Grammar Fixer: aDverbsin this Grammar Fixer we are going to talk about adverbs and where they go in a sentence.

an adverb is a word that describes a verb (he sings loudly), an adjective (very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly), or even a whole sentence (Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella). There are lots of types of adverbs, and they can go in different places in a sentence.

WhaT are aDverbs?

aDverbs oF Time

These adverbs answer questions like When is it?

Examples include today, just, recently, now, ago, soon and so on.

Most adverbs of time are happiest at the beginning or end of a sentence.

I went to the zoo. I’m going to the cinema. → I went to the zoo yesterday. Today I’m going to the cinema.

Some adverbs of time can go before the main verb (especially recently) and a couple of weirdos (especially just) almost always go there.

I recently went to Dubai. I just got back.

These adverbs answer questions like Where is it?

Examples include here, everywhere, outside, upstairs, away and so on.

in sentences where there is an object, the adverb goes after the object.

We saw beetles. → Where were the beetles? → We saw beetles everywhere.

in sentences with no object, the adverb goes after the main verb.

She went. → Where did she go? → She went outside.

aDverbs oF Place

These give information about how something is done. Most of them end in -ly, but there are exceptions. Examples include slowly, quickly, sadly, fast and hard.

They can modify a verb or a whole sentence.

if they modify a verb, they can go either after the subject, after the verb or at the end of the sentence.

The cat dozed in the sunshine. → The cat lazily dozed in the sunshine. The cat dozed lazily in the sunshine. The cat dozed in the sunshine lazily.

if they modify a whole sentence. They are most commonly placed at the beginning of the sentence, but separated by commas.

The doctor is busy. → Unfortunately, the doctor is busy.

aDverbs oF manner (= způSobu)

These explain the level or intensity of a verb, adjective, or even another adverb.

Examples include almost, quite, nearly, too, enough, simply, so and very.

They always go before the word they modify.

He is tall. He is two metres tall. → He is extremely tall. He is nearly two metres tall.

aDverbs oF DeGree (= Míry)

NOTE an adverb of manner cannot be put between a verb and its direct object (He quickly ate the cake or he ate the cake quickly, but not He ate quickly the cake.).

each of these sentences is connected to the article “a new age of ai.”

look at the adverbs next to each of the sentences. check that you understand them. Decide which ones are adverbs of time (T), degree (D) and manner (m), then use the rules in the Fixer to decide where the adverb can go (in some cases, more than one position is possible).

When you have finished, find similar sentences in the article “new age of ai” to check your answers.

add one adverb to each sentence. You can use examples from the Fixer or think of your own.

PlaceWhen the bell rang for the end of the lesson, the whole class ran.

i heard a scared voice say, “There’s something moving.”

Time“i don’t know where she is now, but i saw her.”

He will come to meet you.

DegreeThe ground was wet, and i slipped.

it smelled sweet.

mannerThey sat on the ground.

She whispered.

Frequency“i don’t come here,” she said.

it comes back.

a storyWhen you have finished, write a story that includes one sentence from each group. you don’t have to use them in order, you can add as many extra sentences as you like, and you can change the adverbs, too.

These adverbs answer questions like How often? Examples include never, always, rarely, sometimes, and normally.

They are usually (yes, usually is another one) placed before the main verb.

note: The exception is when the main verb is to be, in which case the adverb goes after the main verb.

She is always late. She always comes late.

Just can be an adverb of degree or an adverb of time – with very different meanings. as an adverb of degree, it means only: I eat meat, but just on Sundays. as an adverb of time, it means very, very recently: I’ve just finished my homework.

With hard there are two adverb forms: hard and hardly. They are both adverbs of manner but they have very different meanings. Hard means not softly, not gently: I kicked the ball hard. it usually goes at the end of a sentence. Hardly means almost not at all: I hardly kicked the ball. means I only touched it. it goes before the main verb.

The basics

answers go across (left to right) or down (top to bottom), starting in the numbered square for that clue. The numbers in brackets tell you how many letters are in the answer. (3, 3) means the answer is two 3-letter words, (2–3) means it is two hyphenated words. use one letter per square. Do NoT use any spaces or hyphens in the answers (for example, “tip-top shape” would be written “tiptopshape”).

Every answer in this puzzle is in the april 2019 issue of Gate. The clues often contain a hint about where in the magazine you might find the answer. read through all the clues before you start. Some are easier than others. Try working as a team. you have 30 answers to find so working together is probably the best way to do it. use a pencil so you can correct any mistakes. if two answers don’t fit together, one of them must be wrong.

Tell students that they are going to read and listen to six stories. Three of them are real stories and three of them are fake. Their job is to decide which is which. Divide the class into six groups and assign each group a story. Students should fill in their section of Handout 1b and discuss whether they think the story is true or false. What evidence do they have to support their opinions?

Encourage them to use the modals of probability from the previous handout. Then put the students into new groups of six, each group containing one student from each of the previous groups. Students ask and answer questions to complete the rest of their handout and should take a vote at the end to decide which three stories are true and which three false. reveal the answers to the class.

Have them check their answers with a partner and then play again. Check the answers as a class. Then put the students into groups of four and discuss which story they think is real, and which one made-up. again, encourage them to use the modal verbs. Finally take a class vote and reveal which is the true story.

There are extra activities for early finishers (handouts 1F–1h).

For homework, ask students to research april Fool’s Day news stories and write about their favourite one on Handout 1E.
