The past year has been an exciting and successful time at all levels of NZ Young Farmers, and it has been a privilege of mine to be able to chair the National Board during this time.

NZ Young Farmers continues to be seen and recognised throughout the industry as a positive, vibrant and successful organisation, particularly at a time when there has been a lot of negativity throughout the Primary Industry.

It’s a testament to the strength of our members that we have continued to remain true to what makes NZ Young Farmers so great – a fun-filled environment which provides great opportunities for members and celebrates success.

Every year it’s remarkable to see the success that our clubs have with amazing events, remarkable membership growth, and the great contributions they make to their local communities. Some of the successes at a national level for the organisation over the past 12 months include the notable growth of TeenAg membership which exceeded 110% year on year, the implementation and success of the initiatives under the Red Meat Profit Partnership, a successful Grand Final and Conference at Taupo in July, and of course, the initiatives that have been delivered under the organisations Strategic Plan.

This year marks the first year under the new Strategic Plan for the organisation which outlines the vision and key strategic objectives of NZ Young Farmers. The Board and National office have been focused on delivering against the No.1 priority of the strategic plan which is delivering value to members.

Often members are faced with the question, “What does $70 give me for my membership?”.

Our priority this year has been to deliver greater tangible benefits to members to complement the numerous intangible benefits members gain. This has seen new initiatives introduced such as the membership fee disbursement to clubs and regions distributing value throughout the organisation, the introduction of a 48 page Muster News publication dedicated to NZ Young Farmers, rolling out the membership handbook, and the beginning of the CRM upgrade designed to allow the organisation to deliver greater value in future.

Part of the implementation of the strategic plan saw the first National Roadshow for a number of years, which allowed members the opportunity to meet and discuss the direction of the organisation with representatives from the Board, National Office, and Contest Management Committee. The event was a positive move for member engagement, and saw over 230 members attending the events around the country. Part of the success of this event will come back to follow up, and will see this become a regular event over each 24 month window.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the true heroes of our organisation, the volunteers who put such a significant amount of their time into organising events, partaking in the competitions, and running the number of clubs throughout the country. I would also like to thank the number of supporters of NZ Young Farmers, including the sponsors and industry stakeholders, who continue to invest in the people and initiatives within our organisation. Lastly I would like to thank Terry and the staff of NZ Young Farmers, who all dedicate so much of their energy to making NZ Young Farmers as successful as it can be.

Enjoy the successful things our organisation is involved in, and I look forward to seeing many great things to come in the year ahead.

It has been a very satisfying and strong performance for the year ending 30 September 2015 in terms of financial results as well as solidifying the strategy which is going to ensure the stability of the oganisation for the next 10 years.

The team at National Office have been working hard to align the three major business units of Operations (membership and pipeline of networks), Business Development (project work undertaken on behalf of industry), and Events & Marketing (Contest and publications) into a one team approach which sees all elements and people working together to achieve an overarching purpose of attracting, developing, and retaining talented people in the primary industries. For our members this includes ensuring we are offering value and the benefits of belonging to NZ Young Farmers; for industry it is showing we are showcasing career opportunities and making an impact in getting more talented people to consider our industry first when deciding what subjects to take at school; and for the wider community it’s adding richness to the social fabric of rural society through our combined community engagement and support. From a financial perspective, we recorded a surplus of $220,000, which adds a little more protection to the organisation if we lose a major sponsor or industry project funder. Whilst not all of this is cash, it is very pleasing to show a net assets position of $843,809 compared to $149,458 just two years earlier. The most noticeable development for this year is the shift in focus away from the ANZ Bank.

As one of our major partners, the mutually agreed decision saw them transition from the Contest at the end of the 2015 season and to focus their priorities into supporting our extension activities. This will see the launch of developmental scholarships, the growth and development of the Rural Business Network, and assisting us with leadership development activity in 2016.

Message from CEO

The Contest has been rebranded as the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, and we have already seen changes to the structure and format in 2016. I would like to thank the Board for its support in developing a lasting strategy, focusing on Health and Safety reform within our organisation, and showing a real commitment to bridging the gap between manage-ment and members. Having the backing of the Board is crucial for me to be effective in my role and my desire for NZ Young Farmers to have long term sustainability and strong industry support and respect. Lastly, I am constantly impressed by the level of passion and commitment from our members. The number of volunteer hours given to our organisation is truly exceptional. Together we can create an amazing legacy of which we can be very proud.

Health & Safety Report

Health & Safety

9 2014/2015 NZ YOUNG FARMERS ANNUAL REPORT

In the past year and a half NZ Young Farmers has come a long way in ensuring the organisation is being proactive in everything Health and Safety - from creating paperwork for the compliance side to running informative health & safety evenings facilitated by Worksafe, Clubs and Regions for members. The change of law on the 4th of April saw us update some documents but we were prepared so it’s been smooth sailing.

During this period we have worked hard as an organisation to ensure that our members are safe at all events we organise and that completing the health and safety requirements is as easy as possible. A real shift of culture has occurred during this period and that is thanks to the members who have put their hand up to lead health and safety, particularly those who hold positions at club and regional level.

An increase in reporting is occurring which is a great sign that all injury reports are starting to make their way to National Office so we can record these. This is a requirement of the law and helps us ensure we are investigating any reoccurrences. All personal information is kept confidential and only the details are reported on.

*1st January 2015 – 31st May 2016 – incidents total 35

We are currently working on some great new initiatives which we hope will help you on farm and at NZ Young Farmers events to ensure that not only are you meeting the compliance of the health and safety law but also improving your overall health and wellbeing and profit margins. We hope to start rolling these out over the next 6 – 12 months.

What is the purpose of AgriKidsNZ?By Fordell Farmhands Georgina Bryant, Bridgette O’Leary & Seth Forlong.

AgriKidsNZ is a competition which brings people from all over New Zealand together for one event. It encourages teams to work together and develops a greater appreciation of agriculture. But what is the main purpose of this event? We are going to make this clear to you. Firstly, it educates the younger generations about agriculture and all other aspects of farming. In 20 years’ time, these are the people who will be running farms all over New Zealand and perhaps in other countries. They can start farming already knowing valuable information that can greatly help their farm to be successful. Secondly, it develops valuable skills that are essential not only to farming but in life. Teams have to communicate well to each other, they have to work together, and they have to manage their time well in order to be successful. What better way to grow these essential skills?

In addition, AgriKidsNZ competition puts great emphasis on health and safety. An example of this is before we began an activity all health and safety risks were pointed out. We were also made aware of the risks around animals and farm equipment. Lastly, AgriKidsNZ is a great competition full of fun and enjoyable activities designed to challenge and find the most knowledgeable and talented children in New Zealand. It develops a greater appreciation of agriculture, educates the younger generation and develops essential skills and awareness of health and safety. We believe that we have just made clear to you the main purpose of AgriKidsNZ and why it is such a great event.

Financial Report 2014/2015

17 2014/2015 NZ YOUNG FARMERS ANNUAL REPORT

The 2015 financial result for NZ Young Farmers reflects the past twelve months being a period of focusing on ensuring the organisation continues to be financially sustainable while undertaking substantial transformation as a result of positive growth.

The organisation has been able to return a surplus of $220,592 while doubling the number of full-time employees, securing a significant funding stream through the Red Meat Profit Partnership (the RMPP) and relocating to a new National Office in Templeton.

In addition, the organisation has been able to build its financial position that places NZ Young Farmers in a healthy state to strive to achieve its strategic objectives.

As a result of the substantial transformation of the organisation over the past year the 2015 Annual Financial Statements have been presented in a format which is more suited to reflect each business unit’s performance. This format is not consistent with the 2014 Annual Financial Statements. This presents some challenges with comparisons.

Statement of Financial PerformanceThe Statement of Financial Performance for the 2015 Financial Year shows a substantial 55 percent increase in Total Revenue to $3,638,327 (2014: $2,341,291). The increase in Total Revenue is largely driven by an additional $1,142,231 of Industry Funding as a result of the introduction of income from the RMPP.

The RMPP is an industry partnership administered by Beef + Lamb NZ on behalf of the Red Meat Industry. This is a seven-year programme where NZ Young Farmers is mandated with people-development projects such as further growing the industries interaction with secondary school students through TeenAg, the introduction of the Red Meat Network in universities throughout the country and upscaling the Rural Business Network. In addition, NZ Young Farmers is involved in curriculum development activities and further initiatives on behalf of the RMPP.Other movements within 2015 Total Revenue and the previous year are largely due to the organisation focusing on generating new industry sponsorship and greater access to grants that resulted in $154,805 of additional revenue.

Total Operating Expenditure significantly increased by 62 percent in the 2015 Financial Year to $2,668,245 (2014: $1,650,293) largely as a result of the additional expenditure through the RMPP and additional payroll costs as the National Office moves to full operational capacity.

Additional Operating Expenditure of $575,577 is due to increased payroll costs at National Office in the Events and Marketing team and the Business Development team as well as additional Field Officers within the Operations team.

Other significant movements within Total Operating Expenditure are largely driven by additional costs due to the growth in the organisation contributed by the introduction of the RMPP, greater operating costs through the additional staff within the organisation and costs for the Grand Final and conference held in Taupo.

Corporate Expenditure increased from the previous year largely as a result of additional payroll costs at National Office and the establishment of the new National Office at Templeton.

Profitability in 2015 decreased by $253,367 from the previous year but is still positive at $220,592 (2014: $473,759). This is a reflection of the organisation effectively managing the costs of the business during a time of significant growth. It is also worth noting that 2014 Financial Year had a one-off contribution from the RMPP of $368,000 which inflated the 2014 Financial Year result.

Financial Report 2015

Page 19: · PDF fileContents 1 2014/2015 NZ YOUNG FARMERS ANNUAL REPORT Vision Statement Chairman’s Message Board of Directors ... JAMES BOOKER VICE-CHAIRMAN NADINE HUITEMA COLE GROVES

Statement of Financial PositionMembers Funds increased from $623,217 to $843,809, or by 35.3 percent. This increase is due to the annual surplus and leaves the organisation in a strong financial position.

Of particular note, Total Current Assets have increased to $1,232,301 (2014: $941,072) with a pleasing increase in cash and bank alances at $758,666 (2014: $536,570). Total Non-Current Assets are at $194,094 (2014: $181,002).Total Current Liabilities have increased to $582,586 (2014: $498,857) mainly due to an increase of Total Accounts Payable at $419,122 (2014: $330,831).

The financial position of NZ Young Farmers is the strongest it has been in a number of years and the organisation is well placed to continue to focus on delivering its strategic objectives while overcoming any unforeseen changes in financial stability that may arise during this time.
