Dear Future Billionaire,

Welcome to the 14th Annual Auntie Karen Foundation’s Young Entrepreneurs Conference. Our theme for today is “ELECTING YOUR FUTURE”. At this conference today, there are many examples of entrepreneurs who are also involved in the political arena.

We have enjoyed our powerful partnership with Benedict College for all 14 years! A special thanks to Dr. David Swinton on his retirement from Benedict College! He has left his imprint. The building where we are visiting today is named in his honor, the David H. Swinton Center.

Dreaming big can start at any age! We are honored to showcase a number of entrepreneurs from elementary school to college. Youth such as: nine-year-old artist, John Daniel Moorer, the 2015 Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

In 2001, we had a dream to showcase the best young minds in our region and we created this conference to showcase their talent and creative abilities. Today you will have a chance to meet and talk to them. These amazing young entrepreneurs have had an impact on a national and global scale. Gabby Goodwin, owner of Gabby Bows was mentioned on the Today Show and was interviewed on The Tom Joyner Morning Show. I created the Auntie Karen F.A.I.T.H. (Find a purpose or goal; Ask for help; Invest in your mind; Take time to plan; Help someone else) principles as a guide to living my dreams. My hope is that you will read and adopt these concepts to your life. You will see examples of these principles in action throughout the day! I would like to thank the Auntie Karen Board, YE Conference Chair and Co–Chair (Brenda Peterson and Diann Selph), and the 2016 Conference Committee for making this day possible. They have spent months organizing this day especially for you!!! We dedicate this day to one of our committee members, Annette Lewis (April 24, 1961 - May 2, 2016)! Janae WardSomething Fruity

Janae Ward has been drawing and creating designs since 4th grade. She has always loved art and creating beautiful things. She attended Rollings Middle School of the Arts and her love of the arts grew and was nurtured there. In 2011, while attending Rollings, she noticed that there were very few designs for girls who are curvy. The apples, pears and hour glass figures are not really regarded in junior fashions. She set out to create designs that

flatter the figures of “real girls”. Thus, Something Fruity was born. Since then, she has continued to design, learn to sew and make connections that will help her to launch her line. She creates pieces, upon request, for friends and family members and is working to mass produce her line soon. Janae also creates art using different media and is a budding amateur photographer. She is inspired by her surroundings and her travels throughout the country. To date, she has traveled to 49 of the 50 states and 2 countries outside of the US. Janae is currently a senior at Ashley Ridge High School, in Summerville, South Carolina. She hopes to study visual art at Savannah College of Art and Design in the fall of next year.

Jadon A. Shy, born in Newark, Delaware, is the 12 year old son of Rhonda Powell-Shy and vocalist, Ira Shy. His musical gifts and talents were identified at an early age. At the age of four, he performed his first solo at Manna Christian Fellowship Church, Wilmington, Delaware and has been sharing his God given gifts and talents ever since. He is a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church, Columbia, South Carolina under the leadership of Dr. Ivory T. Thigpen, where he enjoys singing on various choirs and praise and worship teams.

Jadon has been on several platforms, signing, modeling and acting. He attended Kindermusik, Wilmington, Delaware; Tim Walkers Studios, Columbia, South Carolina; Freeway Music, Columbia, South Carolina and Studio 27, Model and Talent Inc., Tyrone,

Georgia. Jadon has been blessed to entertain several diversed audiences and has recently played two main characters in FreeWay’s Musical, classical hit play “Alice and Wonderland-Through The Looking Glass”. He has performed at the Columbia’s Music Farm and Benedict College (Auntie Karen Foundation). Currently, he is a 7th grade band and piano student and Longleaf Engineer and Arts Program.

He appreciates a genre of music and has been inspired by the legendary Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, Michael Jackson, John Legend and J. Cole. He realizes that success is just a prayer away and that he can do all things through Christ, Jesus who strengthens him.

John Daniel is a 10 year old 5th grader at Dutch Fork Environmental Science School. He finished his 4th grade year as a straight “A” Student. He loves what he calls fine arts ( music and art). He has taken piano up until this summer when he decided he needed a break.In the summer of 2015 John Daniel took an art class sponsored by USC and The Columbia Art Museum. He decided he wanted to start a summer business. We were

thinking lemonade stand but his vision was bigger than that. He wanted to start his own art business selling his art. Some of his pieces hang in his pediatrician’s office. His pediatrician has also commissioned him to do new pieces of art for the new building they are building. He has done well with his sales. One amazing and awesome thing about John Daniel is he has high functioning autism. He has not let autism define who he is.

Kyle Aubrey Greene, Jr. is a basketball star. A sneaker head. A hard worker. A student. A son. A brother. And a friend. Kyle, also known as KJ, is a born leader and a go-getter. He is smart, funny, ambitious, athletic, and adventurous. He is a leader in his

classroom, a member of his school’s student council, a member of the chess club, and a leader of his basketball teams. KJ is a champion, in his early basketball career he has already won 3 rec league championships and in 2014 won an NTBA National Championship with his 3rd Grade team as a 2nd grader. “Ball is life” is definitely KJ’s motto because he eats, sleeps, and breathes basketball. He is creative, smart, and most importantly empathic to those around him. He is an entrepreneur and A True Baller is the first of many successful business ventures he has planned to launch. Kyle began planning this venture as an eight-year-old and launched his first campaign over a year ago. He started his t-shirt business to raise money for charity and to give money to his church. His other purpose is to make money to get things that he wants without spending his parent’s money.

Chyna Nychol Young is a student at Richland North East High. She is a member of the Dent Dance Company. She has been dancing with them for the past 2 years. Although it is Chyna’s dream to be a dancer one day, her real passion is singing. She comes from a long line of singers and musicians. Chyna has been singing since she could talk. Her favorite genres of music are gospel and pop.

Some of her favorite artist are Tye Tribbett and Jonathan McReynolds. She spends most of her free time perfecting her craft. In the near future she plans to learn how to play her guitar just like her father, Mr. Terence Young.

Gabrielle Goodwin and her mom invented the Double-Face Double-Snap Barrette by GaBBY to save families time, money and frustration. Solving the age-old problem of disappearing hair barrettes, the Dou-ble-Face Double-Snap Barrette is engineered to prevent hair slippage and perfect for pigtails, braids and twists.

GaBBY launched and began selling barrettes through its online store at gabbybows.com in February 2014. In less than six months, GaBBY Bows became available for purchase in 40 select Walgreens stores in South Carolina and Georgia. Nearly 100 retail stores in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina now carry GaBBY Bows, including BiLo and Once Upon a Child. GaBBY has sold her barrettes online in 35 states across the U.S. and in five countries.

GaBBY’s story has been shared in The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, The State, Augusta Chronicle and Atlanta Journal-Constitution, on a number of television stations includ-ing WIS, WLTX, WACH Fox, NBC 26 and ABC Columbia and through a host of online media platforms.

Gabrielle was recently named a 2015 South Carolina Young En-trepreneur of the Year, the youngest to ever receive this award. She and her mom were also named as one of 15 national final-ists for the U.S. Small Business Administration InnovateHER Business Pitch Competition.

Eight year-old Gabrielle is engaged in all aspects of the busi-ness, from inventory and taxes to writing thank you notes to every customer who orders barrettes through gabbybows.com. Asked by her mom to come up with ways to give back to the community, Gabrielle decided she wanted to “play with all the girls others won’t play with,” any girls who have been bullied. Carrying out this idea, GaBBY hosts community wide bullying prevention play dates benefiting area children’s shelters.

Gabrielle loves to read and dance and is a 3rd grader at Es-colores Magnet Academy at Harbison West Elementary School where her favorite subjects are science, math and language arts. Gabrielle, her parents Mike and Rozalynn and little brother Michael live in Columbia, SC.

Kiera McFarlanVocalist

Kiera McFarlan is a native of South Carolina coming from a family full of musicians. She has been singing since she was the young age of seven, where her voice loudly rang in the youth choir. As a teenager, she placed top in the Richland County teen idol competition. She is a rising junior at South Carolina State University,

majoring in early childhood education planning to later further her education at The University of South Carolina. She is a committed member of Zeta Phi Beta dedicated to community service. Kiera has been involved with the Auntie Karen Foundation since 2011. This is her 4th year singing in the Young Entrepreneur Conference.

Hello my name is Traiona Alston, I’m a 7th grade student at E.L. Wright Middle School. Some of my favorite activities are art and stepping. I’m actually on this year’s step team and so far it’s very fun.

I enjoy playing with my little sister, sometimes helping my mom when she ask me and i also have the joy of traveling! I haven’t been to many places but

it’s become a real life lesson to me. I like to learn about new things; try new things, and their cultures. These are some of the things i enjoy mostly .....well some times.

Thomasena Thomas is the daughter of George and Thomasena Thomas. She is one of six children. She is a senior at South Florence High School and also an Honors student. Thomas is a very dedicated and motivated young entrepreneur. She was a recipient of the Disney Dreamers Academy sponsored by Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine in March of 2015. Out of 10,000 students she was one of the

100 chosen for her company FairyCakessc. FairyCakessc is a gourmet cupcake and confectionery company based in Florence Sc. The company is thriving and flourishing. The pursuit of FairyCakessc is to inspire and encourage students to find their God given purpose and passion in life and pursue it at any age. Thomas utilizes this pursuit by partnering with local schools in the area to have FairyCakeFridays. The company also partners with organizations such as The Girl Scouts of America, Boys and Girls Clubs and also mentoring programs. The company also has a nonprofit called FairyShops which are summer classes where 75 lucky students get the glorious opportunity to learn how to bake and run a business. Thomas is a firm believer in Jesus Christ and believes that she was put upon this earth for a reason and that is to inspire youth to find their God given purpose and passion in life and to pursue it at a young age such as herself.

Kayla McClain is a senior undergraduate at Benedict College and currently has a 3.63 GPA in Studio Arts. Kayla was raised in Decatur, GA by a single mother and a Guyanese immigrant father. Although she receive her talents from her dad, she used her art growing up as an avenue for free expression. Her art has paved the way for her

to fund her education with various scholarships such as the Upperclassmen Art Scholarship, Freshmen Art Scholarship, and work study through the Fine Arts Department at Benedict College. Growing up, she has always had a passion for the arts and possessed the skills to become a well- rounded artist, but she did not know which route to undergo to actualize her aspirations. Kayla realized this passion when she was a young girl at the age of nine as she drew pictures related to a children’s book called “Horton Hatches the Egg.” Soon afterwards, she continued to draw and practice her skills more. Later on in her artistic journey, I moved on to painting different subject matter. Her paintings were less than great, however she continued to paint as a hobby. Without any knowledge of the arts, she began to teach herself by checking out books from the library and using them to enhance my drawing skills. Kayla believes her work tells a story about her life, enhances her character, and gives her a set purpose in the world. Although she had not realized it back then, art would become the gateway for her to express herself and open up many doors for her in the future. Art has been an important aspect of Kayla’s life. She enjoys art because it helps her communicate with the world in an alternative manner.

The seven-year old owner of Z.Mac’s Jewelry, Zyona D. Kinsey-McNabb, was born August 18, 2009 with her eyes wide open and a smile on her face. Her family knew from the very first sight of her, that she would blossom into an awesome individual. And boy did she ever!

At the tender age of four, Zyona approached her aunt, Sheneka Jackson-Kinsey, and told her that she wanted to own her very own business. Amused at the thought, her aunt began helping her create her business. The moment her aunt realized just how serious Zyona was about starting her business was when Zyona took all of her hair bands and began twisting them together.

Her aunt and grandma decided to invest in Zyona’s business and from that moment on, Zyona, along with her employees, Quinlin and Deontae Bookert, has been creating bracelets, necklaces and rings for sororities and fraternities, families and all ages. She loves what she does and takes pride in each piece she creates and sales. She also takes sales and creates them within a week’s time; in between homework and studying.

Zyona is currently a student in District One at Forest Heights Elementary School. The seven-year old business owner expects for her business to expand and eventually turn into a more productive company with a more durable product. So please stay tuned!!!!!

The Dance South Inc. Company ProgramThis program is designed for children and teens ages 7 to 17. The Company Program to provide children and teens the opportunity to receive intensive training in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Contemporary, Hip-Hop and much more. Under the direction of the best well--trained seasoned professionals; the DSI Company Program focuses on preparing youth for a professional career in dance, and the performing arts.

The Company Program provides youth the discipline needed to capitalize on their talent and help build the self-esteem needed to succeed in the industry. Dancers Compete in competitions and Showcases nationally. Dancers raise funds for competitions and performances through fundraisers created and organized by the youth. Dance South Company are the “Rising Stars” of our communities.



Skyla JoynerSky’s Star-Lite Creations, Accessories

Skyla Joyner, daughter of Active Duty Soldiers, Charles and LayTonia Bailey was born on June 17, 2005 in Sierra Vista, Arizona. As a military child she has lived in Arizona, Maryland, Germany, and South Carolina. Skyla is the big sister to her six-year-old brother, Cedric. She enjoys drawing, watching movies, and making her

own accessories. Skyla is currently a fifth grade student at Langford Elementary School where she sings in the chorus. Her favorite subject is Art and Music. Her creativity was first formally recognized when she won #1 in the Bavarian region for her clay island sculpture called “The Mystical Island.”

She started her own business, Star-Lite Creations, after receiving the Rainbow Loom as a Christmas gift. Star-Lite Creations features custom-made accessories made with colored rubber bands, hand-made jewelry and retail accessories. Her motivation is making people happy. She believes in being a blessing to others. This belief is evident in her sponsorship of Ja’miyah McKnight, a six-year-old little girl diagnosed with a brain tumor called astrocytoma and battling brain cancer. A portion of her profit goes towards Ja’miyah’s medical expenses. Her slogan for her business is “Have Fun. Be Creative. Be You.”

Motley Jasz Nelson, son of Fredric L. Nelson and Kendra P Nelson. Motley was born February 8, 2006. Motley is currently a fifth grader at Francis Mack Intermediate School Gaston, SC. Motley is also an honor roll student. Motley’s hidden talent as a photographer was revealed in 2014.Karen Alexander placed her camera in his hands to capture the precious moments to remember the Brookland Baptist Church Women’s ministry hat event. Since that

day, he’s been taking awesome pictures. Motley came in 3rd place last year for the Young Entrepreneur Conference for The Auntie Karen foundation. Now, Motley is the owner of his own business called Motley’s Photography. Over the summer Motley had a chance to be on WLTX News Channel 19 with Darcy Strickland to talk about The Microbusiness Conference for small business owners. Motley is also a soccer player that has been playing for 6 years for the Sandhills United Soccer Club in Swansea, SC. Motley is also very gifted in music. He embraces the position of a drummer at The Living Waters Christian Center located in West Columbia SC where the Pastor is Reverand De’Angelo Cokley. Motley is also a part of the Chosen Youth Puppet Ministry where his mother is the founder. Any age is the perfect age to follow your dreams.

Zion CampbellMusician

Zion Campbell is extremely proud to have the opportunity to perform in the showcase at the Young Entrepreneurs Conference sponsored by the Auntie Karen Foundation. Zion lives in Columbia, SC with his family and attends Dutch Fork Middle School. He is in the seventh grade and his favorite subjects are English and Music Appreciation. Zion is also a saxophonist for the Dutch Fork Middle School band. Zion began playing the guitar at the age of ten years old and began to take formal lessons at the age of eleven at Freeway Music under the instruction of AJ Lang. He has performed at local venues throughout the Columbia area including the Eau Claire Unity Festival and Okra Strut with, well known guitarist, Ter-rence Young. He has also performed at the Music Farm with the Freeway Music School. He currently serves as a guitarist for the youth services at Bible Way Church of Atlas Road. Zion is also a skilled drummer with nine years of experience and plays under the instruction of Tony Lee at Freeway Music School. He is grateful to God for blessing him with the gift of music. Zion is also thankful to his mom, dad, brothers Nicholas and Michael, and grandparents for their love, support, and encouragement. He is very grateful to his mentor Terence Young for his guidance, support, the opportunity provided to perform and grow professionally.



Garielle Richards has been the proud owner of Trill Vibes Company since 2012. Trill Vibes is a clothing company that strives to create quality clothing that is also affordable. The goal of the company is to allow customers to individualize their clothing, so every item they have is special to them.

Garielle has been interested in being a business owner since she was in elementary school. One day she stumbled across an idea that allowed her to create clothing she liked that was also not as pricey as clothing in other stores. At that moment, her business was born. Along with keeping up with her business, Garielle is a part of her school’s dance team. She enjoys writing and poetry, but shares an interest in engineering. She is very involved in her school. She participates in extracurricular activities includ-ing BETA Club, National Honors Society, DECA, Mock Trial, and Junior Civitans. She also has a passion for music and theatre.

She aims to always strive towards success and happiness. She continues to push towards these large ideals with God in front of her and her friends and family at her side.

Garielle RichardsTrill Vibes

The Lee Central Middle School and the Bishopville Primary School Media Literacy Programs were developed in 2014 by the Lee County School District Office of Instruction and Professional Development. The purpose of the program is to show students how to utilize multimedia to enhance their education while exposing them to different career opportunities in the multimedia field. The program gives students a chance to develop and use their media skills to document events occurring at their schools, the district and their community. This past year the media students were introduce to Governor Nikki Haley, conducted a forum with congressman Clyburn and Lee County School District Superintendent, Dr. Wanda Andrews and interviewed Lanie Hudson, 2014-2015 Miss South Carolina. The media teams also developed promotional items for nursing homes, churches, and group homes. Effective teaching of a challenging and relevant curriculum are giv-ing the Lee Central Middle School and the Bishopville Primary School students the skill to be successful members of an ever - changing society.

Julie Winn Sellers has been a member of the League of Women Voters of the Columbia Area for five years. She served two years as vice-president and is in her second year as president. Previous to joining the League, Sellers taught high school English for forty years. She gradu-ated from the University of South Carolina ’69 with a degree in English education. Her first ten years (1969-1979) teach-ing English were in Hawaii on the North

Shore of Oahu. Living there taught her about racism, poverty, cultural diversity, and aloha. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education ’73 from Pepperdine University. The last thirty years were at Irmo High School, where Sellers taught English and Graphic Design and advised the award winning HIS yearbook.Sellers has three children – Christine, John, and Michael. All of them graduated from Irmo High School. Each went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree and post-graduate degrees. She was a cradle-Episcopalian until 2012 when she joined the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia. Retired, Sellers continues to work in the community. She is on the board of People for Reconciliation, president of the Forest Hills in Harbison Homeowners Associa-tion, treasurer of the local chapter of AARP, as well as president of the League of Women Voters of the Columbia Area.

At 29 years old in 1999, Mayor Stephen K. Benjamin was appointed to Governor Jim Hodges’ cabinet as director of the state’s second largest law enforcement agency, the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Mayor Benjamin has continued his service to the community in serving

on numerous boards for nonprofit organizations such as the Columbia Urban League, Benedict College, the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce and as a founding board member of the Eau Claire Promise Zone. He also served as a founding member of Choose Children First and chief legal counsel for Midlands Crimestoppers. In 2009, Benjamin drew national attention by representing prominent radio host Tom Joyner and securing a pardon for Joyner’s great uncles wrongfully convicted in the death of a 73-year-old Confederate veteran and executed in 1913. In a landmark decision, the South Carolina Board of Paroles and Pardons voted unanimously to grant the posthumous pardon, the first for South Carolina in a capital case. Reelected by a 30 percent margin in November 2013, Mayor Benjamin’s administration has been characterized by his firm belief in Columbia’s potential and intense focus on job creation. In his first term alone, his leadership helped cut unemployment in the metro by roughly half and secured billions of dollars in new regional capital investment in the midst of a national recession.

Combined with the rebirth of Main Street, these accomplishments have drawn national attention and accolades including his being awarded an Aspen Rodel Fellowship and receiving an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from Francis Marion University. He has twice been named to The Washington Post’s “The Root 100 List” (2011 and 2013) as well as the 2014 GRIO 100 and was honored to receive a 2014 Triumph Award from the National Action Network as their 2014 Public Servant of the Year. As part of his commitment to fostering a world class police department in the City, Mayor Benjamin introduced the “Justice for All” initiative in 2014, which implemented new training, competitive pay, diverse representation and community engagement to strengthen the foundation of trust and accountability that exists between our communities and law enforcement agencies.

President Obama’s administration has also commended Mayor Benjamin on his work on behalf of My Brother’s Keeper (MBK). The city’s MBK efforts, in addition to Mayor Benjamin’s leadership, have led to Columbia being seen as a nationwide leader in implementing and upholding the missions of the program.

The Mayor was asked to speak at the 2016 Democratic National Convention (link to video of speech), where he talked about the importance of instilling in his daughters that they can do anything they set their minds to, even becoming President of the United States.

In addition to serving as Mayor of Columbia, Mayor Benjamin also serves as Second Vice President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and as Chairman for Municipal Bonds for America. He teaches a class at the University of South Carolina Honors College titled “Columbia, South Carolina: Building a Great City” and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities.

McLeod was born and raised in South Carolina, where she attended public schools along the infamous “Corridor of Shame.” With the support and guidance of her parents (a public school teacher and small business owner), she was able to get a quality education…something she believes every child deserves, regardless of where they happen to live or the resources their families may have.

During college, she served as a Page for then-Representative David Beasley, who later became Governor of South Carolina. After graduating, she worked at the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce before she was accepted and enrolled at the University of South Carolina School of Law, where she later earned her Juris Doctorate.She’s a strong voice, working alongside Republicans and Democrats to achieve progress for the people of South Carolina.During the mid-90s, when South Carolina was number one in the nation for domestic violence homicides, Mia successfully launched a statewide initiative for former SC Attorney General Charlie Condon, that developed multidisciplinary protocols, curricula and training for law enforcement, solicitors and judges when investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating cases of violence against women. Mia was later appointed by former Governor Jim Hodges to direct the State Office of Victim Assistance (SOVA) and while serving, was recognized by the Nat’l Crime Victim Compensation Program for creating satellite offices in rural, underserved counties to help broaden service outreach and access, ultimately easing the process for crime victims. Her innovative management practices brought national attention to South Carolina’s Crime Victim Compensation Program, which became a model for other states. In 2010, Mia became the first woman to represent House District 79 and the only Democrat elected to the House that year in a “swing” district. A resident of NE Columbia for 19 years, Mia is a community leader who has been recognized as one of South Carolina’s “Top 20 Under 40” and more recently, in Governing Magazine, as a woman leader who is among a small group of women across the country to be invited to join Governing Women’s inaugural Leadership Class. She has earned the distinction of “Liberty Fellow,” which is affiliated with the Aspen Global Leadership Network. She’s also a New Deal Leader, SC Education Policy Fellow, Diversity Leader and serves on the House’s Medical, Military & Municipal Affairs, Legislative Oversight and Joint Children’s Committees. In 2016, Mia introduced a bill that initiated a global conversation about why government shouldn’t interfere in women’s (or men’s) healthcare decisions. Sheneka Latrell Jackson-Kinsey was born January 30, 1989 to awesome parents and a family who encouraged her creativity at a young age. Her talents were revealed at the age of three and her talents have blossomed over the years and have been cultivated by the wonderful Fine Arts Department of Benedict College under the curriculum leadership of Ms. Gina Moore. Since graduating college in 2013, Ms. Jackson-Kinsey has illustrated two books; one children’s book, “A Hug While I’m Away” written by Ms. Karen

Alexander, and a book of poetry, “Memoirs of Alabama” written by Ninamarie. She credits her ability to be creative to her Creator. Her motto which she lives by daily is to produce art that glorifies God and uplifts and edifies the people of God. She worked with the Auntie Karen Foundation this summer to bring the Arts back to the Lee County School District in which she found her calling. She enjoyed teaching the students of Lee County how to be professional artists and how to appreciate art.

Ms. Jackson-Kinsey is currently employed in Lee County as the Art Teacher of Lee Central High School and Lee Central Middle School. Whenever she isn’t too busy creating lesson plans and setting up demonstrations for her students, she enjoys sitting by a window and allowing her creative thoughts to flow through her onto as many durable surfaces with as many mediums that she possibly can.

Rep. Howard has served in the SC House of Representatives since 1995, representing House District 76 of Richland County. He is the Chairman of the Medical, Military, Public and Municipal Affairs Committee (3M Committee). Prior to being elected to Chair the Committee, Rep. Howard served as the 1st Vice Chairman from 2001-2006. Prior to that, he served as Chairman of the 3M Local Government and Corrections Affairs Subcommittee.

Mr. Howard also served as the 2007-2008 Chairman of the SC Legislative Black Caucus (SCLBC). Under his chairmanship, then Senator Barak Obama was the keynote speaker for the SCLBC annual gala.

Rep. Howard was profiled in the Council of State Governments’ The Healthy States Initiative: Preventing and Treating Stroke in 2007. In this Legislator Policy Brief publication, he was recognized for his work as a health care policy leader. The South Carolina Dental Association honored him as their 2007 Legislator of the Year for his dedication to and understanding of oral health issues and the profession of dentistry. He received the President’s Award from the Palmetto Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association of South Carolina in 2012. Also in 2012, Rep. Howard was the subject of the annual James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation Charity Roast and he served as Grand Marshal in their annual walk.

Rep. Howard is a member of the South Carolina Agency Head Salary Commission and the Joint Consumer Affairs Screening Committee. In addition, he is a member of Midlands Technical College Automotive Advisory Board. He previously served as Chairman of the Board of School Commissioners of Richland County School District One. Rep. Howard was a member of the Mayor’s Task Force on Small & Minority Businesses, the Irmo-Chapin Career Educational Advisory Board, the Ridgewood Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign Commission and on Richland County’s Private Industry Council.

Rep. Howard graduated from Midlands Technical College with an A.D. Degree, and attended General Motors Automotive Training Center, Atlanta, Ga. He has received numerous certificates for advanced studies in Automotive/Computer Technology. Mr. Ford formerly served as Executive Director for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands and the James R. Clark Memorial Sickle Cell Foundation.

Mr. Ford has served on Richland School District One School Board since 1992. As a member of this board he has served in a variety of positions, including chairman. He was named Outstanding School Board Member for the Sixth Congressional District and All-State School Board Member by the South Carolina School Boards Association. He serves on the Benedict College Board and USC African American Community Advisory Board.

Mr. Ford has been named as one of South Carolina Business Vision’s Top 25 Influencers. Persons are selected for this honor based upon outstanding performance and service in their business fields and use of their influence and talents to improve quality of life in their community. He was recognized by the Columbia Housing Authority’s Wall of Fame.

Mr. Ford has served on numerous boards and committees and has received numerous awards and recognition for his distinguished service. Judge Jocelyn Newman was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 3, 1977 to fellow Circuit Court Judge, the Honorable Clifton Newman and Patricia Blanton Newman.

She attended public school in Columbia, where she graduated from Spring Valley High School. After beginning her college career at Duke University, she

ultimately earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of South Carolina.

Judge Newman attended law school at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she was a Merit Scholar. While in law school, she completed a judicial internship for the Honorable Reggie B. Walton of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Judge Newman received her Juris Doctor in 2004 and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar the same year. She is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.Judge Newman began her legal career as a judicial law clerk for now-retired Circuit Court Judge, the Honorable G. Thomas Cooper, Jr. She also served as an Assistant Solicitor for the Fifth Judicial Circuit before entering private practice with the law firm of Richardson Plowden & Robinson, P.A. in Columbia. Judge Newman left Richardson Plowden in late 2015 and was subsequently elected to the Circuit Court bench on February 3, 2016.

Judge Newman has been very active in the legal community. She has served on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Bar Foundation, as a Member of the Friends Advisory Board of the Ronald McDonald House, as an Associate Member of the South Carolina Board of Law Examiners, and as a member and treasurer for the John Belton O’Neall Inn of Court. She is a member of the Richland County Bar Association, S.C. Black Lawyers Association, S.C. Women Lawyers Association.
