With time, the computing needs of people have undergone many changes. Nowadays, people want

their devices to be flexible and mobile. Therefore, they use varied devices, such as Desktops,

Laptops, Tablets, and Smartphones, to perform day-to-day activities.

Different devices provide different user interfaces to perform day-to-day activities. These varied

interfaces across multiple devices make it difficult for the user to switch from one device to another.

As a result, it provides a varied user experience across these devices. Therefore, there was need to

provide one common interface for all such devices.

A common interface ensures same user experience across varied devices. Therefore, Windows 8

provides single interface for all kinds of computing devices.

The design of Windows 8 provides a support to varied working styles of different users.

In addition, it provides mobility, performance, and security to their business needs. Windows 8 is the

first edition of Windows to operate on both, ARM-based tablets and traditional x86 PCs.

The Windows 8 operating system comes in the following four editions:

Windows 8: This is the basic edition of Windows 8. This edition contains the features necessary for homeand small business use.

Windows 8 Pro: This edition supports the business and technical professional needs. It provides supportfor encryption, virtualization, computer management, and domain connectivity.

Windows 8 Enterprise: This edition supports all the features of Windows 8. In addition, it providesenterprise level security, mobility, and configuration of Windows 8 PC.

Windows RT: This edition is an ARM-based operating system, which is designed for mobile devices, suchas smartphones and tablets.

Microsoft has introduced more than 300 features in the Windows 8 Operating system. The Windows

8 design helps users perform their tasks efficiently and effectively. It provides a beautiful, fast, and

fluid interface for the users. Windows 8 offers the following features:

Fast and Fluid: This feature provides life to Windows apps by adding animations to them. The fast andfluid animations act an integral part of the Windows 8 user experience. When you log on to your PC, the

Apps in the Start screen animate in. In addition, when you launch a Windows app or zoom into the Startscreen, the experience is enriched with a smooth animation. Animations help a user identify the result of a

specific action. The word, Fast, in the term, Fast and Fluid, refers to a quick response to the user input. That means when the user interacts with an application, then the application should quickly respond to the

user action and should be ready to receive more user inputs. The term Fluid refers to the way in which an

application responds to the user interaction. It provides subtle transitional animations to the applications

with which the user is interacting.

Content before Chrome: Windows store apps are designed in a way that puts content on the center stage.Content is given prime focus and it occupies the entire screen space. Commands and tools that enable

interaction with the content are secondary and are displayed on demand. Therefore, the screen of a

Windows store app does not contain the following items:

A chrome or border to define the layout of the app Toolbars or menu bars that contain commands for enabling interaction with the app Navigation controls for enabling navigation within the app

Snap and Scale: This feature enables the sharing of screen by more than one program. This ensures thatthe user is able to view two programs simultaneously on a screen. If you have two running programs, and

you want to view them together, you need to perform the following steps:

    1. Move the mouse pointer to the top left corner of the screen. A small window isdisplayed.

    2. Slowly move the mouse pointer down. A small window is displayed that will showthe running applications.

    3. Select any one app that you want to snap, move the mouse pointer slightly towardsleft, and then release the app.

Feel connected and alive: This feature allows a user to stay connected. Windows 8 provides live tiles, such as News, Weather, and Messaging. These tiles allows a user to get latest news, weather forecast, and

    chat with their friends.

Roam to the Cloud: The feature allows a user to integrate his computing device with online services. Thisallows a user to connect the Windows 8 apps with his existing online account, such as Hotmail or Gmail.

For example, you can sync the Picture app with your Facebook account to display the images from

Facebook. Similarly, you can sync the Mail app to pull the mails from Gmail or Hotmail account. Inaddition to this, you can also store your system settings on the cloud. Therefore, if you log on to any other

Windows 8 PC, the same set of settings will be available to you on this PC.

The new Start Screen has revolutionized the way a user can access applications and information onWindows 8. It is a tile-based screen, which can be configured as per the users needs. A user can

    configure and decide:

The tiles that needs to be displayed. The location and size of the tiles. In addition, these tiles can display live information, such as weather forecast, news updates, and

    emails.

The Windows invocation and dismissal model is designed keeping in mind that regardless of what

app the user is using at any particular time, the experience should be the same. The invocation

model provides users the control of keyboard. With the help of an input controlling device, the user

indicates about the intention to input the instructions. This eliminates the possibility of application

deciding on behalf of the users for the inputs. This is also a useful feature as it eliminates the display

of keyboard unexpectedly and minimizes the screen consumption by keyboards.

Some of the touch interactions are:

Tap for Action:It is used for launching an application. Rotate:It is used to rotate entire screen or an object. Pinch and Stretch to Zoom:It is used for resizing the objects or items. Flick:It is used to perform some common tasks, such as moving a page down.

The Windows 8 platform consists of several components that together provide the environment to

develop Windows Store apps. Let us discuss these components one by one.

At the root of the Windows 8 platform are the core operating system services such as CPUscheduling, security, cryptography, threading, and file management.

On the top of Windows Core OS Services, there is another component called WinRT APIs. WinRT APIs

provide apps access to all the core operating system services. The WinRT APIs enable the app

developers to develop apps that can communicate with other apps and devices, include graphics and

video, and access printers and other devices.
