rolling for the 3rd session of

the Dental Research

Colloquium.

Our faculty has been conducting a series of research colloquium since last year with the

aim of promoting research collaborations among dental academics. The colloquiums

allow fellow academics to identify areas of common interest and pursue potential collabo

rative projects. New lecturers benefit most from the sharing of knowledge by

esteemed and senior lecturers. However, these new lecturers also provide a jolt of

fresh ideas and passion to the research community. The recent colloquium also

had the honour of inviting Professor Dr.Noor Hayaty bt Abu Kasim for a talk on "The

Do's and Don'ts of a Successful Application for Medical Ethics". She was joined

by a panel of equally experienced researchers to provide guidance

especially to up and coming researchers in the audience.

By: Dr. Maria Angela G. Gonzalez January 8 to 10, 2019, Armada Hotel

Lecturers gathered in Armada Hotel for a three-day workshop to prepare examination questions for Semester 2.

The workshop started with an introduction to the days' activities by the Deputy Dean for Undergraduate AP Dr. Zeti Adura Che Abdul Aziz. The Dean, Prof. Dato Dr. Zainal Ariff, gave encouraging words to the lecturers for the task at hand. Lecturers were assigned to different working groups to set integrated questions for all levels.

Question vetting was performed in the afternoon of each day. The session provided for interesting discussions and scenarios to improve the assessment of student knowledge and generic skills.

There were many lively discussions, interjected with a lot of humour and graciousness, on how to make the questions just and appropriate. We were one team with the one purpose of being at our best. In the end, we did accomplish our goals.

UP is the only government university in Philippines that provides Dentistry course. It is a six-year course consisting of two years of pre-dentistry and four years of dentistry. Their tuition fee is fully covered by the Government but students are required to buy their own instruments and some of the materials.

Their academic schedule goes by block, e.g.: five weeks in Removable Prosthodontics, five weeks in Restorative, etc. If students cannot finish the requirements, they will need to find time to fit in the incomplete procedure or wait for the next rotation which is the main reason why most of them are unable to graduate on time. Students only work in pairs during Year V Semester 2. Once they are in Year IV, they work individually.

p u EXCHANGE PROGRAM 2019

Students' clinics are separated according to discipline. Restorative clinic includes Operative, Paediatric and Fixed Partial Prosthodontics. Oral Medicine clinic includes Endodontics and Periodontics while Oral Surgery functions on its own. They have a prosthetic laboratory which can accommodate a maximum of 30 students. The only postgraduate program they provide is Orthodontics. We were exposed to the usage of semi adjustable articulator with facebow for complete denture construction. Each day, a year level was assigned to accompany us for lunch so that we could meet most of the students and have discussions with them. They made the effort to come despite having such busy schedules which included classes and clinics.

SUMMARY

People in the university are very friendly, helpful and it is undeniable that the warm hospitality they provided made us feel at home. It is indeed an enlightening visit as we had the opportunity to gain insight on the difference of the curriculum and system between UM and UP. Last but not least, this visit had had a very positive impact that created great camaraderie between dental students of UM and UP. We definitely look forward to having students from UPCD to come for exchange programs in UM.

MU-NUS INTERACTIVE GAMES 2019 By : Bryan How (Project Director) & Dr Noor Azlin Yahya (Project Advisor)

MU-NUS interactive game is a special event which was a product of the collaboration between students from UM and NUS. This event encompassed sports competitions and tours that facilitated interactions between the students of the two universities.

On Friday night, we departed at midnight, and arrived at Praisehaven Retreat Centre

early Saturday morning. When we reached the destination, we were warmly welcomed by Melvin and Kelly, the directors from NUS. After a merry round of greetings and introductions, they brought us to the famous Marina Barrage for an incredibly pleasant ice-breaking session and a beautiful photo shooting session.

After we had our fill of the exquisite scenery, we headed to Satay By The Bay, a luxurious restaurant that possessed quite an ethereal setting, to satisfy our hunger for lunch. Once we were happy and full, we went to explore the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest at Garden By The Bay. The Flower Dome was absolutely spectacular with their bright and colourful displays of flowers and plants while the Cloud Forest presented a mysterious world shrouded in mist. Additionally, the atmosphere was brightened further by the extravagant decorations in place prior the Chinese New Year Celebration. We were very lucky to enjoy such a marvellous experience at half the price as NUS had kindly subsidized the price of our tickets.

VivoCity HarbourFront Sport's day

Next on our list, we made our way to VivoCity to check out the trendiest mall in Singapore and spent our time there until dinner. We had the honour to be invited by Dr. Ng Chin Siau, the CEO of the Q & M Dental Group, to have dinner at Ban Heng Pavillion. It was indeed a very splendorous night as we enjoyed many great dishes, among which was Lou Hei, a traditional Chinese dish that symbolises prosperity, abundance and vigor. After we had finished our meal, we were invited once again by Dr. Ng Chin Siau to indulge in some durian at the Combat Durian resulting in a lively durian party. For granting us such a wonderful experience, we presented Dr. Ng Chin Siau as well as the whole of the Q & M Dental Group with a hamper as a token of our appreciation.

On our second day, we had our much awaited sports competitions. Rising early, we departed from the retreat centre at 7.15 am to NUS and speedily began our games. The students were swiftly distributed into mixed teams, each containing representatives from NUS and UM, thus allowing even more interactions between the students. We had numerous games lined up for the day such as basketball, mini football, captain ball, frisbee, and dodgeball as the final game.

TEMPOROMANDIBULAR

D I SO R D E RS :A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has always been a vague subject that imposes a lot of challenges on general dental practitioners and dental specialists regarding its diagnosis and management. University of Malaya's Dental Faculty, UM, thought of introducing this topic from a multidisciplinary perspective in concurrence with the recent establishment of the TMD combined clinic in the faculty (TMDCC). On January 14th and 15th 2019, Department of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics organized a two-day course and hands-on workshop focusing on TMD diagnosis through introducing a worldwide

known diagnostic tool (Diagnostic Criteria of Temporomandibular Disorders DC/TMD), as well as TMD Multidisciplinary Management. Speakers and facilitators were from the following departments; Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Clinical Sciences and Restorative Dentistry. The head of organizing committee was Dr Yasmin Kamaruldin.

THE -----------------SUBWAY -------->::-STORY----------------- ,

The story of the Subway brand began more than 50 years ago when Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist, changed the life of a college student with a few simple words, "Let's open a submarine sandwich shop." It was Peter Buck that gave college freshman Fred Deluca the idea to open a submarine sandwich shop to help pay his tuition. Peter provided an initial investment of $1000, and a business relationship was forged that would change the landscape of the fast food industry and the lives of thousands.

Tracing back the history of the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA), one will find that it was first established as the Malayan Dental Association in 1938 where Professor Dr Edgar Kingsley Tratman, who was the Head of Dental Department at King Edward VII Medical School at the time, became its First President.

This department later became Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, Singapore. Since then, students, staff members and alumni of University of Malaya, Dental Faculty, continue to play major roles in various events organised by MDA, especially when Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaysia was re-established in Kuala Lumpur in 1971.

This year, with the theme "A Lifetime of Oral Health for All" , marks the 26th year of the MDA Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition (SCATE) organised by MDA. The event was held on 18-20 January 2019 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

At this scientific convention, we have seen many alumni of ours being invited to take up many key roles as chairperson, moderators, speakers and experts panel. Some of them are diligently serving at Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, various academic institutions (UM, UKM, UiTM) while some are flourishing as private practitioners.

Well done everyone! We are immensely proud of your contributions!

Dr Nomah Taharim, the Principal Director of Dental Health, Ministry of Health Malaysia, gave the speech at the Opening Ceremony on the current state of dental services in the country.

Dr Ng Woan Tyng, The President of Malaysian Dental Association, moderated the forum on clinical practice guidelines, dental advertising, dental acts and medico-legal issues.

In addition, many of our alumni had commendably and splendidly volunteered to be committee members for various sub-committees during this three-day conference. It was truly a lively conference and a true meeting of like-minded individuals, which was well attended by more than 1000 dental surgeons. No doubt there are many unofficial reunions occurring during the lunch and tea breaks as the majority of the delegates were from University of Malaya. Being the oldest and most established dental school, it has certainly painted the landscape of dental services in the country.

Delegation from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Taiwan representing 5 delegates visited Univer-sity Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) on 24 Jan 2019. The delegation led by Professor Liu, Hui-Ping, was welcomed to UMMC by Assoc. Prof Dr. Azura Mansor, Deputy Director Clinical (Surgical) UMMC and the project team. The visit aimed to discuss collaboration opportunities and new partnership opportunities with UMMC and Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. During their visit, they divided into two groups and visited Faculty of Medicine University of Malaya, Emergency Medical Department, Cardiac Care Unit wad (CCU), and Faculty of Dentistry Univer-sity of Malaya. Chief Wu, Yu-Jen from Dentistry (Dental) Department, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung are accompanied by the Dean of Faculty of Dentistry, Prof Dato’ Dr. Zainal Ariff Abdul Rahman to visit our faculty. First they visited all the clinics followed by Biomaterial Research Laboratory (BRL), Craniofacial & Molecular Biology Research Laboratory (CMBRL) and Research & Diagnostic Lab (RDL). Finally, they visited Dental Research Management Unit (DRMU). Chief Wu, Yu-Jen was very happy to look at our facilities and services.

The story of the Subway brand began more than 50 years ago when Dr. Peter Buck, a nuclear physicist, changed the life of a college student with a few simple words, “Let’s open a submarine sandwich shop.” It was Peter Buck that gave college freshman Fred DeLuca the idea to open a sub-marine sandwich shop to help pay his tuition. Peter provided an initial investment of $1000, and a business relationship was forged that would change the landscape of the fast food industry and the lives of thousands.

In January 2018, Subway Malaysia opened the new outlet at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya. It was the first Subway Restaurant to be opened in a public local University and still remained as the only Subway in a public local higher learning institution.

Throughout that period, Subway@dental UM has been very generous in supporting various activities including UM 2018 Research Carni-val, Special Olympics Championship, Sports Day and many others.

It has received overwhelming response from their loyal customers, especially during the Offi-cial Outlet Launching Day and the World Sand-wich Day.

The restaurant has continuously introduced new menus and we look forward to the next addition of the new menu.
