VisionAn inclusive society free from discrimination where persons with disabilities

become contributing members, living with dignity and respect.

MissionTo empower visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people through developmental initiatives focusing on educational, social, economic, cultural

and technological aspects.

The year 2020 at Samarthanam has begun with new projects being launched for women empowerment, opening of the National Head Quarters for Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) and the 23rd Anniversary of Samarthanam with a promise to extend the organization’s services to various geographies and expand its reach.

Women empowerment is one of the major focus areas at Samarthanam and in this regards, a beauty and tailoring unit has been inaugurated at Samarthanam. The training unit will help the women to learn and practice in these fields and consecutively help in finding employment as part of vocational training.

This quarter, Samarthanam has been honored with the Rotary Karnataka CSR Award for the category CSR Implementation Excellence in Skill Development and Livelihoods. Samarthanam’s Skill development programmes are spread across 13 cities of India focusing on improving the employability among the disabled. In this sector, we appreciate the recognition from Rotary and for acknowledging our efforts. We are also thankful to The Times of India Sports Awards jury, who nominated the Indian Blind Cricket team as the “Team of the Year,” which comes as a great encouragement.

We are currently living in uncertain times with the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus that has greatly affected the nation and the world. The number of people succumbing to the deadly virus is increasing each day across the world. The pandemic reached India in the Month of January and has been spreading rampantly without any barrier. To control the pandemic, Government has announced a 21-day lockdown across the country. Due to which, people with disabilities and those dependent on everyday wages are unable to make their ends meet. Samarthanam, with a greater responsibility to aid to the disability sector, initiated “Samarthanam COVID Rescue Relief Services.”

Samarthanam has brought together certain medical and food essentials for the poor, marginalized, daily wage workers, senior citizens and the disabled, who are unable to step out during the lockdown. While we are currently serving a few sections of the society in Bengaluru, we hope to extend our reach to other cities where Samarthanam has its presence.

There is an absolute need to stand together in these difficult times. We need to follow the safety measures as directed by the health experts and the Government. During the lockdown period, in case of any emergency as faced by the people with disabilities and the poor, Samarthanam’s Relief team will be ready to offer assistance.

Let us fight against the Coronavirus pandemic together and express our solidarity as a nation.

Gangadhara is an ambitious individual who always wanted to stand on his own and seek financial independence. A hearing impaired person from a farming family in Karnataka, because of his family’s economic status he was unable to pursue higher education. Though Gangadhara had a strong desire to study and prepare for competitive exams, his family’s financial instability could not support his dreams.

Gangadhara had come across the Skilling Programme at Samarthanam Ballari and heard about their training modules. He struggled a lot with communication in English as he had studied in a local medium school. He had difficulty in understanding Computers and reading English, which are essential prerequisites for preparing for competitive exams and interviews. Though he had the knowledge, he lacked the confidence to face an interviewer and speak fluently. He enrolled for Samarthanam’s 3 month training course and began to build his skill sets with the objective of finding employment.

In three months Gangadhara improved his basic Computers, MS-Office, Communication Skills, Soft Skills, and Typing. He thanks Samarthanam’s training for improving his self confidence and communication skills. He secured a job as Customer Support Executive and is independently taking care of his family. He dedicates the credit to Samarthanam and says that the timely intervention of Samarthanam has helped him transform his life and gave it a new direction.

SUNADHA

Balasubramanyam is a versatile singer of the Sunadha Troupe. Hailing from Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, he developed an interest for singing at an early age. While performing in 2014 at a regional programme on Suvarna Channel, he was noticed by Samarthanam and was invited to be part of the art and culture troupe. Balasubramanyam has received free training from Samarthanam in the areas of music and computer skills. He has traveled across the US and UK as part of Samarthanam’s performances. We are constantly amazed at the way our visually impaired beneficiaries communicate with music. While he sings during special events, he has also honed in the skills to be part of the Business Process Outsourcing unit of Samarthanam.

Samarthanam is constantly working to motivate our artists and seeing our disabled artists perform well helps remove the disability barrier and create good artists and well rounded individuals.
