Bell Ringer1.) Prepare your tables, you will need your notebooks and a pen or pencil

2.) Remember – READ your instructions for your stations and clean up for the next group before you rotate!

Objectives For Today:

•Today we are:

•Discussing properties of electromagnetic radiation: Reflection, Absorption, Transmission

RATLAB General rules:• Read the station rules at each table before beginning the

activity.

• Almost every station has something that CAN and probably WILL break if mistreated. • If you are careless with my equipment, you are signing yourself

up for my cleanup team. You will not only clean up your mess, you will be cleaning up the room after the lab either during lunch or after school.

• Place materials BACK IN THE BUCKET before you transition!

RATLAB General rules ctd:• I reserve the right to shut down the lab at any time.

• If too many individuals are not following lab safety rules and cannot be safe, we will pack up the lab and go through the notes one by one. This is material that you need to know – you dictate whether the process is in the form of notes or activities

Mayhem and breakage not permitted in RATLab

RATLAB Station 1• I made the sections go by tables. We will rotate

through the sections every 10 minutes.

• Station 1 is the Taleidoscope – Taleidoscopesare kaleidoscopes without the end covered.

• At the station, you will design your own pattern and identify how many different images the mirrors inside produce.

• SAFETY – this is a potential safety hazard, I will not allow unsafe students to be on it. Let this be your warning, there will be no others – DO NOT hang on it.

RATLAB Station 2

• Station 2 is the Kaleidoscope

• You will make your own kaleidoscopes and understand the relation between angles and images formed.

• SAFETY – this is a potential safety hazard, I will not allow unsafe students to participate. The mirrors can break, be careful. If one does, watch out for sharp edges and notify me please!

RATLAB Station 3

• Station 3 is the absorption of light through solids.

• You will be observing how black light absorbs into some objects and reflects off of others.

• One partner will be the “hider” the other will be the “seeker” – feel free to take turns!

Page 11: 07 08 waves and er day 7 8 rat lab

RATLAB Station 4

• Station 4 is a wave review station.

• You will be using wave generators to explain wave concepts and build vocabulary.

• You will be expected to draw and label the different types of waves, so if that isn’t in your notes, you might want to get that in there!

Page 12: 07 08 waves and er day 7 8 rat lab

RATLAB Station 5

• Station 5 is involves radiometers.

• Radiometers absorb infra-red rays and respond in an interesting way. You will be expected to give possible reasons for that reaction and there will be some reading.

• SAFETY: Radiometers are in glass bubbles. They are fragile. Leave them where they are, you don’t have to touch them!

Page 13: 07 08 waves and er day 7 8 rat lab

RATLAB Station 6

• Station 6 involves the transmission of light through a solid, and what affect that has on light.

• You will search for answers as to why these devices have the effect they do, and how prisms can be useful.

Page 14: 07 08 waves and er day 7 8 rat lab

RATLAB Station 7

• Station 7 involves an understanding of how radio waves are created and how they travel.

• You will communicate with your partner in morse code, and compete with other partners that will be using flashlights to transmit light messages.

• The flashlights are being compared to digital signals (definite on and off), the radio waves are being compared to analogsignals (less definite on and off, lots of background noise)
