Learning has No Boundaries..!Dear MSU Member,

In this period of crisis and distress we all are floating on an iceberg which is melting everyday, it is time for us to analyze and accept the crisis and find appropriate solution to it. Being the education institution it is our liability to research and provide suitable options, suggestions and action plans for policy makers and society to deal with the melting situation. One thing which has not stopped or interrupted in this period is learning. We had workshops and webinars to discuss and learn to deal and be ready for the new normal. We are discovering and learning by and through new learning plaorms and I am happy to share that in our university all faculties have proved that there are no boundaries to learn and progress.

Let's not set our limits but stretch our limits to learn and achieve!

Vadodara… The very mention of the city brings to our mind an image of a city throbbing with a and culture treasuring a prolonged history, but it was given its present identity by its beloved king Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad-III. Several luminaries lived and worked in Vadodara, leaving their footprints for the generations to follow that included Swami Vivekananda, Maharshi Aurobindo, and Dr Ambedkar all of whom stayed in Vadodara during different phases of their life, and the common person connecting the trio is Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad-III. On December 28, 1881, Sayajirao was bestowed with the complete political rule of Vadodara when he was just 18. He reigned for 58 years and peormed his duties as a king of G a e k w a d S t a t e r e c e i v i n g

massive love and suppo of people. Like Gandhiji, Sayajirao worked in several domains of social life where education and eradication of untouchability were the two major strands. In a phase where even aer 72 years of Independence, we are trying to educate people with “Literacy Campaign” and trying to wipe out the stigma of a country with the highest number of the illiterate population, one is surprised to learn that before a century Sayajirao Gaekwad had implmented free and compulsory education in Vadodara State. Courageously, he had taken a bold step to penalize parents who did not send their children to the school for free and compulsory education! In those days, he had staed libraries in each village. Tirelessly, he put in a lot of effos for girl child education and adult education. He made enormous progress in each field he took up to upli. Such was the success of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad whose success has always lied in the people he had selected as he had brought each one with great caliber and then used to give them absolute freedom. The Maharaja himself took an interest in each depament, understood the practical problems of the officials and then helped them find out the solutions. As a result, we have an example of a king who was loved by all. Salute to Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad who was courageous, full of patriotic feelings and exceptionally wise!

The textile industries in India are considered as very impoant source of income and increases the economy upto several folds. Although industrial revolution has facilitated the humans to advance fuher for the last two centuries, aquatic contamination by industrial discharges has been one of t h e c r i t i c a l i s s u e s o f environmental concern. As the ser ies of processes proceeds in industries, the water comes into contact with harmful chemicals, heavy metals, inorganic wastes and even organic sludge. These are either dumped into rivers or other water bodies resulting in accumulation of high amount of industrial waste in them .The effluents released from textile industries are highly coloured due to the presence of dyes/pigments, detergents and suactants. As soon as these

effluents are released into any water body or receiving medium they ultimately deteriorates their quality and impose severe threat to inhabitants. The

effluents of industrial and commercial establishment posses threats to environment mainly in urban and semi urban areas. It becomes the source of pollution for suace and subsuace water, soil and air. The unplanned discharge of effluent degrades the quality of soi l , crop and environment and also affects human, animals and aquatic

life. Numerous tanneries, chemical plants, textile mills, distilleries, slaughterhouses, and hospitals prosper and flourish in a large number of industrial cities situated along the bank of the rivers where they cause pollution due to the discharge of untreated waste into it.

REMEDIATION OF INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENT: an aempt to clean environment

Industrial discharges are the major sources of aquatic pollution. Various types of pollutants are released into the environment directly (industrial outlets) or indirectly (domestic sewages) due to various anthropogenic activities which in turn may pose serious threat to human health depending upon the type of industry. Wastewater released from various industries has high concentration of organic pollutants, toxic components such as heavy metals, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), petrochemicals, phenolic components etc. They are released directly

into the aquatic medium which is harmful for surrounding water bodies, human health and aquatic life. Biomagnification takes place through food chain when industrial effluent containing heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Hg, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd etc.) reaches into the aquatic ecosystem. Progress in toxicology has advanced our knowledge regarding the excessive accumulation of heavy metals and their adverse impacts on human health including developmental retardation, cancer, kidney damage, endocrine disruption, immunological disorders (autoimmunity) and even death.

Harmful effect of Effluents on human health:

Since we all know that organic and inorganic pollution load is harmful for environment and human beings as well. There are several methods studied for the removal of pollutants from water body. Among various methods, Adsorption is a most acceptable method for removal of pollutants due to their cost effectiveness, economic viability, renewable capacity and ease of operation.

Year 2020, it’s one of the worst times for the human race on the face of eah; our world facing a Global Pandemic – the Novel Coronavirus causing a deadly disease Covid-19. The virus is said to be originated in Wuhan, China which gradually spread in all the pas of the world, affecting lives of people worldwide: the lives of people seems to be still with no future plans, economy facing their all-time low worse than any recession we humans have ever faced, regardless to region, religion, caste or colour, people dying either due to this deadly virus or by the economic hault causing lack of money for food, as they weren’t allowed to step out of their house anymore to earn the daily wages. Migrants are stuck away from their families and loved ones stranded to survive in these crucial scenarios. This is a time of GLOBAL LOCKDOWN!!

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times: Growing up to the famous quote from Tale of Cities by Charles Dickens, our generation got to experience such a situation Live.

With all these crises pushing mankind to an edge, seeking something positive may be of lile relief to look forward in learning a new lifestyle, to improving what we have been doing wrong and to cherish our good old memories. Government has asked everyone to stay inside, we are now smiling and celebrating again, families are no more seeking oppounities to spend time with each other. All this is happening inside our own roofs and we don’t need to search for venues anymore. Mother eah is slowly regaining the original beauty and health with such less pollution, the air is geing habitable again. It won’t be wrong if we say- “Our mother eah began to breathe again.”

Amidst these best and worst times, there are a group of people silently doing their duties –OUR CORONA WARRIORS!!! These worst times could be seen as best times only because of them, the doctors and other related healthcare service providers, the police personnel, the delivery agents of the essential items, the lab technicians – working day and night to provide the appropriate lab results, the Asha workers.

Coming from the Saffron ruled region of India –Gujarat, I experienced vast scenarios, wherein I got to know how the duty of Corona warriors directly impacted our life, even being locked in the house. In our day-to-day activities, we forget to think how much we are dependent on them, and forget to thank them.

With the rise in numbers of cases daily, the doctors have played a crucial role working day and night, staying away from home, risking their own lives, to save the nation. Gujarat being the second most severely hit area by Covid 19 with total cases being 6625, 1500 recovered cases, 4729 cases under treatment – we can imagine the plight of the doctors working all day and night round the clock, especially with the limited number of facilities in the medical depament, to control such a vast number of patients in an organized manner.

Let us not forget the lab personnel, working to the best of their capabilities, to test the patient samples, and delivering efficient results.

Coming to our police personnel, the population of Gujarat being 6.27Crores, and with the sudden introduction of lockdown, the strict amendment of rules have come as their responsibility.

The delivery agents provide timely service, the people deliver food and basic amenities to the migrant workers, the pilots flying down Indians stuck in different countries, the list of Corona warriors is endless, but motives are common: dedication to the country!.

Adding to the task, is the weather condition especially in Gujarat with average temperature of 45°C and our corona warriors working outside under hot sun, or covered in PPEs in hospitals.

Adding to this already difficult task are the group of people roaming aimlessly on roads, handling the uneducated crowd who thinks Covid-19 is just a distraction by the govt. from the recent political agendas. Handling the anger and rage of the so-called Well-to-do people with high connections; in spite of all this the work and control done by the police force is indeed remarkable.

The Asha workers, people deployed by the government like road cleaners, garbage pickers, cleaners-they too are doing their duties silently, risking their own lives.

Let’s not do it for ourselves, but out future generations, so when the cure or treatment of the disease is found, we do not go back to the world we have le behind, but a new World with good, new habits, with simple acts of Kindness and all the things we can do with the it.

The virus might be the worst ever for humanity, but let us make this the reason for a beer tomorrow. The Corona warriors are doing their best and risking their own lives, Let us all pledge to make this life woh saving!!

The work done by them can never be repaid, however, the government has been providing

facilities to compensate and ease out the work of the corona warriors. Let us not just clap, and shower them with flowers . We need to understand the sensitivity of the situation and comply with the guidelines laid out by the government and do our best to contribute in this fight for humanity. “New Untouchables” the term by which they are being referred;

The place they work, they need it tidy and clean;

But there is a number who use pebbles and Gaalis;

Here’s a lile tribute to the warriors these days,

They wear white; they don’t want people to wear it!

Only god knows how they go all those ways;

Some applaud with Thhaalis, Some respect them with Talis;

And some landlords, they want them to vacate their house!

They know that some hate em’ still they’re able to bear it;

They’re fighting for us; can’t meet their children and spouse;

But instead, by them only service is being rendered;

Then came some ignorants, they did things obscene;

Our warriors still treated them; we know that they did great!

They were there, they are there, they will be when needed,They would offer everything even though they bleeded;

A research, discovery can be a major coup;They will fight your pain; they just want trust from you,

The warriors, don’t hu them, if you cannot praise;

Some roamed without pants, demanded Bidis and cigaree,

Coz’ now is the time to know, how they go all those ways.

“New Untouchables” the term by which they are being referred;

The place they work, they need it tidy and clean;

But there is a number who use pebbles and Gaalis;

Here’s a lile tribute to the warriors these days,

They wear white; they don’t want people to wear it!

Only god knows how they go all those ways;

Some applaud with Thhaalis, Some respect them with Talis;

And some landlords, they want them to vacate their house!

They know that some hate em’ still they’re able to bear it;

They’re fighting for us; can’t meet their children and spouse;
