Göttingen University
Founded in 1737 by Georg II, Prince of Hannover and King of Great Britain and Ireland, to train civil servants for the German princedom
Nucleus of the university was a modern research library (founded 1734) in the spirit of the enlightenment, covering all known scientific fields from Europe of that time
Today among the highest-ranking universities in Germany with over 25,000 students, 12,000 employees, 431 professors
13 faculties (almost everything except engineering)

Making the transition towards Open Access: Principles at Göttingen
• Publications are more than just documentations of research output– symbolic capital for research assessment and reputation and career building– socially relevant output for academia and the public– cultural heritage
• Research and dissemination of results belong together (funds)
• Publications grow in discipline-specific cultures
• Most scholars want to focus on research and teaching, so when it comes to publishing they prefer the easiest way
• If institutions want to promote the transition to Open Access they need to understand the respective publishing cultures
• Good services and decent infrastructure help a lot
Author‘s dilemma (karma vs. career)
• Being a good scholar following principles of Research integrity (RI) e.g. the according publishing behaviour (sharing as much as possible, publishing negative results and unsexy findings) often brings limited reward to the individual author although the system in general does benefit extensively from RI and open access
• Aiming for the highest reputation puts authors into the position of playing scholarly roulette
• Most commercial publishers have no incentives to support RI but need to survive in a competitive market
• Authors need high-reputation journals for tenure, promotion and funding while most OA journals don‘t have such a standing yet
• Authors need reputation but also timely and reliable opportunities to publish and inform their peers

Different forms of Open Access
Primary publication (Golden road) Free access to primary source , usually with libre license
allowing further usage Publication in a genuine and quality-controlled Open
Access channel such as a journal, a book, an anthology „Gold Open Access“ covers the full value chain Funding on production side
Parallel publication (Green road) Free access to pre- or postprint or author‘s version Via subject-specific or institutional repositories Mostly organised and exercised by authors and their
institution Funding of media products in the toll-access paradigm,
funding of infrastructure via academia
Hybrid Open Access – Author pays fee to free
content from subscription barrier
Embargoed forms – moving wall for Gold OA, – license for delayed green

Production habits of HSS scholars
Reading habits of HSS scholars
Aspects of publishing in HSS
Books in Humanities, Arts and Social Science as the manifestation of „the long argument“, often highly specialised, in national languages and aiming at peers, thus small target groups (p2p communication)
publisher‘s reputation (reflected in being choosy) seen as symbol for high quality, thus quality of the actual product is connotated with quality of content
most HSS publishers with subject-specific publishing program and selling to small target groups
The majority of scholarly monographs requires subsidies
Established dissemination channels around the printed book (f.e. ISBN, Amazon, Google Books)
Printed books

Consulting and teaching
Developing publishing strategies in project proposals (in cooperation with research office), especially when funders require OA, fe.e. Horizon2020
Visiting faculty board meetings Visiting graduate schools Being present at university activities Hand outs and practical help
Publishing platforms: IR GoeScholar
Institutional repository for peer-reviewed publications (preprints, postprint or publisher‘s version) of UGOE scholars
GoeScholar team supports and runs upload service
Metadata indexed in international repository networks (f.e. BASE) and search engines (f.e. Google Scholar
ORCID and CRIS in preparation
