L Y N C H S T R E E T G R A C E S T G L E N A R C A D E G L E N F E R R I E R O A D C H A R L E S S T R E E T H I L D A H I L D A L I N D A C R E S C E N T C R E S C E N T P O W E R S T R E E T T R A I N L I N E L I L Y D A L E / B E L G R A V E GLENFERRIE OVAL GRACE PARK SPECIFIC FEATURES Each feature has been given a number, and the location of each feature is indicated by the numbers on the plan below. 01 POWER STREET CROSSING • Provide shared path connection to Lennox Street beneath Power Street bridge if possible, otherwise improve crossing point on Power Street (subject to VicRoads approval). 02 GRACE PARK • Retain and restore heritage features. • Strengthen tree avenues with under plantings. • Create continuous path on northern edge with avenue planting. • Convert grass to warm season species to improve appearance of lawn areas during summer. • Install drip irrigation to garden beds and trees that are in need of additional watering to improve their health during drought conditions. • Update heritage assessment of Grace Park in regard to significance of vegetation and apply for appropriate heritage status. 03 PLAYGROUND • Upgrade existing local playground as an innovative play space providing a range of play experiences. 04 PICNIC FACILITIES • Provide picnic and BBQ facilities adjacent to playground. 05 REBOUND WALL & HALF COURT • Retain existing rebound wall and half court. 06 ROTUNDA • Provide rotunda for shade and shelter which is sympathetic in design to the heritage character of Grace Park. 18 LINDA CRESCENT • Remove existing on-street parking on south side of Linda Crescent between Glenferrie Road and Tuck Stand and widen path for pedestrians and cyclists and additional tree planting. 19 GLENFERRIE OVAL • Retain oval as an open grass area. • Remove existing tall boundary fences, provide lower boundary fence where a fence is required and encourage access by the community. • Use by Aquatic and Leisure Centre for activities and classes. • Use for cultural and community events (eg festivals, concerts, outdoor cinema). • Develop as a home for beginner level sport (eg. Auskick, Milo Cricket and Goal Kick). • Make available for casual bookings by schools without oval facilities. • Use as an overflow ground for amateur level Australian rules football when required. • Use as public open space when not in use for an organised activity. • Use for home ground and/or training venue for a tenant sporting club(s) provided the above community and sporting uses can be accommodated. • Provide historical interpretation of Hawthorn Football Club and other historical uses of the site. 20 RAILWAY UNDERPASS • Improve north-south connection under rail line by making existing underpass safer and easier to access for both pedestrians and cyclists (subject to Vic Track approval). 21 RAILWAY EMBANKMENT • Retain existing trees and terraces on south side of Glenferrie Oval and plant to create a large scale landscape feature (subject to Vic Track approval). • Plant indigenous trees along the edge of the rail corridor elsewhere to increase habitat and screen rail line. 22 LINDA CRESCENT CAR PARK • Provide shared path connection from Grace Street to Linda Crescent. • Provide improved pedestrian link from Glen Arcade to Glenferrie Oval. • Investigate reducing the number of vehicle cross overs on Linda Crescent associated with the car park to increase pedestrian priority on Linda Crescent. • Provide improved pedestrian path along the rear of the Glenferrie Road shops. • Upgrade existing pedestrian plaza between car park and oval. • Use signage to encourage motorists to use Grace Street to access the car park. • Overall decrease of approximately 21 car spaces. 23 AQUATIC & LEISURE CENTRE • Redevelop centre largely within current footprint to provide additional space for popular activities and for future demand. The final arrangement of buildings and pools in the redevelopment will be determined by a separate process. • Possible additional parking requirements associated with the redevelopment of the Aquatic & Leisure Centre will be given consideration once further details of the redevelopment are known. • Improve interface with Grace Street, Linda Crescent Car Park and Glenferrie Oval. • Provide cafe adjacent to Glenferrie Oval for use by centre patrons and general public. 24 PUBLIC TOILETS • Remove existing public toilet in Grace Street and replace with a new self-cleaning toilet with baby change facilities in Grace Street or in Aquatic & Leisure Centre. • Provide a new self-cleaning public toilet at north- east corner of Tuck Stand to cater for users of Glenferrie Oval and Grace Park, and on-site groups and clubs. 25 GRACE STREET • Retain as a two-way street. • Create enlarged pedestrian spaces at entry to precinct by widening footpaths. • Street to continue to be a focus for public art. • Restore original entry gates to this recreational precinct which date back to the early 1900’s. SPECIFIC FEATURES • Convert long-term parking into short-term parking for use by visitors to Glenferrie Oval and surrounding facilities. • Use part of car park to create a pedestrian plaza which would be used for recreational purposes when not in use as a car park. • Overall decrease of approximately 7 car spaces. 13 CARETAKERS COTTAGE • Consider using building as part of Council’s Eco Living Centre. If the building is not required for the Eco Living Centre, then demolish and use site for landscaping. 14 BAND HALL • Demolish and use site for car park and landscaping. • Relocate Hawthorn Band and Boroondara Brass Band to Tuck Stand or another location in the Hawthor area. 15 TUCK STAND • Stand to support uses proposed for Glenferrie Oval (see Item 19) including change and toilet facilities. • Provide rehearsal space for local bands (Hawthorn Band, Boroondara Brass and possibly Hawthorn Pipe Band) or find an alternative venue for these bands in the Hawthorn area. • Provide storage and meeting space for community groups. • Stand to be tenanted by a sporting club(s) provided other community, cultural and sporting uses can be accommodated. • Retain some tiered seating for viewing of events and activities on the oval. 16 WEIGHTLIFTING CENTRE • Retain and improve appearance and interface with surrounding area. • Provide better landscaped entrance to building facilitated by removal of Caretakers Cottage and Band Hall. • Investigate feasibility of incorporating Weightlifting Centre into the redevelopment of the Aquatic & Leisure Centre, so that when it reaches the end of its useful life expectancy, an alternative venue is available. 17 FERGUSON STAND • Demolish and lower ground level. • Establish an open space link between Glenferrie Oval and Grace Park as the primary objective for this site. • Expand the Community Garden into part of this site provided this does not compromise the open space link between Glenferrie Oval and Grace Park and the potential use of this space for water storage. 07 MAIN DRAIN • Enclose and cover part of main drain to increase usable open space area in Grace Park (subject to Melbourne Water approval). • Create a more naturalistic planted interface with the open sections of drain to reference the vegetated margin of the original Hawthorn Creek. 08 TENNIS CLUB • Provide better pedestrian entry from Grace Park. • Planting to edge of perimeter fence to improve interface with Grace Park. • Council to work with the tennis club to resolve land ownership arrangements. 09 TENNIS CLUB CAR PARK • Improve open space link along Hilda Crescent. • Remove existing car park entry and use Sports Ground Car Park entry to improve pedestrian and motorist safety. • Improve utilisation of car park by use of parking restrictions or parking permits to provide protected parking for tennis club when needed and allow general use of car park at other times. • Overall increase of approximately 18 car spaces. 10 RIFLE CLUB • Retain current layout of club facilities. • Improve appearance and interface with surrounding area. 11 COMMUNITY GARDEN • Expand into part of the area occupied by the Ferguson Stand provided this does not compromise the open space link between Glenferrie Oval and Grace Park and the potential use of this space for water storage.
