This superbly illustrated work comprises two books in one: an all-color survey of aircraft development and an outline ofaviation technology with detailed technical line drawings. The historical survey takes the reader from the origins of flight, through the progress of the industry during the two World Wars to the latest in military and civil aircraft (as of publicationdate). The technicalogical survey goes back to first principles. It carefully and clearly explains the principles of flight andhow technical innovations in engines, frames, and navigational aids made aviation more and more efficient. Anintenational reference section details the specifications of 64 watershed aircraft in aviation history.

Phelan has created more than 400 superb paitings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticulous detail of theartist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allie and CentralPowers are showin in detail (top and side views, camouflage, national markings and pilots' decorations, engines, armament, and structure) and in combat as they were flown by the aces. This volume presents an unduplicated view of the1914-1918 war in the air, when man first captured control of the sky in order to control the ground.

The men of the American Volunteer Group, better known as the Flying Tigers, were a rare breed: men with the urge to getahead in life and to live that life to its utmost. The organization was born in an era of extreme international tension andwas bred in the midst of global war. Consequently, mystery still shrouds many of the facts that led to its founding. In thispages of this book you will meet the Flying Tigers: through photographs, most of which were taken by them in Burmaand China, and through their words, extracted from letters, diaries, interviews, and documents.

The subjects of this book are the black sheep that have embarrassed their builders, enraged their owners, and frightenedtheir pilots. In many cases, these are aircraft that should never have been built, and which are more starkly bizarre thanthe most deranged flights of fantasy. Such aircraft are mde ever so much worse simply by the fact that someone onceactually took them seriously. The aircraft included have been selected on the basis of their having utterly failed at theirintended role, or their having been built for an utterly ill-conceived task. Some of the selections were designed as beingvirtually impossible to get off the ground, while others were designed to be impossible to land.

Tells the story prmiarly of ambition and achievement, though it does not lack its follies and failures. The story it tells hasmany heroes and heroines, and there will be many more in the years to come. Equally, it could never have been told butfor the efforts of the unsung hundred of thousands of people who build and fly airplanes, be it for pleasure, profit, orsimply because it is their job to do so. This is their story, too.

The Jenny of WW I was a flying assemblage of engineering contradictions, achieved at a atime when aerodynamics wasin the diaper stage. During the nineteen months of American prticipation in WW I, more than eight thousand Jennys wereproduced: never in all the years before Jenny's first flight and preparations for WW I did America build so many airplanesof one kind. This informal history tells the saga of Jenny. From the end of WW I until late 1925 Jenny was the onlycivilian air vehicle around in quantity. She transported passengers and mail and barnstormed the country; she was a star atcounty fairs, where her owners performed suicidal acrobatics on her wings in midair to thrill the hicks. She wascantankerous and unpredicatble and, by today's standards, a hybird, a freak. But she flew - and by that miracle alonesupplied the first aeronautical nudges towards today's X-15, our missiles, and our space satellites.

The U. S. Navy's top figher ace in WW II, Medal of Honor recipient Capt. David McCampell, called the Grumman F6FHellcat "a wonderful weapon of war." Largely responsible for crushing Japanese airpower wherever the American fastcarrier force sailed, Hellcats were considered the most important allied aircraft in the Pacific during 1943 and 1944.Designed for speed, range, and climb to compete with Japan's exceptional Mitsubishi A6M Zero, they succeeded not onlyin engaging the "Zeke" on equal terms, but also in dictating the rules of combat. Fighters in every sense of the word, theHellcats were credited with destroying more than 5,000 Japanese aircraft, gaining outright air supremacy over the invasionbeaches, and helping ensure allied amphibious victories in the Central Pacific. Here is the fully story of the Hellcat - themen who built and tested it, the fighter squadrons that flew it, and the heroes it created. Written by the award-winningaviation historian Barrett Tillman and heavily illustrated with photos from the pilots' own collections, this spirited, carefully documented operational history pays tribute to the F6F and the men who helped win the war in the Pacific.

The Lady and the Tigers was published in September 1943, a year after Olga Greenlaw returned from her adventures inBurma and China. It wasn’t the first account of the American Volunteer Group—already famous as the FlyingTigers—but it was the first to be written by someone who was present at the creation. It was widely reviewed, thoughseldom with high praise, and it didn’t sell particularly well. After a brief flurry, it sank from sight.
Only later did we realize what a very useful book Olga had written. When I was researching the American VolunteerGroup in the 1980s, I annotated my copy of her book and referred to it often, as a framework for the events I was writingabout. It was one of the most useful references I had—far better, in fact, than most histories of the AVG, their authorscontent with piling new myths upon the wartime ones. This book is the first in the category of Classics of Aviation History. Originally published in 1978 as part of the FederalAviation Administration's multivolume narrative history series, it examines the forces that led to the enactment of the AirCommerce Act - civil aviation's legislative cornerstone - and relates how the federal government organized itself betwen1926 and 1938 to regulate and foster civil aviation's development.
The Smithsonian History of Aviation series includes works in three major categories:Smithsonian Studies in Aviation History (works that provide new and original knowledge);Classics of Aviation History (carefully selected out-of-print works that are considered essential scholarships); andContributions to Aviation History (previously unpublished documents, reports, symposia, and other materials).

The history of aviation is the history of daring men and fascinating machines; pioneers who charted unknown territory inan ear when men were beginning to look with envy at the soaring birds. "Command the Horizon" is the exciting accountof man in flight. It is the saga of a dauntless breed of men who broker ground where none had dared venture before. They were a group who in life and death made the dream of powered flight a reality. This book carries the story up toWW II. This is more than just an outstanding reference work. It is at the same time an exciting piece of literature, for theauthors have tried to make this as readable as possible, and they have succeeded.

From bird-men in chicken-feather wings to spacemen in capsules, this is the story of how man struggled and finallymanaged to get himself off the ground; to take off... and fly. John W. R. Taylor, editor of Jane's All the World's Aircraftand author of over 150 books on flying, vividly presents the personal side of the great adventure, from Leonardo daVinci's designs for a flapping-wing craft, de Lana's lighter-than-air craft, and Gusmao's Passarola of 1709, which appearsto have been the first successful "flying machine" in history. More than 200 illustrations, including rate photographs, convey the thrills and excitement of flying through the ages.

William S. Grooch's "From Crate to Clipper" is the only print biography of this man Time described as "the ablestflying-boat pilot on earth." The author, William Grooch, was a contemporary and close friend of Ed Musick. Upon herhusband's death, Cleo Musick requested the author write this biography and made available to him Musick's completefiles, including photos and log books. Interviews with family members, boyhood friends and fellow aviators helped makethis a very personal biography of its famously reticent subject, "that super-careful, monosyllabic antithesis of a grandstandflyer"[Time].

From Library JournalCarrying on in the style of Yeager , the General regales readers with entertaining tales of his post-military adventures, hishome life, and, most of all, his love of the outdoors. In fact, this entry belongs more in the hunting and fishing section thanin aviation history, since there are pages on mountain backpacking. The philosophy (expressed in the title) and personalmakeup of that younger fighter pilot are still evident, however. The remainder of the book is a description of his daily life, coping with what he wryly calls "the hero business" and what he sees as his obligation to his public. Yeager never heardof "the right stuff" before Tom Wolfe coined the term, but if personal style and confidence are part of that "stuff," Yeagercertainly has it. Mel D. Lane, Sacramento, Cal.Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

General Chuck Yeager, the greatest test pilot of them all -- the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound . . .the WorldWar II flying ace who shot down a Messerschmitt jet with a prop-driven P-51 Mustang . . .the hero who defined a certainquality that all hotshot fly-boys of the postwar era aimed to achieve: the right stuff.
Now Chuck Yeager tells his whole incredible life story with the same "wide-open, full throttle" approach that has markedhis astonishing career. What it was really like enaging in do-or-die dogfights over Nazi Europe. How after being shotover occupied France, Yeager somehow managed to escape. The amazing behind-the-scenes story of smashing the soundbarrier despite cracked ribs from a riding accident days before.
The entire story is here, in Yeager's own words, and in wondeful insights from his wife and those friends and colleagueswho have known him best. It is the personal and public story of a man who settled for nothing less than excellence, aone-of-a-kind portrait of a true American hero.

In the transcripts of actual transmissions between pilots and controllers just prior to crashes the grim scenario of mistakesleading to more mistakes is revealed. One pilot casually flies into known bad weather and bit by bit eliminates his optionfor escape; another becomes lost over the Caribbean and wanders helplessly as controllers try to assist her; and anotherdetermines that he will land at a fogged-in airport regardless of the danger.
These incidents carry vital lessons for pilots with all degrees of experience and skill. Readers will often discover that theyhave at times blundered as one of the pilots does in this book and will be grateful for the warning. Accompanied byexpert analyses of the errors and how to avoid them, these dialogues make for gripping reading.

The Bellanca C.F. marked the emergence of the first successful line of cabin monoplanes in the U.S. Designed and builtby Giuseppe M. Bellanca, it led directly to the famous Bellancas that spanned the globe and significantly advancedcommercial aviation. The C.F. was the most efficient airplane in existence at the time of its first flight in 1922, and itquickly attained an unbroken record of first-place wins at major air meets. Despite its lack of commercial success (onlyone prototype was built), the C.F.'s advanced configuration and amazing performance have assured it an important placein aviation history.

The Tin Goose, by virtue of its metallic construction, trio of powerful engines, commodious interior and enormous winghad the look of security and safety. With the FORD name on it public acceptance was assured. Overnight, it became themost sought-after transport for the struggling family of privately-owned airlines born in the 1920s and early '30s. Theplane could land in very small fields and could carry a good paylod of passengers and mail at speeds of 100 mph - fasterthan any other form of transport. This book tells the story of the "Tin Goose" in narrative form.

In this book the author shares a lifetime of experience - preventing emergencies (and getting out of the inevitable ones),improving flying skills, forming life-saving habits, handling everything from sudden squalls to FAA paperwork. Heshows you:*why 90% of all accidents aren't "accidental"*the two parts of "being ahead of the airplane"*how to use a checklist without letting it become a crutch*which gadgets really help and which are an unnecessary overload*how to cope with sensory illusions (your eyes don't always tell the truth)*how weather conditions affect you both inside and outside of your plane*and how to handle dozens of quick-decisions flying situations over land and sea.

This book is all about flying IFR in light airplanes. It wil be helpful to both the student of instrument flying and thepracticing instrument pilot because it begins where the FAA written and flight tests leave off - you are on your own, readyto explore and learn about the real world.
The exercises and common-sense suggestions that fill this book can make staying proficient an exhilarating experience. There are dozens of experiments to try with partial panel, showing which instruments you can substitue when the needarises. The book takes you through an actual IFR flight, from pre-flight on, covering communications, weather, and thechoice of alternatives. There are detailed chapters on the two most popular reasons to scrub an IFR flight: thunderstormsand ice. Night IFR flying is also discussed in full, and there is experienced advice on IFR emergencies.

The infinite variables of weather, terrain, pilot experience, surface conditions, and aircraft make it impossible to followone systematic set of takeoff and landing procedures. In this book, proven techniques and methods for safe and efficienttakeoff and landing maneuvers are reviewed for situations involving: mountain flying, night flying, short field, soft field, wet field, ice and snow, crosswinds, emergency and precautionary landings, and more. Special emphasis is placed onprecision and on safe practices that become important habits. Other subjects include a fresh look at the basics upon whichpilot competence is built: straight-and-level flight, turns, climbs and descents, torque and P-factor, angle of attack, glides, and the attitude of both the plane and its pilot.

A national hero, the Supermarine Spitfire has become the most recognizable icon of WWII for several generations ofBritons. From the throaty growl of its Rolls-Royce Merlin, or Griffon, to its beautifully tapered elliptical wings, theSpitfire isa true aeronautical thoroughbred. Regarded by many as the saviour of the Sceptred Isle "in its darkest hour," theSpitfire is without a doubt the most famous combat aircraft the world has ever seen. This lavishly illustrated volumeserves as a tribute to the magnificent fighter and the heroic "few" who flew the Spit in battle.

When introduced in 1940, the F4F Wildcat represented a great technological advance in aviation. by 1942, however, faster, tighter turning, better climbing opponents forced Wilcat pilots to devise new tactics to beat the odds. Exploitingthe Wildcat's strengths and the enemy's weaknesses, they won crucial battles at Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, andelswhere in the Pacific. In this dramatic WW II study of the U. S. Navy's famous fighter plane, award-winning aviationhistorian Barrett Tillman takes the F4F from factory floor into action against the Axis powers. Like his other successfulwarplane biographies, this book is filed with lively descriptions of combat, enhanced by the personal recollections ofWildcat pilots. While he focuses on the operational rather than the technical aspects, Tillman also provides design anddevelopment details, including information on such F4F variants as the British Martlet. Appendices offer fascinating factsabout aces, survivors, squadron designations, and more.
