Julie DiCaro is a recovering attorney and is a current sports radio host and sportswriter in Chicago. She is a well-known author having written for outlets such as the New York Times, Washington Post, Deadspin, Vice Sports, and Huffington Post. Ms. DiCaro attended Indiana University, graduating in 1995 with degrees in journalism and French. She went on to study law (DePaul University College of Law 1998) and practiced for more than a decade, concentrating on representing the marginalized. In 2006, Ms. DiCaro started the popular Chicago Cubs blog, a League of Her Own, which was subsequently picked up by the Chicago Tribune and led to her amassing a large Twitter following. In 2012, she joined the Tribune to oversee the paper’s burgeoning blog network. Ms. DiCaro moved to sports talk radio in 2014, serving as a host and update anchor for WGN’s nascent 87.7 The Game. In 2015, she moved to 670 The Score, where she hosts several times a week, and has a regular show on weekends with sportswriter Maggie Hendricks. An outspoken critic of sexism in the media and online harassment, Julie joined with ESPN’s Sarah Spain in 2016 to create the viral video #MoreThanMean, for which she has many awards. To date, #MoreThanMean has been viewed more than 4 million times with no paid support and sparked a national conversation about online abuse. Join us as Julie addresses “Mean Tweets” including legal issues such as gender discrimination, cyberbullying and today’s social media.

Julian is VP of Legal Market, Office of CTO, at Seal Software, where he leads alignment of product, market and technology strategy. Prior to Seal, Julian managed various Legal Technology initiatives at Google. As part of his role, he was responsible for developing, implementing and supporting technologies that improved efficiencies within Google’s Legal Department. He also worked in a similar capacity at the Walt Disney Co and as a software engineer for a large international law firm, Davis Polk. Julian is a Knowledge Advisor at International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) and a frequent speaker at various industry events, like CLOC, ILTA and LegalTech. JOHN BATES General Counsel/Chief Information Security Officer, Clarity Insights
John is general counsel and chief information security officer for Clarity Insights in Chicago. He is responsible for all legal, risk management, IT security, and compliance functions and has led HITRUST and ISO 27001 certification programs. Previously, he was with U.S. Cellular’s IT strategic sourcing and vendor management group. His responsibilities included negotiation, drafting, and approval of large scale IT infrastructure agreements including professional services, software licensing, hardware/appliance acquisition, maintenance/support, outsourcing, and training. Prior to working with U.S. Cellular, John served as in-house counsel and a business leader in a variety of technology industries including software development, electronic auditing, eCommerce, music licensing, manufacturing, and consumer electronics. He currently serves as immediate past-chair of the ACC Intellectual Property Network, IP Network liaison for the IT, Privacy & eCommerce Network, and a member of the Chicago Chapter’s Street Law program. John received a BA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his JD from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law.
MARYJANE HALL Vice President & Assistant General Counsel, Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago
Maryjane oversees general management of all transactions with third parties, with a concentration in complex IT, hosting, SAAS and services agreements. She has expertise in data privacy, network security, and cyber law, and related industry standards (NIST, COBIT, ITIL, SSAE18/SOC, etc). Maryjane has additional expertise in compliance with state and federal data protection and data breach law and regulation, with a focus on federal banking regulations.

As a data, privacy and security, health care, and employee benefits partner Adam provides counsel on data breach and cybersecurity issues across various industries, particularly health care. He represents clients with respect to employee benefits regulatory and compliance issues including designing, implementing, and maintaining employee benefit plans. He also advises clients on issues related to managed care laws and telemedicine. Adam has experience helping clients preparing for, responding to, and recovering from data, privacy and security incidents. He is a Certified CSF Practitioner, a designation given by the Health Information Trust Alliance (HITRUST). Prior to joining King & Spalding, Adam was a member of a nationally recognized law firm where he was a part of their health care and life sciences practice group. Michelle is co-chair of the Real Estate Practice and focuses on all aspects of real estate transactions. Lenders, borrowers and real estate private equity sources seek her counsel on acquisitions and dispositions, complex commercial loans and capital market transactions, as well as in restructuring and workouts. Michelle has extensive experience in all aspects of real estate finance, including in loan participations. She also has extensive leasing experience, representing both landlords and tenants in office, retail, warehouse and industrial leases, and extensive experience in the areas of construction and development. She represents clients in the acquisition and financing of retail, office, warehouse and multi-family housing projects across the country and advises on numerous cross-border transactions. Christy has served as InvenTrust’s General Counsel since 2017. She joined InvenTrust in 2014 as Managing Counsel – Transactions and held that position until November 2016 when she was named Vice President, Deputy General Counsel and Secretary. Prior to that, Christy served at the Inland Group Inc., managing, reviewing and drafting legal documents and matters for InvenTrust’s acquisitions, dispositions, corporate contracts and spin-offs. Prior to joining the Inland Group, Christy was an Associate Attorney at The Thollander Law Firm and held various positions at David & Associates. Christy serves on the Ravinia Associates Board and Nominating Committee. MICHAEL LUFRANO Senior VP, Community Affairs and General Counsel, Chicago Cubs
Michael is executive vice president, community affairs and chief legal officer for the Chicago Cubs. He joined the team in July 2004 and is responsible for Cubs’ community affairs, government relations, communications, neighborhood relations and charitable activities. He also serves as chief legal counsel for the team. In his time with the Cubs, Michael has led efforts to develop and maintain positive relations with the community around Wrigley Field, including neighborhood elected officials, residents and businesses. These relationships have helped gain City Council and Landmarks Commission approval for renovations of Wrigley Field, including private investment in development inside and outside the ballpark and a new night game and neighborhood protection ordinance authorizing additional night baseball games and bringing musical concerts to Wrigley Field while protecting the community. Since Michael joined the team, Cubs charitable efforts have supported more than $37 million to help organizations serving Chicago and its communities. From 1993-95, Michael served in the White House as special assistant to the President and deputy director of advance. He helped coordinate and implement daily and long-term schedules for the President and First Lady and helped produce and design White House trips and events, including the President’s trip to Normandy in 1994 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. Prior to joining the Cubs, he worked as an attorney in the Chicago office of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal where his practice focused on intellectual property, media and First Amendment law, Internet law and commercial litigation. He has also worked in the office of the corporation counsel for the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Michael graduated magna cum laude with a BA in economics from the University of Illinois at Urba-na-Champaign and cum laude from Harvard Law School.

KIMBERLIE PEARLMAN Associate General Counsel, Related Midwest
Kimberlie, an attorney with more than 18 years in real estate practice, has experience across a wide range of legal matters and asset classes including acquisitions and dispositions, financings, leasings, joint ventures, and new construction and renovation projects, involving office, retail, multifamily, hotel, industrial and vacant properties. Before joining Related Midwest in 2017, Kimberlie was a partner at DLA Piper LLP where she practiced for 12 years in the real estate group. Prior to DLA Piper LLP, she practiced at the Chicago Federal Home Loan Bank, Sidley Austin LLP and Duane Morris LLP. Kimberlie is a board member of Chicago Run, a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting wellness and fighting childhood obesity through running programs for underserved youth and was an elected board member of a local school council for a Chicago Public School. She has served on the board of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Cook County and earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with her law degree from The John Marshall Law School.

Robert (Bob) is the VP & Assistant General Counsel – Labor & Employment Law for Stericycle, Inc., a world- leading business-to-business services company providing organizations, large or small, with a wide array of essential and highly specialized compliance-based solutions. Based in Stericycle’s Northbrook office, Bob is responsible for providing legal counsel and training to management and HR, supporting HR initiatives, developing policies and procedures to improve Stericycle’s employment law compliance, and helping to minimize overall risk. Prior to joining Stericycle, Bob was trained at nationally recognized firms and has spent his career advising clients on a broad range of labor and employment matters and representing clients in employment related litigation, arbitrations and administrative agency proceedings.
CLIFFORD HART Partner, Borden Ladner Gervais
Clifford advises employers on the interpretation and application of collective agreements, union organizing campaigns, unfair labour practices and strikes and picketing. He acts as employer spokesperson and strategist in the negotiation of collective agreements in the private sector and broader public sector. He also advises employers on the development and implementation of human resources policies and procedures. He appears regularly as employer counsel in grievance and interest arbitrations, and before administrative tribunals including the Ontario Labour Relations Board, the Canada Industrial Relations Board and the Human Rights Tribunal. Clifford has broad experience in the automotive, transportation, municipal, hospitality and retail sectors, among others. He also acts as counsel to National Hockey League clubs in salary arbitration disputes with their players.
MEAGAN LEGEAR Assistant General Counsel, Groupon
Meagan is Assistant General Counsel, Labor and Employment at Groupon. In her role, Ms. LeGear is responsible for all labor and employment issues in the U.S., Canada, India, Australia, and Japan, and manages Groupon’s U.S. immigration program. Ms. LeGear also is an adjunct professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law. Prior to working at Groupon, Ms. LeGear worked at Baker & McKenize in Chicago.
LORRIE V. LEONARD Associate General Counsel and Vice President, Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty North America
Lorrie is an Associate General Counsel & Chief Litigation Officer for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty. In that capacity, she leads a staff of professionals whose responsibilities include management of internal investigations, employee relations matters and litigation, vendor contracts, corporate litigation, real estate and claims for extra contractual liability. One of her major responsibilities include creating and implementing strategy to manage outside counsel spend while achieving the best result for the Company. Before joining AGCS, she was a practicing attorney at Baker & McKenzie in Chicago, and Foster, Swift, Collins and Smith in Lansing, Michigan. Formerly, Ms. Leonard was a member of the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyers’ Professional Liability and spoke at numerous Conferences on litigation management, conflicts of interest, and avoiding malpractice claims. Christine has extensive experience in M&A, including Ingredion’s 1.3 billion dollar global acquisition of National Starch LLC in 2010. She has managed legal matters for Ingredion’s operations in North America, South America, Asia-Pacific and EMEA, and has been involved in acquisitions, divestitures or strategic alliances in each region. LAURENT MASSON Vice-President, Global Commercial and IP Lead, Avanade Legal Group
Laurent joined the Avanade Legal Group in 2011 in Chicago as a Vice-President, Global Commercial and IP lead. In his role he also managed the North America and the APAC Legal teams. In 2012, he was appointed as Senior Vice-President and Deputy General Counsel. Prior to joining Avanade, Laurent worked for Microsoft between 2003 and 2011. In 2003, Laurent moved to Istanbul to build and manage the Microsoft Legal and Corporate Affairs department in the Middle East and Africa region (80 countries for Microsoft).
