Refuse to Get Revenge 1 Peter 2:13–25

1. Submission...1 Peter 2:13-1813 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to

every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, 14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.

15 For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men.

Page 19: 09 07 refuse to get revenge 1 peter 2 19–25

Refuse to Get Revenge 1 Peter 2:13–25

1. Submission...1 Peter 2:13-18 cont16 Live as free men, but do not use your

freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. 17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.

18 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

Page 20: 09 07 refuse to get revenge 1 peter 2 19–25

1. Submission....Paul also refers to it in Rom 13:1-6Submission ...Is never easy

esp in Peter’s time Emperor Nero 54-68 ADslaves to masters ...

It goes again ‘human nature’More so in ‘post-modernism

society...

1. Submission to GodYet Peter wrote ... even commanded ...

v13 Submit yourselves FOR THE LORD'S SAKE...

to every authority instituted among men

v15 For IT IS GOD'S WILL ...

So it is not just SUBMISSION

BUT SUBMISSION TO GOD ...

1. Submission to GodHow then are we to LIVE ?

or How will a LIFE SUBMITTED TO GOD look like ?

V16 Live as free men ...

Live as servants of God ...

Christian Life of “Paradox”

1. Submission to Goda LIFE lived in SUBMISSION TO GOD ...

Show proper RESPECT (honor) to everyone

LOVE (agape) the brotherhood of believers

FEAR God

HONOR the king

2. Suffering...1 Peter 2:18-2418 Slaves, submit yourselves to your masters with all

respect, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh.

19 For it is commendable if a man bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because he is conscious of God.

20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

Page 25: 09 07 refuse to get revenge 1 peter 2 19–25

2. Suffering ...1 Peter 2:18-2421 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for

you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.“ 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.

2. Suffering for GodReasons for Suffering :

1. Fallen World2. Fallen Man3. ‘Righteous’ Suffering Doing what’s right Doing God’s Will / Obeying God Defending the Faith

2. Suffering for God

“God whispers to us in our pleasures,

speaks in our conscience,

but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

2. Suffering for God“It's sometimes only through suffering that

we begin to listen to God. Our natural pride and self-confidence have to be stripped painfully away and we become aware, perhaps for the first time, of our own personal needs.

Through the unexpected diagnosis of cancer I was forced to consider carefully my priorities in life and to make some necessary adjustments.

I STILL DO NOT KNOW WHY GOD ALLOWED IT, NOR DOES IT BOTHER ME. BUT, I AM BEGINNING TO HEAR WHAT GOD IS SAYING, AND THIS HAS BEEN ENORMOUSLY HELPFUL TO ME."

Page 30: 09 07 refuse to get revenge 1 peter 2 19–25

2. Suffering for GodStatement :Is God All Good ?Is God All Powerful ?Question:

If God is all good & all powerful – why can’t He just remove suffering ?Is it because He’s not all powerful so cannot do it ! ORHe’s not all good and do not want to do it !

Shepherding by God1 Peter 2:21-25To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

3. Shepherding by God1 Peter 2:21V21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered

for you, leaving you an example, that you should FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS.

We are called to follow ChristPaul also declares in 1 Cor 11:1Follow my example, as I follow the example of

Christ. John 5:19 “...the Son can do nothing by himself; he

can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."

23 When they hurled their insults at him, he (JESUS) did not retaliate; when he (JESUS) suffered, he (JESUS) made no threats. Instead, he (JESUS) entrusted himself to him (GOD THE FATHER) who judges justly.

Even Jesus the Son entrusted himself to God the Father.

How much more we need to do so

God’s Word...

2 Tim 3:12In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

1 Peter 4:12-1312 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, ...

Page 41: 09 07 refuse to get revenge 1 peter 2 19–25

God’s Word...James 1:2-4

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Page 42: 09 07 refuse to get revenge 1 peter 2 19–25

AND IT CAME TO PASS...Q: "In your time of discouragement, what is your favourite Scripture?" "The Lord is my

shepherd, I shall not want" Psa 23:1.

"God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" Psa 46:1

"In this world you shall have tribulations, but be

of good cheer, I have overcome this world"

John 16:33-35.

“And it came to pass...”

Rom 12:18-2118 If it is possible, as far as it depends

on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 DO NOT TAKE REVENGE, my friends,

but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "IT IS MINE TO AVENGE; I WILL REPAY,“ SAYS THE LORD.

Rom 12:18-2120 On the contrary: "If your enemy is

hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

the Answer Psalms 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills —where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the Lord ,the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip —he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israelwill neither slumber nor sleep.

Conclusion

Heb 13:20-2120 May the God of peace, who through the

blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,

21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
