Talent Kidz, it's the story of kids who love sports, but not only. Through their personal journeys, they approached their sport as a hobby, as a necessity or as a source of fulfillment, with a common feeling: passion.

You will find in this magazine portraits and interviews of these children and coaches. There will also be a news item as well as discoveries with an unknown sport and many other things ...

Talent Kidz, it is therefore the look at the exceptional qualities of these future regional, national or world champions and on the very values of sport: mutual aid, solidarity effort, the happiness of victory, the drunkenness of scores and records, and pleasure, above all pleasure.

Talent Kidz makes it a point of honor to encourage and support all those talented young anonymous people who mark the sport every day.

We will go today, like tomorrow on the deserted beaches of Indonesia, on the wastelands of Rio favelas, in a dilapidated dojo of French suburbs and to the dirt tracks of Kenya.

We are witnesses of their gift, of the raw talent of these kidz and we have the sincere ambition to bring them to light.

Why did you start surfing?”My mother and my father have always surfed, they introduced me to the surf world. At the age of 3 I would always be sitting on a surf board, at the age of 5 my parents gave me the first surf lesson of my life in the bay near my house, but I surfed my first wave at Smiths Beach, it’s also there where I surfed my first barrel.“ So it’s actually your parents who taught you?”Yes, but not only, Claire Bevolaqua also played a big part in it, she is a good friend and she has helped me a lot, she has gone professional now (35 years old, she placed her self 3rd at SATA Azores Pro at Sao Miguel)! I grew up surfing with her.“What do you love about surfing? ”What I feel while riding the wave! Especially while surfing barrels, when the water is closing up on you. The faster the wave the better. “Slabs” are my favourite, it’s when the wave us huge but closes really fast. I love the feeling of being light, almost like you were levitating on water and then taking the wave… My favourite tricks are the Air Reverse, it’s when you use the wave to jump and get air time.“I imagine that you have surfed a bit everywhere in the world?”Mainly in Australia and Indonesia. When I’m at home I usually go surf at Margaret River, Yallingup, Smiths Reef, Shallows, Rabbits and some other secret spots. When I’m in the North, I usaly surf in Jakes a Kalbarri and Gnarloo, it’s an amazing place. When I’m in Bali I usually go to Canggu, Uluwatu or Padang Padang depending on the season. I had the chance to go to Mentawi many times thanks to Mentawi surf charters and I have also surfed in Sumbawa, Sumatra and Lakey Peak.” And in what other place would you like to surf?“My dream is to go surf in Hawaii, Tahiti or Desert point in Lombok, we’re going there this year, I’m so excited!”You have participated in many competitions, which was your favourite?“My favourite competition was the Taj Burrows Grom is my favourite challenge. I love it so much because Taj ( ex pro surfer who retired 2 years ago) organises it and

he also lives here. He’s an incredible surfer, I sow him “destroy” North Point and Padang Padang. I also love John Florence (World champion in 2016 and 2017), I surfed with him a little bit when he came over this year. I love watching him surf. Jack Robinson (World qualifying series surfer) is also a legend, they’re my inspiration. ”

You’re taking their same rout, you already have competed in a few competitions and I’ve herd you have done quite well?“Yes it’s true, but I still have to work a lot before getting to their level. My 2 last competitions were Taj Small Fries and Uluwatu Open Challenge. I got 2nd place and I was so excited because I had a surf accident 3 days prior to that and I had 13 stiches on my torso. I fell on my boards fins and cut my self. This factor made me even more excited for the result. Anyways I still have a long way to go if I want to become someone.”

How do you cope with stress? “Not very well (laughs). I have a hard time staying seated without moving and just looking, but I’m getting better, I get help from Jade from Triton active, she helps me managing my stress.”

Do you like other sports as well? “Yes, I love to dive, play rugby as well skateboarding.”

But surfing has a special place in you heart? “Yes absloutly! Surf sessions are always different. Even if you surf the same waves again and again, the wind, the brake or the currents, they always change. I love how the ocean makes me feel. There is more adrenalin than in other sports and the sensation of liberty is greater in my opinion!”

If you had to describe surfing in 3 words, what would they be.“It’s my life!”

This month we have met a young Australian who lived his life in-between the beaches of the Bukit peninsula and the south-east coast of Australia. Ned Hart, 12 years old, future professional surfer who has accepted to answer our questions for this months TALENT KIDZ.

GAME

On the 2nd of September the 18th edition of the Asian games finished.

Organised by Indonesia between Jakarta and Palembang, the country did

well positioningits self 4th on the leader board. Their objective wasn’t just

simply reached; they did better than what they wanted to achieve.

INDONESIAFINISHED 4TH

After 15 days of competition Indonesia were just one place off the podium, just behind the great Asian sport nations, which were China (#1st), Japan (#2nd) and South Korea (3rd).

98 medals were won by Indonesia, with 31 gold, 24 silver medals and 43 bronze medals, while the objective was to get 15 medals.

Indonesia participated in 40 different sport, 4 more than the 17th edition, which was held in Incheon, in South Korea. (cf-crosswords)

Amongst these 40 sports 1 is from Indonesia! It’s an Indonesian martial art called Pencak Silat! This sport on its own had 16 competitions and 14 medals were won by Indonesia as well as one bronze medal.

The Pencak Silat is a mix of traditional dances combined to self defence techniques. This 2 aspects are taking into consideration during this competition.

The spiritual dimension is immense. On the island of Java, the practice of this sport would help obtain supernatural defence powers.

During competitions, a jury of 5 judges giving a grade for every competitor, who fight in 3 rounds. A score of 5-0 means that everyone in the jury has voted for the same fighter. That is the result that the Indonesian fighter Komang Adi Putra against David No-Ano Ximenes from Timor-Leste.

Indonesia is trying to get this sport recognised by UNESCO as cultural world treasure of the country and they hope that in 2020 the sport will take part in the Japan Olympic games. This seems to be very hard as you need a minimum of 80 members of the International Olympique Comity to vote for it.

GABRIEL, 6 years old, competitive and reckless;

JULES, 7 years old, hard working and who tries hard!

Gabriel looks like an angel, a funny kid who like to joke around, he has a scar on his eyebrow, he got that while skateboarding, but that’s a risk when practicing this sport. Another skaters skate hit him in the face, fortunately it was nothing to serious.

As soon as he can he goes to Amplitude, which is Jl. Semmer skate park. He is equipped like a pro; knee pads, helmet, gloves, elbow pads, flat shoos and 5 different skateboards.

He was meant for this sport, his great grandfather was a rally pilot and his dad owns a bike shop in Belleville, therefore it is not surprising that this young boy could skate even before he could walk.

After landing a kick-flip, Gabi introduces me to his friend Jules. Jules is 1 year older but he has the same passion as Gabi, they participated at the Pro Jam competition in Bali. They positioned them selves 4th and 3rd in their category.

Jules, unlike Gabi, is a self-learner, he is a boy who tries hard and never gives up. It’s been a year now that he has been going to the skate park every day, to practice his tricks. He likes being autonomous and independent, he learns quickly and nothing scares him. “When I see someone do a trick I ask him how he does it and then try until

I succeed, Gabi is just naturally talented, I have to work much harder than him if I

want to reach the same result.”

When I ask them what they would like to do when they grow up, the answer is unanimous. “We want to become pro skateboarders!”

Gabi’s best skill is speed. What he likes doing is getting in the bowl with the objective of following a line and to follow it without, changing direction, changing rhythm and most of all without falling!

Jules is more into tricks, he starts by telling me the ones he can land and then tells me about the ones he is working on.

“There’s Rock To Fakie, getting to the top of the ramp without looking back. Disaster is a tad more technical since you have to you have to do a 180° before stopping the board on top of the ramp. There’s also Rock n’ Roll…”

Right now his working on landing the front side 50/50 and some different types of Ollie. He started 1 year ago but already has full control on the skate basics, he has a bright future ahead.

Pencak Silat is certainly the martial art with the most troubled history, this is due to the fact that it doesn’t originate from one place, but from what we call “the Milesian world” which is formed by: Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapour. There are different types of silat (combat). The thing that interests is silat (different body movements). There is no precise historical knowledge, but Java’s literature and heritage prove that pencak silat is an integral part of the culture. It was a national weapon of defence of the royalty as well as combat used during wars. It was taught to all the kids in the kingdom, the goal was to create a brave, disciplined and loyal commu-nity. The term Pencak Silat has officially been created in 1948.

What is it ?Pencak Silat is a defensive martial art which originates from Malaysia. Women and kids can practice this discipline, because it doesn’t depend on physical strength, but more on intelligence and audacity. The spiritual dimension is a key part of this martial art. The technical fan proposed by the discipline is of high effectiveness as it permits the fighter to attack with various body techniques, to weaken the adversary before ending him with a projection, and immobilisation or a lock. This martial art. The different techniques al aim to hit sensible zones of the body like the nerves in the articulations. The martial art also includes weapons.

Weapons used in Pencak SilatHere are 3 of them:

• The stick: They exist in all sizes and the short ones are called batang or galah.

• The kriss: It originates from Java, it’s a sort of dagger which blade has ripple. It has some mystical origins as it is composed of a minimum of 2 alloys and the legend says that it also has some meteorites…

• The recong: It’s an Indonesia knife which has an L shaped handle.

NECESSARY QUALITIES:

Indonesia has placed its self 1st in this discipline winning the most medals at the Asian games,

we have therefore decided to better understand

this complex sport.

What are the different stages to become a Judoka?“The level is determined by the colour of your belt. There are a total of

12 belts, the white one, followed by the yellow, yellow/orange, orange,

orange/green, green, blue, brown and the black belt. After the black belt

you get a Dan. You have to be Dan 6 to reach the red and white belt and

after reaching the 9th Dan a red belt is awarded. That is the highest rank

you can achieve.”

Do you have to start at a young age to be good? “You can start practicing the sport between 4 and 6 years old, the earlier you

start a sport the higher you will achieve, it is the same thing for Judo. In Judo

it is important to start at a young age since it has a moral code which is

essential to respect to go up the ranks.”

What are the values of Judo? “The first is politeness, the greeting is extremely important in combat sports and

Judo falls in that category. Respecting your opponent, honour, modesty,

self control, but being wise is the hardest thing to achieve.”

How would you define Judo? “In my opinion, Judo is a hard sport, due to the perfection of movement,

the attacking and the moves, but it’s also soft, since it is a defence combat.

The sport uses the strength of the adversary to execute it perfectly. The

movements are firm, but not violent, you have to use your entire body. It’s

a very complete sport.”

And what kind of equipment do you need?“The outfit is composed of a Judogi, which is a blouse made of Sashiko which

is what we use to make a Kimono and the trousers. The outfit is generally

white, but blue is used during competitions and the belt, which colour vary

depending on the level.”

Where can we join you for a lesson?“You can find me 4 times a week at the Lilabuana Dojo in Denpasar, Monday,

Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.”
