PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 42: The Bap!sm of Jesus in the Jordan River, con!nued…

In the encyclical of Saint John Paul II on the Rosary, he includes these words in his introduc!on of the mysteries of light:

Each of these mysteries is a revela!on of the Kingdom now present in the very person of Jesus. The Bap!sm in the Jordan is first of all a mystery of light. Here, as Christ descends into the waters, the innocent one who became “sin” for our sake (cf. 2Cor 5:21), the heavens open wide and the voice of the Father declares him the beloved Son (cf. Mt 3:17 and parallels), while the Spirit descends on him to invest him with the mission which he is to carry out. (21)

One thing that Jesus repeatedly emphasized was that his claims about himself—for example to have the authority to forgive sins, to be the Son of God, and to have all authority in heaven and on earth—were backed up by evidence. This included the miracles he did and his Resurrec!on, but also what happened at his bap!sm, as witnessed by people there and recorded in the Bible. The voice of God the Father coming from heaven was one Witness. The appearance of God the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove was another Witness. These events carry significance that would have been understood by many Jewish eyewitnesses, as well as to Jewish hearers and readers of the Gospel.

In Jewish thought—as we see in Sacred Scripture—being “God’s Son” signified not only being the expected Messiah, but also being the authorized representa!ve of God and having his authority and power—being equal to him. (John 5:18)

The presence of the Holy Spirit over the water and over Jesus would have brought to the minds of his fellow Jews several things. One was the crea!on account in the first chapter of the Bible: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2) The Holy Spirit present at the bap!sm of Jesus was a sign poin!ng to the divine nature of Jesus. As the Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity, he was involved in the original crea!on of the universe. He is also God’s instrument for bringing about a new crea!on. This new crea!on has many manifesta!ons: Jesus’ own

resurrected, glorified body (John 20:19-20, Luke 24:13-31, Revela!on1:9-16); the glorified, resurrected bodies that those who have died in a state of grace can expect to receive when Christ returns (1 Corinthians 15:35-53); the new life and iden!ty here and now that believers in Jesus Christ can enjoy by his grace (2 Corinthians 5:17); the new path opened to in!macy with God (Hebrews 10:19-22); the New Covenant established by Christ between God and men (Luke 22:20); and the promised new heaven and earth (Revela!on 21:1).

The presence of God’s Spirit at the bap!sm of Jesus would also have reminded many Jews of how God poured out his Spirit on specific people among the people of Israel as part of calling them to a special mission, and to give them the power and wisdom they needed to carry out that mission. The recipients of these anoin!ngs included priests, prophets and kings. So, the Holy Spirit’s manifesta!on at the bap!sm of Jesus was a sign poin!ng to the fact that Jesus was commissioned and empowered by God for his priestly, prophe!c and kingly mission. As members of the Body of Christ, those of us who are Chris!ans share in his priestly, prophe!c and kingly mission. Like him, we have been anointed by the Holy Spirit to par!cipate in God’s mission in this world of defea!ng the works of the devil, manifes!ng the kingdom of Jesus Christ and invi!ng people to conversion and salva!on.

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for passing down to us the knowledge of the event of Jesus being bap!zed in the Jordan River. Help us to enter fully into this mystery, surrender fully in love and humility to Jesus as our ul!mate priest, prophet and king, do what he asks as sharers in his mission, and rejoice to share in the new crea!on that he is unfolding. We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever.

Your fellow pilgrim through the Rosary, Father Rudolph

Abor!on’s Silent Vic!m A few weeks ago, a heartbreaking video was circula!ng that drama!cally showcases abor!on’s mul!ple vic!ms. In addi!on to the obvious baby and mother… …there are more – one who desperately needs our help. The se*ng of this video is outside an abor!on center, ironically with the word “Hope” in its name. Outside the closed door is Tyler, crouched down with his arms extended. His girlfriend had just gone inside for an abor!on.

Tyler is making one last, desperate plea for the life of his child. “Please don’t kill our baby! Abby, please don’t kill our baby! Abby…” He then breaks down, sobbing. In a second video, a devastated Tyler sits on the curbing of the parking lot. In between sobs he tearfully says, “I’m such a good dad,” referring to Abby’s children from a previ-ous rela!onship. Tyler would have been there for his child but is now faced with the reality that his opportunity has been sha$ered.

At first, I hesitated to share Tyler’s grief and despera!on, but it’s important for his wel-fare and others that Americans understand abor!on seriously impacts men. Tyler isn’t alone in his grief. There are millions more like him.

It’s true that many men are part of the problem, but we must realize many are also the vic!ms. Even some of those who supported, pressured, coerced or even forced women into abor!on have become vic!ms of the grief and shame that o<en follows.

If you or someone you know is struggling with the loss of a child to abor!on, there is hope and healing. The Men and Abor!on Network (MAN) was established to help you. A website developed exclusively for grieving fathers and those who want to help them have a wealth of resources. Wherever you live, you can request a free peer-to-peer counselor, anonymously if you wish. Your privacy is paramount. You will not be judged. We understand your pain. Abor!on is a cancer. It kills or maims everyone within its reach, indiscriminately inflic!ng pain, grief, shame and sorrow. We must stand in the gap between abor!on and its intended vic!ms. And we must reach out with love and compassion to those who now struggle with the grief of abor!on.

If these videos haunt you, it’s proof that your heart beats with love and compassion for hur!ng fathers. Now you have the tools to help these men. They are all around us.

For the fathers too,

SAINT OF THE DAY - SAINT MAKARIOS THE WONDER WORKER Makarios was given the name “Christopher” when he was bap!zed in his hometown of Constan!nople (now Istanbul, Turkey). He was well educated and an enthusias!c student of the Bible who later went to the monastery of Pelekete (Greek for “hewn with an axe,” in reference to its loca!on on a steep rock), where he took the name Makarios, which is Greek for “Blessed.” (In the West he is some!mes referred to by the La!n version of his name, Macarius.) He was a model monk and chosen to be abbot. Reports got out of miracles of healing that God did through him and crowds flocked to Pelekete to be healed. A<er Leo the Armenian came to power, Makarios got in trouble with him because Leo favored the iconoclast movement, which claimed that any ar!s!c imagery—likes icons, statues, mosaics or pain!ngs—of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary or other holy people—were idolatrous, wrong and should be destroyed. Makarios and the other monks of Pelekete opposed iconoclasm. They rightly pointed out that the images themselves were not objects of worship, but rather windows, so to speak, through which Our Lord was worshiped and the saints honored. The Emperor had Makarios tortured in various ways and imprisoned. He was freed a<er Leo’s death by the new Emperor, Michael the Stammerer. Michael tried to win Makarios over to the iconoclast posi!on. When that failed, Makarios was exiled to the island of Aphusia, where he died. The date of his death is known—August 18th—but not the exact year. It was probably around 850. Saint Makarios, pray for us!
