12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The St. Francis of Assisi community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

Pastor’s Morsels And Tidbits

Notes on the Scripture “Fear no one,” Jesus says. Not long after, he nuances this command: Fear only the one who can destroy the soul along with the body. Soul killing may sound esoteric, but it’s pretty common nowadays. At times it feels like some-one has murdered the soul of America while no one was looking. We are a nation shuddering in an environmental soup of crisis. We live in fear that’s stoked by every news crawl, renewed with each banner headline. And as Pope Francis points out, fear makes us cruel. The list of what folks around us live in dread of is long. White people fear what black people may do, and vice versa. The undocumented worker fears the citi-zen; just as the citizen blames the newcomer for his misfortunes. Native Amer-icans fear the destruction of land and water, the desecration of Mother Earth, which they hold to be their primary stewardship. Muslims (and those mistaken for Muslims because of their dress or speech) are wary of sudden violence or exclusion from the American story altogether. Blue-collar workers are hostile to professionals who appear to denigrate their contribution or forget them alto-gether. Business and church both fear government, with its power to legislate away their values These days, nearly all of us have been in conversations that end badly, be-cause of our deep divisions. There may be family members we don’t talk to, friends who don’t come around. I’ve sat at more than one table where some-one had to physically stand between two others to prevent an escalating con-flict. As I move around I hear people report how tired they are. I feel the same weariness, which comes from shifting anxiety from the front burner to the back every few hours. I’m reminded that Jesus not only says, “Fear no one,” but elsewhere he declares, “Fear is useless” (Luke 8:50, 1970 NAB translation). To which he appends the important dictum: “What is needed is faith.” Will the anxieties of this present season be enough to kill our souls, to rob us of the capacity for compassion or empathy? Will fear triumph over virtues like love, kindness, generosity, and biblical hospitality to the marginalized? Will “securing ours” prevail over the mandate for the common good, which assures everyone gets what they need? If what is needed is faith, then, O Lord, increase our faith! Solemnity of Peter and Paul, Apostles Peter and Paul might not have appreciated sharing a feast day. We mean to honor two giants of Christianity, without whom we might not have the church at all. But two more different men would be hard to find. Peter was a Galilean fisherman, impulsive, bull-headed, and rough around the edges. Paul was an educated man of the world, a Pharisee from outside Israel in territory that is now Turkey. These two met rarely and agreed even less frequently. But we value what they taught us about holding the center of orthodoxy (Peter) and pushing the frontier of the Holy Spirit (Paul).

Adult help needed at PADS For the past three years St. Francis Youth Ministry has been serving monthly at the PADS homeless shelter in Hinsdale. We set out the sleeping pads, blankets, pillows, and provide dinner. PADS also needs adults who can keep watch over night, and set out a cold break-fast in the morning. As minors, teens cannot fulfill this role. And, since it involves supervising adults, it needs to be done by other adults.

If you’d like to offer an evening please Contact Youth Ministry Coordinator Mat-

thew Toohill 708-460-0042 or [email protected]

Even though Father’s Day has passed and the Priests’ retirement collection taken, I would like to share some thoughts on these topics be-cause I think they are im-portant. I write after the tar-get dates, but I hope not too late to think about them. (The church review will continue July 9th.) Last Sunday was Father’s Day. First let me offer best wishes and prayers to all the fathers and all who exercise the role of father – grandfa-ther, godfather, stepfather and the many others who provide role models and as-sistance to children. While this day is primarily celebrat-ed with fathers who are alive and with us, it also provides an opportunity to pray for and think about our dads who have died. My father died 45 years ago. As the years have passed, I, of course, think about him over the course of the year, but in all candor, I do not re-member him daily. The pas-sage of time has that effect. Father’s Day provides an opportunity to pause and think about our lives together, the impact our dads have and had on us. Fr. Bill Zavaski, a close friend, preached at my dad’s funeral. I was only a few years ordained and didn’t think I could handle it. I don’t remember all Bill said, but one of the images he used stays with me. My dad was

most rectories provide a two room accommodation – bed-room, study and bathroom. Each retired priest receives a pension. If they retire in a diocesan facility part of their pension is given to the insti-tution; if they live on their own, they pay all living ex-penses. I chose to live in my own home, a town house in Eagle Ridge. The current St. Fran-cis of Assisi priest residence would be very tight for three. I also I felt, if I remained there, it would seem to be “my home,” which could be difficult for the new pastor. This arrangement has worked well. And Fr. Artur has been most gracious. This collection, and the mon-ey each parish is required to give to support retired priests, is used in different ways for the 99 priests over 80; 131 between 70 and 79 for designated expenses over and above their pension and social security. Most of these men continue to serve in ministry. A major expense is nursing home assistance; or full time in home assistance- $2,200,000. The PRMAA also pays the insurance to cover beyond Medicare and car insurance. These last two are a significant help. Just to know, a donation needed and well spent.

Edward Francis, the name I was given. Bill used the im-age of St. Francis to describe my dad. He said, like Fran-cis, he was a gentle and pa-tient man who rarely yelled. He was loyal (a White Sox fan till he died). He worked hard with little complaining. We all have memories of our dad – even though Father’s Day has passed and maybe our fathers have passed, we can use this event to recall the gifts they shared and look at what we have learned and how well we have internalized those values. The second was the collec-tion taken for the Priests re-tirement, of which I am a ben-eficiary. I and my fellow retir-ees are grateful for your sup-port. The PRMAA (Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association) does much for the priests of the Archdiocese and especially the retired priests. Some background: When a priest retires, he has the op-tion of remaining in the recto-ry where he served, moving to another rectory or a dioce-san retirement home, or a residence of his choice. If he chooses to remain in the rec-tory where he served, the new pastor has the right to accept. It is important to un-derstand that a rectory is more like an apartment house than a family home. Adult men, not related, usually of significant age differences need some private space so

flect if there is a tabernacle because this shows submis-sion, willingness to serve and love of Jesus. If you have physical limitations, show reverence through a bow or nod of the head. Please ar-rive before mass begins to minimize distractions. How would you dress at a wedding, a prom, or a ban-quet? You enter the greatest banquet of the King of Kings during mass. Appropriate dress is important because it makes a statement about how you value and respect our Eucharistic celebration. Reverence is also shown to liturgical items like the altar vessels, the bible, lectionary, etc. Finally, we show rever-ence to sacramentals or reli-gious items. “But I can enter your house because of your great love. I can worship in your holy tem-ple because of my reverence for you, Lord.” Psalm 5:8 Want more? CCC 1373-1383 Questions? [email protected]

Have Catholics lost reverence for the sacred? A Catholic Church is different from other Christian churches because bread and wine be-come the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus on our altar. Jesus is truly present in the tabernacle. Our church is a sacred place. Something sacred is set apart for the service or worship of God. It is highly valued and respect-ed. The most sacred parts of our church are the sanctuary where we find the altar and our 24-hour chapel where we have the tabernacle. “God commanded, ‘You shall…reverence my sanctuary.’” Lv 19:30 This is where we wor-ship God in private and com-munal prayer. We all need reminders to be silent in this space. Casual conversation should be done in the narthex or other rooms of the church. Enter the sanctuary and bless yourself with holy water from the baptismal font. Remem-ber your baptismal vow. Bow before the altar in reverence before you take a seat. Genu-

I’M GLAD YOU ASKED THAT QUESTION by, Sue Flanagan

THOUGHTS by, Pat Depcik

Trying something new that is a little challenging and out of your comfort zone may cause some trepidation. I experi-enced this a short time ago as I agreed to go kayaking. I really was fine with it but when the sign read, “Stay away from the water. Alliga-tors and snakes may be pre-sent.”, it put me in a different frame of mind. I must be cra-zy. Instructions were given and hubby and I would use a two seater with him in the rear. I had my “lucky” hat which has been all over the world but never really worn until now. As we pushed off into the water, it startled me as to just how far into the water these things set. Oh, this is not going to be my cup of tea, but too late, I’m in. I misunderstood the direc-tions that to turn right, you oar left. That didn’t make much sense to me until my hubby started yelling for me to quit fighting against him on the turns. Maybe it’s a left brain-right brain thing. So, when we hit the weeds and headed right smack into an oyster bed, I finally realized that hubby quit rowing be-cause I exhausted him. I was doing it on my own now and besides that’s what he gets for wobbling the kayak trying to get his camera out of his pocket. At any rate, I finally connect-ed with that kayak and be-came one with that kayak. Rowing became much easier now even as that big ship came toward us. As an afterthought, it remind-ed me of life. You start in the water not knowing what or how you will do. You get di-

rection but sometimes it’s not clear to you. You make mis-takes and wrong turns but eventually, you catch on and find your way especially if you have someone guiding you.

So, I’ll get back into that kay-ak if I have the chance be-cause I know that next time it’s going to be a lot better.

FEAR NOT

How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question addressed by today's scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that "reigned from Adam to Moses" (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal. Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear--"Do not be afraid!" The God who saved Jeremiah and the psalmist and Jesus is fully present to save us through the gracious gift of Jesus Christ. We have nothing and no one to fear.
