month undercover operation conducted by the sheriff’s office called Operation Pill Sweep.

Also arrested in Operation Pill Sweep recently were Al-vin Keith McKinney, of 65 Mill Run Rd., Mill Spring, and Marlon Shane Ruff, of 190 Ruff Acres, Mill Spring.

The sheriff’s office charged McKinney with felony manu-facturing a schedule VI con-trolled substance and posses-sion of growing paraphernalia, according to police reports.

Ruff was charged with sell-ing and delivering marijuana and maintaining a vehicle to deliver marijuana, according to reports.

Sheriff Hill said the operation continues and more arrests will be made over the next few weeks.

The operation has involved the N.C. State Bureau of Inves-tigation, the U.S. Veteran’s Af-fairs and the Buncombe County, N.C., and Spartanburg County, S.C. sheriff’s offices.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office estimates it has pur-chased approximately 2,000 illegal prescription pills during

the undercover operation over the past nine months. A total of more than 20 suspects are expected to be arrested.

Hill said charges relating to many other drugs besides il-legal prescription medications have been issued, including cocaine, heroin, opium and marijuana. A couple of suspects

have also been charged with child abuse, because of illegal transactions allegedly done in the presence of children, ac-cording to Hill.

McKinney was released on a written promise, Ruff was given $10,000 bond and Johnson was given a $500,000 bond, accord-ing to the sheriff’s office.

Getting summer on track with Tryon concert seriesSwayback Sisters perform FridaybyJessyTaylor

Under the lush trees of Rog-er’s Park, locals can yet again discover the perfect location to bring a picnic, sit back and relax to tunes offered up by a one-of-a-kind summer music experience.

Sponsored by local businesses and individuals, Summer Tracks is back for its 11th year - with good reason.

Peter Eisenbrown, who or-chestrates Summer Tracks, said the beautiful setting and profes-sional sounds make this event special each year.

“We’re so lucky to have this park in town,” Eisenbrown said. “We’ve put together six strong shows. So come on out, try to be generous and just have a good time.”

The array of musicians lined up for this edition kicks off on June 17 with Mark Bumgarner, warming up for the Swayback Sisters.

Bumgarner combines the folk rock timbre of the 60s and 70s with Americana and bluegrass. This year, Bumgarner will per-form with his wife, Aimee.

The Swayback Sisters nor-mally include “sisters” Lindsay Wojcik, Laura Blackley and Nik-ki Talley. Talley will be absent from the stage for this show and the group will instead be joined by Craig Larimer of Modo and Oso Rey of Soulgrass Rebellion. Organizers said each member is an accomplished artist on his or her own, so you can be sure the combined forces of this band are set to deliver a stunning musical encounter.

On the first of July, Rog-ers Park will present the Steel Wheels. This four-piece group has often been compared to such bands as the Avett Brothers and

• Summer Tracks(Continued from page 4)

Old Crow Medicine Show. In trying to convey their talent, Eisenbrown said, “They’re so good. They’ve really got it to make it big.”

July 15 brings the Nouveaux Honkies. If their name doesn’t grab your attention, their music certainly will, Eisenbrown said. Their coalescence of blues, swing and early country earned the group the honor of best roots music CD by the Palm Beach Post in Florida.

On July 29, Summer Tracks features another double show with The Carburetors and Tom Fisch. The Carburetors include Mark Warwick, Billy Munoz and Tryon’s own Jay Goree. These guys performed in Tryon on April Fool’s Day this year, so their music will undoubtedly be a familiar favorite.

Tom Fisch is a new addition to the Summer Tracks lineup. Fisch is capable of a diverse range of material, though his influence swings towards the warm style of John Prine or Doc Watson.

Gigi Dover and the Big Love take the stage on Aug.12 and they’re an established crowd pleaser at Summer Tracks con-certs. Though their music is predominately southern, they weave in reverberations of jazz, rock and R&B to produce a pi-quant sound that is described as shamelessly funky.

Bob Sinclair, who has been heard at the Blue Ridge Barbe-cue Festival in previous years, will follow them, merging jazz, country/swing, blues and ballads to close out the evening.

Last but not least, Summer Tracks will round off this year with The Firecracker Jazz Band, which is often called the “do not miss” band of the area. This eclectic six-piece ensemble will play on Sept. 2. The band has been a popular performer at Roger’s Park before and will likely attract a crowd again.

The shows begin at 7 p.m., rain or shine. Though admission is free, donations are greatly ap-preciated. Soft drinks, water and Giardini’s wood-fired pizza will be available for sale.

Carolina Camera Club meets Jan. 11The next meeting of the Caro-

lina Camera Club will be on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Isothermal Community Col-lege in Columbus.

Join the club for a presentation titled “Digital After Dark” pre-sented by Kevin Adams. Adams has been teaching and leading photo tours in North Carolina since the early 1990s and has produced several books that have become valuable tools to many local photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Today’s digital cameras give us the ability to make images that we could not have dreamed of back in the film days. Nowhere is this truer than with night pho-

tography. Now we can literally shoot for the stars.

For those who associate night photography only with subjects like fireworks, cityscapes, and street scenes, you’re in for a surprise. In this eye-opening presentation, Kevin will share his techniques for photographing a variety of nighttime subjects, from the ordinary to the “Wow, I never would have thought of that!”

Attendees are advised to use caution before attending this presentation, however. Once you see all the exciting things you can do with your camera at night, you might be losing a lot of sleep from then on.

Polk to give Saluda Medical Center $8,939 for EKG equipmentbyLeahJustice

The Polk County Board of Commissioners decided recently to lend a helping hand to the Saluda Medical Center by giving $8,939 to the center for new EKG equipment.

T h e n e w equipment will make it easier for patients to get on the table and the machine is tied to the computer for re-cords, according to Saluda City Administrator Erny Williams.

Williams said the old EKG ma-chine is 13 years old. The Saluda Medical Center saw 3,000 patients last year and he said the center simply needs the machine and it is no longer possible to receive fund-ing for the purchase from the state.

The money will be taken from the county’s economic develop-ment grants line item.

Commissioner Cindy Walker said she and her family have at-tended Saluda Medical Center since she moved to the area. She

said the first time she walked in she noticed posters that said patients were more important than money.

“If I needed to work out a pay-ment plan, they would work with me,” Walker said. “My health was more important than money.”

The Saluda Medical Cen-ter is a private, non-profit rural health center and medical fa-cility located at 86 Greenville Street. The cen-ter was created more than 30 years ago in re-

sponse to a lack of critical medical resources and physicians in the area and is the only rural health center in the area that receives state funding for services based upon a sliding fee scale, for which the uninsured can qualify.

Polk commissioners met Mon-day, June 6 at the Saluda School for the board’s second traveling meeting this year. The county is scheduled to travel to different areas of the county every three months.

“If I needed to work out a payment plan, they would work with me. My health was more important than money.”

Jesus said to his disciples, “The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.”

- John 14:26

In churches that follow the traditional Christian calendar, this past Sunday, June 12, was the Day of Pentecost. on that Sunday is celebrated the full power of god’s holy Spirit

come upon god’s people. next Sunday, June 19, is

Trinity Sunday when the doctrine of god as three-in-one; Father, Son and holy Spirit is commemorated. This week, all over the world, the nature of the divine Godhead is being contemplated.

now it is important to remember not all churches, which claim to be Christian, are trinitarian in their beliefs. And we need to be aware that in those churches which

tHe episCopaL CHurCH of tHe HoLy Cross

understanding faith in Holy Spirit

derive from western Roman roots there are significant differences of interpretation concerning the Trinity from churches whose roots are in the eastern traditions of Constantinople.

in the end, though, our human limitations of language and comprehension cannot conclusively know the manner of the interrelatedness of god the Father, God the Son and god the holy Spirit except through faith. In that effort to know we are less than ants contemplating einstein.

It is all really quite confusing, but there is a core message in what Jesus taught his disciples about the holy Spirit that we need to remember.

The holy Spirit is the divine presence in the world dwelling in each person who chooses to receive it. its

presence is given to us as the “paraclete,” which means one who consoles, comforts, encourages, helps and lifts up.

in the passage given above the nRSV translation uses the word “advocate” as descriptive of the intercessory nature of the divine presence between us and evil.

This is the same Spirit of God which moved over chaos and brought the created order of the universe into being (Genesis 1:1-7), that was given to moses and the hebrew elders (numbers 11:25), that filled and empowered the ancient prophets, and that came to mary the mother of Jesus (matthew 1:18-20, Luke 1:26-35).

For Christians who believe in the promises given by Jesus Christ, that this holy Spirit is

indwelling and empowering, to each one has been given this divine spark of God – all the time.

This presence of the holy one is our paraclete, our advocate, our empowerment to do what is right and good in the face of what is wrong and evil.

When we call on the holy Spirit to help us our prayer is that we will be opened to that which is already part of us, and that we will thereby listen to God’s voice and abide in God’s will.

therefore, the holy Spirit is not some disembodied spook floating around in the ether waiting to be summoned to our whim or need.

The holy Spirit is god’s gift of God’s very Self abiding in us as our helper and advocate. to that i can only say, “thanks be to God.”

"Professional Work at the best prices guaranteed!"

Construction of Foothills Hu-mane Society’s new multi-purpose pavilion is under way. This much-needed facility will provide a covered and fenced area to train and exercise the dogs, run classes and adoption events and hold vac-cination and microchip clinics for the public.

“All these activities have been canceled in inclement weather and holding them in unsecured areas has been a risk to animals who might accidentally escape,” said Foothills’ operations director Dot Moyer. “This facility will also provide a covered ‘meet-and-greet’ area for potential adopters and offer off-leash training opportunities.”

The new parking area adjoining the pavilion will allow the shelter to safely accommodate these popu-lar activities.

Foothills’ training coordinator Kayla Parish said she is excited about the new opportunities the pavilion will offer.

“Foothills can offer training classes and other educational op-portunities to the public, expand our very popular ‘100 Recyclable’ training program and allow us to follow up with adopters to continue the basic training we provide at the shelter,” said Parish. Basic train-ing of dogs greatly improves their adoptability, Parish also noted.

Phase II of the pavilion project, to be completed as funds are raised,

Current construction on the Foothills Humane Society pavilion. (photo submitted)

Foothills Humane Society breaks ground on pavilion

will enclose a section of the open air building to provide climate-controlled “meet and greet” train-ing and clinic areas.

To date, major donors for the project are the Polk County Com-munity Foundation and the Carol M. Wellman Trust. Funds to com-plete the pavilion are gratefully accepted and naming opportunities remain.

The “Buy a Brick, Raise the Roof” fundraiser offers donors a permanent opportunity to be part of the pavilion by purchasing an engraved paver brick for the en-trance patio for $50.

Foothills Humane Society is a North Carolina not-for-profit orga-nization started in 1957 to prevent animal abuse, to care and find homes for stray and abandoned animals, to promote responsible pet ownership and the prevention of overpopulation through spay/neuter programs in Polk County and northern Greenville and Spar-tanburg counties in South Carolina.

Foothills is working for a com-munity of No More Homeless Pets, and in 2010 achieved an overall live release rate of 98.7 percent of all animals.

The Saluda Center will hold its monthly community potluck Thursday, June 30 at 6 p.m. The entertainment will be provided by Jay Lichty.

Jay Lichty has been a musi-cian all his life. Whether it’s the banjo, guitar, mandolin, the uku-lele – as long as it’s got strings, you can find him playing it.

He has been a part of the lo-cal music scene for many years. In the early days, he was known for his banjo playing in bluegrass

bands. More recently, he could be seen on stage with Cat’s Eye Blue, the Jay Lichty Band and the Lone Derangers.

Now, as a solo performer, Lichty brings his own style of music to the spotlight. All of the instruments Lichty plays are all handcrafted by him.

All are welcome to bring your favorite dish and enjoy an evening of music.

AMENDED NOTICE OF FORECLOSURE SALE

10 SP 51Under and by virtue of the power

of sale contained in a certain Deed of Trust made by Edward M. White and Ella C. White to Mountain 1st Bank Organizers, LLC, Trustee(s), dated the 17th day of September, 2004, and recorded in Book 318, Page 1697, and Re-recorded in Book 320, Page 1524, in Polk County Registry, North Carolina, default having been made in the pay-ment of the note thereby secured by the said Deed of Trust and the undersigned, Substitute Trustee

Services, Inc. having been substi-tuted as Trustee in said Deed of Trust by an instrument duly recorded in the Office of the Register of Deeds of Polk County, North Carolina and the holder of the note evidencing said indebtedness having directed that the Deed of Trust be foreclosed, the undersigned Substitute Trustee will offer for sale at the courthouse door in the City of Columbus, Polk County, North Carolina, or the customary location designated for foreclosure sales, at 3:30 PM on June 28, 2011 and will sell to the highest bidder for cash the fol-lowing real estate situated in the County of Polk, North Carolina, and being more particularly described as follows:

Being all of that tract or parcel of land continuing 0.39 of an acre, more or less, as shown and delin-eated upon plat entitled “Anthony J. & Lorraine C. Lena, Tryon Twp., Polk Co. No. Car”, dated June 25, 1993, prepared by Butler Associ-ates, Registered Land Surveyor, bearing plat number 2203B, which plat is duly recorded in the Office of the Register of Deeds for Polk County, North Carolina, in Card File B at Page 1091, reference being made to said recorded plat for a full and complete metes and bounds description of said tract, pursuant to North Carolina General Statutes, Section 47-30(g). Together with improvements located thereon; said property being located at 21 Broadway Avenue, Tryon, North Carolina.

Trustee may, in the Trustee’s sole discretion, delay the sale for up to one hour as provided in NCGS §45-21.23.

Should the property be pur-chased by a third party, that party must pay the excise tax, as well as the court costs of Forty-Five Cents ($0.45) per One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) required by NCGS §7A-308(a)(1).

The property to be offered pursuant to this notice of sale is being offered for sale, transfer and conveyance “AS IS, WHERE IS.” Neither the Trustee nor the holder of the note secured by the deed of trust/security agreement, or both, being foreclosed, nor the officers, directors, attorneys, employees,

agents or authorized representative of either the Trustee or the holder of the note make any representation or warranty relating to the title or any physical, environmental, health or safety conditions existing in, on, at or relating to the property being offered for sale, and any and all responsibilities or liabilities aris-ing out of or in any way relating to any such condition expressly are disclaimed. Also, this property is being sold subject to all taxes, spe-cial assessments, and prior liens or encumbrances of record and any recorded releases. Said property is also being sold subject to ap-plicable Federal and State laws.

A cash deposit or cashier’s check (no personal checks) of five percent (5%) of the purchase price, or seven hundred fifty dollars ($750.00), whichever is greater, will be required at the time of the sale.

An order for possession of the property may be issued pursuant to G.S. 45-21.29 in favor of the purchaser and against the party or parties in possession by the clerk of superior court of the county in which the property is sold.

Any person who occupies the property pursuant to a rental agreement entered into or renewed on or after October 1, 2007, may after receiving the notice of sale, terminate the rental agreement upon 10 days’ written notice to the landlord. Upon termination of a rental agreement, the tenant is liable for rent due under the rental agreement prorated to the effective date of the termination.

If the trustee is unable to convey title to this property for any reason, the sole remedy of the purchaser is the return of the deposit. Reasons of such inability to convey include, but are not limited to, the filing of a bankruptcy petition prior to the confirmation of the sale and reinstatement of the loan without the knowledge of the trustee. If the validity of the sale is challenged by any party, the trustee, in their sole discretion, if they believe the chal-lenge to have merit, may request the court to declare the sale to be void and return the deposit. The pur-chaser will have no further remedy.

Life Outside

Four Wallsby Rob

McComas

Splashing away summer’s brutal heat wavesTubing

If you have been in the south very long you probably know what tubing is, if you are new to the area you may not.

Tubing is nothing more than taking an old inner tube from a car tire and floating down a river while sitting on it. I’m not sure who the visionary was that first came up with the idea of tubing, but it’s a blast. Tubing is as southern as it gets.

Depending on the river and water flow, you can enjoy a slow, relaxing float, taking in the sights and sounds, or you can bounce your way down the many rapid filled rivers in our area.

Some folks take an extra tube to carry a cooler on, but remember there is no alcohol allowed within 50 feet of the Green River.

Tubing is a big a t t r a c t i o n t h e s e days. Thousands of folks travel down our very own Green River each year. The nice thing nowadays is that it is much more convenient.

You can also find out the Tuxedo Hydro Station release schedule upstream of the Green River Cove by call-ing 1-800-829-5253.

Places such as the Silver Creek Campground do ev-erything from renting tubes (which are much nicer these days), to running shuttle buses for pick-ups and drop-offs, and keeping up with the water release schedules.

No more do you need to buy a pricey innertube to use once or twice, or take two vehicles to leave at the start and end points - now you just rent the tube for the trip and ride the shuttle bus.

Silver Creek Campground runs s ix days a week and Wednesday by appointment. They run 2½, 3½ and 4½ hour trips. They can be reached at 828-894-2331.

RaftingMy idea of rafting differs

from some folks. The ideal rafting trip to me involves

overcoming fea r and risking injury. I love the feeling right above a rapid when you think to yourself, “Uh oh, is this a good idea?”

No matter if you like a bouncy ride down the river or a risky one, WNC has

lots of options to choose from. The Nantaha la , French

Broad and Nolichucky rivers are some top names in our area.

The Nantahala is probably the most popular, with many outfitters running trips on the river. It offers rapids up to a class III and very cold water. The water coming from the bottom of Nantahala Lake upstream comes out of the discharge at a toasty 49 degrees year round! The river has a lot of rapids, but is a little tamer than I prefer. It is an excellent choice for first timers or fam-ily trips.

The Nolichucky, which is the favorite of my wife and me, offers some very good rapids up to class IV. It is a natural flowing river that is greatly influenced by rainfall. The outfitters there can tell you

the best (cfm or cubic feet per minute) flow for the best ride. Falling out of the boat is a real possibility. Guides in every boat help to ensure you run the right lines for the best ride.

KayakingYou can also kayak down

the Green River by visiting Green River Adventures in Saluda. This company provides professional kayaking instruc-t ion and guided inflatable kayak trips.

Green River Adventures of-fers two options including the Lower Green River Adventure, suitable for kids and those seeking a slower-paced ride, while the Upper Green River Rush involves a half-day of action on class III and class IV rapids.

These r iver and na ture guides also offer waterfall adventures around our area. Their website is www.green-riveradventures.com.

Transition Polk will be shown Thursday, June 30 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Polk County Public Library.

The movie is the recently completed documentary by film-maker and ECO director David Weintraub titled, “Code Blue: Water in the Mountains.”

Following the meeting there will be a discussion amongst the participants to establish means to maintaining water quality and how to help monitor local streams.

“Code Blue: Water in the Mountains” is about Transylvania

County and, according to Wein-traub, “Although Transylvania County is blessed to have many of its streams on protected land, there are many impacts from urbanization that require watch-dogs to provide some level of oversight. ECO is excited about working with county residents to develop a water monitoring program and provide training to interested volunteers.”

Organizers say that without pristine waters, the area will suffer not only aesthetically, but economically.

ECO is the Environmental

and Conservation Organization, headquartered in Hendersonville, N.C.

Organizers said, “We live in a breathtakingly beautiful corner of the world, but our streams are facing challenges. The better educated we are on our impact to our natural resources, the better stewards we can become.”
