What is a catalyst? A substance that speeds up a

Enzymes are biological or protein catalysts.

whether they will happen at all. Will recognize them by the reactants

#1 Combination Reactions Combine - put together 2 elements, or compounds combine to

compound. Products will be a different element

#4 Double Replacement Two things replace each other. Reactants must be two ionic compounds or

Reactions in Aqueous Solutions

A solution contains one or more solutes (substance being dissolved)dissolved in water

Water is the solvent (substance doing the dissolving)

Aqueous solution is one in which water is the solvent.

Aqueous Solutions Molecular compounds can be the

solutes in water. EX: Ionic compounds can be the solutes

in water. EX: When two aq solutions that contain

ions are combined, the ions may react with one another. These are always called DR rxns.

Three types of Aqueous Rxns Double replacement reactions can

form three types of products

1) Precipitate= solid produced during a chemical reaction in solution.

2) Water

3) Gas

Rxns that Produce Precipitates Ionic equations differ from chemical

equations because the substances are ions in solution and are written as ions in the equation.

Complete Ionic Equation: shows all particles in the equation as they really exist.

Reactions that form Water A Double Replacement reaction
