Letter for speakers workshop on "Energy, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change scenarios" (29-30 June 2004, EEA, Copenhagen).

Thank you very much for you willingness to give a presentation at the workshop on "Energy, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change scenarios" (29-30 June 2004, EEA, Copenhagen).

As you already know, the objectives of this workshop are to: · Exchange experiences in scenario modelling approaches and outcomes, including studies on long-term greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies, within EEA member countries, the European Commission and in other organisations including NGOs. · Discuss the initial results of the EEA scenario work, performed by the European Topic Centre on Air and Climate Change for EEA's 2005 State of the Environment and Outlook report.

For this reason in the workshop programme quite some time is reserved for discussion, both in plenary and in break out sessions.

Practical issues

Please note the following practical issues regarding the presentations:

· The time reserved for each presentation is 15 minutes, followed by a discussion. · Please inform me Friday 18th of June at the latest about the title and subject of your presentation. · Please send your presentation (MS Power Point) electronically to Bitten Eriksen ([email protected]) Thursday 24th of June at the latest. Your presentation will then be available at the computer in the conference room during the workshop. · We would like to make all presentations available at the ETC/ACC web-site as part of the workshop report.

Content and structure

We would like to remind you that the workshop aims to address the following questions:

1. What would be developments in EU energy use and supply, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change impacts by 2030-2050 with no further policy actions? 2. What should the reduction of EU greenhouse gas emissions be by 2030, to be consistent with the EU long-term climate objective, under different possible future global emission reduction schemes? 3. Which policies and which technological developments are needed to achieve substantial EU greenhouse gas emission reductions by 2030 and what are their costs? 4. What are the most relevant uncertainties in 2030 in scientific

aspects, policy areas, and in socio-economic developments?

Depending on the subject of your presentation you might wish to relate to one or more of those questions, but we would like to give you considerable freedom in this. In case you are giving a presentation from a certain country perspective, instead of referring to EU targets and policies you can of course refer to the targets and policies of your own country.

We would like to ask all speakers to address in any case the following topics in their presentation, because we think they are important: (1) use of renewable energy, (2) emission trading and (3) the kind of uncertainties related to looking as far ahead as 2030.

We are looking forward to your contribution and to meeting you in a few weeks time in Copenhagen!

If you have any questions or remarks, please let me know.

Yours sincerely

Willemijn Tuinstra
