February 28, 2014 Dear Parent or Guardian: As we continue with the second half of the school year, it’s amazing to look back on all of the learning that has occurred. Conferences provided a great opportunity for students to communicate and share their learning with you. Thank you for taking time to meet with your child’s teacher. We are proud to acknowledge that while the students of Prairieview School continuing to learn, so do the teachers. We believe that in order for our students to continue to grow, the teachers need to continue their learning. Throughout the year staff members have participated in various professional development opportunities by attending staff development meetings and professional conferences. They have extended their own learning by participating in trainings and several staff members have also shared their learning with others by presenting at conferences and internal meetings. Many of the opportunities have been provided during our staff meetings and institute days. We have also been very fortunate to attend further professional development workshops sponsored by our Regional Office of Education. All of these workshops provide wonderful opportunities for our staff to share their expertise, enhance their instructional program and assist your children as they learn. During the mornings of March 4 th through March 14 th we will be giving students in 3 rd and 4 th grades the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). The results of this state-required assessment will be reported to you on the School Report Card in the fall. Our School Improvement Planning team will review these results along with information from our local assessments to help us improve our school program. In addition, you will receive information about your child’s performance on the state tests. You can help your child do his or her best on the test by: 1. Making sure, if possible, that your child attends school on the days of testing 2. Making sure you child gets a good night’s sleep the evening prior to testing 3. Providing breakfast on the mornings of testing 4. Reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if he or she does not understand the test directions 5. Letting your child know that you have confidence in his or her ability to do his or her best 6. Advising your child not to worry about the test, but just to do his or her best Please contact your child’s teacher or the school office if you want additional information or have further questions about these tests. We look forward to sharing the ISAT results with you this fall. Sinceramente, Vince Murray

Engaging Presentations..... -The Study of BUGS and Other Awesome Creepy Crawlies!

The science of entomology is alive (literally) and changing every day. Entomologists have the opportunity to work on solutions to protect human health whether it is fighting the battle against mosquitoes that transmit disease, protection of honey bee health or the crops that feed the billions of humans across the world. Entomology is an exciting, relevant and essential science. If you’ve never heard of it- now’s the time to learn! -Fibonacci Fun!!

Did you know that flowers, trees, hurricanes, and pine cones can do math?!?! Come learn about a simple sequence of numbers that show up all throughout nature, but more importantly, find out why!

-Water Wonders

Don't be afraid to get your feet wet, join us as we wade into the wonders of water in our world. This session includes a kid-friendly presentation and hands-on experiment. Quench your thirst for answers to questions like: What is one thing that all living things need? Or, How much water is on Earth today compared to dinosaur times? Or even, what is full of holes but can still hold water? What runs but never walks? Come find out at Water Wonders.

-Magnificent Magnets

Magnets can do much more than just hold your artwork to the refrigerator. Come test your strength against different magnets. Explore how electricity can make a magnet, and how a magnet can make electricity. See a magnet float in the air, and act like a spring. Try to guess the strange things the magnet will do next. You'll even learn how to make a working motor using a battery, a magnet, and a piece of wire -Crazy Cool Chemical Changes

Chemistry is happening all around us! Come learn the difference between physical and chemical changes in a hands-on, discovery based style where all children will be engaged in experimenting!

YOU ARE NEEDED! Dear PV Parent, Does your child love Discovery Day? Bookfair? Movie Night? Field trips? Birthday Breakfast? These are just a few of the programs your Pairieview PTO provides. But we are in trouble. Because of a lack of volunteers (not a lack of funding!), we are considering dropping these programs for next year and scaling them down this year. Many hands make light work; so if we all give a little our children will gain A LOT! If you are interested in keeping these programs in place for your Pairieview students, we need YOUR help. Please contact Tina Coleman at tinaxcoleman@ yahoo.com or 847-641-0473 TODAY. SIGN UP NOW! Give this to your child’s teacher or leave it in the office. ______________ _______________ ________________ Your Name Your Phone Your Email
