Electric Guitar SG Series BSM Vol.04

- Why and when did you start playing guitars?

It all started when I was 4 years old, playing classical guitar by my mom's influence. Later on, I took piano lessons, violin lesson, & acoustic guitar lessons but I was not quite sure if I really enjoyed it. And then, my goal for life had been chosen when I was in the 5th grade watching PBS’ annual re-broadcast of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival. We were at a friends' house and I will never forget how my friends were giving love and respect to Jimi Hendrix and I could not get along with the mood right then, but I for some reason knew, that's what I will do when I grow up, play electric guitar and look as powerful and crazy as Jimi Hendrix, someday. From that day on, I remember nothing else about my childhood besides playing football, being a school patrol & practice electric guitar playing methods on the classical guitar I had at the time. And, later on when I did finally get the electric guitar of my own by mowing lawns& cleaning the outside of neighborhood's homes, I just played guitar and bought cassette tapes, which was practically all I owned at the time. Haha~

- What is the difference between Yamaha guitars and others when played?

I am going to be honest. Playing a Yamaha guitar will not take you to outer space by turning it into other company’s guitar. But if that is not what you wanted in the first place like me, and wanted that extra edge of the Yamaha's unique ingredient that had started way back during the PEACE days of Santana back in the 60’s, if you ever dreamed of a Les Paul that has a different personality which sometimes screams louder, but can be so gentle it cuddles the rest of the sound from the band. Would being the only musical instrument manufacturer which makes practically every instrument in the world have anything to do with it? Hmm... I wonder if that's the case. And, it can look even scarier or prettier from time to time and make you feel as if you can do anything in front of any crowd with it with confidence, this is the guitar for you. And, believe me, I have played them all and I know what I want. It's definitely the Yamaha instruments and they know what they are doing!

- What is the best way to make better SG2000 sound?

I currently use the SG2000 guitars into the Cornford amps. Probably one of the best combinations you can ever get for a great guitar sound. I do use several effects but probably the most important effect of all would be the hands and the inspirations which give birth to new musical ideas. All in all, there is nothing impossible with the SG2000. Anything is possible, anything! I have been told by the Yamaha office in Korea that I will be getting my hands on the maiden guitar to be released in Korea, the SG3000 in a couple of months. I can’t wait to play tunes on that one as it would be like a dream come true to just hold and play what Santana used to play as I grew up to his music as he looked so cool playing so many great classic tunes with it. Who knows? I might cry!

- How do you make your ‘unique Kim Se - Hwang’ sound with SG2000 in stage performance?

My unique style could probably define in two ways. Within Korea, they say I play like American butter. Outside of Korea, I am the guitar ambassador and hold the signature K-pop sound in electric guitar. I guess that's why the major broadcast companies always get me to meet up with international bands during their visit to Korea and actually getting to meet, hear, and play with world renowned wonderful artists has always been a fundamental experience for me in many ways. From that experience, I try to play in many different styles but try to keep a fundamental root of tone within the complex versatile styles of music. This is important as people tend to forget the music they heard yesterday but I do also realize the special characteristics of guitar heroes from the past and now and they all keep a signature sound along with their playing. I can happily say, I have a signature sound and it does work in many different music styles. It’s kind hard to explain in words and can sound cheesy so, just come see me play!

- Please give a message to fan.

Thank you so much for this great opportunity and hope you found me and my environment in a new interest. If you would like to know more about me, you can always do a search on me by my Korean name in major search engines such as www.naver.com or www.daum.net or you can just visit our band's home page of www.nextfan.co.kr . This has been a pleasurable experience and hope to see you again very soon. Until then, CHEERS!

“Nothing change but evolves”

This is the Yamaha’s policy being continued until present from the

development of SG175 which its design was perfected and being kept for

more than 30 years.

After SG175 was designed in 1974, Yamaha has passed over its design to

SG2000 with the original technology of T-cross one piece neck and sustain

plate, completing not only design but also the sound.

And then, still the SG series made an evolution. Avalon Bindings which

reminds of the traditional SG175. CUSTOM logo printed on the truss-rod

100% Birch Shell Stage Custom has evolved again As with the introduction of Stage Custom in 1995 YAMAHA once again sets the standards of value and sound. By borrowing from our legendary Recording Custom drums, we are proud to introduce new 100% Birch Shell Stage Custom

Shell HardwareThe shell is a key factor in a drum’s ability to “rumble,” or resonate. Accordingly, the Stage Custom employs 100% birch - a classic in the realm of high-class drum kits. Moreover, with its six-ply structure the Stage Custom accurately conveys the vibrations produced at the impact surface, achieving performance that overwhelms anything in its class.

Interview from hardware designer

The center tilter of cymbal stand (CS755) and snare stand (SS740A) adjustment knob are the new features which supports drummer’s usability.

CS755 Center tilter enables firm setting by centering the position of the rod.

SS740A The new shaped adjustment knob makes possible to get fingers caught in knob and easy to secure the snare position in place.

As for the durability, clipping tilter of CS755 is a new factor. It folds the boom arm and it won’t damage the boom arm itself.

Yamaha’s hardware has advanced plating technology. New hardware of Stage Custom Birch also meets the same standard for quality of the 800/900 series. Compared with other brands, it doesn’t easily get rusty and revealed. So the customers can use Yamaha hardware in ease for long time.

New hardware offers convenience and durability

Please tell us some of the details behind the making of this new series of snare drums Okamoto (“O” below): This series came into being after someone voiced the opinion that we ought to make something that highlights the characteristics of the snare as a standalone instrument. Prior to that, most of our snares were positioned as another drum in a drum set. That’s why materials and colors of the snare shells were made to match to those of the bass drum and toms. For this series though, we ignored these factors and concentrated on making a snare with its own sound. Carrying an entire drum set into a studio or a performance venue is not an easy task, and in fact, the only thing that a lot of drummers bring on their own is their snare.

We hear that there are 3 new snares, each with its own distinct concept O: We made these drums with the idea that different kinds of music need different kinds of drum sounds. We really tried to get the most out of each drum, given currently available materials and technology.

So, looking at the “Vintage” Concept series first… O: This drum was designed around the sound you can hear in old pop and rock music up to the late seventies. Drums from that era have a trademark of “open” sound. In those early days we didn’t have the ability to make thick bodies, so the bodies themselves were weak. That’s why the edges were reinforced. For this new drum, we employed techniques used to making a thicker body, or putting it another way, we achieved to get the same reinforced construction using different techniques from those days. Consequently, this snare sounds like it has more backbone than a typical reinforced drum. Moreover, in addition to the thin body, we reduced the number of lug nuts used, to get an open sound from this 14 x 6" drum.

How about the “Sensitive” Concept series? O: This drum has a tone reminiscent of pop, jazz, and fusion. It has a sensitive yet bright sound that makes it a fun snare to play, with the right image for use as small drum with a brass band. It has a great response as well. In a lot of music – fusion for example – drummers will play small, detailed phrases, even between rimshots. When you’re playing like that, the excellent response of the “Sensitive” Concept series lets you put out a really nuanced, clear sound. We have put together a lineup of 14 x 5 1/2", 14 x 6 1/2", and 13 x 6 1/2" models. The 13 x 6 1/2" has an even more distinctive sound than we had hoped for. Its small bore makes the tone very consistent, and the deep body means that it has plenty of volume. You can tune the drum to a high pitch to get a really nice crisp sound. We added this one to the lineup when we realized that a lot of fusion artists like to use a 13 x 6 1/2" snare.

Lastly, the “Loud” Concept series… O: We made this series for hard rock and heavy metal. These snares are made of quality layers of thick oak and have a very heavy sound. They also have a great cutoff when you’re playing those flashy rim shots you hear so often in rock music. This series comes in 14 x 5 1/2" and 14 x 7" sizes.

The difference in sound within this lineup seems very clear O: That’s right. If you try each of the three types you should be able to tell the difference easily. Up until now, drum development mostly revolved around changing the materials. This came from the philosophy that changing the sound meant changing the type of wood used. This time, we altered our thinking and decided to change not just the materials but also the construction of the drum. For this, we did a lot of research on sound, and the results are reflected in the tension and the number of vent holes being different for each model. The “Loud” Concept series for example, has nine holes. It actually had only three when we were starting out, and with most snares only having one hole, going to three was quite a big step in itself. However, when we asked a professional drummer to try it out, we were told that it just wasn’t loud enough for the “Loud” series yet. That’s when we decided to go all out and put in 9 holes, which gave us a really intense sound. So we’re trying some quite bold things.

It sounds like you’ve achieved your original goal of being able to use different drums for different types of music? O: You could probably say we’ve exceeded our goals. Firstly, the 13 x 6 1/2" “Sensitive” Concept series has a better sound than we could have hoped for. Then there is the “Loud” Concept series – although we made it to be played with a lot of volume it actually has a subtle side to its sound that we weren’t expecting. With their nine holes, “Loud” series drums don’t have a lot of pneumatic elasticity, so they give a great snap. Fusion drummers also like that sound, which was a real surprise. One drummer has even made a signature model based on this series.

There are already professional drummers using these drums? O: That’s right. One drummer tried a “Vintage” Concept series prototype out and liked it so much he couldn’t wait for the production version. He took the prototype home. “Let me have it now!!” he said…! (laughs) It’s probably because the tension in the way we fit the drum head give these drums a sound that he hadn’t heard before. So for this series in particular we encourage people to try out different heads and playing styles at the music store.

With few steps from the table and I can jam with songs. DTX makes drum practice very easy and casual.

How do you utilize DTX in your room?

Usually I use Laptop for my work, so wherever I sit it

will be a workroom. When I am working at the dining

table, I receive songs which I will play in next session.

So I listen to the songs then walk aside to DTX and

connect it with PC. Then I can virtually jam with songs,

this is very convenient for me. I can even play in

midnight, without using much stamina. This is best

system to grasp the structures and patterns of song.

So you think DTX is good for practice.

The rebound of pad is good so its suits for practice.

Recently some kids start playing drums with DTX so

they can hear the good drum sound from DTX

module. When you play with the acoustic kit, the play

often becomes strong and it doesn’t always be the

best sound. On the other hand, you can play DTX in a

relaxed condition, which makes a good sounding.

Please give some advice to drummers.

I think learning the basic technique is important.

Practicing rudiments will make you a good drummer.

Like piano always begin with Bier, Rudiments have a

very long history so you must try it. It’s very

profound skill.

How do you utilize DTX in your room?

So you think DTX is good for practice.

- Why or how did you start playing Synthesizer?

When I was 5 years old my parents noticed my music skills and decided to develop them. Of course that time I couldn’t decide for myself. So, I was sent to music school because of several reasons: I had very long fingers. We had a piano at home. Parents thought that piano was more difficult than guitar or drums. At the age of 15. I got my first synthesizer.

- Please describe the sounds of MOTIF XS?

Searching for the ideal sound I was changing the equipment like gloves, but MOTIF attracted my attention!

• Big, bright, comfortable and informative display • A lot of faders, buttons, controls

When I switched to the MOTIF I fell in love with its sound. I was impressed by the wide sound range, huge number of sounds (rock, classic, pop, R&B dance etc). It’s hard to explain, just try this perfect machine in any shop. No matter what you play, MOTIF is a treasure to any musician.

- Who do you recommend MOTIF XS to?

I recommend it to all the lovers of beauty.

- When choosing instruments, what is the most important point?

When I chose the instrument I follow several rules: 1) good sound, 2) comfortable keys, 3) convenient inside interface system. 4) convenient in LIVE shows.

- How do you create your song?

Well, there are two stages: Creative and Mechanical. Creative part is always different. Sometimes the melody first develops to some structure…

Sometimes melody comes later based on a harmony basement. It’s very important to transfer these thoughts and ideas by realizing them into notes. Right here I continue the mechanical part where MOTIF is a perfect helper. MOTIF is easy, even a school guy will understand how to record and redact the music information of MIDI system. I use the internal sequencer and synchronize it with Cubase if necessary.

- What kind of equipments do you use for the music production in studio?

I’m satisfied with MOTIF. The new “Epidemia” album will be with MOTIF sounds. The sound becomes brighter, more colorful, and wider.

- Tell us about your latest activity and future schedule.

Well for the 2008 “Epidemia” played more than 60 concerts. All the concerts were sold out. Fans liked the new sound produced by Yamaha equipment.

- Please give advice to young musicians

Be patient! Do what you really love following your aim and the success will come! Good luck!

- Could you tell us your impression of each countries which you went around in the seminar tour?

My first impression of visiting Asian countries is, they are always very interested, and very enthusiastic, more than European or other countries. Somehow, in

Asia they seem to appreciate the music and the efforts from Yamaha, to visit and explain about the gear.

- In what point do you care when you hold a clinic?

I always picture myself in the

audience, if I am preparing a clinic. I am an end user myself, so I expect a lot of practical examples in a clinic. This is why I always prepare live and realtime examples. If you tell people something, only 50% will remember, but if you show it too, 100% will remember! Another thing I try is, to keep a good atmosphere, with a lot of music and entertainment. Music is all about fun, and not about technical specifications. So, for me, inspiration comes before information.

- Please tell us your favorite features of both MOTIF XS, and MM6/8.

In MOTIF XS I just love the overall sound quality, and the fact that all these sounds are actually immediately useful, without tweaking or editing. It is clear that the sounds have been programmed by

people who are very close to synth-world and to players. Also, the flexibility and the amazing arpeggio patterns make this workstation to the best on the market now. MM6 I really like because it is totally incredible what you get in an entry level synthesizer! Not only a cool selection of useful MOTIF-sounds including megavoices, but a lot of great contemporary drumpatterns and

accompaniment. Besides, it is very light so it is not only convenient for people who

start music production at home, but also for the gigging musician

who need an extra keyboard on stage.

- How do you think about New Steinberg Hardwares (MR816 and CC121)?

It took me about 2 seconds to get used to the CC121! It is totally intuitive, it works rightaway and after I worked with it, I could not imagine myself working with Cubase without this controller anymore. It makes the workflow so much faster and easier. The MR816

is already great as an 8 channel mic pre-amp, but they even included a great channel strip and reverb processor, taking the pressure of your computer cpu but also enriching your plugin collection.

- Who would you like to recommend these products?

I see more than one target group: first of all, the musician with only a computer, can buy one of these instruments or audio interfaces and get Cubase AI for free in the box. This means, they can start

composing, programming and recording straightaway without need for extra soft-or hardware. But also live musicians or professional composers or studio producers will benefit by using all these products. It is all about the music and all these hardware will help you get there.

- Could you briefly explain us about your process of making a song?

It depends for who I am writing. For example, a singer comes to me with a vocal line, so I try to find the right chords under the melody. Then, I program a very simple MIDI-track to get to the right key, tempo, song

structure. If all these things are correct, I invite the studio

musicians and let them play the song. This is the step where pre-production becomes production! After all the musician’s parts are

recorded, I start doing all the lead vocal recordings and backing

vocals, ending with the mix of the whole.

- What is the most important thing in making music?

When I write or produce music for other people, I have to be en extension of their dreams. Make sure they get to a higher level, without losing their identity. For me, making music is a way of life, a lot of fun and hard work.

- You were playing not only keyboard but also bass guitar. What kind of practice do you carry out for these instruments?

It is all about practicing a lot!! My opinion is, that technical skills give you the freedom to play what you really want. Technical skill is not something that you should show off like a circus artist, but use to make the music you like to make. That is why I still practice everyday, and learn from other musicians every day.

- Please give an advice to amateur musicians and creators.

The most important advice I can give you, is to keep on practicing, listen to a lot of records, try to play along with the songs, visit a lot of concerts and always keep asking yourself a lot of questions: why does he do it that way, why does it sound the way it sounds, which chords does he use, etc. Finally, you will become a musician with your own unique style and technique.

Synthesizer MOTIF XS Series BSM Vol.04

The MOTIF was succeeded by the MOTIF ES which has doubled the enormous power of the MOTIF. Now it’s time to double the MOTIF ES — time for the MOTIF XS.

The 128 voices of the XS’s AWM2 Tone Generator are based on 2.670 Waveforms in the large 355 MB Wave-ROM which can be expanded by up to 1 GB of Sample-RAM for further samples. Each Voice can consist of up to eight Elements, which can be dynamically activated in the “Expanded Articulation” mode (“XA-Mode”) to simulate different playing styles of acoustic instruments in a very realistic way. Use Performances to arrange up to four Voices in layers and splits over the keyboard. Thanks to its intelligent chord recognition the 4-part Arpeggiator and its 6,000 Phrases supplies the perfect accompaniment. With one press on the Record button you can record directly from the Performance mode into the sequencer — perfect to sketch your ideas. The Master-Mode divides the keyboard in up to eight zones and makes the MOTIF XS a perfect Master Keyboard. Control the XS in real time with Ribbon Controller, Modulation and Pitch Bend wheel, 2 buttons, 8 Knobs and 8 Faders. This all supports the Remote Control functions to control DAW software on your computer.

Like all MOTIFs the MOTIF XS comes in three models which only difference is the size and type of the keyboard. While the MOTIF XS6 and XS7 are equipped with a FSX keyboard with 61 (XS6) respective 76 (XS7) keys, the XS8 comes with a 88 key Balanced Hammer Effect Keyboard.

SixologySixology is a result of putting 6 very different individuals together to form a band that is musically unique in terms of sound and style. Each member of Sixology has influences that range from blues to goth to classical to rock n roll. The band’s triple-lead vocal combination coupled with superb instrumentation on the keyboards and harmonized guitar solos separates the 6 from other rock groups. Its drum rhythms are also unconventional and even unpredictable at times, giving the group an extra touch of brilliance. The outcome is Sixology - a study of what 6 talented musicians can produce and achieve as one.

UnstableSince 2004, we have been together as a band. Music is our lives. We write songs, and we perform at many schools and cafes. At times, we have not enough money to play music and live, so we called our group “Unstable” (which describes our lives.) Heavy metal rock is our favorite kind of music to perform. Many people in Taiwan feel this style is too noisy, but because of those who like this style, we don’t shirink back. We hope that we can encourage others to enjoy heavy metal as much as we do. We want to give excitement to the music market in Taiwan. It’s another dream, that we hope everyone in Taiwan can experience other music styles.
