The situation at Vuwani can return to normality soon, af-ter four Ministers met with Khosikhulu Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, senior traditional leaders from the affected area and different structures at the King’s kraal in Dzanani on Tuesday. As negotiations had reportedly gone well, the mat-ter of bail for the accused in the public violence cases might be the stumbling block. (See a separate report on the case on page 2).

The four Ministers who met

with the King are Michael Ma-sutha (justice and constitution-al development), Nathi Nhleko (police), David Mahlobo (state security) and Des van Rooyen (co-operative governance).

Life has come to a standstill in Vuwani, with services as well as schooling and business operations remaining suspended in Vuwani and surrounding villages.

The month-long protest action has seen schooling suspended because residents do not want their areas to be included into a new municipality in the Vhembe region.

Community members are pro-

testing against their inclusion into the new Malamulele council instead of the Makhado Munic-ipality.

Residents want the municipal demarcation board to reverse the decision to remove them from the Makhado Municipality and include them in a new munici-pality. At least 24 schools have been torched or vandalised by the protesters and pupils are roaming in the streets of the different vil-lages. Businesses and government offi ces are still shut down, with the police continuing to maintain a strong presence in the area.

Teachers and pupils afraid of intimidation

Well-known taxi boss buried

Three in court for murder

‘Inter-ministerial team make significant progress’

Pupils around some villages in Vuwani, Mashau and sur-rounding areas could be seen in the streets in their uniforms, returning to school earlier this week, but they had to go back home as they found their schools locked and empty.

According to many observers, teachers and pupils in Vuwani and surrounding villages are still afraid to return to school because of possible intimidation. Various stakeholders are appealing to par-ents to send their children back to school as no schooling has taken place in the area for a month.

As can be expected in the wake of violent protests in the area, during which a large number of schools were torched or van-dalised, learning and teaching resumed slowly. It was also re-ported that a classroom at Mawe-la Primary in Masakona area at Serani village was destroyed last

Sunday night.An inter-ministerial team en-

gaged with community structures and traditional leaders during the past week with the aim of restor-ing normality to the area.

Classes were scheduled to re-sume on 16 May, but this has not been the case in all the affected schools as mobile classrooms were still being delivered, with-out furniture. Some pupils spent the day cleaning the damaged classrooms and then returned home. Chief Livhuwani Matsila said that if teachers claimed they had been intimidated, why that had not been the case with pu-pils. “Pupils have been going to schools, only to find no teachers. I think at some stage the depart-ment will have to take action against those teachers, because the area is slowly getting back to normal. Ordinary members of the public have made it clear that

they will guard all the schools against the organised syndicates that have been burning schools,” he said.

The education department’s spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Ras-ila, said the department had been tipped off about threats that had triggered fear among pupils and teachers. He said that teachers from different schools reported for duty to their respective circuit offices. He confirmed that some of the pupils and teachers were still not reporting to schools.

Rasila said some pupils who wanted to go to school were re-turning home as the gates at some schools in the area were still locked. He said that they expect-ed the pupils and teachers to re-turn to school soon. Some pupils still stayed at home, while others around the country are busy with mid-year examinations.

There is still no schooling around the Mashau area.

Members of the community, taxi owners and relatives converged at the family home of Mr Eddy Siphei (53) at Madombidzha last Sunday to pay their last respects to the well-known taxi owner.

He was buried at the Madombidzha cemetery on Sunday. He fell down and died last Monday, when he was in a queue to buy food in Louis Trichardt. The cause of his death is still not known. He was a member of the Dzanani Two Taxi Association that operates in the Sinthumule and Kutama areas.

Family spokes-person Mr Victor M u t h u p h o d e -scribed the death as a big loss to the family. “He was one of a kind, a unique person who was always ready to help everyone who needed help.” Muthupho said the deceased had played a uniting role in the family and they all looked at him as exempla-ry. “Let us all be

calm and not tarnish the good name Siphei had made for himself.”

The chairperson for the Dzanani Taxi Association, Mr David Mat-shavha, said the organisation had lost a leader that would not be easy to replace. “He was such a good man and his inputs always made an impact in the organisation. He will be missed,” he said.

At the time of his death, he headed the disciplinary hearing portfolio committee of the taxi association. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Three men briefly appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, following the murder of Mr Nthambeleni Daniel Mudau (55). Mudau’s blood-soaked body was discovered at the gate of a well-nown tavern at Tsianda village in the Mashamba area on 15 May this year.

According to the spokesperson of the Levubu Police, W/O Solly Mukhola, the suspects are residents of Tsianda. They were arrested last Friday.

Nthabeleni Sikhorobo (35), Mulalo Rammese (22) and Colbert Rammese (31) were not asked to plead. The case was postponed to 8 June. They will stay in custody until their next court date. Mukhola revealed that the arrest was the result of the sound relationship between the police and the local residents.

He further stated that the police started to receive positive informa-tion from concerned residents from

the day of murder. Mudau’s murder is a matter of great concern to the local residents. That became evident when several meetings were held by residents at the local tribal office premises.

One of the meetings held on Sun-day, 15 May, was characterized by emotional utterances, with residents threatening to take the law into their own hands.

At the meeting residents pointed out that they had lost trust in the police services. They cited an inci-dent where local resident Matimba Emmanuel Tshikalange, who was arrested for murder towards the end of last year, escaped from police custody in January.

A local traditional leader, Thovhele Vho-Pfuluwani Netsianda, addressed the residents during the meeting. He appealed to them to be calm and furnish the police with the informa-tion that would lead to the arrest of Mudau’s killers.

Bail for the Vuwani public violence accused? All the accused arrested for public violence at Vuwani will hopefully know today (Friday) if they will be released on bail.

Since the arrests and subsequent appearance at Malamulele and Thohoyandou of those suspected of being behind the violence in Vuwani and parts of Thulamela, which has put life in the areas on hold, only the names of councillor Gideon Tshavhuyo and educator Mr Edzisani Muthathe have been mentioned.

Those appearing at Malamulele are: Rothe Ratshifheti (21), Frank Muthathe (50), Simon Ravele (28), Lyborn Malaudzi (38), Itani Mahosi (26), Bushy Fhedzisani (35), Dakalo Mahosi (19), Gideon Tshavhuyo (38), Prince Mashamba (29), Nich-olas Hlungwani (27), Ndwamato Mugwena (26), Rodney Davhana (21), Hulisani Mushavhela (19), Re-member Mavhandu (23), Tiyiselani Hlungwani (19), Kenneth Radzilani (20), Takalani Munyai (19) and

Owen Ndou (52).Those appearing in Thohoyandou

are: Tshiredo Mmboniseni (27), Mphatheleni Mabannda (26), Ten-dani Rambuda (32), Maluta Innocent Mabannda (42).

Appearing again in Thohoyandou in a seperate case are Takalani Des-mond Mamugudubi (51), Tshiredo Mmboniseni (27), Frank Chauke (33), Tendani Rambuda (32), Mpha-theleni Mabannda (26), Ephraim Baloyi (29) and Maluta Innocent Mabannda 42.

Meanwhile, community struc-tures pointed out during a meeting on Tuesday with ministers at King Toni Mphephu’s guest house that the release of residents would fconstitute good grounds for further consulta-tions in an effort to normalize the situation in the area.

There is still no life in Vuwani, with businesses still closed and only a few pupils reporting at their respective schools. Makhado councillor Gideon Tshavhuyu.

From page 1After the meeting, Justice Minister Mi-

chael Masutha said an increasing number of pupils, parents and teachers wanted to resume with teaching in the area. Mr Mahlobo added that the inter-ministerial team on Vuwani had made significant progress in ensuring that normality was

slowly being restored in the area. Mahlobo says there were still other areas of concern that needed to be looked at. “We think significant progress has been made and there is still some work that needs to be done, but there are other areas where we are still struggling.” He also applauded the commitment shown by traditional leaders

that the time that pupils had lost should be regained.

Some community structures in Vuwani say the shutdown of services will only be suspended if the 18 arrested residents are released on bail.

One of the residents, who wants to remain anonymous, said they had met

with the King and were pleading with the police to stop harassing them.

“What was agreed upon was that we re-quested the King to help the negotiations. There are some of conditions that we have submit-ted to him to engage with the office of the ministers involved. We will not suspend the shutdown if there are people who are still in custody and will be de-nied bail. Secondly, we want to see the police stop harassing people, especially in the Vye-boom area, because that is where they are using extensive force.”

Pupils from some villages in the Vuwani area are receiving edu-cational lessons from the Munna Ndi Nnyi organisation, so that they can continue with their syl-labi, even as incidents of unrest continue in their area.

A team of university-level stu-dents is responsible for teaching and giving lessons to more than 180 pupils. The fact is, said the director of Munna Ndi Nnyi, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, that the number of present pupils increases every day by more than 20 new learners.

Mufunwaini said that the organ-isation appealed to the government to strike a balance when they handled the Vuwani issues. “They must think about these youths who will suffer more if schools are not opened in their area,” he said. “As Munna Ndi Nnyi, we are by no means interfering with what the Vuwani residents are doing or fighting for as everyone of us has got his/her own rights. Here, now, we are speaking about the future of these poor children.”

Pupils complain that they come from families where their parents are unemployed and that travelling to and from Lwamondo is a big challenge. “My mother borrows money from other people for my transport fares,” said a 16-year-old pupil. “I feel sorry for my mother, because I know it is going to be difficult for her to pay that money back. She is unemployed.”

Another 18-year-old Grade 12

pupil from Vuwani residential area said that the media were continuing to spread wrong information. “They say our schools have re-opened, and that's pure lies,” he said. “Tell us now, what do we want here in Lwa-mondo if our schools are open?”

He indicated that there were no schools that had been burnt in his area, but teachers were afraid to resume classes. “They want their safety to be guaranteed before they step into the classroom and do their jobs,” he said. “But if our elders still intimidate our teachers, then our teachers will not teach and this thing is affecting us.”

Alicia Chabalala (18) said that she was relieved that there were good organisations such as Munna Ndi Nnyi who were dedicated to building the lives of the youth. “We are starting to write trial exams on Friday (today),” she said. “And, had we not been receiving lessons here, what were we going to write?”

One of the voluntary facilitators, who is also a part-time Unisa stu-dent, Ngelekanyo Themba (22), said that he was particularly moved by the children's plight and decided to be part of volunteers offering free teaching services to affected pupils.

“I feel for these children because every child has a right to educa-tion,” he said. “Without education, these children will never survive in this world. We don't want to be a nation that breeds a bunch of criminals because we have failed to educate the youth.”

Alleged crime kingpin survives mob’s revengeThe demon of mob justice raised its ugly head in Vhembe again. A man who allegedly unleashed ter-ror wherever he went around the village of Hamutsha-Khwekhwe outside Louis Trichardt, received bush justice last week when an-gry community members caught up with him after a long time on the run.

The man, only known as Tinties, has been on the run since one of his accomplices was caught red-handed at Khwekhwe and confessed to the community that he had been sent by the alleged crime boss.

The young man was allegedly badly assaulted and then pointed out hide-outs where more stolen goods were recovered.

The alleged criminal boss went into hiding after that. The man and his gang are suspected to be behind the spate of robberies, thefts, rapes and attacks on residents, among others.

Angry community members hunt-ed him last weekend and caught up with him and used an assortment of weapons to beat him. After a fierce beating, the alleged crime boss soiled himself and was left for dead in a pool of blood. Fortunately for him, he was rescued when sympa-thetic residents called an ambulance, which took him to hospital where he is recuperating.

A community member, who preferred anonymity, said the com-

munity was sick and tired of the crime in their area. "This will send a message to all who are thinking of continuing with crime that they are not welcome here. Enough is enough and we have taken a stand that we will fight fire with fire. We will not fold our hands while the village is taken to the dogs while police are not helping the situation, " she said.

A community policing forum member in the Mutsha area, who also did not want his identity made known, said there were many inci-dents of crime in the area. “Things are not going well in this area as we do not have a good working relation-ship with the police. This man has been fingered in many crimes and he would be arrested and released all the time and this angered the com-munity. We have vowed to clean the area of all crime ourselves,” he said.

Incidents of mob justice are on the increase in the Vhembe region, with no fewer than five incidents reported this month alone.

In one of the worst scenarios of mob justice, an alleged feared gang-ster in Thohoyandou was cornered and fatally beaten by angry shoppers after snatching a phone and purse from an elderly woman. The man was caught at the local taxi rank where he was necklaced.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with police sending warnings to residents not to take the law into their own hands.

The badly injured alleged thug lies in pain after being left for dead.

The wages of sin are a hard beating by the community. The alleged crime kingpin lies in a pool of blood after being given instant justice by angry community members.

Mr Theodore Maoka, a teacher, was denied bail.

Former PAC councillor Eugine Khosa was denied bail.

The head of immigration at Beit Bridge border post, Elvis Mavhungu (54), as well as 14 other suspects appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court on charges of corrup-tion and defeating the ends of justice last Friday.

The suspects, which includ-ed a SARS custom official, a Home Affairs inspector, an advocate, a teacher, a local businessman, a councillor, two immigration officers and four clearing agents, were arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation under leadership of Hawks head Ber-ning Ntlemeza last Thursday at Musina.

Mavhungu, former senior prosecutor and priest Adv Ed-ward Pesula, and nine other sus-pects were released on R3 000 bail each. Musina Secondary School teacher Mr Theodore Maoka, former Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) councillor in the Musina Municipality Mr Eugine Khosa, immigration of-ficer Mr Edward Tshivhase and a suspected illegal immigrant, Mr Philip Molea, were denied bail. Some of those who were denied bail have pending cases against them while others are still being profiled.

According to a statement released by the Hawks’ spokes-person, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, “The Deputy Direc-tor demanded and received two pairs of shoes worth R3 000 each, so that he could stamp a brand new passport of a foreign national without any supporting documentation. The police of-ficer, on the other hand, issued a false affidavit to a foreign

national in the absence of the recipient for a fee of R1,200.”

The advocate reportedly demanded and received R23 000 for issuing business visas to foreign nationals, while clearing agents were arrested for demanding and receiving between R5 000 and R9 000 for issuing fraudulent SARS Goods Export Permits without goods' being presented.

“The teacher at Musina Sec-ondary School is in the dock for demanding and receiving R2 000 per passport, so that he could attach temporary resident permits, and applying entry and departure stamps on 21 passports without any documentation supporting the foreign nationals’ stay in the country,” Mulaudzi stated.

A former councillor, Eugene Khoza, who owns a Clearing Agency at Beit Bridge and has a pending corruption charge against him, is accused of ac-cepting R7 200 for issuing false immigration stamps to foreign nationals.

Molea is suspected of being an illegal immigrant who uses false names. He was denied bail, pending the verification of his citizenship.

As part of their bail condi-tions, all suspects were barred from attending their work plac-es at the border post. They will appear in court again between June 27 and July 4 for trial.

Their arrest by the Hawks came after six months of inves-tigations into illegal activities at the border post. It has been alleged that officials at the bor-der post are assisting criminal gangs and taking bribes.

Two bright Wits students laid to rest in VhembeThe two Vhembe-born students from the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) who died during the accident on 1 May were laid to rest over the weekend.

The 23-year-old Dakalo Mulima's funeral was held at Mulima Thondoni on Saturday. The different speakers paid tribute to a young man whose academic achievement and community development activities had touched the lives of many

people.The deceased's older brother, Stephen

Mulima, said that the Mulima family wished to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation for all the support, prayers and contributions they had re-ceived during the funeral. “Thank you to all who attended the memorials, funeral, posted messages of comfort and prayed for us to have strength,” he said.

Tributes for Dakalo had flowed from all corners of the country, particularly from former fellow students and the people whose lives he had touched.

Takalani Mulaudzi wrote on Dakalo Muli-ma's Last Words web-site: “You were just an ordinary guy, yet you did extraordinary things, filled with ambition and dreams. You were like a ray of sunshine whose heart is just pure gold and beams with happi-ness. You lived a life of a lion.”

The 19-year-old Ra-chel Matibe was laid to rest on Sunday at Murunwa village.

Rachel's uncle, Je-rome Matibe, thanked all the people who had supported the fami-ly in many different ways during the days of mourning.

Rachel and Dakalo

died in an accident that occurred some three weeks ago after a minibus they were travelling in crashed into the back of a stationary trailer that was on the road in the vicinity of Nyl Plaza. The minibus reportedly burst into flames and claimed the lives of seven students.

Rachel was in her first year, studying towards a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery qualification, and Dakalo had just graduated with a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in March 2016.

While many people are celebrating the sentencing of serial killer Godfrey Ndivhuwo Ntsieni to a lengthy impris-onment, the father of one of the victims is far from impressed.

Mr Azwimpheleli Ndou, father of Tshililo Ndou, one of the two children who were raped and killed by Ntsieni, said he believed that other people had also been involved in his daughter’s killing. Ndou, the elder brother of well-known boxer Phillip Ndou, said in an interview with Limpopo Mirror that a person who identified himself as “Rendani” visited him at this home on 1 May this year and confessed that he had been involved in the killing of his daughter.

“It was early in the morning when this ‘Rendani’ told me he decided to confess since he has now repented after being bap-tized at the ZCC in Moria. I then called the police and civic members from my area, Golgotha, so that they could witness his confession,” said Ndou.

Ndou alleges that one of the two police officers who came to his home tried to threaten Rendani, who later revealed the names of all the people who were involved in the killing. “This happened in the presence of civic members and two policemen,” said a very emotional Ndou.

Ndou also alleged that one of the eight people who had supposedly participated in his daughter’s killing had come to his home and made a confession. He added that Rendani had told him the plan to kill his daughter had been orchestrated “by a prophet at Khalavha and Tshilamba.”

He said that he was concerned that the police were not doing anything with the

information. “They say that Rendani is not a stable person in his mind. The same Ren-dani is appearing time and again in Ntsieni statements and testimony in court, but the police are still ignoring this,” said Ndou.

Ndou said he would never have peace if Rendani were not arrested. To show his frustration, Ndou burst out in court during the sentencing of Ntsieni at the Thohoyandou High Court on Friday.

Police spokesperson Maj Mashudu Malelo, however, said that the police did not deal with hearsay and only facts mattered for the police service. “As far as we understand, Ntsieni has been sentenced and this case is closed.”

Besides this, Ndou is adamant that Ntsieni’s friends in crime are still roaming the streets. He also believes his life is under threat because there are cars that come and park next to his home for the whole night since Rendani con-fessed to him. “My daughter did not deserve to die. She also had a bright future ahead of her. She always told me that she wanted to be a doctor and I believed her, but now she is gone,” said the emotional father.

Ntsieni was found guilty on the following charges: Murder and rape of a first-year agricultural science student, Ms Livhuwani Mmbodi (20) on 14 March; Tshililo Ndou (9) from Golgotha town was strangled and raped on 27 April; nursing science student

Ms Shudufhadzani Thagisa (24) was attacked and hit with a brick on 26 May and she died in hospital in March 2015; Zwivhuya Mashau (8), a Grade 3 pupil at Nazarene School in Thohoyandou, was strangled and raped on 26 June, and Ms Brenda Ndove (45), a cleaner at Univen, was attacked and hit on the head with a brick and raped on 18 July. She died after the ordeal.

Pupils, school staff and Old Mutual officials rejoice during the handover. Standing from left to right are Old Mutual Thohoyandou Sales Manager Ms Girly Mashau, Mr Johannes Budeli (HOD), Ms Jeanette Khangale (Old Mutual) and acting school principal Mr Daniel Nemakhavhani.

Rural school gets new printerJoy and happiness abounded at the rural Mudunungu Primary School in Nzhelele when they recently received a brand new printer and a big photocopy ma-chine. The machines were donated by the Old Mutual Group Scheme in Thohoyandou.

The school's acting principal, Mr Pfuluwani Nemakhavhani, said the school had 260 pupils and seven teachers who relied on outmoded and faulty machines that were no longer conducive to learning at the school. "We are a school in need, a school located in one of the poorest areas of our province."

Nemakhavhani could not stop heaping praises on Old Mutual. "They came here selling their prod-ucts and we told them of our plight. Sooner than we expected, they

approved R20 000 for our school. They invested wisely where it mat-ters most, in the education of the children. This is the foundation for development and we are extremely happy." The local traditional leader, Chief Gunyukunyu Muribwathoho, commended the company for the assistance. "These are the types of companies we need in our commu-nities - companies that know where to plough back. We are excited and grateful for what they have done here at the school," he said.

Representing the company, Ms Girly Mashau said their company was happy to be part of develop-ment, mostly in disadvantaged areas. "As a company we put aside a portion of our income for devel-opment in needy communities," she said.

Journalist Luvhalani Mmbi buried at ManiiniThe drizzling showers and cold weather could not deter hundreds of mourners from paying their last respects to former journalist Livhalani Richard Mmbi of Maniini village outside Thohoyandou.

Mmbi, who worked as a reporter for Univen FM before venturing into farming, died after falling ill earlier last week. The funeral service, which was preceded by a short programme at the local Evangelical Lutheran Church, was concluded at the family grave yard in the village.

A staunch member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mmbi was an active member of the Young Adults League and he was about to be promoted to the Men’s’ League during the time of his death. Because of his love for politics, Mmbi was also known as Makwetu among his friends and imme-diate family members.

Representing the family, Mr Victor Mmbi said Livhal-ani had accomplished his race of life in a responsible manner. “In his 43 years of life, our child achieved a lot in life. It was a life well lived and we will always remember his humility, love, respect and ever-smiling face. Although we know that we will never see him again, we are consoled by his good work, which will remain to be seen time and again. His contributions towards the de-velopment of Maniini village will inspire us to work hard to bring a better life for all.”

Local journalist Godfrey Mandiwana, who studied

journalism with Mmbi, said that when they met at the then Tshisimani College of Education to study journalism, "we immediately became very close because we both come from royal families. He was a very kind character who couldn’t even hurt a fly. I have definitely lost a friend who will be very difficult to replace. He is one of the fearless journalists produced locally and his hard work towards the es-tablishment of Vhembe Journalists Forum (VJF) will remain in our minds forever.”

Mmbi was born on 29 November 1973.

He did his primary schooling at Lurenzhe-ni Primary School and later matriculated at Shayandima High School. He then studied journalism at Tshisimani College of Ed-ucation and thereafter worked for Univen FM. After his farmer father died, Mmbi took over the family farming business and provided the local villagers with chickens, fruit and vegetables. He also served as a caregiver for the local drop-in centre. He is survived by his wife, Thivhafuni Mat-shavha, mother, sisters and young brother.

Changes, a non-profit organization based in Musina, recently joined hands with Ackermans store and Debonairs Pizzas to distribute new clothes and provide lunch to more than 50 less privileged families from Musina Nancefield. The event was held at the Nancefield municipal boardroom. Changes was established in 2013 by Etumeleng Masindi Sefularo, a youth from Musina. The organization presently comprises five board members, Etumeleng Masindi Sefularo (chairperson), Agreement Baloyi (deputy chairperson), Samson Muleya (secretary general), Kedibone Mulaudzi (deputy secretary) and Rudzani Luvhengo (treasurer). In our photo, Ms Sefularo distributes clothes to some underprivileged recipients.

New info centre for Thulamela areaThanks to the new R19 million state-of the-art Thulamela information centre, visitors and communities around Tho-hoyandou will have access to information about the region and what it offers.

The centre, the first of its kind in the Limpopo province, will be a one-stop information centre that will offer a wide range of tourism-related information, such as travelling tips, general infor-mation, 14 offices of the SMMEs, an arts and crafts exhibition, as well as stalls for Tshivenda and

Tsonga traditional attire, said the mayor of the Thulamela local municipality, Cllr Grace Mahosi.

She officially opened the Thu-lamela Information Centre last Wednesday. The event was attended by communities around the area and was supported by various structures, such the Lim-popo Tourism Agency (LTA) and the National Youth Development Agency. “With this eye-catching facility, we call upon commu-nities in the Thulamela and the Vhembe district in particular to take pride in this and take own-

ership of the facility. The facility belongs to the communities and visitors, and it is up to you to jeal-ously protect it against vandalism and theft,” said Mahosi.

According to her, local com-munities, especially disadvan-taged people, benefited during the construction phase as they got some temporarily employ-ment. Mr Mavhungu Musitha, representing the LTA, said that the centre would be used by his agency to showcase some tour-ism activities and destination centres.

Battle of Delville Wood com memo rated

New four-roomed house for mental patient

A parade to commemorate the battle of Delville Wood will be held at the Moths’ Turbi Hills Shellhole on Sunday, 17 July.

More than 2 600 South African soldiers died or were wounded in the six days and five nights of ferocious fighting in this wood in the northeast of France.

It lasted from the 15th to the 20th of July 1914 and went down in the history of WWI as an exam-ple of supreme sacrifice and heroism.

The service in Louis Trichardt will start at 11:00 and, after a short summary of the events at Delville Wood, memorial wreaths will be laid.

Local residents who had family members or close friends who were involved in this battle are welcome to participate in the event. For more information, Alan Odendaal can be contacted at 0836602472.

Ms Thilivahali Nemalale (33), a mentally ill patient, photographed at the one-roomed mud hut in which she and her daughter were previously living.

Life will change for the better for a mentally ill patient from Dzimauli-Muledane and her daughter after Masana Social Training De-velopment, in partnership with the provincial department of health, donated a four-roomed house to her.

Ms Thilivhali Nemalale (33) was over the moon when the MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, the chief executive officer of Masana Social and Training Development, Mr Phineas Muladi, and Mutale Local Municipality’s mayor, Sarah Ram-buda, recently handed over the house to her as part of the recent Freedom Day celebrations.

Ramathuba also handed over a food parcel to Nemalale’s family, which was donated by the South African Social Security Agency. “I am very happy to receive the house for me and my 16-year-old daughter, Vhulenda Nekhumbe. I used to stay with my daughter in a mud hut, which was dangerous as

during heavy rains we did not feel safe,” said Nemalale.

According to her, the house in which she was previously staying had fallen down during the floods of 2000 and left her staying in a mud hut. “As a mental patient, I use the medication that I am given by nurses at the Ha-Rambuda clinic, and they also referred me to the local home-based carers.”

M E C P h o p h i Rama thuba said the

donation of the house to a mentally ill patient was another indication that the government also took care of the mentally ill. “We want the health-care system to come to our communities. We urge our communities to treat mentally ill patients with dignity, because they are also human being like us,” Ramathuba added.

Mr Phineas Muladi of Masana Skills and Train-ing Development said that they had identified the poorest of the poor families and were looking out for mentally ill patients and doing something for them. “We work closely with the provincial depart-ment of health, and we have taken the initiative of helping mentally ill patients and poor communities, building them decent houses.”

Muladi further said that more than 200 young people who had completed their studies at TVEP Colleges were given learnerships in bricklaying and carpentry by Masana.

The MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba (second from right), is joined by Thovhele Ratshibumo II Rambuda (right), the recipient of the four-roomed house, Ms Thilivhali Nemalale, the mayor of Mutale Local Municipality, Cllr Sarah Rambuda, the CEO of Masana Social and Skill Development, Mr Phineas Muladi, and other stakeholders.

Individual learners will benefit through enhancing their per-sonal competencies, knowledge and skills so as to be able to

complete tasks required in their work-place contracts and by legislation.”

Zinyama said that the learners were expected to demonstrate knowledge and critical understand-ing of municipal finance issues in general, and their areas of focus in particular, apply economic principles to municipal finance management and assess foundations and principles of municipal practice in South Africa. “It is their responsibil-ity to ensure that, at the end of this programme, they are able to engage with the broader field of municipal finance management, provide solutions to municipal service management and delivery problems and to teach others about the current and emerging municipal finance issues.”

One of the learners, Albertina Sasa, mentioned that she was happy to have been granted the op-portunity to develop her skills in the workplace. “This goes a long way to display how serious our government is in fighting unemployment through free education. The certificate I will receive at the end of this programme will help in opening new doors in my life.”

Thirty unemployed learners were welcomed earlier this year in different units of Musina Municipality for work-place experiential learning, after they had completed their theoretical classes on municipal finance and administration.

The programme is part of the Local Gov-ernment Sector Education Training Authority (LGSETA) to empower unemployed community members, either to be employable or to create their own jobs. The course, which is administered by Mass Computer Training and Further Edu-cation and Training (FET) College as a training provider, started on 11 January and will be com-pleted at the end of December this year. After completion of the course in December, successful learners will be awarded National Certificates in Municipal Financial Management.

The project coordinator and a lecturer at Mass Computer Training and FET College, Mr Willing-ton Zinyama, said the purpose of the programme was to enable qualifying learners to apply strate-gic level financial management competencies to

The road for Phalaphala FM mu-sic compiler Rabelani Masia to be where he is today has been hard.

Masia started his primary schooling at Mboneni Primary in Dzimauli and went to Rambuda High, matriculated at Azwifarwi High School and the following year he proceeded to Damelin College to study Sound Engi-neering in 2002. A year later he went to the Johanesburg College Campus and completed a diploma in music technology.

“It has never been easy for me to venture into the radio industry. When the time for joining Makha-do Community Radio opened for me, I grabbed it with both hands.” In 2011 he joined Musina FM and Univen in 2013. In 2014 he went to Phala Phala FM as a music compiler.

“I could not resist the oppor-tunity to join Phalaphala FM, because I have wanted to expose my talent to the public for a long time. I took the bull by the horns, because I am not afraid to face new challenges in life. I make sure that the listeners are also part of the music in every show at the station. I open the lines and give them an opportunity to put their ideas across. I also accept con-struc-

tive criticism and this makes me more popular with my listeners.”

Masia says he is not yet satisfi ed by his recent success as he plans to achieve more in life. “I’m still young and there is still more to offer to my community. “I did not allow fame to go to my head, but I gave myself more time to read my books. My secrets for success are hard work, effective time management and the desire to succeed. I set realistic goals for myself and I strive to achieve them without failure. I have also learnt to believe in myself and to learn from my past mistakes at all times,” he explained.

Asked about the recipe of his success, Masia was quick to say: “Perseverance, hard work, moti-vation and effective time man-agement are the only secrets for success. I have always believed that, no matter how many shots I have missed, I’m going to make the next one.”

He advised the youth to study hard, “so that they may be able to make a signifi cant contribution in the community in which they live. Youths must also stay away from

drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for

careers that will benefi t

them in life.”

Bail for illegal cigarette suspect

Well-known reggae singer a Thulamela councillor?

A 30-year-old man appeared in the Waterval Magistrate’s Court two weeks ago in connection with illegal cigarettes.

James Mushekwa’s case was presented be-fore the court, where he was granted bail of R10 000.

Mushekwa, who is a Zimbabwean citizen, was arrested earlier this month in possession of 2 330 cartons of illegal cigarettes. The value of the cigarettes was estimated at R500 000.

According to the pro-vincial spokesperson for the police, Col Ronel Otto, at least three more suspects in this case had fled the scene when Mushekwa was arrested near Elim.

The police had con-fiscated a white Toyota Camry sedan in which the four suspects were allegedly transporting

the illegal cigarettes.Mushekwa must appear in court

again on 29 July.

James Mushekwa’s case was postponed.

Khakhathi Tshisikule addresses the people during the manifesto launch of the IRC.

Mr Thinawanga Ernest Mammba, the founder and president of IRC.

A well-known reggae artist from Limpopo, Khakhathi Tshisikule, will be contesting a seat in the Thulamela municipal council during the up-

coming local government elections.Tshisikule, of Khakhathi & Friends

fame, will be contesting the seat in Ward 17 as a candicate for the newly formed political party, the Interna-tional Revelation Congress (IRC).

The party was founded by Mr Thinawanga Ernest Mammba of Tshitereke village near Vhufulwi and was established three years ago, but it became active in campaigns over the past three months.

According to Mammba, the party, which launched its manifesto last Sat-urday, will only contest some seats in the coming election in Limpopo and Gauteng.

Mammba said the party was going to spread its wings to other provinces in the 2019 national elections.

Tshisikule, who is known for his uncompromising critique of the cur-rent government in his music, said he was going to win the ward, which includes his village of Mbaleni, Mak-warela and Lufule, convincingly. “In my life I never dreamt about some-thing and failed to achieve it. After the 2019 national elections, I will be in parliament,” said Tshisikule.

The outspoken Tsh-isikule said he was en-couraged to join politics by community mem-bers after he helped to solve the issue of burst sewerage pipes in Thohoyandou and Makwarela. “Sewage was spilling all over the town of Thohoy-andou and Makwarela location for more than three weeks without being attended to. After being tired of being a spectator, I decided to take the bull by its horn by raising my concerns on a Phalaphala FM pro-gramme. Within some hours it was fixed.” He added that members of the community who were happy about his intervention then urged him to stand as a coun-cillor, so that he could help to address their challenges from within

the Thulamela municipality.Tshisikule said that he was tired of

the “ANC’s propaganda which prom-ises jobs for all during elections and end up giving them to their card-car-rying members only.”

According to him, in an IRC gov-ernment there will be transparency where all deserving people will be employed.

“As IRC, we want to deliver service to the people. We are tired of seeing the ANC using Nelson Mandela’s name while looking for votes. We respect Mandela and everything he did for this country, but like any dead person, our former president is gone for good. Our people, especially our grandparents, must not be fooled by ANC propaganda that says voting for their party is voting for Madiba.”

He also stressed that the IRC was totally against the issue of same-sex marriage. “We believe the ANC gov-ernment is cursed. The ANC needs help and our country also needs to be saved from the ANC ‘s sinking ship,” said Tshisikule, who is also an ordained pastor of the Obed Ministry Church.

Reggae music lovers in the Vhembe district and guests from other provinc-es were treated to live performances by talented artists and bands during the second Africa Day Reggae Festival on Saturday.

Those who braved the cold and at-tended the festival at the Makhado Show Grounds will treasure the good memories of quality music and the joviality of the night of celebrating African culture and heritage through song and dance.

The AfreeCa Resort’s manager and festival producer, Murendeni Ramuneny-iwa, said the management was thankful for the partnership and co-operation they had received from all stakeholders. “We had such a peaceful and fruitful festival,” Ramunenyiwa said. “We want to thank all the artists who gave such gripping per-

formances. The festival would not have been possible if it were not for the music lovers who knew that it was possible to celebrate the beauty and richness of our continent through music.”

The annual Africa Day Reggae Festi-val provides platforms for local bands, arts and culture groups to showcase their crafts while integrating the diverse cul-tures, their rich unique traditional practic-es, historical inheritance and traditional food through the arts. It also brings trade to the rural areas thus fast-tracking the much-needed community development and empowerment for the local commu-nities through the arts and culture.

“We saw how our people love reggae music,” Ramunenyiwa said. “As for next year, we are planning to bring some god-fathers of the reggae genre from Jamaica,

so that they can be part of this festival.”The festival gave a wide range of

musicians and bands an opportunity to showcase their talents. These included the reggae legend Colbert Mukwevho, P-Postman, Kenny Murabi, JahMan Tshiganzha, Ras Mulweli, Code, Mu-ofhe, Jacky Nethomboni, Khakhathi, and BlackJahman. Heavyweights Dur-ban Nyts played new songs and their anthemic Shumaya. The other artists included Mizo, Da. L.E.S, Yellow Mah, Catcher, and Dezazo.

The festival also had a space in the line-up for hip hop artists as a way of catering for and promoting young, devel-oping artists. The organisers also thanked the Department of Arts and Culture for the continued support in hosting the an-nual Africa Day Reggae Festival.

Gospel music lovers and social media have been abuzz the past two months about the nomination of the Vhembe-based gospel group, Worship House, for the South African Music Awards (Sama) that will held at the ICC in Dur-ban tomorrow (Saturday).

The group has been nominated in the Best Faith Music category for their album, Worship House Project 12. They will compete with four other nominees, Family, Dumi Nkomstad, Joyous Celebration and Woman in Praise 3.

The director of music at Worship House, Mr Norman Nemathaga, is confi dent that they are going to scoop up the award and make their mark in the national music frater-nity. “Although some people may regard us as rookies in the music industry, we are going to surprise the so-called big guns by winning the award. We believe in ourselves and we know that our nomination is proof that we are accomplishing our mission of becoming one of the best gospel music groups in the country.” Nemathaga also thanked all the people who made the band what it is today. “Our nomination did not come as a surprise, because it is a reward for our hard work. It is very important to thank our fans for their unending support. We will never forget to thank our mentor, Pastor Sakkie Dagada, for his

significant con-tribution in the

development of the band.”Lwei Netshivhale from Dzwera-

ni has been nominated in the Best African Adult category. He said he had always believed that God’s timing was the best. “I don’t just sing; my songs heal, teach and make people dance. We listen as God speaks to us,” he said. He added that many of his songs were calls to believers and non-believers to stand up and call Jesus when they were still alive. He encour-aged the children of God not to feel embarrassed about praising and dancing before the Almighty with musical instruments. Mzayisani Boitina has been nominated in the Best Music Video category. “Being nominated for a Sama has come to me as a milestone that means a lot, not only to me, but also to the listeners of my music and those who support my music,” he said. He said that the inspiration for his music came from his growing up in the royal family. “I combine a col-lection of indigenous chant music.”

Another local artist, Vincent Bones, received a nomination in the Best Pop Album category. “When I started music, I never thought I would one day rub shoul-ders with the best in the music are-na”. He said life was bad when he started singing and that he lacked even the basics.

On Monday, 30 May, Thulamela’s Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi attended a sod-turning ceremony at Khoroni Hotel Casino Convention Resort. According to the marketing manager of Khoroni, Ms Yolanda Bester, there is huge need for more accommodation in Thohoyandou. Khoroni therefore decided to extend its current three-star 87 rooms at the Metcourt by 20 rooms. This R22 million investment in the area is to accommodate tourists, business individuals and visitors from outside the Thulamela region. The estimated time of completing the project is November 2016. In the photo, from left to right, are Cllr Tshifhango, Zaheera Lockhat (front office manager), Mayor Mahosi, Albert Eksteen (Khoroni general manager), Cllr Maholwana and Cllr Ligege.

The faces of 79 pupils from the Nwaxinyamani Presidential Primary school brightened up last week when Dembe Tupper-ware donated school uniforms to the children.

Out of the 79 pupils, 35 re-ceived a full uniform, which includes a jersey, tunic, trouser, shirt, shoes and socks, whilst the other 44 pupils each received a pair of school shoes.

The managing director of Dembe Tupperware, Mr Peter Ringani, said that he had chosen Nwaxinyamani school because he had taught at the school for almost 20 years.

He said the donation is his way of saying thank you to the parents who trusted him with their children.

The principal of Nwaxinyama-ni, Mr Steven Malele, said that

he was grateful for the generous donation that would help keep pupils at the same level at school. He encouraged parents to keep the uniforms clean and to take care of the shoes.

Malele further encouraged the children and their parents to understand the importance of having dreams and working hard to make their dreams a reality.

Mrs Lizzy Ringani assists one of the pupils to put on his shoes whilst the school principal, Mr Steven Malele, Dembe Tupperware MD Mr Peter Ringani and other pupils who received new school uniforms and other guests look on.

The acting mayor of Thulame-la, Mr Shadrack Maluleke, en-couraged farmers to associate themselves with other farming bodies and also to ensure that they acquire the necessary skills that will help to develop their farming operations.

The appeal was made at the launch of the Thohoyandou Fruit and Vegetable Market, which took place during an event at the Makwarela Hall a fortnight.

The Thulamela Local Mu-nicipality and Department of Agriculture in Vhembe launched

the fruit and vegetable flea mar-ket stalls at the Thohoyandou Information Centre. Maluleke said the main aim of starting the market was to make Thulamela the hub of economic activity for the producers, market agents and consumers of fresh produce in the district.

“We want to empower the existing cooperatives and to push more people, particularly the youth, to get involved in agriculture and agro-processing to drive economic growth and job creation in our municipali-

ty. We are encouraging you to associate yourselves with other farming bodies and also ensure that you aqcuire the necessary skills that will develop you into a serious agriculture,” said Maluleke.

The president of the African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA), Mr Tshia-neo Mathidi, encouraged other farmers to put their efforts into producing fresh products.

“As we are given the markets, we must work hard, despite the drought.”

Some of the farmers, councillors and community members, photographed during the opening of the new market stalls.

Munyai’s rocket secures place in finalTense victory for Dangerous ScorpionsIn their MTG Soccer Challenge semifinal at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds on Sunday, Makonde FC beat Makonde Youth Development 1-0 to secure a place in the final of the prestigious competition.

As if they were going to bury their oppo-nents alive, Makonde FC approached the game aggressively, with their strikers frustrating the opposition’s defence through their dribbling skills. They missed two clear chances within the first 10 minutes. Their front-runner, Gundo

Shadani Dangerous Scorpions booked a place in the final of the MTG Soccer Challenge by beating Mudaswali United Brothers 6-5 in their semi-final match at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds on Saturday.

Both teams provided max-imum entertainment, despite the fact that no goal was scored during regulation time. Scorpions threatened to score six minutes into the game. Left flank Me-shack Baloyi, however, failed to give the ball the final touch after a square pass from Ronewa Tshi-

balanganda. That was a wake-up call to the defenders of United Brothers. They initiated several promising moves from behind in their search for an early goal.

United missed their first ob-vious scoring chance in the 24th minute. Their bulldozer-striker, Tshifhiwa Singo, shot wide from the edge of the box, fol-lowing a neat pass from Mulalo Rasivhetshele. The game turned lukewarm in the last 15 minutes of the last half. At that stage the teams were playing aerial balls from behind, trying to study their opponents.

The referee, Mr Eric Munyai, flashed the only card in the game two minutes into the last half. Mulanga Tshisaphungo of Scorpions tackled Itani Mphaga from behind.

Scorpions introduced Unarine Rambuda for Ntuwiseni Tshiva-lo, but that did not change the complexion of the game.

The winner was determined through penalty shootout, fol-lowing a full-time goalless draw. Dangerous Scorpions convert-ed six chances while Brothers scored five.

Tshikalange, forced his way through the defence of Develop-ment and unleashed a powerful ground cutter from close range. The keeper of Development, Maan-da Tshibavhalemba, stretched to the limit to execute a brilliant save.

D ivhan i Nedu-vhuledza then re-ceived a pre-cooked pass f rom Lessy M a g w a b e i a n d tried his luck from the 20-meter area. Tshibavhalemba was in the thick of things once more. He palmed the ball away for a corner kick. Mulaedza Tshitangano of Devel-opment was booked for dangerous play in the 27th minute.

Makonde Development took the game to their opponents towards the end of the first half, but it was difficult for them to find the net. The goal that separated the boys from the men came in the 39th minute. Advice Munyai beat the offside trap and blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

Youth Development enjoyed ball possession for the better part of the last stanza, but the oppo-sition defence was rock solid. Fhumulani Mmboi of Makonde FC was reprimanded with a card for wasting time late in the game.

Master Tshikovhi, a boxer from Vondwe, recently received training equipment from Vhatanzi Transport. Photographed during the event were Tshikovhi and the manager of Vhatanzi Transport, Mr Vhulahani Nemadzhilili.

Several crime-prevention strat-egies were discussed during a meeting between the SAPS and the Thohoyandou Indian Community at the Thohoyan-dou Technical High School hall last Friday evening.

During the meeting, the Indian community expressed their dis-appointment and anger towards the treatment they get at the Thohoyandou Police Station. The residents pointed out that the Thohoyandou Indian community was being treated as if they were in the country illegally. They stated that they had reported numerous cases to the Thohoyandou police in the recent past, but the police reacted to all of the crimes as if nothing had happened.

One resident, who could not control his emotions during the meeting, said that he would never forget the day he went to the Tho-hoyandou Police Station to report a case after he had fallen victim to housebreaking and assault. He stated that the officials at the police station sent him from pillar to post throughout the night, before he left the station the following morning without getting any assistance. “We can’t teach you how to do your job, because we all know that you can do it diligently,” said one

angry resident. The residents pointed out that

they were worried about the fact that when an ordinary person fell victim to crime, the police did nothing, but when a police official was attacked or killed, the police made a breakthrough within a short space of time.

The frustrated residents further indicated that the service they got from Malamulele Police Station was by far better than what their Thohoyandou counterparts gave

them.When responding to the ac-

cusations directed at the police, Brig Nelson Marungane said that he was equally disappointed about the manner in which a resident had been treated at the Thohoyandou Police Station when he was denied the right to open a case. He appealed to the residents to insist that they wanted to see the station com-missioner when the officials were reluctant to assist them.

Indian community angry with police

The Makhado LFA match between Gumani Young Stars and Tswika River Bank at Pfananani last Saturday ended ended in a goalless draw.

Bank realised that it would be a difficult day at the office when their leading goal scorer, Pasca Mulaudzi, fumbled at the goal finish. He received a good pass from Kabelo Ramaite within the box and shot wide. At that stage, the keeper, Rudolph Rambau,

was already beaten. Mulaudzi also committed a blunder a little later. He failed to connect with Pfarelo Muluvhu’s square pass.

Thabiso Sebola, the centre back of Stars, was lucky to get away with a yellow card when he obstructed keeper Khumbudzo Makumbe at the edge of the box in a one-on-one situation. The referee, however, did the unexpected when he flashed a yellow card.

Stars threatened to score in the 39th minute. Shadrack Mam-phwe received a beautiful pass from Emmanuel Vukeya and unleashed aimlessly from close range.

The second half started at a snail's pace, with both teams struggling to penetrate each oth-er’s defence. Stars pressed hard in their search for a goal. Bank gained momentum as the game progressed. It was in the 66th

minute that their lethal striker, Kabelo Ramai-te, missed a fortune. He shot wide with the keeper, Rudolph Baloyi, well beaten.

S t a r s r e p l a c e d Tsumbedzo Mushavhe-l a w i t h M i s c h a c k Mushavhela early in the second half. Vutomi Khoza of Stars won a loose ball in 79th min-ute, but his shot at goal hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Avhurengwi Managa of Stars was booked for a late tackle late in the game.

Bank realized that it would be difficult to find the net if they con-tinued volleying from behind and then started to cool the ball down in the middle of the park. They hit the back of the net once, but the referee ruled the player offside.

nal, will be staged at the Tshifu-di Stadium. The quarterfinal matches will be played next Saturday, 11 June.

Madridtas FC ready for the play-offs

Pro team to represent Soutpansberg

The long-awaited SAB League provincial play-off matches will finally be staged at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane this weekend. The play-offs were initially scheduled for last weekend, but had to be postponed in honour of the Nedbank Cup final match between Orlando Pirates and Supersport United, which was staged at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last Saturday.

Five teams from the five re-gional associations in the prov-ince will battle it out for promo-tion to the ABC Motsepe League. The five teams that will represent their respective regional associa-tions are: Madridtas FC (Vhem-be), Ditlou FC (Sekhukhune),

Molemole Academy (Capricorn), Ratanang FC (Waterberg) and Mamaila Citizens from Mopani.

When asked about their level of readiness for the play-offs, the coach of Madridtas FC, Mr Kill-ers Tshisikule, said that they had what it took to bring the trophy back home. He stated that they had played a number of friendly matches in their preparations for the annual event.

Each team will play four matches over the weekend and the top two teams at the end of the tournament will gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.

Molemole Academy from the host regional association will take on Mamaila Citizens in the opening match, scheduled to kick

off at 08:00 tomorrow. Ditlou FC and Ratanang FC will lock horns at 10:00. Madridtas FC will test their strength against Molemole Academy at 12:00. Mamaila Citizens and Ditlou will rub shoulders in what promises to be a humdinger. Madridtas and Ratanang will close the business of the day, starting at 16:00.

Sunday’s fixtures are: Madrid-tas vs Ditlou (08:00), Ratanang FC vs Mamaila Citizens (10:00), Molemole Academy vs Ditlou FC (12:00), Madridtas vs Mamai-la Citizens (14:00) and Ratanang vs Molemole Academy.

Vhembe District was repre-sented by United Artists last year, but they could not get romotion.

Safa Vhembe’s hope in the tournament, Madridtas FC.For the first time in the 27-year-history of the annual Kremetart One-Day Stage Race, Louis Trichardt has entered its own professional team to compete in the gru-elling 175km stage race on 4 June against some of the top names on the South African racing scene.

The idea of entering a local team was adopted by the newly established Soutpansberg Cy-cling Club to promote the aims and objectives of Soutpansberg Youth Cycling – a newly formed club to promote the sport of cy-cling among the region’s youth.

Seen against the background of how much the sport has grown with regard to both road cycling and mountain biking in the Sout-pansberg over the past few years, the time has never been better to put together such a team. In recent years, the region has delivered a couple of brilliant young cyclists, such as CP van Wyk, who is set to remain a force to be contended with in future. He is currently studying at Stellenbosch.

As for the local team selected for Saturday to represent not only the Soutpansberg Cycling Club but the Soutpansberg as a whole, who better than to include some of the town’s top young cyclists currently making a name for themselves in the cycling world.

One of these top cyclists is Kom-bo Bere from Louis Trichardt High School. He was recently se-lected to represent Zimbabwe at the UCI’s World MTB Champs in the Czech Republic later this year. Other top names include that of Marco Roets, as well as those of youngsters Richard Lambert, Douglas Archer, Ger-hart Meyer, who have excelled in the sport of mountain biking over the past few months. These youngsters, all sporting numer-ous podium wins in races at both local and national level, are all included in the team, along with two more senior and experienced roadies, Rick Coetzee and Jandré van Jaarsveld.

According to team captain Rick, they have set their goal to at least take one stage win during the race. “For the past two months we have been training intensively, following a rigorous training programme. In total, each cyclist has, on average, clocked up around a 1 000km in the training seat. This weekend will see the culmination of all our hard work and we look forward to the race,” said Rick.

Getting the team together was about the easiest part. Getting a sponsor for the race was a bit more difficult. Were it not for team sponsor Tac-Pulse stepping up to the plate, the team would not have been able to race on

Saturday. Tac-Pulse, originally from

Wolmaransstad, recently set up another tactical medical emer-gency response branch in Louis Trichardt. They were keen to get on board to support the team and promote their services. The team will be riding in the colours of team Tac-Pulse on Saturday. Not only did Tac-Pulse sponsor the team, but they are also the official emergency medical re-sponse team for the whole of the Kremetart weekend.

“We would like to invite the public to come and support these Louis Trichardt youngsters,” said Rick. They will compete in the elite men’s category, with their race scheduled to start at 06:30 on Saturday. Supporters should, however, be there at an earlier time to be sure not to miss them. Along the route, they can also support the team by getting onboard the supporters bus at a cost of R500 per person. (For the complete race programme for the whole of the weekend, including the schedule for road closures and a route map, see the Freewheel 2016 Kremetart supplement in this edition of the Zoutpansberger).

“From my side I would like to thank my team members, sponsor and supporters in advance for their hard work, commitment and support,” said Rick.

Team Tac-Pulse, who will represent not only Louis Trichardt but the whole of the Soutpansberg on Saturday during the Kremetart 175km One-Day Stage Race. It is the first time in the 27-year history of the Kremetart that a local team will compete at a professional level against some of the top names on the South African cycling scene during the race. Eight teams in MTG Soccer ChallengeThe semifinal matches of the MTG Soccer Challenge were played at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds over the past weekend.

In the first match, Shadani Dangerous Scor-pions beat Mudaswali United Brothers 6-5. The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out as no goal was scored in the reg-ulation time. In the second match, Makonde FC beat Makonde Youth Development 1-0 to secure a place in the final.

Eight teams from Makonde and Khubvi

paticipated in the tournament. The other four teams were Makonde Home Defenders, Tsh-ilulu Young Tigers, Tshilulu FC and Tswera Young Masters.

According to one of the organisers of the tournament, Mr Madambini Maswime, the champions of the tournament will become R2 500 richer and they will also receive a soccer kit. Cash amounting to R1 800 and soccer kit are awaiting the team that will finish in second place. The third- and fourth-placed teams will take home R800 and R500

respectively. Teams that were booted out of the competition in the quarterfinal stage will each receive a consolation prize of R100.

The results for the quarterfinal matches are: Shadani Dangerous Scorpions 5, Tshilulu Young Tigers 4; Mudaswali United Brothers 3, Makonde Home Defenders 1; Makonde Youth Development 1, Tswera Young Mas-ters 1 and Makonde FC 3, Tshilulu FC 1.

The final will be staged at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds on Thursday, 16 June.

Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali of Baroka FC is the Nedbank Cup Young Player of the tour-nament.

Ravhuhali, who hails from Makavhini vil-lage, Ha-Manenzhe in Mutale, received the trophy and R50 000 during the PSL awards ceremony held at Emperors’ Palace in Johan-nesburg on Monday evening. He played a key role in helping Baroka, the latest inclusion in the PSL, to reach the semifinals of the es-teemed Nedbank Cup.

“I am excited about the honor, but always believed that I would win this award. I was just waiting for this day to arrive, so that I could get it,” said Ravhuhali.

The 24-year-old Ravhuhali played for Makavhini Black Movers before he joined Joe Express two seasons ago. He was later lured to the Polokwane-based Baroka FC. He added that he was honoured to be chosen among other players from both the PSL and First Division

teams that participated in the Nedbank Cup.Ravhuhali is the eldest child of former

Black Movers player Jutas “Scara Masinga” Ravhuhali and Lorraine Phuravhathu. He started playing soccer at the age of nine. After completing his primary education at Makavhi-ni Primary, he went to Niani Secondary School in Ha-Manenzhe. where he passed his matric.

His attempt to get a tertiary qualification was cut short after he was forced to drop out from a private FET college where he was studying for a qualification in marketing management, due to a lack of funds. “After dropping out from the FET, I then decided to focus on my soccer talent. Fortunately, Baroka was having trials in June last year and I succeeded,” said Ravhuhali, who had since featured in all the games that Baroka played last season.

Besides interests from PSL giants such as Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Chippa United FC and others, Ravhuhali said he was

focusing on his holiday instead of worrying about his next move. “I am still contracted to Baroka, which is also going to play in the PSL. Any team that wants my signature will have to speak to my team,” said the promising left back. Baroka have already indicated that they are not going to stand in the way of any player who is wanted by other PSL teams. Asked to comment about his desired destination, Ravhu-hali said: “I would prefer to play for Chiefs as there is an opportunity for me to play there.”

Ravhuhali lives with his parents, fiancé Thompho Muleya, his daughters Ronewa and Uhone. The extended family, which includes his brother Mpfariseni (21) and sister Mulalo (19), share a two-room abode at Makavhini village. Ravhuhali said he would use his prize money of R50 000 to complete his parents’ house. He had already started extending the house with two extra rooms from the salary he was earning at Baroka.
