What’s Involved in Evangelizing?

Knowing and living in light of the big picture is important if you want to experience all that God desires for you in this crazy and confusing world we live in. It gives you a proper orientation to live now because it shows where you came from and where you are going if you are in Christ. It also shows you what is most important from God’s perspective and how everything fits together in light of the gospel.

The Big Picture

Jesus Gospel Church Mission

Mission Goal Purpose

Bringing glory to Jesus and the Father Expanding the Kingdom of God Making disciples of all nation

Proclaiming the Gospel

The GospelThe Gospel is the good news about Jesus. That through His sinless life, sacrificial death on the cross and resurrection He has restored the reign and rule of God over all creation and made it possible for us to be reconciled to God and live with Him forever if we turn from our sinful rebellion back to God and place our trust in Jesus and all He did to deal with our sin and the judgment we deserve.

Last Time – Why Evangelize?

Main Reason – Because of Jesus Because of what He has done for you Because of His love for you Because He tells you to

Today – What’s Involved in Evangelizing?

EvangelismCommunicating the good news of Jesus Christ and calling people to be reconciled to God through Him by means of repentance and faith.

2 Corinthians 5:20 (NIV)We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Mark 1:14-15 (NKJ)Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

Our Mission

When Jesus was on the earth He told His disciples what their mission was. All four of the gospel writers wrote down what Jesus commanded them, and all disciples after them, to go and do. Taken together like pieces of a puzzle the four commissions give us a clear picture of what our mission is for Jesus.

Mark 16:15 (NKJ)And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

Where does Jesus tell them to go? Into all the world. He gives them a mission, the word mission comes from a Latin word meaning “to send”. We are to share the gospel with all those in our world- family, friends, colleagues and those God puts across our path.

Acts 1:8 (see Luke 24:48-49) (NLT)But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

We can’t be witnesses without the Holy Spirit. We are to tell people about Jesus! Where are we suppose to tell people about Jesus? Everywhere! In Bucureşti, Romania, Hungary and to the ends of the earth. The Jews hated Samarians but Jesus told them to go share the gospel with them. In Romania the equivalent would be the gypsies.

John 20:21 (NLT)Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

How was Jesus sent? He gave up His rights, His home, His life as He knew it and was sent as a missionary to ungrateful people. Jesus obeyed the Father and depended on the Holy Spirit to accomplish the mission the Father gave Him.

Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT)Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Jesus was given all authority therefore we should obey Him. The goal is not just to share the gospel but to make mature disciples who will make other disciples.

Baptizing- symbolizes our union with Christ; death to the old life and being risen to new life in Christ. You should be baptized if you have repented and placed your faith in Jesus.

We are to teach these new disciples to obey all the commands Jesus has given us. What were some of the main things Jesus commanded us to do? To make disciples, to remain in Him and to love one another as He loved us.

Jesus ends with an encouragement. He will be with us to the end. Implies that all He said applies to all those who would be His disciples throughout history.

Summary of our MissionWe are to go out like Jesus did, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and proclaim the gospel about Jesus and make disciples of all those who repent and put their faith in Jesus.

What God Gives Us to Help Us in Evangelizing1. Holy Spirit – need for prayer2. Bible – need for study3. Church – need for fellowship

Evangelizing without the Holy Spirit is like trying to use a computer without any power. If we need the Holy Spirit then we need to pray for every aspect of our evangelizing. Praying according to the Bible is a very powerful and effective way to pray.

We need to study the Bible our whole life so that we are continually growing in our understanding of the gospel for our own lives and so that we are able to better communicate and explain it to others. Bible Gospel Jesus

The church is not a physical building but a spiritual one with each one of us being a spiritual stone. The Greek word for church is Ekklesia which means called out ones or assembly. Each one of us has spiritual gifts for the building up of the body of Christ and that includes being equipped to share the gospel.

Just like a family we need each other; we need fellowship in order for our evangelism to be fruitful. Koinonia is the Greek word for fellowship. It does not just mean being together but doing together to accomplish God’s will.

What’s Involved for Us in Evangelizing?1. Living the gospel2. Proclaiming the gospel3. Defending the gospel4. Sharing your testimony5. Making disciples

Living the Gospel

Living the gospel is simply living a life grounded and focused on the gospel and letting it sink deep into your heart and then having it come out and impact every area of your life becoming who God says you already are in Christ.

Matthew 5:13-14 (NKJ)You are the salt of the earth...You are the light of the world.

1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

Proclaiming the Gospel

Proclaiming the gospel is one forgiven sinner telling other sinners how they can obtain forgiveness.

Mark 16:15 (NKJ)And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.

Defending the Gospel

Defending the gospel involves answering questions, dealing with objections and clarifying issues in order to bring unbelievers to a recognition of the truth of the gospel so they will repent and put their faith in Jesus.

Acts 18:4 (NKJ)And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.

Sharing Your Testimony

It is your story of how you came to be a follower of Jesus because of what He did for you.

Luke 8:38-39 (NKJ)Now the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Making Disciples

As was said earlier the end result is not just to proclaim the gospel but to make disciples who follow Jesus obeying everything He said to do and in the process becoming more and more like Jesus loving God and people and are also making more disciples.

Matthew 4:19-20 (NKJ)Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Matthew 28:19 (NLT)…go and make disciples of all the nations,

Reflection Questions What stood out to you about what’s involved in evangelism and why? What would help you to be better equipped to evangelize?

Grow Deep – a Disciple of Jesus Lives Life on Mission1. Stop making excuses for not evangelizing!2. Recognize & repent of your sin and unbelief and your desire to live a comfortable life now.3. Take up your cross, die to self and live for Jesus.4. Pray according to Matthew 9:37-38* and say “Lord, send me!”5. Realize that there are people everywhere in need of Jesus.6. Don’t let fear or anything else stop you.7. Get to know Jesus and the gospel better and meditate on His love for you.8. Then take steps of faith and begin sharing the gospel with people.

* Matthew 9:37-38 (NIV)Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

In Closing – Romans 10:11-15 & Isaiah 52:7

Romans 10:11-15 (NLT)As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say,

Isaiah 52:7 (NIV)
