Lecturer Whether you'd like to learn a new language for travel, school, work or just for fun, there is a variety of effective language learning strategies you can use to improve your skills. One of the most important qualities of a good language learner is a strong drive to communicate. Language is a tool for communication, after all, so it's very helpful to have a real need and desire to communicate in the language. Let's say, for example, that you want to study French. One way that you can create the need to communicate in French is to plan a trip to a Frenchspeaking country. You could also try to make connections with French speakers, either in the area where you live or via the internet. Research shows that if you use the language for real communication, you'll make progress faster. The best language learners are also not shy about making mistakes. They're willing to make guesses when they aren't sure about what something means or how to say something in another language. Many people feel ashamed when they make a mistake or say something that others don't understand. What's important to remember is that learning a language is not like learning some other subjects. It's good to experiment and guess, and it's great to make mistakes because you learn from them. In order to learn a language effectively, you have to be an active learner. What does being an active learner mean? The first step is setting goals for yourself. Perhaps you'd like to improve your listening or pronunciation skills, or learn vocabulary in order to be able to discuss sport or films. Whatever your goals are, write them down. Writing your goals will make you more likely to achieve them. The next step is to study and practise the language. When it comes to studying, there are many useful tips. Of course, everyone learns in different ways and has different needs for learning the language, so you should try to find what works best for your learning style and goals. Make a commitment to study for a certain amount of time every day or every week. Be reasonable. You can make good progress if you study two or three hours a week. It's important to study a balance of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, even if your goals only focus on one or two of those skills. Why? Because studying only one or two of the skills won't help you communicate. For example, if you focus on listening skills only, you may be able to understand someone very well in conversation, however, unless you practise speaking and build your vocabulary through reading, you may not be able to respond as quickly or as effectively. It's helpful to join a language class if you can. This will give some structure to your studies and help you maintain your goals. In addition, some practical ideas for studying the language on your own include listening to radio or internet broadcasts, TV shows or films in the target language. You can also

Of course, probably the best way to improve language skills is by spending time in a place where the language is spoken and interacting with the people there.
