Flight 17 was a Boeing 777-2H6ER and carried a total of 298 peoples including 283 passengers and 15 crew members on the day of incident. This was the second air disaster in 2014 for Malaysian Airlines, after the disappearance of MH370 in the Indian ocean previously this year.

4Background: Crimean Conflict2014 Crimean crisis is on of the major factor, it involves the independence of Crimean Peninsula, and a conflict between Ukraine and Russia over its control. Pro-Russian forces gradually began to take control over the Crime as soon after the current government was dissolved and Russia along with few other countries considered it illegitimate. Crimean crisis was an outcome of the Ukrainian Revolution, also a referendum on whether to join Russia had an official turnout to be affirmative which later by UN General Assembly was declared illegal.

5Backgroundcont.ICAO issued in 02APR14 a safety bulletin recommending to avoid flying over the Simferopol FIR.Israeli flights stopped overflying Simferopol FIR, but continued flying over west Ukraine.Insurance companies issued warnings to operators to avoid conflict areas.Civil Aviation Conference 20146Crimean Conflict Area

Civil Aviation Conference 20147This is a non official threat assessment of the hazard of the conflict areas in Ukraine. As we can see the airplane went down in the red area.7Impact and AftermathImmediately following the incident Ukraine closed all routes in the Eastern Ukraine airspace at all altitudes. Airlines including Aeroflot, Transaero, Air France, Turkish Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa and S7 Airlines announced their intentions to instruct pilots to bypass Ukraine airspace.Ukraine and the western world blames Russia for the responsibility of the shot down.

Civil Aviation Conference 20149History of the flightCivil Aviation Conference 201410

The aircraft departed from Amsterdam Schipol at 1031z.After almost 3 hs., at 1253 while in contact with Dnipro control the crew were asked if were able to climb to the filed FL350 due converging traffic at FL330. As the crew asked to maintain FL330 the converging traffic finally climbed to FL350.The aircraft was left of track as per crew request to divert left 20Nm due weather. At 13:19:53z the aircraft was released to the west Dnipro control, while converging to the route about 3.7Nm north of the track. At 13:20:00z Dnipro control started to call MH17 without replay. By the same time the aircraft recorders stopped. No distress message was received from the aircraft.By the same time several other flights were overflying the same area, like Singapore Airlines Flight 351 from Copenhagen to Singapore.

10Preliminary findingsThe crew was properly licensed and had valid medical certificates for the flight.Aircraft departed from AMS in good condition.CVR/DFDR data showed no malfunctions or abnormal parameters.Damage observed in the forward fuselage and cockpit section indicate that there were multiple high energy objects that hit the aircraft from outside. The aircraft debris distribution suggests that it broke up in the air.

Impacts from outsideMultiple wing impacts

In this picture its possible to see the multiple impacts from outside of the aircraft. This second one shows impacts in the wing.In this third picture we can see a lot of impacts coming from outside the cockpit.12So, what happened?Civil Aviation Conference 201413Ukrainian rebels missile theory

Two main different hypothesis were published regarding the airplane crash. While the western countries blame the Ukrainian separatists backed and armed by Russia for shooting the airplane with a SA11 missile, Russia blames the Ukraine for shooting it by a jet fighter. There are videos and pictures showing a BUK (SA11) missile system leaving east Ukraine towards the Russian border.

13Ukrainian air strike?Civil Aviation Conference14

This picture was published by channel one, the official Russian TV and is being analyzed. The most common opinion available in the internet is that the picture is a fake, based in issues like the background picture that might be similar to Google earth pictures from 2012. As we can see in the left corner, the jet fighter is flying at 3 oclock from MH17, In the right hand close up its possible to see an air to air missile apparently fired towards MH17.14Conclusions

Honoring victims in the Netherlands15Safety investigation still going on.Industry needs to avoid hazardous conflict areas.Government safety and security guidelines need to be strictly adhered while planning and performing flights.Industry guidelines of dangerous areas are also pinpointed by insurance companies.
