Topotactic Replacement of Augite by Sodic Pyroxene

pyroxene. Sodic pyroxene also occurs as acicular crystalls

    in monom ineralic veins.

Sodic pyroxene compositions from eight rocks are plot-

ted in the acmite-jade ite-augi te ternary diagr am in Fig. 4

and four sodic pyrox ene analyses are sho wn in Table 1.

Sodic pyroxenes from the incipiently metamorphosed zone

have high acmite compon ents (generally over 50 ) and

are compositionally similar to the sodic pyroxenes from

the lawsonite zone metabasites. Conversely sodic pyroxenes

from the glaucophane-lawsonite zone metabasites show a

wider range of compositi ons (Fig. 4). A lack of omphacit ic

compositions is characteristic of all three metamorphic

    zones in the Tav~anh region.

The main chemical changes involved in the constant

volume replacement of augite by sodic pyroxene are an

increase in sodium and ferric iron, and a concomitant de-

crease in calcium and magnesium. For a specific case (sam-

    ple K48):

    100 g augi te + 9.44 g Na2 0 + 13.52 g Fe20 3 + 2.65 g SiO2

    +0.08 g A1203+0.38 g 02

    = 103.85 g sodic pyroxene (JdsAcs9Au33)+ 9.90 g CaO

    +11.88 g MgO+ 0. 59 g TiO z.

However, as the composition of the replacing sodic pyrox-

ene changes (Fig. 4), the chemical balance in the isovolume

    replacement is variable.
