‘Kingmaker’ Exhibition This exhibition shows you life in the castle in the medieval period. It uses realistic wax models of people. These wax models are wearing medieval clothes. In the exhibition, the lord of the castle and his knights are preparing for battle. Everyone in the castle is busy. Some people are making weapons, some people are preparing the horses and some people are cooking food.

DungeonEvery good castle has a dungeon, and Warwick Castle’s dungeon is full of instruments of torture. When you visit the dungeon, you can hear noises and voices. They are only sound effects, but it’s easy to imagine that the dungeon is full of prisoners from the past.

The Ghost TowerThe Ghost Tower at Warwick Castle has got a famous ghost from the 1600s – Sir Fulke Greville. In the exhibition ‘Ghosts Alive’, visitors watch his murder in 1628. An angry servant kills him with a knife. The murder isn’t real! It’s a show with actors, but it’s very frightening!

Medieval ShowsIn the summer, at Warwick Castle, people in medieval costumes demonstrate medieval skills, like archery and falconry, and knights on horses fight with medieval weapons.

Warwick Castle is an enormous medieval castle

in Warwick in central England. It is a thousand

years old. Visitors to Warwick Castle learn a lot

about medieval life in England. Here are some

of the exhibitions you can see there.

Natasha‘Hi, I’m 17. I’m in Year 12 at St Mark’s School in Chelmsford. It’s a girls’ school. After GCSEs, you can continue your studies and do A level exams. A level means Advanced Level. You need A levels to go to university or get a good job. You study for 2 years. You take the exams at the end of Year 13, when you’re 18. I’m studying four subjects at A level – History, Economics, English Literature and French. Most students do 3 or 4 subjects. It’s really unusual to do more. After A levels, I want to go to Exeter University and study English.’

Sophie‘Hi, my name’s Sophie and I’m 9. I go to Paulton Primary School in Lincoln, and I’m in Year 5. In the UK you start primary school when you are 4 or 5 years old. There are 7 years of primary school. The first year is Reception, and the second year is Year 1 (it’s a bit confusing!). Year 6 is the final year. After that, when we’re 11, we go on to secondary school. I’m really excited about that! Our school day starts at 8.45 and ends at 3.30. We all wear a uniform. The boys wear grey trousers and the girls wear grey skirts. We all wear white shirts and red sweatshirts. I’m wearing my sweatshirt in the photo.’

Daniel‘I’m Daniel and I’m 14. I go to Lanscombe Secondary School in Bristol. I’m in Year 10. There are 26 boys and girls in my class. There are 5 years of secondary school. The first year is Year 7 and the final year is Year 11. In Year 11, when we are 16, we do our GCSE exams. GCSE means General Certificate of Secondary Education. These are national exams and all students do them. Most students do GCSEs in about 10 subjects. My favourite subject is I.T., but I don’t like Geography. You can leave school at 16 if you want, but most students don’t.’

Michael‘I’m 17 and I go to Kingsbury College of Further Education in Stoke-on-Trent. I’m not studying for any A levels. I’m studying for an NVQ in Catering. You can start an NVQ (a National Vocational Qualification) course after your GCSEs, when you are 16. On my course, we learn all about cooking and hygiene. We work in the kitchens and the restaurant at the college. I want to be a chef when I finish college. My ambition is to have my own restaurant.’

‘My name’s Brandon and I’m 11. Football is my life. I play it all the time. I’m in my town’s under-12s FA club. FA stands for ‘Football Association’. There’s a famous championship for professional football teams called the FA Cup. You can join a junior FA club when you are 5! We practise every Tuesday evening and Saturday morning at the football club in town. Each training session is an hour and a half. We also play a match every Sunday morning, and we always celebrate when we win! When I grow up, I want to be a footballer, of course!’

‘I’m Alicia and I’m 12 years old. My favourite sport is trampolining. I go to trampolining lessons every Wednesday at the sports centre in town after school. My lessons are from 4–5 p.m. Each lesson costs £4.50. We all take it in turns to practise our routine. I love trampolining, and now we’ve got a trampoline at home in the garden, too! At my club you can work for four different badges: yellow, blue, green and red. Yellow is the first badge. I’m working for my blue badge at the moment. Next year there’s an important competition in London for trampolining teams. We all want to take part in it.’

‘I’m Kelly and I love dancing. I’m 12 years old. I’m in the hip hop dance club at my school. It’s a new after-school club, and it’s very popular!

It’s every Monday, for 50 minutes. Most of the people in the class are girls, but there are five or six boys, too. I like hip hop because it’s very energetic, and it’s good for me! I never go to a gym, but the dance club is like an exercise class. It’s a great way to keep fit. At the club we learn routines to hip hop music and other pop songs. And we perform a show at the end of every term for our parents and friends.’

‘I’m Joshua and I’m 13 years old. I love tae kwon do. It’s a martial art from Korea and it’s a very popular sport in the UK, too. I do tae kwon do at school on Thursdays at 3.30 p.m. The lessons are for an hour.

Tae kwon do is very similar to karate. There’s a lot of kicking and it’s an important skill. Like all martial arts, tae kwon do is not about fighting, but about respect and control. There are ten different levels of tae kwon do, called geups. You start at the 10th geup and you try to progress through the levels to the 1st geup. I’m on the 5th geup. That’s quite good!’
