12The body is a unit, though it ismade up of many parts; and thoughall its parts are many, they form onebody. So it is with Christ. 13For wewere all baptized by one Spirit into

one body whether Jews orGreeks, slave or freeand we wereall given the one Spirit to drink.

    1 Corinthians 1:9-10

9 God is faithful, by whom you werecalled into the fellowship of His Son,Jesus Christ our Lord. 10 I appeal to

you, brothers, by the name of our LordJesus Christ, that all of you agree, and

4 I always thank my God when I prayfor you, Philemon, 5 because I keephearing about your faith in the LordJesus and your love for all of Godspeople. 6 And I am praying that you

This Greek word koinonia is difficult

to translate. "Fellowship" means, formany, simply the enjoyment of the

    company of other Christians:

"sharing usually implies mutualgiving and receiving of material

things; "interchange" itself, usefulfor highlighting the way koinoniafunctions, seems a bit mechanical.

All are bound together in a mutual

bond that makes our much-prizedindividualism look shallow and petty.

    This fundamental meaning of

koinonia best explains its other uses, particularly that of "generosity" or

"almsgiving ... Christians give to oneanother because they belong to oneanother. (N.T. Wright)
