Darlene Caviness (Lenny Magrath): Darlene has entertained audiences inthe Valdosta area since 1997. She feelsa certain connection with her character, Lenny. Both arethe oldest ofthree sisters, both grew up in the south, andboth love pecans. Darlene has also performed in "Out ofOrder," "Moon Over Buffalo," "Kiss Me Kate," "OnGolden Pond," and "Let's Murder Marsha" to name afew.Ifyou don't see Darlene on stage, chances are that she canbe found back stage somewhere. While she enjoys thetechnical aspects ofashow, there is still nothing quite likethe limelight.

Lenore Carpenter Giardina (Chick Boyle): "Crimes ofthe Heart" marks Lenore's second appearance on theTGVstage. She was previously seen as Suzy in "Wait UntilDark" and also helped with TGV's "Little Shop of Horrors." Previous roles in other theaters include Corie in"Barefoot inthe Park," Ms. Hannigan in"Annie," Diana in"Lend Me aTenor," and Myhrrinne in"Lysistrata. She hasalso enjoyed performing vocally in several cabaret andvaudeville productions over the last few years. Lenorewould like to thank her husband, Greg, and Moody AirForce Base's 3rd Flying Training Squadron for all theirsupport.

John Fretti (Doc PorterV. This is John's third playwithTGV. He was previously seen as Happy Holiday in"Christmas Crisis at Mistletoe Mesa" and as Sam Hendrixinthis season's thriller, "Wait Until Dark." He says it hasbeen atrue pleasure to work with this cast and crew andthanks TGV for the opportunity.

Cast Biopropto*

Gail Powell (Meg Magrath): Gail has recently returned toValdosta after spending the summer working for "Horn intheWest," a theatre company in North Carolina. This is herthird show with TGV. Gail's previous role's includeMaggie in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Alais in "The Lionin Winter."

Patty White-Cosev (Babe Botrelle): Patty was most recently seen as Audrey in TGV's summer hit, "Little Shop ofHorrors." She is employed at South Georgia PsychiatricCounseling Center and Behavioral Health Services as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Patty loves the partofBabeand has had a lot of fun with this really quirky character.

Rick Patrick (Barnette Llovd): A native ofPerry, FL,Rick has lived in Valdosta for 12 years. He has been involved with TGV since 1993 and currently serves on theBoard ofDirectors as PlayreadingChairman. Rick wasmost recently seen as Orin Scrivello in "Little Shop of Horrors." His previous roles over the years have ranged fromCol. Jessup in "A Few Good Men" to Elwood Dowd in"Harvey."

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

This isthe section in your program where you usually find the play's director waxing pretentious about the challenges he/she faced in bringing itall together. For example, "The majorchallenge Ifaced was motivating the actors to bring realistic characters to life from merewords written on apage." Well, Beth Henley put the words for the play you are about to seeupon the page, and she is amaster ofher craft Ms. Henley can take mere words and seamlessly create amagical tapestry of light and color, sound and beauty. As for my actors, theyreally didn't need much motivation from me. Ican honestly say (without gushing too much)that the personalities and various talents ofthis cast have made my directing experience joyous. They remind me every day why we call these things "plays."

I've been thinking agreat deal about the title "Crimes of the Heart." Why did Beth Henleychoose itfor her play? Her characters are basically good people who stare adversity mtheface, even ifit terrifies them So, besides the obvious attempted murder ofahusband (whichI think becomes justified as the play progresses), where isthe "crime?"

As amember ofthe "Oprah" generation, I immediately look for the male oppressor when Ihear the word "crime" associated with the play and then see astage full ofwomen. However, the men we see onstage in this show are nothing but kind and loyal (though not always totheir wives). Babe's husband is obviously oppressive, but he's punished even before the playstarts. Infact, the only true crime in the show isperpetrated against him.

We hear the old Gran'Daddy could be oppressive attimes, but consider the source. Meg isthe only character to ever really paint him in anegative tight Take one look at what she'sdone to Doc and you'U find ithard to emphasize with Meg's views on oppression. In fact,"Crimes ofthe Heart" isrefreshingly free ofmuch ofthe male bashing associated with manyplays involving strong female characters. The Magrath sisters seem to know that they'vebrought most ofthe problems they face in life upon themselves.

So again, why "Crimes ofthe Heart?" Another way ofsaying itwould be "Bad things doneout of or for, love." That seems to make sense to me because each of the three main characters suffers because ofsomething she's done out oflove. Lenny lives inastate oflonelinessbecause she's dedicated to Old Gran'Daddy. Meg has pretty much screwed up her whole lifetrying to live up to Old Gran'Daddy's expectations (and has hurt others along the way). Babeis probably going to be charged with attempted murder, acrime Ithink she committed out oflove (for who Iwon't say out of fear ofgiving too much away). Each of the sisters hascaused pain, to herselfor someone else, by acting out oflove.

Ithink Beth Henley chose the title "Crimes ofthe Heart" because itreflects asort ofthemefor the play - Love does not justify all. Ifacourse of action is wrong it stays wrong (even ifjt's motivated by the heart).

I hopeyouenjoy the show.

History ofTheatre Guild Valdosta

Theatre Guild Valdosta (TGV) was organized in1989 through the efforts of the Lowndes/ValdostaArts Commission as an autonomous communitytheater group with non-profit, tax-exempt status. After three years as a group of vagabond playerswith no "home," the group purchased the old'Dosta Theater building in 1992, and set aboutconverting the dilapidated movie theater into aplayhouse for live stage performances.

Thanks to many supporters and one largebenefactor, TGV now owns three adjoiningbuildings in historic downtown Valdosta, performsfour main stage shows, an evening of one-acts andtwo children's shows each year. All of this is donein order to provide high quality theater experienceto as diverse an audience and group of participantsas possible.
