TODAY’S GAME: Tacoma at El Paso | PROBABLE STARTER: Game 1: RH Andrew Carraway (3-4, 4.52) Game 2: RH Jordan Pries (4-5, 2.65) Tacoma 3 runs, 5 hits, 2 errors El Paso 4 runs, 8 hits, 0 errors RECAP: The Rainiers scored 3 runs over the final 4 innings, but couldn’t overcome and early deficit as Tacoma lost to El Paso 3-4 on Friday night. DH Corey Hart (1x3, 2B, BB), 1B Justin Smoak (1x3, R, 2B, BB), 2B Nick Franklin (1x3, RBI, BB), 3B Gabriel Noriega (1x4) and C Humberto Quintero (1x4) each recorded 1 of the 5 Rainiers hits in the game. Starter Matt Palmer (5.2,7,3,3,3,4,HR) recorded his 5th loss of the season, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 5.2 innings. RH Chance Ruffin (1.0,1,1,1,1,0) allowed a run in the bottom of the 7th inning, while RH Stephen Kohlscheen (1.1,0,0,0,0,1) retired the final 4 batters in order to close out the game. OF NOTE: RH Jordan Pries has allowed only 4 runs over his last 3 starts (1.83 ERA /4 ER, 19.2 IP). Since April 30, Pries is 4-4 with a 2.41 ERA (18 ER, 67.1 IP) in his last 10 starts. During this stretch he has limited opponents to a .225 average (55x244) with 21 walks and 52 strikeouts. Overall this season with Tacoma, Pries has tossed at least 6.0 innings in 9 of his 13 starts, while allowed 1 run or less 8 times. Since allowing a 1 earned run (2 R) in 0.1 innings in his season debut on May 31, RH Todd Coffey (2-0-2, 0.96) has allowed only 3 hits and struck out 10 in 9.0 scoreless innings. Since June 1, INF Gabriel Noriega has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .328 (21x64) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 6 RBI, 2 walks and 1 stolen base. SMOAK ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT: 1B Justin Smoak began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on June 18. In 8 rehab starts with the Rainiers is he batting .233 (7x30) with 4 runs scored 3 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 4 walks. He was placed on 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad June 11 (retro to 6/10). Smoak had appeared in Seattle’s first 63 games of the season prior to missing the game on June 10. In 63 games, he is hitting .208 (45x216) with 26 runs, 12 doubles, 7 home runs and 29 RBI this season. HART ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Corey Hart began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on June 21. In 5 rehab starts with Tacoma, he is batting .300 (6x20) with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 RBI and 1 walk. Hart, 32, was removed from May 18 vs. the Minnesota Twins with a strained left hamstring. He was evaluated by Mariners Medical Director Dr. Edward Khalfayan the following day in Seattle, where he was diagnosed with a grade 2 hamstring strain. In 37 games this season Hart was batting .209 (29x139) with 5 doubles, 5 home runs and 17 RBI. He missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing a pair of knee surgeries. COACHING STAFF: Roy Howell is the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history. Howell is in his third season coaching in the Mariners organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short-season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02). Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is entering his 6th season with the Mariners organization, returns to the Rainiers after spending the last 3 seasons as the Mariners bullpen coach. Cory Snyder, who spent the last 3 seasons with Jackson, will serve as hitting coach. Tom Newberg and BJ Downie each return to Tacoma as part of the training staff, while Gabe Bourland will be the team’s performance coach.

RECAP: The Generals scored 5 runs combined in the 3rd and 4th innings, but allowed 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning as Jackson fell to Tennessee 5-6 on Friday night. CF Leon Landry (3x5, R, 2B, RBI) and DH Kevin Rivers (3x4, R) each recorded a team-high 3 hits, while RF Julio Morban (2x4) picked up the only other multi-hit game for the Generals. Rivers hit his 3rd home run with Jackson with a solo homer to lead off the 3rd inning. Starter Tyler Pike (2.0,2,2,2,5,1) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 2.0 innings, but did not factor into the decision. RH Forrest Snow (4.0,2,0,0,0,5) struck out 5 in 4.0 scorless innings and RH Stephen Shackleford (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) struck out 1 in a 1-2-3 9th inning. Since May 24, INF Jack Marder has hit safely in 20 of 25 games with 10 multi-hit efforts, batting .356 (32x90) with 16 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 12 RBI and 5 walks.
