A genetically engineered food (also known as a genetically modified organism, or GMO) is a plant ormeat product that has had its DNA artificially altered by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, orbacteria, to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is engineered in alaboratory, and is not found in nature. What foods are GMO?Currently commercialized GM crops in the U.S. include soy (94%), cotton (90%), canola (90%), sugarbeets (95%), corn (88%), Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%), as well as some zucchini and yellowsquash. Products derived from the GM crops mentioned above include, but notlimited to: • oils from soy, cotton, canola, and corn• soy protein, soy lecithin• cornstarch, corn syrup, and high fructose corn syrup• meat, eggs, and dairy products from animals that have eaten GM feed

(and the majority of feed is from GM corn and soy)• dairy products from cows injected with rbGH (a GM hormone)• food additives, enzymes, flavorings, and processing agents, including the sweetener aspar-tame and rennet used to make hard cheeses• honey and bee pollen that may have GM sources of pollenHow do I know if I’m eating genetically engineered food?You don't. Many of the processed foods we eat and feed our children have been genetically engi-neered, but we have no way of knowing which because these foods aren’t labeled. That is whyPamm Larry, the initial instigator of the campaign for GMO labeling, knew she had to take action.Proposition 37Earlier this year, a grassroots effort gathered 971,126 signatures statewide to bring the issue of label-ing GMOs to the voters. Those signatures have now been verified and it was officially announcedthat the California Right To Know Genetically Engineered Food Act will be on the ballot for theNovember 6 election as Proposition 37. The citizens of California will have the opportunity to casttheir vote for the right to know what is in the food they are eating.Polls conducted by various organizations in recent years have shown that approximately 90 percent ofCalifornians support labeling any genetically engineered foods. However, there are a lot of corpora-tions with big pockets that will likely be spinning the information in an attempt to stop this initiativefrom passing. So it is our goal to provide a series of articles to educate you, the voter, about GMOs. In addition tothis series, Jeffrey Smith, the leading consumer advocate promoting healthier non-GMO choices, willbe making a presentation on July 31 at 7 pm at The Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno, 2672 E.Alluvial Avenue (between Willow and Chestnut).For those who choose to get involved in spreading the facts about this important issue, Judy Nelson,organizer of the Central Valley group of volunteers, is the go-to person.
