It may be hard to believe (we've had spring for what, 2 weeks?) but summer is just around the corner. Here at Christ Church, that means we need to thank our teachers and recognize our graduates, and get ready to shift to some different offerings during June-July-August.

The Blessing of the Graduates will be on Sunday, May 19th. We'll definitely be celebrating our two high school grads, Emily Hasecke and Reilly Smith. If you or someone in your family is graduating, be sure to let Kelly Zeller know in the Church Office by Monday, May 13th, so your grad can be included in the bulletins that Sunday and recognized during worship. Email her at [email protected] or call the office at 937-323-8651.

We'll also say a special THANK YOU to our wonderful Children's Church leaders and Sunday School teachers on May 19th (the end of the traditional programming year). And don't worry—even though the Adult Forum and Sunday School classes will break for the summer, many exciting opportunities for learning, fellowship, and fun await! Dear people of Christ Church,

"Happy Easter!" It's entirely appropriate to say that until June 8th, because Easter is not a day but a season in the church year, lasting 50 days (from the Feast of the Resurrection until the Feast of Pentecost on June 9th). It was such an incredible joy to celebrate our Lord's great victory over the powers of evil and death with you all last month, and the joy continues! Some of you have inquired about the special blessing that Deacon Rick and I used to close the 10:00 AM service on Easter Sunday... those were the ancient words of the Exsultet, an "Easter Proclamation" that is traditionally sung at the beginning of an Easter Vigil service. Different versions of the Exsultet have been in use since the 6th century CE, and I thought these glorious verses were a fitting way to end our service on the holiest day of the year.

Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! O Universe, dance around God’s throne!

Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the victorious trumpet of salvation!

Rejoice, O earth, in glory, revealing the splendor of your creation,

radiant in the brightness of your triumphant King! Christ has conquered! Now his life and glory fill you!

Darkness vanishes for ever! Rejoice, O Mother Church! Exult in glory!

The risen Savior, our Lord of life, shines upon you! Let all God’s people sing and shout for joy.

What more can I say? Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Blessings & love, Rev. Maggie L-S : )

Worship… Offering meaningful, relevant, and welcoming worship in the Episcopal tradition for people of all ages.

GOT BAPTISM? The next opportunity for Holy Baptism at Christ Church will be the Feast of Pentecost on Sunday, June 9th. Baptism is available during both the 8:00 and 10:00 AM services. If you or someone in your family is considering baptism (or if you want

to know more), please contact Rev. Maggie before Memorial Day for pre-baptismal counseling and planning. Email her at [email protected] or call the Church Office (937-323-8651).

Bishop's Visitation On Sunday, May 5th, Bishop Kenneth Price will visit Christ Church. Bishop Price will preach and celebrate the Eucharist at the 10:00 am service, and will lead our Adult Forum discussion afterwards. {8-o-clockers, have no fear —we'll enjoy a special "Saul-to-Paul Fest" during our service that morning, as we hear and explore the story of his conversion (and resulting name-change) on the road to Damascus.}

Have you ever wanted to re-read a sermon that you heard one Sunday morning? Or listen to it again? Or perhaps you couldn't make it to church last week, but you'd love to know what was preached.... Most sermon texts are posted on the church website (ChristSpringfield.org) a day or two after they've been delivered. Sermon videos are often posted to our Facebook page as well, sometimes mere minutes after the service! You don't have to be "on" Facebook to watch these videos (or see any other parts of Christ Church's Facebook page). Just scroll to the bottom of the church website, click on the little blue f below "Find Us"—and voila! You're there!

Worship…continued

The next Taizé service will held at High Street United Methodist Church

on Sunday, May 19th at 5 PM. Taizé is a quiet, peaceful service of readings, songs, prayers, and candlelight. The name Taizé comes from an ecumenical religious community in France. After WWII, young adults from all over Europe flocked to it, looking for healing and reconciliation. To help these people of many different languages worship together, the monks of Taizé wrote simple, beautiful, moving chants, which are easily learned. Taizé continues to be a pilgrimage destination for young people—now from all over the world— and their simple, quiet worship is held all over the world, as well. Talk to Deacon Rick Incorvati if you have questions!

The "Big Read" Bible Study on Luke's Gospel will meet at Panera on Bechtle Ave. on Sundays May 5th, 12th and 19th at 4:00 PM. All are welcome! Talk to Rev. Maggie if you have questions ([email protected]).

Oakwood Village Worship: There are two opportunities to enjoy Holy Eucharist with our Oakwood Village friends this month—Thursday, May 2nd (commemoration of St. Athanasius) and Thursday, May 30th (Feast of the Ascension). Services are held in the Independent Living Chapel on the 2nd floor of the main building at 10:00 am. All are welcome! Regular Worship Notices • Books and other materials for

children are located in the back of the worship space.

• Gluten-free wafers are always available during communion.

• Myra Dean Banion offers private prayers at the Healing Station most Sundays.

SPECIAL EDUCATION EVENTS FOR ADULTS

English, not Latin: Translating the Bible into the

Common Language Please join us for a unique exhibit of 16th and 17th century English printed Bibles and a special presentation during the Adult Forum after the 10:00 service on May 12. With the coming of the Protestant Reformation, the 15th to 17th centuries were religiously tumultuous in England and Europe. Some of the struggle focused on whether it was appropriate for the Scriptures to be made available in the common language for all to read. This conflict was most evident in England, where during part of the 16th century it was illegal to translate the Scriptures into the English language from Latin. This exhibit and presentation will tell that story and recognize those who took great risks to make sure that all could read the Bible.

Mr. Lynn A. Brock of Cedarville University, who recently retired as Dean of Library Services after a fifty-year career at Cedarville, will lead the forum. He currently serves as the University Archivist and Special Collections Librarian. In addition to his work at the library, he served in a variety of roles at the University, including Director of Planning. He aided in planning and designing the current Centennial Library, opened in 1987, and the Center for Biblical and Theological Studies, opened in 2008.

Christ Church at Springfield Pride

Last June, I had the privilege of spending a few sunny hours hanging out at Springfield Pride on behalf of Christ Church. I prayed with folks, heard their stories, answered questions about the church, and gave out cards with Scripture verses affirming the worth and dignity of all God's children. It was a beautiful experience! Sadly, I won't be able to do the same this year (I'll be returning from Procter Camp that day). Springfield Pride will be on Saturday, June 22nd from noon to 4:30 PM on City Hall Plaza. If you would be willing to serve on a team of folks representing Christ Church at this year's Pride, please let me know! This is just one way to let Springfield know that Christ Episcopal Church is a safe and affirming space for all God's children, and that we really mean it when we say "There is a place for YOU at God's Table!"
