Internetblogger MerlinMann oncesaid, Neverlet the guy

with thebroom decidehow manyelephantscan be in the

parade. A wonderful quote. I read it ina blog by Derek Penwell. And I think itsrelevant to many different areas of ourlives, especially church work.

One of the things that happens quiteoften in churches is that creative ideas canget squelched.

Id love to start a new outreach

ministry! How do I do it? And theanswer isYou have to talk with themoderator of X committee, who takes itto the board, who then supervises youridea and turns it over to a staff member, who revises that plan and then

By that point the conversation is overand the idea, and enthusiasm, are gone.Unfortunate.

It seems that the big question is--Whoapproves the idea? We have structures

and committees that make sure that noone gets blamed for a bad idea. Manytimes that can be a good thing. Thereare some things that we dont wanthappening in our church.

Can we have the roller derbycompetition in our Family Life Center?

Wouldnt it be great to have an all-night water balloon fight in the church?

The National Strippers Conventionwould love to use your facility soon!

Yes, there are some activities wedrather not do.

But what about the guy with thebroom deciding about the elephants? What is a parade supposed to do?Entertain. And do elephants entertain?Yes. So why cant we have elephants?

Because they cause some headaches forthe guy with the broom. And he stops agood thing just because he doesnt like it.

It can be that way in churches.Sometimes we stop some good ideasbecause it may be too much work, orweve tried it before and it didnt work,or weve heard that someone is opposedto it, or it would require a little extrafunding The excuses can be endless. And it only takes one guy with a broom

to get the negativity flowing. And thatguy may not have attended church foryears, or have helped with any projectsin the past. But the negativity becomesinfectious.

However, sometimes the ideas areworth trying. And dying churches arenotorious for not doing anything.

Thats what I love about our churcSure, weve tried some things throughthe years that didnt work, but weve alhad some unparalleled successes. Yes,its been lots of work and weve learnedmuch along the way. We keep tryingto reach out in Christs name to ourcommunity.

Our 29 Gifts theme this month is agreat example. The theme is based on

secular book, and yet the message is veChristian. Giving enriches our lives asmuch as it blesses those who receive. Ithink Ive heard it is more blessed to givthan to receive.

As we come together as a communof faith, I think it is important toencourage and foster creative ideas. Wknows what kind of ministry may reachout to someone in Edmond?

    29 Gifts / 29 Days:

    The Gift of Encouragement

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a mans gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage... - Romans 12:6-8 NIV

The gift of encouragement is a special gift, and, a beautiful one...a necessary gift in a world so in need of compassion andgiving. Encouragement feels great but it does not always come naturally. Encouragers, or those that encourage, are specialpeople. They give encouragement almost without thought. It seems to come easily - an instant reaction to those in need of it.Encouragers gravitate toward those who are discouraged or struggling...almost like a magnets pull. They feel a need for it;they are drawn to that need; and, they respond. They desire to make others feel better. They lift spirits through their positivewords, provide wonderful counsel and a listening ear.

This week, you try it - give the gift of encouragement! Give a smile, a nod, a hug. Give a you can do it! or an Ibelieve in you! Give a listening ear, a consoling heart, a motivating talk, a bit of advice. Give the gift of compassion andgrace when it is most needed...just by being present with that person that needs compassion and grace. You can do it - Iknow you can - I believe in you - God believes in you!
