MOON APPOINTED TOQUALITY BOARDOF DIRECTORSHarold Moon has been appointed to theBoard of Directors of Quality RecordsLimited. The announcement was made byGeorge Struth, vice-president and generalmanager of Quality.

Mr. Moon recently retired as general mana-ger of BMI Canada, the Performance RightsOrganization he founded more than twenty-six years ago. He is also a director of theCountry Music Association and is consid-ered a leading force in the establishmentof international recognition for Canadiancountry music.

CLIFF EDWARDS -A FAMILY AFFAIRCliff Edwards is back, with a dynamicpackage of talent that lends credence tothat old establishment saying "Thefamily that plays together etc. etc....".Edwards, his beautiful and talented wifeAnne and his brother Brian, showcasedtheir new act at the Friar's in Toronto(13-18). His new label, Columbia, laid onthe red carpet treatment for an openingnight press, radio, dealer party.Edwards is not dynamic - he's talented, and if he made any attempt to "fire up"his laid back image, he would probablyblow it. He's driving - but he's leaving thescenery to Anne and Brian and a light, popcountry backing.

Obviously the Edwards' hiatus from theclub/concert scene hasn't taken away fromtheir ability to communicate with theiraudience. They still retain that Bells'charisma (they were original members)and now with the added talent of brotherBrian, they emerge with a fresh new actthat should bring them into prominenceover the next few months. Brother Brian, former member of the Montreal -basedMashmakhan, adds that contemporaryrock image the elder Edwards will need to"cross over" into that more lucrative field.

Pop programmers are already into Edwards'initial outing for Columbia, "Love May BeThe Answer", with a couple of rock con-temporary majors also sampling the single.

TELFER IN SEARCHOF AN AUDIENCEAxe recording artist Jay Telfer is takinghis lumps on the Toronto "noise" circuit- almost an exercise in futility. He did whathe does well at the Chimney (13-18) - a"hamburger heaven" without both foropening night - but he must have foundit difficult competing with the "love"crowd.

On record, Telfer is excellent ("Time HasTied Me") but on stage he appears to lackthat "zing" or "commanding image". Ifyou are allowed to listen intently to Telfer, you can detect an incredible modern andentertaining folk talent with lyrics (hewrites most of his own material) to match. He does a nice job with "Second Storying",and "Ten Pound Note" and delivers abeautiful interpretation of fellow writerJohn Laughlin's "November".

Telfer has a very pure image - much to hisadvantage in singing, but perhaps it lessenshis impact at wit but then there wasthat "high" audience that perhaps wasn't"high" enough to appreciate Jay Telfer.

JEFF BURNS APPOINTEDNATIONAL PROMO -GRTJeff Burns has been appointed nationalpromotion and A& R manager for GRT ofCanada. Burns replaces Neill Dixon whowill now head up his own independentpromotion company.Prior to his appointment to GRT, Burnswas associated with MCA Canada in thecapacity of Ontario promotion manager. His vast knowledge of the industry gained ina very few years arms him well for his newventure. His interest in music during highschool days led him into the group sceneand from that into theatre where he becameinvolved in direction and writing. Wantingfirsthand knowledge of the marketingaspect of the record business Burns joinedthe staff of A&A Records in Toronto wherehe worked his way up through sales andaccounting into a managerial position.Recognizing his potential A&A transferredhim to Montreal to handle advertising andsales when that chain first broke into theQuebec market. It was from here, in 1973,when he took on Ontario promo duties withMCA.

The above announcement was made by RossReynolds, president of GRT of Canada. The appointment is effective immediately.

LITTLE ANTHONY MIXESTODAY WITH YESTERYEARAlthough opening night was disappointing, crowdwise, for Little Anthony and the Im-perials, their two week stay (13-25) at theHook and Ladder Room of the Beverly Hillswill probably end on a happy note. This isa slight trip into nostalgia by one who wasin on the ground floor of the fifties "rockand soul" era . Their big hit of 1958, "TearsOn My Pillow" , was a standout but usedonly as a hook for the nostalgia kick. Thegroup are into today's sound with an excit-ing professionalism that puts them in aleague of their own.

Little Anthony (Jourdine) is still the frontman but the Imperials are exceptional assolo acts. Their dance movements on thesmall stage are tight and with an obviouslywell practiced precision. Harold "The Hawk"Jenkins is the crowd pleaser with his rhythmicbody movements and a dance routine thatraises a bit of a sweat on the audience aswell.

The show is a building process from theopening number. Exacting movements, alittle comedy, interesting patter with theaudience and a wall of sound generatedby his travelling back-up that obviouslyinfluences his pickup musicians.Album product available from Qualityincludes a Birchmount release "Hits Of TheFifties" and, released to coincide with theirToronto appearance, "On A New Street"(Avco 11012).

A YEAR OF CHANGE ANDDEVELOPMENT AT RCAIt's now almost one year after RCA Canadainstituted regional changes within itsrecord division and "It's the best thing thatcould have happened" says Ed Preston whois in charge of the central and western regionsand oversees the A&R department, thestudios, and the sales and promotion depart-ments. One of the major problems thatcreated a tight situation within the industryand in particular with RCA was the shortageof vinyl. Says Preston, "The major crisishas passed. January and February werethe largest months, making this the biggestquarter in the history of the company."There has been some concern by major rec-ord companies with the actual value of theirregional promotion men. Some are appar-ently considering shaving down their promo-tion staff. Not with RCA. Ed Preston valueshis regional promotion people, who arealso involved in artist relations. Programmersand press people as well as visiting artistsconstantly take the time to inform Preston

COLOUR AVAILABLEFROM GALBRAITHGalbraith Reproductions of Toronto, one ofthe pioneers in supplying glossy photos tothe entertainment industry, has announced amajor price breakthrough in colour photos. What Galbraith is supplying actually is thatdemanded by groups, agencies and individ-uals from coast to coast - "colour photosat a reasonable price". The firm's Al Gal-braith and Gale Gannon had consideredentering the colour photo business but thecost per print, even in large quantities, would have been way out of line for theaverage entertainer.

Coupled with their knowledge of the busi-ness along with startling new advances inchemistry, photographic paper and equip-ment, Galbraith and Gannon hit upon aformula whereby they could producecolour photos of entertainers at a reasonableprice. In quantities of 100 Galbraith sells8 x 10 colour photos, produced from asubmitted negative for 99 cents each. Pricesgo as low as 85 cents each. Normal in -planttime is three working days.

With the advent of colour glossies, Galbraithhas introduced a new dimension in groupand artist selling.

Galbraith was one of the first to offerreasonably priced photo posters of enter-tainers. These two feet by three feet postersat $3.95 in black and white or colour hadthe added advantage of being framed andwere ideal for in-store or tavern display.

The Galbraith story actually began back in1956 when Al Galbraith entered the dryprocess duplicating business in Toronto'sprinting and stationery district. His totalcapital - one thousand dollars. It wasn'tuntil 1963 when Galbraith came across amachine that was capable of fast, economi-cal glossy reproduction. A year later he hadthe process down to a science and was pro-ducing quantities of glossies at 13 centseach. A few years later and after havingchurned out hundreds of thousands ofglossies, primarily to large firms (CBC,Pacific Western Airlines, Philco-Ford andCanadian General Electric) Galbraithbecame increasingly aware of the entertain-

industry and after a successful pitchnow deals with hundreds of booking agents, record companies and entertainers from

to coast in Canada.

of the importance of the RCA man in thefield.

Many changes have occurred over this pastyear, probably one of the most being theinfluence of television packaging of albums.RCA is now looking hard at this concept.Preston believes that television packages, nomatter who presents them, have broughtabout a much higher degree of interest bythe public in catalogue product. "I amtotally convinced that TV packages haveinfluenced sales at the retail level. There'sa good percentage of viewers who won'tsend money in the mail but they will goout and shop for the items and be influencedby other product from their favourite artistor group."RCA has lent their tracks to multi -artistvariety packs. One of the most recent andapparently very successful is the release byMarathon of "Country Music Cavalcade".Included on this album are tracks by theMercey Brothers, George Hamilton IV, DickNolan, The Family Brown, Carlton Show -band and others. They have also been invol-ved with this type of project on their own forconcentration with rack jobbers.

A big sore point with Preston has been therumours, already touched on, about Cana-dian content. Stories have it that RCA passesover Canadian artists and gives the vinyl prob-lem as an excuse. "This just isn't true", saysPreston, "We won't close the door on anyartist we feel has potential. RCA's studioshave been exceptionally busy with label andcommercial activity - much of it beinglabel work."Sure we drop artists from time to time, mostly through lease deals. We are beingmore discreet with some releases which wefeel is more in keeping with our capabilitiesto develop artists, and we don't releaseevery single and album released in the U.S."

With such a heavy concentration on Cana-dian product it's even more disturbing toPreston that RCA doesn't get the credit itdeserves for Canadian content recordings.Last year (1973) they released eighty-twosingles and fifty albums of Canadian artists- approximately seven hundred and fourteenCanadian content selections. Says Preston:"We are a major supplier of French Canadianproduct. Fifty percent of sales by our Que-bec branches are with French Canadianproduct.RCA's sales branches, from coast to coast

COLUMBIA MOVES INTOTELEVISION ADVERTSColumbia has expanded its merchandisingefforts into television advertising. The firstever Columbia produced taggable sixtysecond spots are now in the can and readyfor a heavy concentration from mid -Maythrough June. Artists and groups includedin the ad campaign include: Murray Mc-Lauchlan, Chicago, Paul Simon, Billy Joeland many others.

The spots, advertising new product by theabove artists and tied -in with leadingretailers, will appear on those U.S. borderstations carrying "In Concert" and "MidniteSpecial" covering Vancouver, Calgary,Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. The tag -gable spots will also be used on CBC-TV'snetwork outing of "Rock Show" hosted byDon Kirschner.

Julian Rice, Director of Merchandising forColumbia, reports that "if successful, television advertising will be an ongoingactivity for Columbia."

in Canada, have surpassed their monthlyquotas every month since the first of theyear. Preston attributes this to product andthe company's approach to marketing. The trade papers in the U.S. have devoteda great deal of space to the "Returns"problem in that country. Preston's opinion- "I feel the Canadian industry, and par-ticularly RCA, is several years ahead of themarket in the south finding a solution tothis problem."RCA was one of the first companies tobecome involved in co-op advertising withdealers and are still the leader in this field. The company prefers to tie all plans in withco-op advertising, rather than discount pro-grams, giving an edge to the consumer and,in most cases, showcasing both current andcatalogue product.Rack jobbers too are more inclined to co-operate with RCA now than ever before. They are interested in the overall situation(catalogue) as well as the hit product - toget the impact of the product to the retaillevel.

Piracy is still a major problem for RCA who, together with other members of the CRIA,are keeping up a running battle in an attemptto curb this practice. Much concentrationis being placed on B.C. which appears tobe the spawning ground for illegal tapes.Canadian companies have the protectionof the Canadian Copyright Act and theRCMP have apparently stepped up theirenforcement of this Act.On the single front, Preston is convincedthat singles are still an important item. Headmits that single sales are not as healthyas in previous years and blames much ofthis on the growing practice of taping hitsoff the radio. He insists however, "Singlesstill sell albums. The right kind of singlecan still sell 100,000 copies and that createsalbum sales too."

Advance U.S. record service to Canadianradio stations is a problem to some compan-ies but not to RCA. Preston values the singleaction on RPM even though the single hasn'tbeen released in Canada. "We can release inthree days. The chart should show a propor-tion of what is going to happen not beentirely based on what is happening."

There is a heavier concentration this yearthan ever before for the U.S. release ofCanadian product. Preston expects to see ahefty increase by mid -year. Their A&Rdepartments (English) with Barry Keanelooking after contemporary rock and popand Barry Haugen the country field, haveincreased their activity as well, with newsignings and releases to be announced overthe next few weeks.

ERIKSON INTOWESTERN TOURU.A. recording artist Karl Erikson is nowinto his western tour which kicked off May17. He will play dates in Edmonton, Leth-bridge, Dawson Creek, Prince George, Kam-loops and Kelowna. He will share the billingwith Savoy Brown on the Edmonton andLethbridge dates.

up, we tipped the questioner to those whocould best answer the questions regardingthat segment of the music industry.

It is a standing order in our office thatquestions regarding the record industrybe referred to the Canadian RecordingIndustry Association (CRIA).Most of the inquiries that do come into ouroffice regard the domestic Canadian musicindustry, of which the record industry (dom-estic) is a part.

In an effort to promote the industry andalso RPM (which anyone will agree isnothing but good business practise), wedo co-operate with anyone seeking infor-mation.

So ... although we aren't the voice of theindustry, calls are being constantly referredto us from people in Canada and inter-nationally to answer questions about theindustry. The referals are from the veryassociations not wanting us to speak onbehalf of the industry.

Not too many years ago, there was littlewritten about the industry in Canada, andthere were very few available to speak forthe industry. It has only been recentlythat the industry has really sought pressand been able to accommodate anyoneseeking information.

As recently as five years ago, there was noone in the Canadian record industry whocould get together a representation to appearbefore the CRTC at an open hearing regard-ing the Cancon regulations.

In five years, the industry has come a longway. We still aren't used to the idea ofturning away anyone seeking information, and we haven't been able to get rid of thephrase "RPM, the voice of the Canadianrecord industry".

Perhaps we shouldn't even try to change ourstatus in the industry in view of the fact thatRPM maintains an open door policy toprint any of the views or feelings of anysegment of the industry.

None of the associations representing theindustry have been turned down when theyhave an announcement to make. Thatannouncement would appear in an advertise-ment or in the editorial portion of RPM.

Comments on behalf of any of the associa-tions allied to the music industry in Canadaare welcomed by RPM.

The reason for RPM is to represent the musicindustry which represents music publishers, artist managers, booking agents, artists, independent producers, songwriters andrecord companies. Each and every week ourpages are filled with items about all ofthese segments of the industry. We alsorepresent the country, rock, popular andserious aspects of the music industry.

Ten years ago when RPM began, our aimwas to bring together each of these segmentsof the industry and to inform the industryfrom St. John's to Victoria.

It would be foolhardy of us to withdrawfrom that original aim ten years later, because of the demands of a few, and whatis shaping up to be a battle of personalities,- yet we become involved, if we wish tocontinue our day to day activities, as apublication covering the music industry inCanada.

Strangely enough we have survived all thedirect and subtle pressures forced upon us

over the past two or three years.

We still publish weekly and we still commanda subscription list that guarantees us thebulk of the music industry in Canada. Theserepresent our readers and their interest isindicated by the fact that they are paidsubscribers.

Ten years later we find ourselves the victimof a paper war. What was the chief criti-cism of RPM years ago, now comes to theforefront.

As small as the paper is, it was publishedevery week on paper that the industry feltwasn't glossy enough for this business. Nowwe find that even newsprint is becomingexpensive and at a premium.

What the industry would not accept yearsago is now becoming scarce and expensive. In fact other magazines may soon be in thesame situation.

Paper costs are skyrocketing and newsprint(which is the cheapest paper available) isthe most in demand and the shortest insupply.

Monthly publications that are not tightlyscheduled have the advantage of a moreexpensive stock which is more readilyavailable. If we were not a weekly anddependant on automation and instantpublication with news and data that thetrade wants quickly, we might consider adifferent process and a better quality paper.

Increases in costs and the loss of someadvertisers has forced us to consider publish-ing every other week. In essence this meansthat the music industry in Canada can'tafford a weekly trade paper.

This would eventually lead to a monthlypublication which would in fact be a moreprofitable venture.A great deal depends on the continuingincrease in the cost of paper, ink, labourand supplies and the cooperation of theindustry.

LES GRANDS BALLETSSTORM THE WESTWhen Montreal's les Grands Ballets Canad-iens first performed the Who's "Tommy"in the fall of 1970 critics were quick to heappraise on both the company's interpretationand the Who's music. Since that first inno-vative step almost four years ago, les GrandsBallets have performed "Tommy" through-out Canada and the United States, to con-tinued acclaim.

The company's current swing through themajor cities of western Canada leaves nodoubt that the magic of "Tommy" is stillvery much alive and that the ballet's inter-pretation is as valid as ever. Utilizing tapesof the Decca album with only minor editing, les Grands Ballets delighted audiencesin Calgary, Edmonton, Regina and Vancouverwith their forceful dancing, imaginativestage design and most importantly withfaithful adherence to the story. Four yearslater, "Tommy" is still a delight andaudiences across the west responded withstanding ovations and enthusiastic cheering.

Opening the performance in each city was"Ceremony", the Pierre Henry/SpookyTooth collaboration which unfortunatelyrelies more on gimmickry than musical ordramatic worth for its impact.

LETTERS:11A to the editor

MORE CONSIDERATIONFOR THE RETAILER!!Apr. 10/74Two potentially strong selling LP's havebeen negated by record company decision tosell at higher than normal. This is their newselective pricing policy. First Paul Simon -"Live Rhymin'" on Columbia - $7.98 list.Normal retail around $6.49-$6.79. Why doesa live LP of rehashed material rate thisnew selective pricing?

The 2nd - new Helen Reddy "Love ofJeffery" - $8.29 list selling around $6.75-$6.99. This contains only 5 songs each sidewithout one song breaking 4 minutes barrier.

These may get charted, but only on shippingstrength, but returns will be very high becauseof no retail movement.

Also if your paper is a truly music industrysource I should think perhaps you shoulddevote a regular column to retail andconsumer viewpoints.

Not to criticise or complain but to makea full circle of a record and its industry.

Retail is the last and most important step inthis industry and covered correctly couldprovide a significant contribution in manyareas.

BONNIE DOON DOESIT FOR CROWBAR!!Apr. 19/74You said you were interested in hearingabout what was going on in the wilds ofWestern Canada, no matter how insignificant. And I must confess that Radio Bonnie Doon, the station at Bonnie Doon High School inEdmonton, is about as insignificant as onecan get. In fact we're limited in everythingexcept enthusiasm. The point of this letterthough is to let you know about theCrowbar concert we were able to arrange.

Earlier this year we heard that Crowbar wasembarking on an extensive meet the peopletype tour of Western Canada. Skepticsabounded when it was first proposed thatCrowbar play an Edmonton high school, but Gold and Gold Productions inLethbridge we were able to arrange whatturned out to be Crowbar's only Edmontondate, on March 27th. Crowbar literallydevastated the audience with a performancethat nobody quite expected.Gary McGowanRadio Bonnie DoonEdmonton

GET ALL THE FACTSABOUT THE UNION ... FIRSTMay 7/74I read with great interest, your article inthe May 11th RPM, about five, B.C. radiostations organizing with ACTE. In viewof the, almost universal, low pay and quest-ionable working conditions that Canadianstations have to offer, I feel it wouldn't bea bad idea for your magazine to publishmore, in depth, articles about the joys oforganizing. My warning comes from personal exper-

ience. I feel I was made the, "InnocentVictim", of an attempt to organize oneradio station in B.C. Many promises weremade to me, by a union; i.e. "better wages, working conditions, tenure, etc." On theother hand, the management of the stationin question made some, "Veiled Threats"about joining a union. Of course, the threatswere mostly by innuendo, so as not tocontravene the Canadian Labour Relationsact.

After all the dust had settled, the stationstill has an application for certificationpending, somewhere, and I was politelygiven a pat on the backside, out the door, with tales of some nebulous changes instation policy, that precipitated my demise.I have since heard, that the morale of theplace has deteriorated to the point ofhaving three people forced out, to seek amore humane atmosphere. All of this, adirect result of the attempt at organization.

RPM 25/5/74 - - - 5

I hold no ill feelings toward my formeremployer, or union. Apparently, my careerhas suffered no serious set -back as a resultof the whole mess. The question of mypersonal involvement with the union wasbrought up during negotiations with otherbroadcasting concerns in the province. Thisdid not bar me from taking a position withthe above company. After being "let go" from my other position,I took no action against the company forunfair labour practices. I was later informedthat the union did bring charges against thecompany, but they were later dropped, withno explanation. It was, and still is, my belief that I was,"let go" because management felt I was anorganizer, which I wasn't, and the companywould be better off without me, and theunion. I still won't bring the charges myself, for fear of being, "blacklisted" by theindustry. I ETTERS continued on page 10

RPM WEST11'A

john watts

A few days before the mail strike I sent offan article to hogtown praising the virtues ofusing the mail as a means of communicating. With a slight sense of embarrassment, Iwould like to add that my comments onlyapply when there is mail service.

As a means of circumventing the attempts ofthe post office to put us out of business,RPM West has arranged for telex service. While this does absolutely nothing to over-come the difficulties presented by the mailstrike, it should in the future make communi-cation that much easier. RPM West's telexnumber is: 04 54358. We would be delightedto hear from big record companies, littlerecord companies, studios, radio stations; infact, anyone in the west with somethinghappening.

* * *

One of the big problems we've run into ismaking clear our news policy. My OxfordDictionary says news is "tidings, new infor-mation, fresh events reported". I don'tthink Oxford would be offended if I en-larged on that a little. News to RPM isanything pertaining to the activities of thepeople and companies in the music andbroadcast industries. That includes every -

BISHOP OFF WITHGOOD NOISE SINGLERandy Bishop has entered the solo world ofrecording with his initial single release forGood Noise, "Don't You Worry", a Bishoporiginal, produced by him in Montreal. Localradio station reaction to the single wasalmost immediate with CKGM, CFCF,CHOM-FM and CJ FM all giving it the nod.CKGM's music director Tom McLean taggedthe single as having "a good clean soundand a lot of class".

Bishop has been building a large followingthroughout the Quebec market and has beeninvolved in production of other artists aswell. He was active in board chores for ex-CHOMer Doug Pringle's single "C'est pas lejeu" as well as Anne Anderssen's "Romeoet Julianne", both of which are now estab-lished hits in Quebec province.

Coinciding with Bishop's release wereseveral dates in the Montreal area - JohnAbbot College (10) and six days at theNelson Hotel (21-26) as well as radio andtelevision dates. A series of dates acrossCanada for Bishop and his group are nowbeing firmed.

thing from a regional promo rep setting up apromotion with the local radio station tothe signing of a new artist and everythingin between.

In the west, there is a very strong feeling thatToronto and Montreal could care less aboutwhat is happening. In too many cases this istrue. In the case of RPM, the only thingwhich held us back for ten years was simpleeconomics. That problem has now been over-come. We are here right now, and we do care.

Unfortunately, that is not enough. WhileRPM was developing its financial wherewithalin Toronto, things were happening in thewest. The western industry has been under-going years of evolution virtually cut offfrom the medium of the trade papers. Con-sequently relations with the trades are nowat a very embryonic state. The lines of com-munication simply don't exist as they might. The eight by ten glossy, probably the mostcommon medium of expression and news inthe trade world wide, is a rarity in westernCanada. The press release is virtually unheardof. These are things which will take timeand effort to set right.

Any business, whether it be records or trac-tors, depends on the stock tools of tradereporting to spread its message. To get ourmessage across, we have to bring thesetools into use.

HAGOOD HARDY INTORECORD PRODUCTIONHagood Hardy, known nationally throughhis Canadian Talent Library releases, hasformed his own record company flying thebanner of Isis Records. Says Hardy: "Ourproduction focus will be on total quality. Our recording opportunities will take usinto a number of fields of music includingcontemporary, jazz and classical".

Initial release will be "The Homecoming",an original Hardy composition, probablybetter known as the backing for a Salada Teacommercial. Public response promptedSalada and their agency, the Leo BurnettCompany to encourage Hardy into writinga longer version that could possibly beused as a single.

Hardy, through his Hagood Hardy Produc-tions, is a major force in jingle productionas well as composing and arranging musicfor film and television.

Distribution for the new label hasn't beenfirmed at time of writing.

On the wings of aLONDON, Eng.

The honest rock interview is a rare thingthese days for a multitude of reasons. Theyawning credibility gap between rock starsand the rock press has reached such extremes(especially in America) that very few of theformer are likely to entrust any familysecrets to members of the latter.

Years of misquoting, bad judgment andchronic amateurism has brought most rockmusic makers to the inescapable conclusionthat they can fare very well, thank youvery much, without the intrusion of a rockjournalist. As a result, the truth hasbecome a bird on the wing, one that youfrequently hear in the streets but very sel-dom find in the rock press.

Bearing such attitudes in mind, the scoopinterview with Marianne Faithfull in arecent issue of New Musical Express is areal lulu.

ritchie yorke

Marianne's music just seemed too contrived, too plaintive, lacking in soul. Yet that isnot the point of the exercise. What mattersis what Miss Faithfull has to say about theseten years past since she bobbed up with"As Tears Go By"; the daily papers, predict-ably, have been full of it. "I slept withthree of the Stones" burst forth one head-line. But there is much, much more to itthan that.

With due credits to the New Musical Express,we now provide some sample extracts fromthis most remarkable and enlightening inter-view, which tells us more about the lifestyleof the Stones, for example, than anything Ican recall.

"When I was about 16," she says, "I wantedto be an actress, and a scholar too. Butwhatever I wanted to be, I wanted to begreat at it. My first move was to get aRolling Stone as a boyfriend. I slept withthree and then I decided the lead singer wasthe best bet." I knew he (Mick) wasn't the most impor-tant because I had always understood thatin the Stones, Keith was the most important.I think, in the beginning, I was alwaysreally in love with Keith much more thananyone else, as a fan. He's the epitomy ofthe Romantic Hero and, if you're a middle-class girl and you've read your Byron, that'sKeith Richard ... even now.

"He's turned into Count Dracula now, buthe's still an injured, tortured, damnedyouth which is really such fun, isn't it?That's the thing about the Stones ... thatthey're dirty and awful and arrogant andKeith is still like that."

An then, on the subject of girl singers."Chick singers are such nebulous objects. It's built on such funny things. And it'snot really good music. It's just if they'repretty or sexy or say something at thetime. But you can't actually build a career

let black doveas a pop singer if you're a woman. It'simpossible.

"What was sexy about Sandy Shaw and mewas that we didn't give a damn. I didn'tgive a damn what happened to the recordand I didn't give a damn what happened toany of them. I had a completely separateway of life plotted out for myself and thiswas just a way to get out of Reading (herhometown)."Marianne claims that Mick Jagger used heras a source of lyric inspiration for his songs."It was like having a butterfly or an insecton a pin. It's beautiful and fascinating. Iwas, and I am, so complex and he couldn'tlet me go. He had me on a pin and hewatched me flail and writhe, but it was some-thing that fascinated him as an artist."

Nonetheless, Marianne still believes thatJagger wanted her to make it in her ownright. "He didn't want me not to make it.But the thing about two artists that loveeach other ... all artists, you know, aretotally selfish and, in the end, whether Mickwould admit this or not, I was giving himfantastic food for material and that wasmuch better than me being a little actressin my own right."

On a broader plane, we continue. "This iswhat happened to a whole generation. Weall wanted to have as much feeling as we couldget hold of. We wanted to experience asmuch actual feeling, whether it was awfulor nice or whatever. We wanted it becausewe knew, and we were right, that anythingis better than no feeling. But I feel it canbe controlled now.

"You have the martyrs of that school ofthought who died and it's silly - butimmeasurable numbers of people camethrough it ... damaged, but through it.We're all screwed up. We've got to acceptthat. But it doesn't stop you operating, It

LETTERS continued from page 5

My point is, all of us at the station wereapproached by the organizer, given promisesof milk and honey and a five day week, withwhich we were all overcome. As it turnedout, the union's promise of not being firedonce I signed the card, was just talk. I

wonder how many other promises theymade, were "just talk". I was told thatwhat the company did was against the law.In conclusion, I ask for your magazine'shelp in keeping other people out of apotentially bad situation. Let us knowmore about this situation and others involvedwith organizing.I would like to point out that, even thoughI did get burned, I am still not against theidea of a union, if they do help to improvean unfair situation.

I sign this letter, because all facts containedherein are true, and I wish to lend credibil-ity to them. However, I ask you not to pub-lish my name, as it has already beenblackened (or reddened) enough by thewhole mess.

Marianne is unimpressed by John Lennon's"Mind Games" album, and says she feltlike "giving up" after hearing McCartney's"Live and Let Die". "A travesty of every-thing one held sacred, wasn't it?" she notes.

"I'm sure John and Ringo were muchmore rigid than Mick and Keith were aboutthe place of women ... George still is.That's why Patti's gone. George is veryjealous of his wife. He doesn't like her tohave any friends. He's really messed up herwork too, it matters to Patti. The modellingjobs keep her together. Yes, George is very, very jealous.

"Paul was really much more sophisticatedbecause of falling in love with Jane Asher.Though she's a bit wet, at the time she wasfive times more worldly and city bred thanCynthia or Maureen. I remember Cynthiatelling me once that John wouldn't lether have a nanny. She was very furiousbecause that was the sort of status symbol,I suppose."

The rap might be a bit gossipy for somepeople, but I suspect it gives us a uniqueinsight into the way things really are.

JUNEAU REBUKESTV ADVERTISERSPierre Juneau, in speaking to the Associationof Canadian Advertisers at their conventionMay 7th, mentioned a number of objectionsthe CRTC has regarding television advertis-ing.

Juneau referred to the "clutter" and "dis-continuous, entangled jumble of contradic-tory exhortations" of television advertisingand promised that the CRTC was going to dosomething about it. The chairman said"clutter" would also be a factor when thecommission reviews applications for renewalof TV and radio licences.

Even though Juneau acknowledged someimprovement in the content of TV commer-cials, he chided the industry for loud com-mercials, sterotyped protrayals of women, the appeal to the young in beer commer-cials and clumsy editing of movies.
