F (withpassenger’s front air bag deacti-vation switch in the ON position)turns on and flashes for few sec-onds to remind that passenger’sair bag will be deployed in a crash,after which it should go off.

WARNING

Please remember thatwith the ignition key at

MAR, the air bags can be triggeredalso on a stationary vehicle, if it isbumped by another moving vehi-cle. Therefore, even with the carstationary, never allow children onthe front seat. On the other hand,remember that with the car sta-tionary and ignition key at STOPno safety device (air bags or pre-tensioners) will be triggered in theevent of an impact; in this case thefailure to trigger safety devicesshould not be considered as a sys-tem failure.

WARNING

Please don’t apply stickersor other objects to the

steering wheel, to the air-bag coveron the passenger's side or on theside roof lining to the upholstery onthe roof side. Don’t place objects onthe dashboard passenger’s side(such as mobile phones) becausethey could tamper with the correctopening of the passenger’s air-bagand than cause serious injuries tothe vehicle occupants.

LIGHTS SWITCH ANDSTEERING WHEELLEVERS

The device and services controlled bythe levers on the steering wheel can onlybe activated when the ignition key is inthe MAR position (except the parkinglights which can always be switched on).

When the pointer on the knurled ring(A) is opposite the symbol O, the exter-nal lights are switched off.

The front air bag is trig-gered for shocks greater

in magnitude than the pretension-ers. For impacts between thesetwo thresholds, it is therefore nor-mal that only the pretensioners aretriggered.

WARNING

Do not hook rigid objectsto the coat hooks and to

the support handles.

WARNING

The air bag does not sub-stitute the seat belts, but

only increases their effectiveness.Moreover, since the front air bagsdo not come into operation in theevent of front impact at lowspeed, side collisions, bumps frombehind or overturning, in these cir-cumstances the occupants wouldonly be protected by the seat beltswhich must therefore always befastened.
