    The Chalice

A publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK

    CONNECTIONVol. 5 No. 13 April 11, 2013

    I am proud to

    be a minister

    at the First

    Christian

    Church ofEdmond. This

    is a wonderful

community of faith that practices what

it preaches. Let me give you a Top Ten

    List:

    --This church reaches out. From

    Breakfast on Boulevard to Renewing

Hand to all of the wonderful work that

went on in our 40 Days of Compassion,

FCC has a heart for reaching out.

    --This church reaches in. Several

wonderful acts of kindness have been

done for so many in need in our church

family. From helping with yard work at

the Berrys home to helping others get

through a rough month, FCC helps out

    its members.

    --This church teaches kids about

our faith. Our Pastors Class has just

been completed and 10 kids have

explored their faith and have a closer

    relationship with Jesus Christ.

--This church teaches adults aboutour faith. Our upcoming FaithLife

    Connections event, hosted with

    Phillips Theological Seminary, helps

us to explore other areas of our faith in

depth, so that we can hear Gods word

    more clearly.

--This church is full of great people

we just have some wonderful people

in our church family. Looking over the

list of published authors who will be

meeting and greeting this Sunday, I am

intrigued by all of the interesting stories

    that can be told.

--This church has a dynamic youth

program. What a great group of youth

we have here at the church. We willmiss Greg Bunton and his family and

all of the great programs he started here

at our church, but we have a wonderful

    program with great leadershipthank

you, Mark!that will continue to lead

this vital part of our church family.

--This church has great plans for

the future. Our visioning process, our

ReNew program and our future story

confirm that we are listening carefully

for Gods direction for our church in the

future. We are prayerfully looking to

what we are called to be and do.

    --This church believes in prayer.

From our Elders Prayer Breakfast to

our prayer triads to our Good Friday

prayer chain, we are constantly turning

to God in prayer. We believe God

    hears each of our prayers!

--This church is a place of joy.

As we greet one another on Sunday

morning, as we see each other out in

the community, as we work togetheron meaningful projects, even in long

committee meetings, there is a spirit of

joy here that comes from God.

    --This church has fun together.

And after experiencing our Holy Humor

Sunday last Sunday, where we can

come together and laugh as a people of

God, we reflect that joy to our world.

Thank you for the privilege of

    serving this wonderful church.

One of the ministries we support is Week of Compassion (WOC). (WOis the relief, refugee and development mission fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). WO

seeks to equip and empower disciples to alleviate the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and promotions of mission opportunities.) Week of Compassion has challenged Disciples Churches to become a part of the Circle of

Compassion - 100 Disciples Churches to raise $10,000 for the endowment fund for Week of Compassion. First Christian Edmohas accepted this challenge! We are hosting a dinner and an auction event on Sunday, April 28, in the Family Life Center to support theCircle of Compassion endeavor. COME CONNECTAt FaithLife Connections! With Guest Panelists Jari Askins, Former Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma & FCC Edmonds Own, Larry Ba

Saturday, April 20, 9 AM - 3 PM Room 116A FaithLife Connections (FLC) event will be held at First Christian Edmond on Saturday, April

20, from 9 AM to 3 PM. FaithLife Connections is an ongoing lecture/conversation series offering a

forum for participants to explore faith values in daily life. Guest panelists include Jari Askins,

former Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma, and FCC Edmonds own, Larry Ball. This presentation called Exploring the Intersections of Religion and Politics by Dr.

Joe Bessler (theRobert Travis Peake Associate Professor of Theology at Phillips Theological

Seminary), will explore the intersection of religion and politics by noticing how major political

speeches are structured in ways that overlap with the structure and topics of Christian faith and

theology. Well consider several reasons why that overlap exists. By exploring these connections

and tensions between the religious and the political, lay leaders will see better the importance of

distinguishing our religious convictions from our political commitments.

Those who seek to make connections between faith matters and daily life are welcome to

attend. Registration forms are available at the Welcome Desk. Cost is $30/person and

includes lunch. Please indicate if childcare is needed including an additional $5 with the Registration Fee.For more information, visit www.ptstulsa.edu/faithlifeconnections or call (918) 610-8303.

A Huge Thank You: As I said at Eds memorial service, I would never, if I spent days anddays, be able to adequately thank you, First Christian Church, for your outpouring oflove and compassion for both Ed and me, during this very long 3-year journey of illness. We dont have a lot of family who live close by, and you took their place over and over. Our Challengers Sunday School class, the Elders, Renewing Hands, in addition to staffmade our lives bearable, and took our minds, if only momentarily, away from thedisease Ed faced. If you came to see him, you know that his attitude was wonderful tothe end. And so, in this very simple and heartfelt way, I thank you all for your visits, food, owers, telephone calls, gifts, cards, emails, and most of all for your daily prayers. We felt you lifting us up as you prayed for both of us. Disciples Retirement Community of OKPrepares to Launch Care Partners Ministry Program

In the 1950s a group of individuals formed a ministry to raise funds and build the OklahoChristian Retirement Community (OCRC) or the Oklahoma Christian Home as it was commo

known. This ministry provided care to retired individuals who had faithfully served the churchEdmond First Christian Church continues to support this ministry as a number of our memberare long-time residents. Today there are over 30 individuals residing in Bradford Village,

Edmonds former OCRC, who may need future financial assistance. The Disciples Retirement

Community of Oklahoma (DRCO), formed in 2005, is working to provide future benevolentneeds.

The DRCO board envisions a healthcare ministry that would embrace caring for Disciples

Christ senior adults across Oklahoma. In January 2013, the Care Partners Ministry was formeDonations and grants are needed to fund this ministry as plans develop to model it after two bpractices programs: Caregiver-to-Caregiver Network by Southern Caregiver Resource Cente

San Diego, CA, and Caregiving Team by Interfaith CarePartners in Houston, TX.The Care Partners Ministry is a collaborative ministry serving Oklahomas elderly, extrem

ill, physically/mentally challenged and their caregivers. This ministry helps seniors maintaintheir independence and helps caregivers focus on the importance of self-care. Teams of traine

volunteers help the individual or caregiver access community resources, provide services, assiself-care, and are a listening ear. Volunteers respond uniquely to the Care Partners needs, whrelying on the power and support of the overall team. Volunteers are being sought from DOC

congregations across OK.This is an exciting time for the DRCO and the Christian Church in Oklahoma. Please

prayerfully consider financially supporting this new ministry. For those already contributing, thDRCO expresses gratitude. For more information and updates, contact Rev. Devon McAnallyAssociate Regional Pastor for Health Care Advocacy, at [email protected] visthe website www.okdiscipleshealth.org

Contributions may also be mailed to: DRCO 301 NW 36th Street, OKC, OK 73118.
