ProcessTo increase light levels while delivering improved lighting levels a 480W LED high bay was selected. The individually articulating light cones on each fixture meant that the high bays could be installed and the cones adjusted to create perfectly even lighting throughout the space, with reduced glare. To further reduce energy consumption, ONEnergy connected occupancy sensors to control the high bays, as it was observed that all of the existing lights remained on, even when the space was minimally occupied or empty.

Outcomes

LightingThere was a dramatic change in colour temperature and colour visibility after the LEDs were installed. The light distribution was much more even due to a better max-to-min light level ratio, and the average lux level was increased from 381 to 419. The removal of the metal halide ballasts also eliminated the irritating buzzing noise typical with metal halide lighting.

EnergyThe upgrade resulted in an energy reduction of 80%, or 52,646 kWh, and $5,000 per year plus additional operation & maintenance savings.

Metal halide 1000W high bays were discolouring with age, and the older ballasts were producing a loud buzz that echoed throughout the cavernous hangar space. In addition, the light dispersion was dim and patchy.

The GigaTera 480W LED fixtures drastically improved light levels, creating much better conditions for airplane maintenance. The silence of the LEDs was greatly appreciated. In fact, employees could now hear the radio while they worked!
