    Child Abuse and Its Effect on Child Development

    1. How do you feel knowing the normal developmental milestones for a childwill help you with your advocacy?

    The normal developmental milestones are very important to establish thechild behavior. Base on that information, I may understand what a child inthis age think and really need, from that set up the best advocacy for thechild

    2. Choose one of the age groups below and share what you learned abouthow maltreatment can affect their emotional development?

    Children from the age of 3-5 may be more likely to become victimsthemselves, attempt suicide, and scare everyone includes their relatives andfriends. Moreover, they are more likely to be aggressive and antisocialbehavior, depression and anxiety, and fear and withdrawal.

    3. Choose one of the age groups below and share what you learned abouthow maltreatment can affect their physical development?Birth-3 3-5 6-11 12-18

    Children from the age of 6-11may be more likely to experience difficulties inschool and score lower on assessments of verbal and cognitive skills, lackconflict resolution skills and hold pro-violent attitudes. They will be familiar withlonely at home, and do not want to hang out or play with others, includerelatives and friends.

    Domestic Violence and Its Impact on Children

    1. State 2 reasons why mothers stay with men who batter?

    Batterer has threatened to harm her or the children if she leaves or she lacksthe financial resources to support the children on her own

    2. What can often happen to children who come from violent homes?

    They are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; attempt suicide; becomevictims/batterers themselves

    3. As a GAL, what types of recommendations would you make for a child whohas been exposed to domestic violence? Recommendations for the parentwho is not the batterer?

    For the children, I would tell them about positive things outside, support themto hangout and make friends at school, guide them to pray and believe inthe good things in their future life.For the parent, I would advise them to think about their children first in everysituation, tell them about how domestic violence can affect their childrensemotional and physical development, from that they know how to supporttheir children in specific situation.

    Mothers who stay with men who batter typically may stay because she lacksthe financial resources to support the children on her own.

    Home is chaotic and unpredictable; communication is unclear; childsphysical and emotional needs often go unmet; the child experiences feelingsof guilt, shame and confusion; the child lives with fear and insecurity

    An individual experiences substance use, then personal substance abuseand then dependence and addiction

    3. As a GAL, what recommendations would you make for a child who has beenliving with a parent(s) who has a substance addiction? Whatrecommendations would you make for the parent(s)?

    For the children, I would advise them to think about positive things such asreading books, listening to the music, or hanging out, try to make thembelieve in life and good thingsFor the parent, I would tell them about how negative a substance addictionmay affect to their child

    Yes, they would. Because if the parents were in the first stage of the cycle substance use, it is easier to talk to them

    It is the right for all out-of-home-care youth the opportunity for normal growthand development

    2. As a GAL how can you support normalcy activities?

    I can provide the extra-curricular school activities, such as communityathletics, field trips, arts and music lessons.
