AFCOOP Winter General Meeting Jan. 28th, 2016, 6:30pm

Welcome to new AFCOOP employees Heather Young and Claire Michalewicz!

Heather is our FILM 5 Coordinator. Heather grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick and completed a BA inEnglish at the University of New Brunswick and a BFA in Film at NSCAD University where she received the

Governor General’s Silver Medal. Her short films include Dog Girl (2009), A Night Out (2011), Green (2013),

and Howard and Jean (2014). Her films have screened at festivals such as the Atlantic Film Festival, the

Montreal World Film Festival, and the Vancouver International Film Festival. She is currently working on a new

short film, Puck Bunny, to be completed in 2016.

Claire is our Education Coordinator. Originally from Connecticut, Claire came to Halifax via Toronto. She hasan Honours BSc in psychology from the University of Toronto and an MA in journalism from The University of

Western Ontario, and has worked all over the place as a reporter, editor, and arts administrator. (She also

plays a mean oboe and bakes a lot of cookies.) She's excited about joining the team at AFCOOP and planning

the Winter Workshop Series.

AFCOOP & WIFT-AT ANNOUNCES: Directed by Women Participants

AFCOOP and Women in Film and Television-Atlantic (WIFT-AT) are pleased to announce participants selected

for their joint program “Directed by Women.”



“Directed by Women” is a professional development program for emerging female directors;; it will include

training and mentorship on the topics of screenwriting, directing, working with key crew, pitching and

marketing.

AFCOOP and WIFT-AT received a large number of applications to this program and through a peer jury process

the following eight filmmakers and projects were selected for development:

It is clear, from the number of applications received, that this type of initiative is needed in the Atlantic film

community. AFCOOP and WIFT-AT plan to use “Directed by Women” as a pilot program for future iterations of

this type of programming.

“Directed by Women” is funded by generous support from Arts Nova Scotia.

Women in Film and Television Vancouver (WIFTV) is partnering with the Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative on

Tuesday, December 1 to present a Writing for Horror Workshop taught by Mark Palermo and an info session on

WIFTV's upcoming screenwriting competition. Through this partnership, WIFTV is encouraging participants to

get film treatments ready to submit to their competition deadline January 4.

The night will start out with a thirty-minute info session on the #FromOurDarkSide competition at 5:30 and will

be followed by Mark's workshop from 6:00PM-9:00PM.

Red, blood, guts, murder, mystery, and the written word: This specified workshop focuses on writing

screenplays for horror films. Taught by terrifying expert Mark Palermo, this class will go over how to be creative

while avoiding clichés. You will surely be excited and horrified simultaneously by the depth of knowledge that

you receive through this three hour seminar.

Mark Palermo is a local writer and filmmaker. His feature screenplay Detention (co-authored with its director,



music video veteran Joseph Kahn) was independently produced, and then distributed theatrically by Sony

Pictures in 2012. The teen comedy/horror genre mashup stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Dane

Cook (Mr. Brooks), Shanley Caswell (The Conjuring), and Spencer Locke (Resident Evil: Extinction.) Detention

had a strong run at film festivals, premiering at South By Southwest, and garnering some enthusiastic reviews

and a devoted cult.

Spark: Intelligent Networking is a new program created by Women in Film and Television - Atlantic (WIFT-

AT) to bring together people within the creative economy. The goal is professional insight on a diverse range of

Our topic for November 26 is "From Twitter to Snapchat, How to Get More Eyes on Your Project". In this

Dalhousie Arts Centre Film Screenings: ALTERED STATES: Transformation in Science Fiction Films - Wednesday Series

Aristotle states, famously, in his Poetics, that “Characters must change”. In Science Fiction, sometimes

everything changes. In this film program we look at a series of transformations, from Fritz Lang’s memorable

1927 film Metropolis to two recent adaptations of stories by the maverick Sci-Fi author Philip K. Dick: Minority

Report and A Scanner Darkly. Whether it is humans changing into vegetables—as in Invasion of the Body

Snatchers—or particles changing into dangerously unstable elements—as in The Magnetic Monster, which

climaxes in Nova Scotia—change is constant in Science Fiction, just as it is in technology and identity today.

into animation tells the story of a cop on the trail of a dangerous drug that changes the nature of reality. Based

The Canadian Labour International Film Festival tells the stories of workers – unionised and non-unionised.

CLiFF is the stage and the voice of those who seek justice on the job and dignity in their workplace. CLiFF would

also like to bring the subject of unpaid work into a public discussion. Our festival provides a national platform to

show and showcase those stories which have been made into films, but cannot find an audience beyond the

Celluloid Creation GrantThe Celluloid Creation Grant provides you with resources and support to make a film-based project shot or

finished (or both!) on Super-8, 16mm or 35mm film.

The grant includes:

$250 cash towards film stock,processing, shipping and transfer

Up to 3000ft of film from the AFCOOP film freezer (35mm, 16mm) (colour or b&w) based on availability

Independent Filmmakers GrantThe Independent Filmmakers Grant provides equipment and resources to make a digital-based project.

The grant includes:

$2,000 in kind equipment rental (C300 camera, sound recording equipment, lighting etc. valued at

commercial rates)

$250 cash towards your production costs (crew, cast, art dept. food, etc.)


Equipment must be used by a qualified operator. In order to be cleared on this gear you (or you operator) need

to have either taken a workshop on it or prove your competency to the Technical Coordinator in advance of

your booking.




Post-Production Grant AFCOOP has a full service post-production suite. This is your chance to use it for your next project.

Includes:

2 weeks unlimited access to AFCOOP’s media suite (Final Cut Studio 7, AVID Symphony, Adobe CS6 and

Pro Tools).

Assist Canadian Talent) jury for the production of short form documentary projects. Selected projects will be

scripted BravoFACT shorts, BravoFACTUAL projects will reflect themes, large and small, produced by directors

Centre for Art Tapes Announces New Local Artist in Residence, Michael McCormack

The Centre for Art Tapes is very pleased to announce that Michael D. McCormack has been selected as our first

Local Artist-In-Residence of 2015-2016. The Local Artist in Residence program provides an opportunity for local

media artists to experiment and develop new works involving audio, video, or new media. During his six-month

residency McCormack will be developing sound and electronics for his current work titled FUTURE TELEPHONE.

The project stems from the realization of his recently completed projects, BEACON, STATION, SIGNAL and

FIELD, all of which considered contemporary relationships of how we relate to sight, sound, and distance

through correspondence using archaic or historical media. FUTURE TELEPHONE extends this exploration into the

Niagara Custom Lab is a full service motion picture film laboratory, one of the last of a rare breed that focuses

on providing the most complete and diverse post-production services available. Our goal is to provide these

important services to anyone interested in shooting or working with motion picture film by preserving and

maintaining it as an active artistic medium. Currently we process and print every supported motion

picture stock available, plus many recently discontinued stocks. We meet industry set standards, as well as

push the limits of the medium with alternative methods to provide the best results for our clients work. We are

a small group of passionate artisans who are continuously improving and exploring the boundaries of what a

film laboratory can be, the possibilities are endless.

The Front End Manager is in charge of the front office and is the primary contact person for clients, handling all

client project workflow scheduling. The Front End Manager cleans and preps processed films for printing and

transfer. This position is also responsible for all social media, film store, supplies, and shipping and receiving.

Requirements:

- Knowledge of motion picture laboratory processes

- Experience handling 35mm, 16mm, Super 8, Regular 8, and Double 8 film

- Excellent working knowledge of motion picture film stocks

Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival

Arts Administration Assistant (5 month contract)

The Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival is seeking an Arts Administration Assistant. This is a full time, 5-month

contract. This position is funded through the Job Creation Partnership (JCP) program and applicants must be

eligible for JCP in order to apply. This position will be based in the office of the Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music

Festival in Park Lane Mall, Halifax. Applications must be submitted by 5 pm on December 11.

The Arts Administration Assistant will be an active participant in the planning and presentation of the annual

Nova Scotia Kiwanis Music Festival (held in April, throughout HRM) that presents hundreds of remarkable

performances by local musicians, many in the early stages of their development. More information about the

A valid driver’s license and a background in music education would be considered an asset.
