After a promising 2001 season, Brian Woods added to his vastsoccer knowledge with some things he saw during spring practice.The mix, he hopes, will deliver William Paterson to the top of theNew Jersey Athletic Conference.

The 11th year coach, whopossesses cross-countrysoccer connectionsthanks to his involvementwith New Jersey-basedMatch Fit Academy,infused his program withtalented newcomers fromas far away as Califor-nia and Virginia inaddition to prospectsfrom the Garden State.

“I saw them play intournaments around thecountry. All of thetravelling I did paid off,”said Woods, whose teamwent 8-9 (3-6 NJAC) in2001.

For this season, he alsoplans to switch the Pioneers’ plan of attack. The Pioneers will gowith a 5-3-2 formation after seeing how his returning playersembraced it while scrimmaging against Division I programsduring the spring.

“It worked out well,” Woods said. “We were getting peopleforward in the spring. In the 5-3-2, the midfield guys don’tnecessarily have a marking responsibility. And with our speed inthe midfield, it makes it tough for opponents to mark our guys.”

The midfield is the strength of the 2002 Pioneers, with two of thetop talents in the NJAC returning in senior Mike Guerdat (8 goals,

3 assists) andsophomore CarlosOrtiz (3 goals).Guerdat, a secondteam National SoccerCoaches Associationof America (NSCAA)All-Metro Regionperformer, tallied fourgame-winning goalsas a forward lastseason, but Woodsthinks his scoringskills are better suitedto playing the

midfield.Meanwhile Ortiz, a secondteam All-NJAC and thirdteam NSCAA All-MidAtlantic Region honoree,established himself as a fleet-footed playmaker during hisrookie season. Junior DaveSzeller is an experiencedhand with solid offensiveskills.

Three other newcomers alsofactor into the midfield mix:Sophomore Marvin Ochoa ofArlington, VA, and freshmenEvrim Can of Ridgefield andDaniel Walker, a PresidentialScholar who hails from

Walnut Creek, CA.

Playing in front of them at forward will be junior Jason Irizarryand sophomore David Lloyd. Irizarry could also play in themidfield and on defense, although he is also a clutch goal scorer.Lloyd, meanwhile, appears poised for a breakthrough season aftera strong spring. Sophomore Eric Kinckle, a speedy transfer fromMiddlesex County College, will push for playing time and couldenable Irizarry to shore upother areas on the pitch.

Defensively, the Pioneersreturn senior Jeff Mantzand sophomore RobertVoltz, both of whomenjoyed solid 2001campaigns with Voltzemerging late and Mantzevolving into a leader.Freshmen Mike Charles ofTeaneck and AndrewBarlow will challenge forstarting assignments. Lookfor Irizarry to also seesome time along thebackline as well.

At goalkeeper, junior ChrisAuriano and sophomoreMike Fedorczyk split timein 2001 and combined for a 1.29 goals against average and fourshutouts. However, the incumbents will face a challenge fromjunior Graeham Watts of El Sobrante, CA.

A coach with numerous connections in the local, regional andnational soccer communities, Brian Woods has demonstrated theability to coach and recruit during his 11 years at WilliamPaterson. Of course, none of this is surprising considering his vastbackground.

A standout at Belleville High School, he was a four-year starterand a four time All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection whileleading a Trenton State team ranked among the nation’s elite. Healso played football at his alma mater, but he made a name forhimself on the pitch. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree incorporate fitness in 1987 and was an assistant coach at TrentonState until 1991.

That’s when he came to William Paterson.

After enduring a tough first season in which the Pioneers went 1-18, he quickly righted things by recruiting solid student-athletes ashis squad became a competitive squad in the tough NJAC. Woodsalso helped start the Pioneers’ women’s soccer program, whichbegan as a club sport in 1993. He coached the men and womenfrom 1994-97 before deciding to concentrate solely on coachingthe men’s team. During his 10-year tenure, he has posted a 76-94-9 record, including three consecutive winning seasons from1995-97 that featured an invitation to the Eastern CollegiateAthletic Conference (ECAC) New York-New Jersey regionaltournament in 1995.

Besides his work with William Paterson, Woods is the head coachof the Match Fit Academy team and the president of the CollegeSoccer Association of New Jersey. In addition, he has coached theBoys and Girls Olympic Development Program and the NewJersey Lady Stallions, and was also an evaluator for the U.S.Region I Boys and Girls soccer teams.

A former Pioneer standout guarding the goal, Sherman returns tomentor the team’s four netminders. With his coaching,goalkeeping has remained one of the program’s strengths. Lastseason, the team allowed just 1.29 goals a game.

A native of Wall, Sherman works as the assistant sports andrecreation director at the Jewish Community Center in WestOrange. He graduated from William Paterson in 1997 with a B.S.in sociology/criminal justice.

Known as “Rocco,” Randazzo returns for a second tour of dutyafter serving as an undergraduate assistant in 1999. He playedfour years as a Pioneer at midfielder and back and was a captainduring the 1998 season.

Presently, Randazzo teaches at the Washington Academy inCedar Grove and resides in Cliffside Park. He graduated fromWilliam Paterson with a bachelor’s degree in exercise andmovement science in 2000.

PIONEER PROFILE: One of the program’s most athletic performers,Auriano is competing for a starting spot as goalkeeper ... Atransfer from Ocean County College last fall, where he started offas a goalkeeper and also played at back, he went 5-4 with twoshutouts and a 1.58 goals against average in 10 games. Heblanked Centenary (Sept. 22) and split a shutout againstHaverford (Oct. 3) ... Majoring in computer science.

PIONEER PROFILE: Irizarry is perhaps the Pioneers’ most versatileplayer. As a result, he could start at either forward, midfielder orback ... A transfer from Ocean County College, Irizarry made animmediate impact. In 17 games (8 starts), he finished with threegoals and two assists. This includes the game-winning tally againstThe College of New Jersey on Oct. 13 that earned him NewJersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honorson Oct. 15 ... Aided by an infusion of fresh talent, the Pioneers produced a solid2001 campaign that makes the 2002 campaign appear promis-ing. Highlights from last season include the following:

• For the second time in three seasons, William Paterson wonthe Howard Johnson Cup by beating Rhode Island College,2-0, and Washington (MD) College, 3-2. Junior forwardMike Guerdat scored four of the Pioneers’ five goals and wasnamed Most Valuable Player.

• A transfer from Division I Rider University, Guerdat led thePioneers in scoring with 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists),including four game-winning goals. All of them came in thefirst two-thirds of the season as the program got off to an 8-5start and was ranked seventh in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

• Freshman midfielder Carlos Ortiz provided the Pioneers withan elite playmaker. He scored 3 goals, including the game-winner against St. Joseph’s (NY) College on Oct. 10, andwas selected second team All-New Jersey Athletic Conferenceand third team All-Mid Atlantic Region.

• In addition to Ortiz’s honor, senior back Jeff Adams andsophomore back Gary Jordan were picked honorablemention All-NJAC. Adams earned NJAC notoriety in bothseasons at William Paterson; he was named to the secondteam in 2000.

• Sophomore midfielder/forward Jay Irizarry won the NJACOffensive Player of the Week award for Oct. 15 after scoringthe game-tying goal against St. Joseph’s (NY) on Oct. 10 andthe game-winner against The College of New Jersey.
