IDAHO’S GAS PRICES have paralleled U.S. prices over the past 12 years —sometimes rising above and sometimes dipping below the national average.Idaho in May had the ninth-highest gas prices in the nation. Because it lacksa pipeline, Idaho’s prices vary between regions, with the Treasure Valleytending to be more expensive than in Coeur d’Alene. Co-op deli backafter salmonella
The Boise Co-op’ssandwiches and saladsare for sale again with agreen light from theCentral District HealthDepartment, followingthe worst foodbornesalmonella outbreak inIdaho history. At least250 customers reportedsalmonella infectionsafter eating food fromthe Co-op’s deli, and theCo-op faces lawsuitsfrom customers. “We made sure thereis an even clearer sep-aration from our proteinpreparation station andour produce preparationstation,” said Mo Valko, marketing manager forthe co-op.
Chiropractoraccused ofmistreatment
Patients and theirfamily members com-plained since at least2009 about Boise chi-ropractor Laverle Bresh-ears. They accused himof misdiagnosing cancerand charging them forunnecessary treatments, among other things. Thestate chiropractic licens-ing board this year issued
a disciplinary action thattemporarily suspendsBreshears’ license, re-quires him to pass exam-inations and orders himto pay fines and prose-cution costs, among otherpunishments.
Breshears is appeal-ing the decision in statedistrict court.

Risch bill targetsport slowdowns
Idaho Sen. Jim Rischintroduced a bill inCongress that woulddefine slowdowns as anunfair labor practice —a response to the back-log of ships and contain-ers along the WestCoast during months-long contract negotia-tion between the In-ternational LongshoreandWarehouse Unionand port operators.
The port slowdownshave hurt Idaho expor-ters, especially in agricul-
ture sectors that wereforced to recall contain-ers of products that couldhave spoiled in portsbecause of delays causedby slowdowns.
Risch worked withPortland’s containerterminal operator on thebill. Many Idaho farmexports are shippedthroughWest Coastports, some starting fromthe port in Lewiston.
Hawks seekdevelopment
The Hawks’ newownership group, AgonSports and Entertain-ment, wants to build abaseball stadium projectwith hotels, restaurants, conference centers, office space and resi-dential housing. Agonhas built similar multi-use projects in FortWayne, Ind., and willsoon break ground on
another in Augusta, Ga.Local governments
have balked at pitchesto build a new stadiumfor years, in part be-cause developers we-ren't willing to chip inenough private funding.Agon hopes the largerproject will bring inenough private devel-opment money to avoidany need for a tax in-crease to pay for gov-ernment support.

Some Treasure Valley business lead-ers have strong opinions about what
kind of immigration reforms wouldmost benefit the Treasure Valley.
But as a group, respondentsto Business Insider’s
latest quarterly sur-vey are lukewarm
when assess-ing how
ur-
gently local businesses need reforms infederal policy dealing with undocu-mented workers. And they are tepidabout whether a new policy wouldenhance the local workforce.
Just one respondent says it is “highlyimportant” to allow more low-skilledworkers to immigrate to the TreasureValley. When it comes to skilled work-ers, two respondents say it is “highlyimportant.”
Only one of 11 respondents acknowl-edges having employed an undocu-mented worker.
In 2013, the U.S. Senate passed abipartisan immigration reform bill toprovide a path to citizenship for un-documented immigrants already livingin the U.S. The deal included provisionsfor border improvements, fast-tracked
permanent visa options for high-skilled immigrants and betterwork-visa options for low-skilledworkers, including farm laborers. The bill died in the House.
Meanwhile, a court has stalledPresident Barack Obama’s exec-utive order last year to shield nearly5million immigrants from deporta-
tion.Survey respondents
are nearly spliton
whether the Valley has enough U.S.citizens applying for positions requiringscience, technology, engineering andmath skills.
Zelda Geyer-Sylvia,president and CEO of BlueCross of Idaho, says a gov-ernment policy providingundocumented workers apath to citizenship wouldgive Valley companiesfirmer legal ground to standon.
“A comprehensive im-migration plan that includes a path tocitizenship will allow employers thepeace of mind needed to hire new em-ployees and possibly grow their work-
force,” she says.Immigration reform
could help combat theValley’s lack of ethnic di-versity, which hurts whenlocal companies try torecruit high-skill workersand businesses, says KarenAnn Meyer, a consultant
and serial technology entrepreneur.“We lose jobs to offshore workers all
the time,” Meyer says. “I know of a fewcompanies who could not find the soft-ware engineers they needed locally, sothey are using developers in other coun-tries to build their applications.”
Darrel Anderson, presi-dent and CEO of IdahoPower, says current im-migration policy hindersimmigrants’ ability to findwork in the Valley, which inturn hinders the local work-force.
“An efficient guest work-er program will provide an environ-ment where immigrant workers will

be available forgrowing TreasureValley business, which in turn willincrease capitalformation andcreate new taxrevenues for important stateand local government services,”Anderson says.
Politics clouds immigrationdiscussions, said Rob Perez, president and CEO of North-west Bank. The nation needs an
objective review of the costsand benefits of providing pathsof citizenship to undocumentedimmigrants, which isn’t whatwe’re getting from either Dem-ocrats or Republicans, he says.
“The battle for the ever-growing immigrant votes willplay a large role in a politicaldecision as opposed to makingthe right decision,” Perez says.

time and your money are—and that’s why we take

Solar is more AFFORDABLEthan you think! The experts at Auric Solar make going solar an

custom system is designed to maximize your
return on investment and save you money. And
with advances in solar technology, you will enjoy
a fixed, low monthly payment for your power
despite rising energy costs!
When it comes to solar, Idaho is one of the best places in the country
averaging over 5 hours of direct sunlight per day when clouds and snow are
taken into account. That means that there is a significant amount of solar
radiation available for use. Overall, Idaho has a great balance of sunlight for
production, precipitation to clean the panels, and temperatures to maintain
optimum production.
