Mrs. Stubbs now moves into other spheres of ministry in the church, especially pastoral care and counselling. We wish her well. A replacement superintendant will be announced soon.

On the sabbath day Paul and his companions went into the synagogue and sat down.

15 After the reading of the law and the

prophets, the officials of the synagogue sent them a message, saying, “Brothers, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, give it.”

So Paul stood up and with a gesture began to speak: “You Israelites, and others who fear God, listen.

17 The God of this people Israel chose our

ancestors and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm He led them out of it.

18 For about forty

years He put up with them in the wilderness. 19

After He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave them their land as an inheritance

20 for about four hundred fifty years. After that He gave them

judges until the time of the prophet Samuel. 21

Then they asked for a king; and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for forty years.

22 When He had removed him, He made

David their king. In His testimony about him He said, “I have found David, son of Jesse, to be a man after My heart, who will carry out all My wishes.”

23 Of this man’s posterity God has brought to Israel a Saviour,

Jesus, as He promised; 24

before His coming John had already proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 And as John was

finishing his work, he said, “What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. No, but one is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of the sandals on His feet.”

26 “My brothers, you descendants of Abraham's family, and others

who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.”

The time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 58

Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown His great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.

59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they

were going to name him Zechariah after his father. 60

But his mother said, “No; he is to be called John.”

61 They said to her, “None of your

relatives has this name.” 62

Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he wanted to give him.

63 He asked for a writing

tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And all of them were amazed. 64

Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God.

65 Fear came over all their neighbors, and all

these things were talked about throughout the entire hill country of Judea.

66 All who heard them pondered them and said, “What then will

this child become?” For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him. 67

Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has looked favourably on

His people and redeemed them. 69

He has raised up a mighty Saviour for us in the house of His servant David,

70 as He spoke through the mouth of

His holy prophets from of old, 71

that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.

72 Thus He has shown the

mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered His Holy covenant,

73 the oath that He swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us

74 that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve

Him without fear, 75

in holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.

76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for

you will go before the Lord to prepare His ways, 77

to give knowledge of salvation to His people by the forgiveness of their sins.

78 By the tender

mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, 79

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

80 The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the

wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.

10 Strategies For Fighting Discouragement

1. Allow for rest stops. Discouragement is often our body’s way of saying, “Stop! I need rest”. Try taking a nap or getting to bed a little earlier. It’s amazing how different things look in the light of morning (Exodus 34:21). 2. Get a new point of view. Take a few steps back and ask God to help you see His perspective on your situation. Often what seems to be an impossible mountain in our eyes is only a steppingstone in His (Isaiah 33:17). 3. Have patience. It’s easy to get discouraged when things don’t go the way you planned. But if you’ve committed your concerns to the Lord, you can be sure He is at work, even when you don’t see His hand (Romans 8:28). 4. Mingle. Discouragement feeds off isolation. Get out of the house! Go visit some friends. It’s amazing how good, old fashioned fellowship can lift our spirits and chase away the blues (Psalm 133:1). 5. Set the timer. Okay. So things aren’t so good. I’ve found it helpful to set the oven timer and allow ten minutes for a good cry. But when the buzzer sounds, I blow my nose, wipe my eyes, and surrender my situation to the Lord so I can move on (Ecclesiastes 3:4). 6. Love Yourself.

Make yourself loveable and stop turning people away because of self- righteous attitude (Luke 10:27) 7. Love the unlovable. Get outside your clique of friends and widen your circle of friends; yes, you need more friends so as to grow even more (Lk. 6:35), (Matt.5:44). 8. Arrest Anger. Look in the mirror; a genuine smile wipes ugliness out of your life. (Luke 5:22). 9. Get rid of obstacles.

Some people in our lives are leading us down the path of a miserable, corrupt and sinful life. Bosom friends can be dangerous to our growth. (Matt. 5:29-30). 10. Let perfection be your goal.

“I’m, only human” is too often used to justify our poor performance and is only a “feel good” cliché for discouragement. (Matt 5:48).

Shackled by a heavy burden, 'Neath a load of guilt and shame. Then the Hand of Jesus touched me, And now I am no longer the same.
