Dear EIHA-members,dear sponsors and partners, dear experts on hemp fibres, shives, seeds and oil, dear experts on natural fibres, dear speakers, dear exhibitors, dear moderators, dear participants, interested in new applications of Hemp raw material,

welcome at the Rheinforum in Wesseling, our new venue, to the 6th International Conference of the European Industrial HempAssociation (EIHA). For the sixth time, the nova-Institut has organised this conference on behalf of EIHA, and we are parti-cularly pleased to welcome almost 120 participants from 31 countries. You have made this conference the biggest event onindustrial hemp worldwide and the best place to find out about the latest developments in the hemp sector and to associatewith new an existing contacts.

Because of the growing number of participants, we had to leave the previous venue of the conference, the EuroMedia hotelin Huerth, and find a new setting, not a mere congress hotel, but a locality to remember for all participants. We hope that youlike the new location, which carries a lot of symbolic power. The conference takes place in the “Rheinforum”, a former fac-tory building converted with support from Brussels. It is situated in Weeseling, an important site fort the chemical and pla-stics industries in Germany.

Listening to the presentations at the conference, the audience is sitting with the old town of Wesseling behind them. To theright and to the left are chemical refineries characterising the present economy based on crude oil. Directly in front of themis the Rhine, one of the largest and most important rivers in Europe. And opposite, only separated by the river, lies a naturereserve area as symbol of a new “green economy”. But the chemical and the plastics industries are also increasingly acces-sible to biobased raw materials (biorefineries) and to hemp fibres as reinforcement for (bio-)plastics.

Apart from this unique setting, even more reasons caused us to choose this location: The atmospheric “Hotel am Rhein” inclose proximity to the venue accomodates about half of the participants, while the “Rheinforum” itself offers ample networ-king opportunities.

Networking & CommunicationSince many of the participants meet only once a year – that is to say: at the EIHA conference – we have made sure that thenew venue makes communication, meetings and networking as easy as possible:

■We have furnished the main room at the “Rheinforum” in such a way that participants can sit in a semicircle, thus hopingto keep alive the vivid discussions form previous conferences

■Anyone who’d like to sit together with other experts will find the “Empore” (gallery) upstairs from the lecture hall, withcomfortable red leather armchairs for relaxed conversiations

■Adjecent to the gallery ist the room “Rheinblick”, where workshops with about 20 participants are offered parallel to the pre-sentations (see insert). This was a suggestion from several participants at last year’s event, which we were happy to take up.

Proceedings of theConference? All presentations will be availableonline after the conference – butonly for EIHA members! Join EIHAfor only 200 € / year and you’llgain access to the presentationsof this and all previous confe-rences. EIHA members have access to one of the largest data-bases with information on indu-strial hemp, with presently morethan 300 documents. Join EIHAand support the hemp industry inEurope and worldwide!

The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) – www.eiha.orgEIHA has formed itself as an association of Regular members, the Hemp primary processing companies within the EU and As-sociate members who are associations, national organisations, companies and individuals working in the field of Hemp or othernatural fibres. Founded in 2005 EIHA today has 9 regular and over 60 associated members from 30 different countries.

EIHA was formed originally to give members a voice at the European Commission in Brussels. It has grown quickly into a re-spected Organisation that is an excellent bank of information and a real support to the fast developing Hemp Industry. Eachannual EIHA conference allows members and non members alike to exchange views and important developments with theircolleagues.

Don’t worry – join EIHA!■ All questions about Hemp business are passed on to the relevant EIHA members■ The entrance fee to EIHA conferences is reduced by 50%■ Instant access to more than 300 presentations, studies and statistical data■ You will be part of a network of important international Hemp actors:■ More than 60 companies, associations, institutes and individuals are already supporting EIHA!■ Support the networking, lobbying and publishing of information on Hemp by EIHA!■ You will be supporting the environmentally conscious Hemp Industry!

Only members of EIHA have access to all presentations of this and previous conferences.

■ Further opportunities for exchange and communication are offered by our small exhibition directly in front of the lecturehall as well as

■ the “Plaza” between the “Hotel am Rhein” and the “Rheinforum”. Facing the Rhine and the nature reserve area, you mayenjoy a good cup of coffee here and – provided the weather gods are with us – the spring sun. This is an ideal spot also forsmokers.

■We shouldn’t forget the evening buffet on the first evening of the conference, which takes place in the “Rheinforum” at20:00. It will last well into the night – following european custom – and offer ample opportunity for exchange. The cost forthe evening buffet is included in the conference fee – except for the drinks. The water on the tables is included, but wemust ask you to pay for all other drinks. This is necessary in order to keep the conference fee modest.

We’d like to thank our sponsors and partners. Their networks have very considerably contributed to the success of this con-ference. We are particularly pleased that the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) is increasingly linked up with theHemp Industries Association (HIA) from the USA and the Canadian Hemp Trade Alliance.

We hope that all speakers and participants will gain new insights, have a constructive exchange of ideas, intensive discussi-ons and will gain new business contacts and, above all, a multitude of inspirations for new projects and products in the hempsector.

If you enjoy the new venue and time (we have changed the conference date from grey November to sunny May), we’d love tosee you again at this very place in the year 2010. Any suggestions are always welcome!

Biowerkstoffe sind Werkstoffe, die vollständig oder in relevantem Maße auf Agrarrohstoffen oder Holz ba-sieren. Dazu zählen u.a.
